TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER

Decreasing the length of time a woman’s breast tissue is exposed to estrogen may help prevent breast cancer. Exposure to estrogen is reduced in the following ways:

• Early pregnancy: Estrogen levels are lower during pregnancy. Women who have a full-term pregnancy before age 20 have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have not had children or who give birth to their first child after age 35.

• Breast-feeding: Estrogen levels may remain lower while a woman is breast-feeding. Women who breastfed have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have had children but did not breastfeed.

Saliva is essential for cleaning the mouth, proper chewing and swallowing, and protecting teeth. Dry mouth (also called xerostomia) is an oral condition that causes the mouth to produce insufficient levels of saliva and leads to a long list of complications ranging from a sore throat to mouth sores and bad breath. In addition to discomfort, it can affect oral health, whole body health, and the foods we can eat. Tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, and oral infections are all more common in people with dry mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications and chemotherapy treatments, snoring or mouth breathing, nerve damage from an injury, hormonal changes as we age, and health conditions like diabetes and autoimmune diseases.

Many people are not aware of the important role saliva plays in oral

P.S. Some simple, temporary solutions to dry mouth include sugarfree gum and hard candy, especially those containing xylitol, which promotes saliva production.

Learn To Adjust YourBody to a New Sleeping Schedule

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just retired from working the graveyard shift for 40 years. I am hoping you can share some information on how to safely learn to sleep at night once again. -- E.H.

ANSWER: Changing your body’s circadian rhythm isn’t always easy, and after such a long time, it will take longer for you. But it shouldn’t be as difficult as you might fear. When people fly to the other part of the world, they need to get accustomed to a new sleep schedule, and it usually doesn’t take more than a week or two for them to get accustomed. For you, it will be difficult learning to be up during the day, which is more of a behavioral issue than a circadianrhythm issue.

The first advice I give is to push your internal time clock forward, not backward. Try to stay up two hours or so later each day until you get to a bedtime that works with your family (if appropriate) and goals. Your body has an easier time moving forward than backward.

Bright light can be your friend or your enemy. You want bright light when you wake up, not right before bed. Computers, phones and tablets all put out light that signals your brain to wake up, so don’t use these before bed. Making sure that your bedroom is dark when you want to sleep is something you probably have already done, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Caffeine is very helpful to a lot of people, so if you partake, do so when you awaken, not before bedtime. Some people metabolize caffeine slowly, so if you do, don’t have any caffeine for at least 8 hours before planning to go to sleep.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES

What are the symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries? The Mayo Clinic notes that symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries, including pain, range from mild to severe. Severe symptoms can seriously limit individuals’ ability to perform and engage in daily activities. Symptoms differ depending on which nerve fibers are affected. Motor nerves regulate all the muscles under conscious control, helping people to walk, speak and hold objects. Sensory nerves relay information about touch, temperature and pain, while autonomic nerves regulate activities that are not consciously controlled, such as breathing, heart function and digestion. Since these functions are so different, it’s no surprise that injuries to each type of nerve produce different symptoms.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Harvesting the Past: The Autumnal Farming Traditions of Western NY

So many towns in the Rochester area boast a rich agricultural history that has shaped its landscape and community for centuries. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, farming was the backbone of much of the economy, with autumn being a particularly busy and celebratory time for local farmers. It has been illuminating to explore the traditions of yesteryear.

During the 1800s, farming in Western NY was largely defined by small, family-owned farms. Autumn meant the culmination of a year’s hard work, a time when farmers gathered the fruits of their labor before the onset of winter. Key crops during this period included wheat, corn, potatoes, and apples, all of which were harvested in the fall. e process of harvesting was labor-intensive and required the entire family’s involvement, along with hired hands or even neighbors who pitched in during particularly bountiful seasons.

One of the most iconic crops of the area was (and remains) the apple, our state fruit for which the Finger Lakes region and Western NY is well-known to this day. Orchards dotted the landscape, with farmers cultivating several varieties, each ripening at different times to extend the harvest season. Apples were hand-picked from trees, o en in late September and October, with the entire family participating in the gathering process. Apples were stored in cool, dark cellars to preserve them through the winter or were processed into cider.

Cidermakingwasacommonpracticeamongareafarmers.Apples were crushed using wooden presses, and the juice was fermented in barrels. Hard cider was a staple on many farm tables, providing a source of refreshment and, in some cases, a form of currency or trade. By late autumn, many farmers would have a significant portion of their apple harvest dedicated to cider production, ensuring they had a supply to last through the winter months.

Grain crops such as wheat and oats were another significant part of our area’s autumn harvest. e process began with reaping, where farmers used scythes or horse-drawn reapers to cut the stalks. e grain was bundled into sheaves and le to dry in the fields before being threshed. reshing separated the grain from the chaff and was o en done using a flail or, later, with the help of threshing machines. reshing machines were a significant advancement, allowing farmers to process grain more efficiently. In the early days, threshing

was a communal activity, with neighbors o en coming together to help. is sense of community was central to the farming lifestyle here, especially during the fall harvest when time was of the essence.

Completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 had a profound impact on Western NY agriculture. e canal provided an efficient means for farmers to transport their goods to larger markets, particularly during autumn when crops were harvested in abundance. Farmers in Western NY could ship grain, apples, and other produce to New York City and beyond, significantly boosting the local economy. is connection to the canal meant that autumn in Western NY was not just about harvesting but also about preparing goods for transport. Farmers would spend the fall months gathering crops and processing, packaging, and readying them for the journey along the canal.

Today, some (arguably a lot of) farmland has given way to residential and commercial development. However, the legacy of our agricultural past lives on in local traditions and landmarks. Farmers’ markets are a modern-day reflection of our deep-rooted farming traditions.

Western NY’s agricultural history is a testament to the hard work and resilience of its early farmers. eir practices, particularly during the fall harvest, shaped the local economy and fostered a strong sense of community, a spirit that continues to be felt in Western NY today. Support your local farms and farmers this autumn and year-round to keep our local economy going and growing.

STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES

(NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers.

Small Businesses, Big Benefits

Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can:

• Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it

• Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future

• Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded.

Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Salons

When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon).

Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants.

Employee Incentives

Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work.

Additional Findings

• When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing.

• 58 percent of small business owners said plastic gift cards cost the business owner less to manage than paper certificates. Learn more about gift cards at www.firstdata. com/giftcards.

Awesome Red Cross Staff

The Red Cross put out a request for blood donations to help hurricane victims. I made an appointment with the John St. Donation Center in Henrietta. I can’t say enough about the wonderful Staff at this location. I was treated like I was the #1 blood donor but I noticed that ALL OF US WERE TREATED like we were #1. Thank you to all the staff for their care, compassion and help.

A Heartfelt Thanks

Hoarding Already

It’s laughable seeing people already hoarding toilet paper and other items because of the dockworkers’ strike. Didn’t we learn anything from Covid? Buy more throughout the year. Stock up. With costs rising, most items cost less 6 months or a year ago. Now they run into stores and buy in bulk before anyone else does. Planning ahead helps everyone.

The volunteers of the Friends of the Batavia Peace Garden would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, patrons, donors and friends for their unwavering support. The Peace Garden looks amazing, thanks to the dedicated volunteers who weeded and watered throughout the summer.

Our famous Friday hot dog stand had an outstanding season. Our hot dog stand volunteers worked diligently to serve our new and repeat customers. We thoroughly enjoyed everyone who stopped by for lunch and to visit.

We are grateful for the community support afforded to us. You all had a hand in keeping the flags flying and the flowers blooming.

A heartfelt thanks to all and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Loud Blue [Vehicle]

To the person who drives the blue [vehicle] all over town: your loud, obnoxious, obtrusive driving is a distraction and nuisance to numerous people. I recently saw a fleet of [vehicles] and they were quiet, so the noise level is something within your control. I think it would behoove you to find another, more productive way to spend your time; it’s curious how you are able to drive around aimlessly all night and all weekend.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS

October is Anti-Bullying Month

Parents go to great lengths to protect their children. Keeping a watchful eye is a great way to protect kids when they're around the house, but parents may need to look for more subtle signs to determine if their children are being mistreated when they leave home.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that roughly 20 percent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 experience bullying nationwide. Parents might once have written off bullying as part of growing up, but research has long since indicated that bullying can be very harmful to youngsters. The DHHS notes that research indicates that persistent bullying can lead to or exacerbate feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion, and despair. Children who are persistently bullied also may experience new or worsening feelings of anxiety and depression.

Parents can play a vital role in preventing bullying. Much of that role involves parents educating themselves about bullying, including what it is and what it's not and what are some warning signs that a child is involved in bullying.

What is bullying?

The DHHS website Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power. Bullying behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. The imbalance of power associated with bullying involves the children who bully using some semblance of power they have over the children they're bullying to harm or control those youngsters. Their power may be physical strength, access to embarrassing information or popularity.

What isn't bullying?

Various types of aggressive behavior have the potential to be harmful, but they do not fall under the umbrella of bullying. For example, Stopbullying.gov notes that children between the ages of three and five are learning how to coexist with one another, including how to share and cooperate. Children in these age groups may be aggressive if they don't get what they want, but their actions in such instances do not constitute bullying. More information about potentially harmful, non-bullying behaviors is available at Stopbullying.gov.

Educate Yourself and Your Children

What are some signs a child is being bullied?

The DHHS notes that not all children who are being bullied exhibit warning signs. In addition, some signs might be more subtle than others. But some potential indicators that a child is being bullied include:

• Unexplainable injuries

• Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry

• Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness

• Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. For example, children who are being bullied may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch.

• Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares

• Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school

• Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations

• Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem

• Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide

What are some signs a child is bullying other children?

Parents also should be on the lookout for signs their children are bullying other youngsters. Such signs include:

• Kids get into physical or verbal altercations

• Children have friends who bully others

• Increasingly aggressive behavior

• Frequent trips to the principal's office or to detention

• Kids have extra money or new belongings but cannot explain how they got the cash or items

• Kids blame others for their problems

• An unwillingness to accept responsibility for their actions

• Kids are competitive and worry about their reputation or popularity

Parents have a vital role to play in preventing bullying so all youngsters feel safe and sound inside and outside of school.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

HOW TO EFFECTIVELY AND SAFELY SANITIZE A CAR

• Wash hands. First and foremost, it is crucial to wash your hands before and after using the car.

• Use rubbing alcohol. Solutions that contain 70 percent alcohol are effective against many viruses and bacteria. Nearly every interior surface of a vehicle can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.

• Avoid bleach or hydrogen peroxide. They are likely to damage a car’s upholstery.

• Use soap and water: Experts say that vigorous washing with a soapand-water solution can be effective against many contaminants. Friction also can help to break down germ cells during cleaning.

• Address frequently touched surfaces. Pay attention to the steering wheel, door handles, buttons, touchscreen displays, shift lever, and more when sanitizing.

TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Drive in moderate weather: The software experts at Geotab note that cold weather affects EV range. Though battery thermal management systems have been designed to keep batteries within an optimal temperature range to minimize loss in battery performance, battery range is adversely affected when driving in extreme cold. Geotab notes that 70 F is the trip efficiency sweet spot.

Puzzle Answers This Week

How to Navigate Potential Supply Shortages this Holiday Season

• Shop Local. By mid-spring 2022, congestion at ports on the west coast of the United States had lessened significantly. But the same could not be said for ports on the east coast. Many big box retailers rely on imports to fill their shelves, and that could make it hard for such sellers to deliver items in time for the holiday season. Shopping local and buying items directly off the shelf can ensure no one is given an IOU this holiday season.

• Give Gi Cards. If shipping estimates make it unlikely that gi s will arrive on time for the holiday season, pivot to gi cards. Put the amount of money you would have spent on the item on the card instead.

• Ship Directly to Recipients. It might not offer the same heartwarming charm as handing a loved one a gi in person, but shipping gi s directly to their recipients increases the likelihood that the person will receive the gi by Chanukah or Christmas morning. Many online retailers now offer wrapping at additional cost, and shoppers can splurge and have directly shipped gi s wrapped to add a more traditional feel to gi -giving.

• Give Homemade Gi s. Homemade gi s, whether it’s baked goods or cra s, don’t need to be shipped, so there’s no way such items will spend the holiday season sitting on a ship in a congested port. If you choose to make cra s, decide early what you want create so you can secure all of the necessary supplies in plenty of time to deliver the items during Chanukah or on Christmas morning.

3 strategies that can lower breast cancer risk

Breast cancer affects millions of individuals each year. e World Cancer Research Fund International reports that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women across the globe, affecting roughly 2.3 million women each year.

Despite the global prevalence of breast cancer, various organizations report high five-year survival rates, particularly among women whose cancers are detected in the earliest stages of the disease. In fact, a 2023 study published in the journal BMJ found that the risk for dying from breast cancer in the five years a er an early-stage diagnosis fell to 5 percent in recent years, a notable improvement from the 14 percent risk of death that was reported in the 1990s.

Increased survival rates for breast cancer are welcome news for women and their families. e higher survival rates are a byproduct of the tireless efforts of cancer researchers, who have also discovered links between the disease and certain lifestyle factors. ough there's no way to eliminate one's risk for breast cancer entirely, the American Cancer Society notes certain variables are within women's control. With that in mind, women can consider these three strategies that can lead to improved overall health and might help women lower their risk for breast cancer as well.

1. Reach and maintain a healthy weight. e benefits of maintaining a healthy weight include a lower risk for heart disease and stroke, and women should know that weight and breast cancer risk are linked as well. According to the ACS, increased body weight and weight gain as an adult are linked to a higher risk of developing breast cancer. at’s particularly so among post-menopausal women. A 2023 study published in the journal BMC Women’s Health found that the chances of developing breast cancer increase among post-menopausal women who are obese.

2.

Avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise is one of the ways to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, so it makes sense that being physically active can reduce breast cancer risk. e National Cancer Institute reports that a 2016 meta-analysis of 38 cohort studies found that the most physically active women had between a 12 and 21 percent lower risk for breast cancer than women who were the least physically active. e NCI also notes that additional studies have found that women who become more physically active a er menopause also have a lower risk for breast cancer than those who do not.

3.

Limit or eliminate alcohol consumption. e ACS urges women who drink to consume no more than one alcoholic drink per day, noting that consumption of even small amounts of alcohol have been linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Officials with the MD Anderson Cancer Center note that the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk is low. However, the MDACC notes that alcohol can contribute to unwanted weight gain, thus increasing cancer risk. In addition, alcohol can increase levels of estrogen and other hormones associated with breast cancer.

It may be impossible to completely prevent breast cancer. However, women can embrace strategies that improve their overall health in ways that lower their risk for breast cancer.

Homemade hummus with truly unique taste

Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread

Makes 2 cups

2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped

Salt

1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained

4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish

2 tablespoons chopped red onion

21/2 teaspoons ground cumin

11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds

2 tablespoons lemon juice

4 teaspoons olive oil

2 teaspoons chile flakes

2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below)

Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below)

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander.

Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges.

Moroccan Spice Blend

Makes about 2 tablespoons

In a small resealable glass or plastic container, combine 1 teaspoon each of: ground cumin, ground turmeric, saffron threads, ground coriander, ground cinnamon, ground smoked paprika, finely grated lemon peel.

Yogurt Flatbread

Serves 4

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon coarse salt

21/2 cups plain yogurt

Olive oil

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

WAYS TO REDUCE BREAST CANCER RISK

Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity and monitoring calories can keep weight in check. The Mayo Clinic recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity. Strength training at least twice a week also is recommended. Being overweight or obese increases a woman’s risk for breast cancer.

PAW’S CORNER

MAKE A WINTER TRAINING SCHEDULE FOR YOUR PET

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd, “Dante,” is smart but stubborn, and constant training is essential. But I wanted to share a method I use to make sure I keep up with his basic obedience training and work on advanced skills year-round.

Every three to four months, I sit down with a new notebook and make a training journal for Dante. It helps me organize my thoughts around how to best train him in the late fall and winter, when going outside every day isn’t always possible, or the weather is so unpleasant that Dante won’t listen to my commands.

I write down the training goals I want to accomplish during this period. I note any behavioral or training issues that Dante has had up to now. Shepherds, like many big dogs and herders, have a lot of energy and need at least an hour per day of exercise, so I figure out the best times to do that. ere are also a lot of holidays during this period, and the journal gives me a place to figure out in advance how I will handle travel, training, parties and other schedule challenges.

I hope my method will help other readers who are trying to maintain their dog’s obedience skills while having a busy life. -- Cheryl K. in Eau Claire, Wisconsin

DEAR Cheryl: at’s fantastic advice! ank you for sharing your journaling method. It sounds like it provides a space to write down much more information than jotting notes on a wall calendar.

Creating a training schedule and journal also is a big help in monitoring how well your dog is progressing with their training, and noting areas where improvements can be made.

SIGHTS TO SEE AT FALL HARVEST FESTIVALS

Wagon rides - Farms and the tools of the farming trade are part of harvest festivals. Wagons transporting crops are a classic sight, even if they’re no longer heavily relied upon on the farm. Rather than a cargo bed full of corn or apples, harvest festivals tote families around on wagon rides or on hay bale beds towed by tractors.

Assisted living facilities can meet the needs of people who cannot live independently but do not require the around-the-clock care of a nursing home.

Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

DID YOU KNOW?

Howhouseholdsearntheirincome haschangeddramaticallyoverthe last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census andAmericanCommunitySurveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
