FREE GLOSSARY AND COMPENSATION GUIDE (NAPSI)—If you or someone you care for is ever diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer after exposure to asbestos at work decades ago, here’s news for you. If you’re undergoing medical treatment, you can use a free “Asbestos Disease Glossary” available from the Asbestos Lifeline Institute of Great Neck, New York. The handy, pocket-size booklet explains all the common medical terms used in asbestos injury care and identifies all the different medical specialists involved in treating mesothelioma, lung cancer and several other nonmalignant, asbestosrelated diseases.

Active Living 50+ ____________________30 Auctions & Antiques ____________________21

The free booklet also contains helpful information about achieving monetary compensation for asbestos injuries, which hinges upon a timely filing of the claim and the ability to identify the specific asbestos products you used. In most instances, a “latency period” of several decades after exposure occurs before asbestos diseases develop, so most victims are in their 60s or older.

Automotive _____________________6 Body & Mind ____________________34 Classifieds ____________________46

For victims with valid claims, choosing the right law firm for representation can be daunting, due to the many choices presented through TV commercials and Internet searches. The Asbestos Lifeline Institute can also be helpful in guiding you to the right firm.

W hile a full toolbox might be unnecessary, bring along an adjustable w rench, a flat head and Phillips screw driver, a pair of pliers, a tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper, and a flashlight. Extra roadside flares and reflectors also should be packed should you need to pull over and address an automotive problem, such as a flat tire. Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

DEAR CARA: Take both of your cats to the veterinarian as soon as an appointment is available. Because the behavior just recently started after years of tranquility, a health issue could be at the root of their fighting. Senior cats are especially likely to develop conditions that cause them to be cranky or more territorial than usual. Pain from arthritis or other conditions can be a big factor in making Bitsy irritable, tired and just not in the mood to hang out with Mitsy. Likewise, Mitsy could be developing a medical condition; it’s best to rule out physical problems in both cats. Once their health has been assessed and treatment, if necessary, started, then the hard work of reconciling the two can begin. Keep the cats separated at first -- on opposite sides of the house, if possible, in closed rooms. Each day, reintroduce them by placing a small plate of food in front of each door and letting them out. If they calmly eat, then the next day, move both plates closer. Observe the cats as they eat; if they begin to growl or tense up, put both back into their rooms before they escalate -- fighting is very traumatic for them. Shift the bowls back a bit and try again. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

COMMON TERMS FOUND ON FOOD LABELS Dietary fiber: The Mayo Clinic notes that dietary fiber refers to the parts of plant foods that the human body cannot digest or absorb. Fiber is typically classified as soluble, which refers to types of fiber that dissolve in water, and insoluble, which is used to describe types of fiber that promote movement of material through the digestive system. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, while insoluble can help people who suffer from constipation or irregular stools.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

By Lucie Winborne * The weight of all the ants on earth is greater than that of all humans.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-inthe-dark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * This tip will change your life when peeling eggs: After you have hard-boiled your eggs, drain and submerge in ice water. Put them back in the pot, put the lid on and shake. Shake in all directions for up to a minute. The eggs practically slip right out of their shells. Just rinse and prep. -- JoAnn * “To distinguish your keys, especially house keys that have similar stamps, simply paint the key head with different colors of nail polish. You could even add a very subtle dot of the matching polish on the key lock. Reapply as needed.” -- S.L. in Oregon * If you keep birds, here’s a reminder: Never preheat pans on high heat -- especially nonstick pans. They can let off a chemical that you or I cannot detect but can be a health hazard if your bird friend is in the kitchen area. Don’t keep birds in the kitchen when cooking. * “To mark the end on a roll of tape, save your bread tabs. Stick one on the tape end and it will be ready and easy to start the next time. If it’s a thick tape, you can use two clips -- one at either side of the tape. This way, it won’t split on you.” -- M.E. in Maryland * Use a flat iron to iron your collar if it’s rumpled. This also works to straighten out buttonholes that have crimped. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

S E V RA Our Deepest Gratitude On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. The amount of love and generosity from everyone surrounding the fundraiser filled our hearts during such a challenging time. Thanks to the success of the BBQ and all the giving donations, we were able to make a generous contribution towards the Trevor Irby Memorial scholarship. This is a cause that is very near to our hearts. During such trying times in our personal lives and in current events, it is difficult to remember that there is still so much love and compassion in the world. Thank you for helping to make this day so positive, for all the generosity towards the scholarship, and for showing such compassion and grace. You are appreciated. A special thank you to the Stewart family, a constant support and pioneer of this fundraiser. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Aguirre, Faith Gates, and Paul Teed for making all this possible. - The Warner Family Kindness to a stranger On August 27th from 10:30PM to 3:30AM, I was waiting to be taken care of at UMMC Emergency Room for injuries sustained due to a fall. A young mom with a sick two-year-old boy was also waiting to see a doctor. Having left my home in a hurry, I didn’t have any cash with me, and they didn’t allow my wife to wait with me. Using hand signals, I asked the woman to please get me a bottle of pop, and she got me a root beer. In the excitement, I neglected to make arrangements to pay her back. I would like to pay her back and let her know how much I appreciated her kindness in helping a thirsty 88-year-old man caught without any cash.

Another natural area lost Construction has started on a new low-price store in Hemlock even though there are 2 other stores of the same name within 6 miles. At the site, there was a field full of flowers that attracted many butterflies and bees and a nice little pond alive with turtles, frogs and dragonflies. Then one day, the bulldozers cleared the field, ripped down trees and filled the pond, snuffing out all life. What an absolute shame! When are we going to stop destroying our natural areas for the sake of convenience, cheap goods, profit, and a few low-paying jobs? Demand Social Security changes Those who work and have Social Security deducted should be outraged that the government uses our money for their “slush funds.” It’s our money to be used when we are retired, disabled or for family hardships. Why aren’t taxpayers demanding our Representatives manage S.S. money as it was intended? Don’t forget, they work for us, and if they aren’t representing us, they should be voted out. This abuse has been going on for many years, but still they “pickpocket” our money without taxpayer permission. Everybody should be contacting their representatives from the bottom to the top. With computers, it is easy to contact our representatives. No more rocks Why are we painting trite messages on rocks (“be kind”) and then leaving them around on the ground outside? I don’t like it. Leave the rocks alone.

585-802-1544 WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love.

When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Free Chronic Disease Self-Management Classes Come to Genesee County BY SCOTT WURTZEL The peer leaders are trained to help people learn self-management. “I went through a training in June of 2016 to become a chronic disease self-management peer leader,” Becker said. “I did a very extensive four days of training in Syracuse. In our trainings, you learn how to be a peer leader to your audience, the people in your class, and we have very strict guidelines we have to follow because the program itself is created through Stanford University.”

Covid has been at the forefront of everyone’s mind for over a year now, but that doesn’t mean other diseases just cease to exist. A type of disease that has certainly not gone away is chronic disease. Chronic diseases are those that persist over long periods of time. They generally cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication. Therefore, it’s up to the individual to care for themselves. Luckily, there are people out there who want to help those that suffer from chronic disease. Independent Living of the Genesee Region is offering a free, six-course program about chronic disease selfmanagement. Donna Becker, assistant to the Director at Independent Living, is a peer leader for the chronic disease classes. Becker shared more detail about self-management. “The first thing we need to stress is that we are not medical professionals,” she explained. “We need to let everybody know that so that they are not coming in expecting us to help cure a problem. Selfmanagement means we help them cope with whatever chronic disease they may have. Let’s say someone has COPD. We may tell them, ‘You know what, get out there, get in a little bit of walking.’ We always stress to follow up with your provider if you have any symptoms that are not normal. We stress that throughout the whole workshop.” “The ways we help people with any chronic disease, whether it’s diabetes, arthritis, COPD, an eating disorder, or asthma, is that we have different techniques,” Becker continued. “These techniques may include relaxation by listening to CDs or getting out there and walking. We do a lot of brainstorming in our class, so it’s very interactive with our participants that are in there. We actually reach out to them.” Healthy eating is naturally one of the important topics covered. “We discuss healthy eating. This includes the plate method, explaining which parts you divide the plate up into, and how to make healthy choices when eating food, that type of thing,” shared Becker. “We also do weight management, medication management, making sure you are on the right medications, and being an advocate for yourself. We don’t tell you how to cure a problem. We just help them cope with that problem.”

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Becker also talked about the reasoning for why they started offering the program in the first place. “We found that there are a lot more people out there with chronic conditions, and they don’t know how to manage their health problems,” Becker explains. “Yes, they can go to their doctor, and sometimes they feel like the doctor is not really listening, so we found that there was a need. There are people out there who just want to learn more, to learn how to manage their own problems. I think people now are getting to where they just want to try to live healthier lives. We are there to just help encourage them and give them some tips on how to do it.” With so much effort being put into this, why is it being offered for free? It comes down to cost, not for the company, but for the consumer. “A lot of people probably wouldn’t come if there was a cost because they might not be able to afford it,” Becker stated. “We want to make it available to all the people in the community. We don’t want to have to charge. We did our training, and again, there are a lot of people out there who maybe couldn’t come if there was a fee.” “These workshops, two and a half hours for 6 weeks, give people quite a bit of information in each class,” Becker concluded. “It’s just nice to see what people take away from the class and what they learned.” Classes will be held at the Genesee County Office for the Aging, 2 Bank St in Batavia. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Listen Up: Engage Your Brain With Podcasts Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.aarp.org/ podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Or see Edx (www.edx.org), co-founded by Harvard and MIT, for information on their 3,000 classes to audit for free. For more listings, see MOOCs at www.mooc.org. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Over time, you probably will start to see some familiar faces. Drive around town and get a feel for side streets instead of the main thoroughfares. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

KEYS TO PROPER DENTAL HYGIENE PRACTICES The key to preventive dentistry is having a maintenance plan for your teeth, much like scheduled service for your car. Doing the same for your teeth and gums will prolong and preserve sound oral health. In addition to at-home self care of brushing thoroughly, flossing, and rinsing, regular dental cleanings and assessments are essential to dental health. Daily brushing will help remove plaque and kill bacteria, while flossing cleans in between teeth and gums and inhibits bacterial growth. Minimizing sugary, acidic foods and drinks avoids deterioration of the surface enamel, and eating a healthy diet contributes to overall health. The rewards of implementing this at-home routine, combined with regularly scheduled dental cleanings and checkups, include a healthy and beautiful smile.

To keep your teeth and to keep them strong, be sure to keep your dental appointments for regular checkups! Remember that nothing is more economical than regular, professional visits to the dentist to help guard against any problems that may threaten your smile. If you have questions about caring for your teeth and gums and achieving optimum dental health, please feel free to call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. Our full-service, state-ofthe-art office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we have office hours by appointment.

Surgery Is Valid Option for Severe Sleep Apnea ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, who is 30 years old, was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and currently uses a CPAP machine. He says does not want to use this for the rest of his life, therefore, he has researched surgery to correct his OSA. Recently he consulted with a sleep expert, and now has surgery scheduled with that doctor. My son will have a septoplasty and a palate expansion before a more radical surgery in a year called MMA. My son feels that these surgeries will give him the longest lasting cure for his OSA. I am very concerned about all of these surgeries. I value your objective opinion and hope you can give me some reassurance that these surgeries are worth the pain. -- G.M. ANSWER: Although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure, which works by using air to keep the airway open) is the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, surgery is another effective way to treat OSA. Surgery is most appropriate for those who wish a surgical solution (some people can’t stand the CPAP machine), those who have a surgically correctable problem (see below), and those who are good candidates for surgery; younger age makes surgery seem more reasonable to me. The specific surgery chosen depends on an individual’s unique anatomy. Surgery on the uvula (yes, the dangling thing at the back of the throat), soft palate and pharynx is the most common surgery, but maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA) has been shown to be successful in several well-known medical centers in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic and Stanford. Success rates are high, and some studies have shown surgical cure of obstructive sleep apnea in over half of those who undergo the procedure. Not knowing your son and not being a surgeon, I can’t give an objective opinion for him in particular, but I can say that in appropriate patients, surgical treatment of OSA is reasonable. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 35

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK TO LAND A NEW JOB

Stay in touch. Professional networks are most effective for professionals who keep in touch with their colleagues and acquaintances. Follow up with colleagues you’ve worked with in the past to see if there’s anything you can do for them or to check in on how a project you discussed with them is going. Staying in touch can shed light on job opportunities or open other doors that might facilitate your job search.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

(Applications held in strict confidence)

A new year often sparks change. Many people aspire to change jobs at the dawn of a new year, and such changes are more frequent than one might think.
