My name is
Eggnog I am an 8-month-old Easter Egger. I may be a mix breed but I’m the best in the flock because I lay beautiful colored eggs like blue and green! I enjoy showing off each morning with my egg song, yes, I sing when I lay an egg! Whilst not strictly a purebred, the Easter Egger has become a backyard favorite across America. With its cute looks and vibrant personality what’s not to like? They are known as Easter Eggers because they can lay a wide variety of egg colors and their plumage can also be various colors. Generally, in the US an Easter Egger is a bird that is understood to carry the blue egg laying gene from its parent stock (the Araucana or Ameraucana).

Hearts for the Homeless Celebrates 30 Years on Christmas Eve BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
t some point, you have probably dropped gently used clothing into one of those little red donation bins found across Western New York and reaching nearly to Syracuse. Perhaps like me, you are simply glad your clothing, shoes, and blankets will be put to good use, but do you know where your donated items are going? You might be surprised! The red donation boxes, over 400 of them, all belong to Hearts for the Homeless (Hearts), a nonprofit organization on Tonawanda Street in Buffalo. Hearts’ stated mission is to be a mobile soup kitchen that feeds the poor and homeless on the street, characterized by a profound spiritual motivation. In doing so, Hearts offers nourishing food, as well as winter clothing, pertinent information regarding area services, companionship, and hope for the future. Hearts was founded in 1990 on Christmas Eve as an outreach and feeding program, including a motor home which was the beginnings of its Mobile Soup Kitchen outreach. The ministry grew quickly, adding its reading program in 1991 and its first thrift store in 1996. Ultimately, Hearts would open two more thrift stores before merging them all into a larger one, Hearts Thrift Shop, in 1999 at its present location. Hearts Thrift Shop serves a dual purpose. Not only does it provide the community with gently used, quality clothing along with personal care items, toiletries, jewelry, toys, housewares, games, and free books, but also, after expenses, it uses all proceeds from Hearts Thrift Shop to support the operation of its Mobile Soup Kitchen and Hearts Harvest Pantry and Café. This is one of the primary ways that Hearts for the Homeless is able to fund its outreach. Hearts’ impact has become quite extensive. The nonprofit served over 13,000 of Buffalo’s poor and homeless in 2019 and are on track to serve even more of those in need this year. With more people out of work due to the coronavirus, Hearts for the Homeless and its outreach have been more critical than ever before. Christmastime is always one of the busiest times of the year for Hearts, but this year, it is even more special. On Christmas Eve, 2020, Hearts for the Homeless celebrated its 30th anniversary. Not only did they serve Buffalo’s poor and homeless at their annual Christmas Eve dinner, but they also continued their tradition of Hearts for the Homeless Red Donation Bins can be playing Santa. An found across Upstate New York from Buffalo excerpt from their almost to Syracuse! newsletter explains.

In Buffalo, many of those in need enjoy Christmas Eve Dinner, courtesy of Hearts for the Homeless & the Buffalo Dream Center!
All through the Christmas season, the phones and doorbells continuously ring with people who want to make an impact on those who are underprivileged. Several churches and the Boy Scouts donate toys and gifts to be handed out to needy families via our thrift shop. The surprise on the faces of parents that were coming in with hope to buy a thrift item to put under the tree is that of immeasurable joy when they are asked if they would like to pick out brand new gifts at no charge! This is a favorite time for our thrift shop staff. Hearts for the Homeless plans to go on serving the Buffalo community while continuing to pursue its dream of opening a Harvest Pantry & Café as yet another way to serve those in need while raising funds to continue their ministry. Donating gently used clothing, shoes, and household items allows many of us to be a small part of the incredible work they do. The next time you put a bag in one of these bins, know that this local effort truly is helping those in need.
“Hope for the future!”

Puzzle Answers This Week TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.
SPOTTED WORDS
Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Being specific when choosing goals is important, but it’s equally important to be as specific as possible in regard to developing a plan to realize those goals. Before embarking on a journey to realize your goals, figure out how you’re going to achieve them. Create a new daily or weekly schedule that allots time to realize your goals, seeking input from loved ones whose lives may be affected by your new schedule.

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.
Getty Images
Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family. Stock your pantry with the basics to make cooking quicker and easier. From condiments and canned goods to seasonings and spices, keeping the essentials on-hand means less time scrambling for a quick run to the store and more moments spent at home. (Family Features)

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Arrange for transportation. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up.
Get A Good View Having full view of w hat’s ahead and behind your vehicle, at all tim es, is vital, so be sure to check your w indshield w iper blades and w asher fluid before w inter precipitation hits. On a snow y or low -visibility day, you can easily go through half a gallon or m ore of w indshield w asher fluid trying to keep your view clear. For that reason, it’s also a good idea to keep som e extra fluid in the trunk in case you run out. In colder clim ates that experience ice or frost, you m ay w ant to keep a bottle of de-icing w indshield spray handy. Sim ply spray your icy w indshield w ith the fluid, turn on your vehicle defroster and your w indow s w ill clear quickly and easily.
DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. --DEAR READERS: As we close out one of the most tumultuous and stressful years of our lives, let’s look back and remember how much peace and joy our pets gave to us. When nothing else in the world seemed certain, we could count on our pets to offer unconditional love. That’s why, as we look forward to a new year and new hopes, we must honor and protect our best friends. Let’s resolve to: 1. Spend more time with our pets. Dogs and cats need regular attention and love. While we’re spending more time at home, it’s a perfect time to play with our pets, to add an extra training session and more walks into the routine. 2. Get pets the best care possible. Schedule that routine veterinary visit, and get your pets caught up on their vaccinations. A physical can head off serious illnesses. 3. Include your pets in your will. We don’t like to think about it, but end-of-life planning is important, and our pets need to be part of that planning. 4. Build lasting memories. Take as many photos with your pets as you can. Make scrapbooks that you can look through years from now to remember when your puppy was young, or to memorialize a beloved turtle, hamster, cat or dog. 5. Help other pet owners. So many people are silently struggling right now: either from job loss, ill health, grief or depression. They may not be able to take care of their pets as well as they can. Look out for your neighbors and offer to help if they ask for it. Donate money or supplies to local pet charities that offer assistance to pets and their owners. I wish you and your pets a happy, healthy 2021.

Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep • Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. • Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority.
3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Apartments Available! We have safe, affordable, and comfortable housing for you, with lots of amenities and activities. Come and see our renovated apartments and new fitness center.
1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
The Best You Can Do A show of hands, please. Is anybody else getting worn out by the current state of our lives? Is there anything we can do about it? All I wanted was a package of socks. That shouldn’t be hard. In the past, once a year or so, I’d stroll into the local store, grab a package off the shelf (especially happy when I found a bonus pack with 2 extra pairs in it), pay for it and walk out. And now? Now I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t dare walk into stores just to wander around, so I’m left to do my hunt on the internet. These particular socks are nowhere to be found ... except for the ones at three times the price on Amazon. Then there was the phone call from a neighbor, in the middle of my hunt, describing a new family panic. A family member is undergoing serious medical treatment. They just learned that his nurse tested positive for COVID. Is anyone else tired of the need for constant vigilance because of COVID? The inability to acquire basic goods and sometimes food? The constant sad stories of seniors who are in rehab centers who haven’t had visitors in months? That’s probably what breaks my heart the most, all those lonely seniors in nursing homes or retirement centers. I can’t do anything about the state of the world, but I can do this: Over the next week I’m going to send individual notes and cards to the residents of a local nursing home. I got all their first names and last initials from the facility director, and I’ve ordered a big box of miscellaneous greeting cards. Each one will get a note and a cheery card from me. Maybe it will help brighten their day for a few minutes. It’s the best I can do. c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Substitute for refined sugar: Refined sugar offers little to no nutritional value and is full of empty calories. Heathline says that honey has bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants as well as trace amounts of vitamins and minerals. The antioxidants in honey, which include phenols and flavonoids, may help prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke and some types of cancer.

A Big Thanks to Anthony at Hamlin Post Office I ordered stamps online, and somehow, I missed that they were going to be delivered to the same address as mine, but to Rochester, rather than to my correct city. Anthony, the postmaster in Hamlin, got up with me the following day. He was so kind and considerate. Immediately, he remedied my problem. He said that he would replace all four books of stamps. How kind! Within minutes of our phone conversation, our doorbell rings, and low and behold, it is Anthony personally delivering them to my home. I am so thankful that there are still kind and considerate people in the world. Sad to say, the people who got my four books of stamps, as of yet, have made no attempt to return what does not belong to them.
Brilliant books Just opened a gift that we got for our grandkids: an encyclopedia. Remember those? And it is wonderful! Beautifully illustrated with a terrific variety of interesting subjects and fun to read, and published by Britannica who has a rich history in encyclopedias. And the beauty of such a resource is that it pulls you into its pages and information more so than any website ever could. The power of the printed page is still first when it comes to recall and exposure to more ideas than a static computer screen. Give your brain a break. Turn off the internet and pick up a book!
Merry Christmas! On December 21st, my estranged daughter and I decided to meet for breakfast at Patty’s Place in Canandaigua. While we were there, someone bought our breakfast for us. I would like to thank that person. He or she has no idea how much that meant to me as I am a single mom trying to hold things together. I was moved literally to tears. It was an important day for my daughter and I as we are trying to mend fences, and this person added to this important breakfast and reminded both of us to give. Thank you so much! You are a blessing in this world.
Santa Mobile On Monday, December 21, the Riga Recreation “Santa Mobile” took flight over the roads of Churchville/Riga in search of unique and tastefully decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his trusty elves and others to choose the 14 homes and then give them “Secret Santa” gift cards purchased from local businesses. We were greeted by many surprised smiles and the cards were given to residents in a socially distant manner. (Yes, Santa had his mask on!) Thanks to Bailey, Brooke, Lily, Sue, Ryan, and Matt for all their help to bring precious smiles to the faces of the homeowners. Merry Christmas, Dave, Riga Recreation Supervisor

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
NO BRUSH, NO PROBLEM It happens all the time - maybe you forgot your toothbrush on an overnight away from home, or maybe you have a date right after work. Whatever the reason, you want to clean your teeth and you don’t have your toothbrush. There are a few things you can do to temporarily freshen your teeth and gums. Rinsing your mouth thoroughly with water after eating is one of the best things you can do for your teeth, and a habit you should adopt anyway. You can also end a meal with crunchy vegetables such as carrots or cucumbers or crisp apples, all of which can scrape plaque off your teeth. Avoid sugary desserts, which will feed the bad bacteria in your mouth.
We have lots of good ideas about helping you keep your mouth a healthy one. We strongly believe that one of the most important services we render our patients is a plan for preventive care. Along with daily brushing and flossing, one crucial tool to your good dental health is regular professional care. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we have office hours by appointment. Please call us at 585.343.4246. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, You Will Have A Positive Experience!
P.S. When you don’t have a chance to brush your teeth, try eating a piece of cheese, which has calcium and phosphates that can help restore tooth enamel and add minerals to the teeth.

you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous). ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 39

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an apple to prevent browning. * For stubborn dry patches on hands, like knuckles and around fingernails, try rubbing in a bit of Chapstick. It does the trick to moisturize, and it doesn’t wash off as easily. * “To protect feet from getting soggy when out in snowy or rainy weather, cut a piece of plastic wrap about 3 inches longer than your foot on both sides, then step on it and fold it up on all sides before you put your foot in your shoe. It also keeps feet warm.” -- M.S. in Colorado * “I use the old-fashioned round coffee filters to cover food in the microwave. Less expensive than paper plates and stays in place but doesn’t stick to food.” -- N.B. in Texas * D.R. in Illinois uses flip-flops for some unusual purposes, like covered with sandpaper as a sanding block, covered with a chamois for waxing a car or even to apply paint. He says they can be found on clearance for less than a dollar. One thing you shouldn’t do: “Don’t ever weed eat your driveway while wearing! Personal injury.”

York Central School THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.
