TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
Active Living 50+ ____________________22 Automotive _____________________8 Body & Mind ____________________12
The dawn of a new year represents a chance to start anew and set goals for the months ahead. New Year’s resolutions are often made to provide the motivation people need to improve their lives and make a new year as productive and happy as possible. While people who make New Year’s resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door.

We’ve Been Busy! Our local family-owned business continues to grow and evolve in 2024 and we want to take this opportunity to share with you all we have going on to start the year.
Printing We’re very excited to announce our long-term investment in new printing equipment that will arrive in February. We’re incredibly grateful for the history and longevity of our current machines, which arrived in the 1980s from East Germany. But as our capabilities have grown since then, so too has our need to update how we serve you. You might notice our Penny Saver size adjust to a standard 8.5x11 magazine format in the coming weeks. You might also notice the colors, registration and overall quality of our printing improve. We’re investing in us, so that we can invest in you for many years to come. A New Edition Coming this spring we’ll be adding a new weekly tenth edition in Wayne/Ontario counties. It will be distributed in the Macedon, Palmyra, Newark, Clifton Springs and Phelps communities. Please help us name this new edition by going online to gvpennysaver.com/nameit.

Forgotten Stories: The WWII German and Italian POWs of Oakfield, NY BY SUZIE WELLS
A
ccording to Military History Now, though “Hitler’s armies never invaded the US... hundreds of thousands of German troops did land on America’s shores – as prisoners of war.” At WWII’s peak, up to 30,000 POWs landed in US ports every month, and there were camps in almost every US state. There were up to 1,204 camps and hospitals for wounded enemies on US land for more than 370,000 German POWs, 51,000 Italian POWs, and 5,000 Japanese (MHN). At that time, with so many adult males away involved in the war effort in some capacity, these POWs labored for American farmers and businesses to keep our nation afloat. The prisoners were housed, fed, and paid for their labor quite humanely. Very few escaped, and many settled in the US after the war ended, again according to Military History Now.
The fish market “Hans” and his wife, Frieda, ran in Greifswalderstrasse, East Berlin. They lived in the apartment upstairs with their daughters, Lisolette and Margitta.
Oakfield historian Laurie Nanni shares the story of the town’s WWII POW camps: “In Oakfield, we had two POW camps during the end of WWII. The German POWs were held at the Haxton Canning Factory and the Italian POWs were held at the boarding house at the USG Paper Mill. Most of the [American] men were fighting the war, so there were not many men to do work here. Prisoners were brought mostly from Germany, and some were captured in Africa. “The Germans were under the watchful eye of armed guards in a complex with guard towers and a barbed wire fence. The Italians, on the other hand, only had guards, since midway through the war, the Italians became our nation’s allies instead of enemies. The Italians were allowed to “go home” on Sundays with other Italian families in town for dinner and to talk of the old country. “The Germans were all pretty young, some were artists and professionals, all forced to fight or their families would be killed. The Oakfield Museum at 7 Maple Ave now displays four drawings by a German artist POW. “Per 1929 Geneva Convention rules, the WWII German POWs were marched around the block of Maple Avenue for exercise, with guards at the front, back, and on the sides. They sang songs in German as they marched. They worked very hard and were well liked by the man in charge of them, Everett Smith. He was a fair man who appreciated industry. He even brought some of them to his home for a picnic a few times.
“On February 23, 2022, I received an email from CoraConstanze Sommerey, from Berlin, regarding her great uncle, Johannes Moran. They had recently found a death certificate saying he died in Oakfield, NY as a POW. The family never knew what happened to him. The Nazis came to his fish market he ran with his wife and put a gun to her head saying he had to go with them or they would kill her. They never saw him again. He had two young daughters at the time.” He was originally buried at Fort Niagara with military honors. They eventually moved the people in the cemetery there to Woodlawn Cemetery in Buffalo. Nanni said, “I was able to send the family pictures of his grave and an article regarding his death. His youngest brother was alive and in his 90s when they got my email. He cried for hours, finally knowing what happened to his brother.” From Cora-Constanze Sommeray, Johannes’ great niece – “From what my dad and my granddad told me about Hans, he and Frieda had a shop in Berlin, mainly selling fish, but also vegetables and coals. He would go on a regular basis from Berlin to Königsberg (Kaliningrad) to see my granddad and family, whistling at the garden fence and throwing his hat in the air. At family gatherings he was famous for entertaining by playing the accordion. He was so full of life and a real character.”
“One time, POWs escaped, but officials found the men. And we Johannes Maron’s tombstone had one German prisoner die while here. He opened a vat at the canning factory and was so badly burned by the steam that he went into cardiac arrest and died.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS Take the foreground into consideration. When you find an inspiring landscape to photograph, skip the empty landscapes and think about zeroing in on something interesting in the foreground. This can be a particularly attractive flower in front of a vast field, or even a rusty watering can left out in a row of crops. Items in the foreground impart interest in the photo.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Kennel or Sitter? Traveling Owner Can’t Decide DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am traveling for business in a few days and will be gone for just over a week. Because I can’t bring my dog Jasper with me, I’m trying to decide whether to board him at a nearby kennel or hire a dog-sitter instead. I’m worried about him contracting that respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs lately. What’s your recommendation? -- Todd G., via email DEAR TODD: Both of those options are fine -- as long as you take a few minutes to investigate both the kennel and interview the dog-sitter. Schedule a tour of the kennel facility so you can see the conditions Jasper will live in and talk to the staff. Has the kennel had any dogs develop kennel cough or other transmitted viruses recently? How often do they disinfect the kennels and play areas? How much exercise do the dogs get? Likewise, interview the dog-sitter in person, or over Zoom. How often will they visit Jasper -- once or twice a day? How often will Jasper get walks and play time? Will Jasper be the only dog being walked, or will he be part of a group of dogs? Is the dog-sitter insured, in case of accidents? Once you’ve decided which caregiver to place Jasper with, be sure they have your contact information in case of emergencies, and details about Jasper’s diet, type of food and medications. Place an article of clothing that has your scent on it in Jasper’s bag so that he is more comfortable whether staying at home or sleeping at the kennel. After you return, keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he’s healthy. If he is coughing or sneezing frequently, has a lot of nasal or eye discharge, and seems lethargic or uninterested in food, take him to the vet for an evaluation.

REDUCE DISTRACTIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL
AUTO SECTION
Geico indicates that studies have shown people are limited in the amount of information they can process at any one time. Driving requires focus and an ability to react to a host of potential circumstances. Distractions compromise drivers’ ability to focus. Reducing distractions can considerably cut down on the number of motor vehicle accidents each year.
• Check your tread to beat the snow : Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are ready for the w inter conditions before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires.

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
STRANGE BUT TRUE
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

* Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue. * Mob boss Vincent Gigante would wander around New York in his bathrobe to convince the police he was insane, and thus avoid capture.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer • Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.
ORAL HEALTH CARE AFTER IMPLANTS
• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards. • Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces. • Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Caring for dental implants is a lot like regular oral care: brush twice a day, floss daily, and see your dentist every six months. Proper implant care will help your implants and mouth remain healthy. You’ll want to switch to a brush with soft bristles if you’re not already using one since anything abrasive can damage your new teeth and cause swelling and pain. Likewise, abrasive toothpastes and mouthwashes should be avoided. Flossing is important to remove plaque, which can accumulate around dental implants just like real teeth. Implant-specific floss can help clean those hard-to-reach places. There are certain foods you should avoid with implants, especially hard, sticky foods like caramel and hard candies, which can damage implants. Following any dental procedures we perform in our office, we always provide patients with detailed home care

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our purpose in presenting this column is to exhibit the virtues of professional care in achieving and maintaining a healthy, vibrant smile. Through a combination of communication, compassionate concern and proven techniques and innovative technology, we attempt to move our patients toward an optimum state of oral health. What Dosage of NSAIDs Is Safe to Take After a Gastric Sleeve?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had weight-loss surgery, specifically an adjustable lap band that was revised to a gastric sleeve in 2018. I have been given and read conflicting recommendations regarding the use of NSAIDs following these procedures. I have read that taking a low dose (400 mg) is considered safe. I have also read and been told to take the children’s liquid form at an adult dosage rather than the tablets. I am a 57-year-old female. I have largely avoided taking NSAIDs for years, but I have developed osteoarthritis and find that I am taking them more often (400 mg once daily, one to two times a week at most). I do ensure that I take them with food and also take a Pepcid whenever I take ibuprofen. -- A.W. ANSWER: There are several types of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery, and the best evidence that I found among those who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass shows up to a 70% increase in the relative risk of developing peptic ulcers after surgery. This sounds pretty terrible, but it actually means that in an average time span of four years after surgery, 1.4% of people who didn’t take any NSAIDs got an ulcer, while 2.4% of the group that had the greatest amount of NSAID use developed an ulcer. However, the same study showed that only 0.2% of patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy developed an ulcer, and the use of NSAIDs did not significantly increase this number. Finally, other studies have shown that medicines like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce the risk of ulcers by about half when used long-term. NSAIDs always have risks, but for a person with a gastric sleeve, the risks of lowdose ibuprofen are modest and need to be weighed against the benefits for a person’s quality of life.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR In the heat of the New Year’s Eve countdown, fueled by enthusiasm and possibly a few glasses of champagne, resolutions may roll off of the tongue. But come the morning of January 1, such resolutions may not hold the same appeal. Between 40 and 45 percent of the American population will make a New Year’s Resolution, according to polling by researchers at the University of Scranton. Research suggests that only about 8 percent of people stick with those resolutions and achieve their goals. The outlook is similar for Canadians, 31 percent of whom set New Year’s resolutions. Among those that do, three-quarters will break them, according to a poll from Ipsos. A survey of online shoppers who visited the website FreeDeliveryLand.co.uk revealed that the average length of time a person can expect to pursue their New Year’s resolution is around three and a half weeks, or 24 days. Maintaining resolutions can be a resolution in and of itself. Resolutions are made and broken every year. Make this the year you realize your resolution.

Update the flooring. Tired, outdated carpeting or other flooring can use an overhaul. While solid hardwood flooring may be preferable, there are many types of laminate flooring that mimic the looks of popular wood colors and styles for a fraction of the cost. Plus, many are sold at home improvement retailers and even at warehouse clubs or online for reasonable prices. Laminate flooring also may be a potential DIY job for a skilled homeowner, saving even more money.

DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Here’s a Tip • Sources who know say that if you drop a marble (clean glass) in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling. • Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions. • Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s highchair to make cleaning up the floor easier. * Air-popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have less unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn. -- E.M. in Wisconsin (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

Backed by 164 years in the Memorial Business Woodside Granite Ind., Inc. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
Take a moment to let a business owner know you saw their ad in the Penny Saver, tell a friend about an upcoming event or like any of our posts on social media. These small gestures make all the difference to us.

Huge Thank You I stopped at Food Mart to pick up a couple of things on my way to a get together, and lost my debit card. Luckily I was able to pay for my items another way, but I was frantic about losing my card. Some good samaritan found it and left it at the office. There really are good people in the world! Thank you so much.

Hooray for the Medical Aftercare by Rochester Regional Health Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” was written in 1850 as a love poem for another person. I want to share the ways I love what Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has done to help my wife Dianne (81) since a recent six-day stay at Rochester General Hospital for heart-related issues. Since coming home from the hospital, the follow-up care by RRH has been Tremendous. RRH provided a slew of medical equipment, such as a blood pressure device, oxygen meter reader, great scale commode, and two four-prong walkers for use upstairs and downstairs in our home. RRH has provided me a Telemedicine number to call in her vitals. RRH provided a 24/7 nurse contact for medical issues. There have been periodic visits of physical therapists, nurses, and a social worker. RRH has been God-sent with all the follow-up being provided for Dianne, my dear wife of 59 years. So, “How Do I Love RRH?” A whole lot and Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Love, Joe and Dianne Borzelliere
Driving With A Dog In Your Lap Driving under the influence of drugs/ alcohol, speeding, running stop lights/ signs are several illegal potentials that could cause serious harm to a driver or passengers or the same to those in another vehicle. PLEASE help me understand why drivers can navigate one handed while a dog sits in their lap? Driving with a dog in your lap may impede the proper functioning of an air bag/seat belt if in a collision, which may be a significant hazard to the dog, the driver and/or others in the vehicle. PLEASE tell these reckless drivers they’re a danger to themselves, their pets and others. Wake up and keep your eyes on the road and not your darn dog!

Pavilion Cloverleaf Call 716-860-9129 DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
