FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

We Care About
We make your smile our number one priority!
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
A DENTAL SOLUTION FOR A BREATHING PROBLEM Like many other medical conditions, sleep apnea has different forms, each with its own treatment mode. Surprisingly, one of them comes from the dentist. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form, occurs when the tongue and soft pallet block the sleepers’ airways, causing them to stop breathing multiple times during the night. Severe OSA may need to be treated with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, but mild to moderate OSA can often be addressed with a dental appliance that keeps the tongue from sliding back and blocking the airway. These devices are molded to the teeth of each individual patient by the dentist and may require a few visits to adjust the fit.
If you have questions about breathing problems and sleep apnea, be sure to discuss your concerns with us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We bring you our weekly dental column in order to keep you up-to-date on the latest research, innovations, and procedures available in dentistry today and to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia how the many benefits of modern oral care can enhance their lives. New patients are always welcome at our state-of-theart office at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment.
P.S. Using a dental device to help with obstructed sleep apnea may result in bite changes, so a morning repositioner should be used to realign the bite.

RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles On Medicare? Beware of COVID Card Scam Have you received a phone call asking if you’ve received your new “special” Medicare COVID card? Beware: There is no such thing. It’s a scam. I did receive such a call. The person on the other end asked if I’d received my new card, which I’d heard nothing about, and proceeded to try to ask me a number of questions. She claimed there are a lot of fancy benefits that come with the COVID card. In the name of research for this column, I did not hang up immediately as I usually do. Instead, I went along with the caller, listening but not providing any information. I asked where they’d gotten my name and was told they were accessing the Medicare database. I was quickly convinced it was a scam. I hung up and called the Medicare fraud line to report it. The fraud people were very glad I did. Other forms of COVID scams include offering fast eligibility for the vaccine, fake vaccine sign-up websites, fake testing and wellness kits, and fake contact tracers who want to know your Medicare card number. Fact: There is no new Medicare card for COVID. Fact: Medicare isn’t going to call you about anything unless you have called or written to them and asked them to contact you by phone. If you receive a call such as the one I got, hang up immediately and then call to report it. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227), or HHS at 1-800-447-8477. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
How Long Can Dog Stay Outside in the Snow? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog loves to go outdoors, but I worry that it’s too cold and icy for her to be outside right now. I’m housebound and unable to take “Sookie” out for walks or to play in the snow. I have a fenced yard, but I can’t supervise her. My younger neighbor takes her out every morning for a few minutes, and that’s it. What can I do? -- Sara P., Bennington, Vermont DEAR SARAH: Big props to your neighbor for helping to take care of Sookie! Even on cold winter days, a few minutes outside can be uplifting for your dog. And a “relief,” if you know what I mean. If Sookie stays in the fenced yard and comes when you call her, it may be safe to let her out once or twice during the day. How long she stays out depends on her size and cold tolerance. Very small dogs should not be outside for more than a few minutes when it’s below freezing, and should be wrapped up to get warm again quickly. Medium and large dogs can tolerate longer periods. The colder the air and the more ferocious the weather, the less time they should spend outside. When your dog comes in, either from her morning walk or from the fenced yard, rub down her fur with a dry towel and check the underside of her paws for cuts and abrasions. If she is shivering when she comes in, make sure she warms up, and ask your neighbor to bring her in a little sooner. FACTORS THAT IMPACT AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUMS Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums. AUTOMOTIVE

* If you have a steel or metal door, stick a few magnets on the inside for a handy spot to attach reminders and other notes. If your door is wood, just attach a piece of corkboard to a strip of the door. With pushpins, it works the same way. * “If you find a pretty bottle of lotion, you can refill it when it runs out. I add a little bit of essential oils to my store-brand lotion.” -- G.E. in California * Remove white rings on wood tables with mayo! Slather a spoonful of mayonnaise on the spot and let it stand for an hour or so. Wipe clean. Repeat as necessary. * Use nail polish in bright colors to mark the settings on your washer. The nail polish doesn’t wear off like a marker might. * Got unmatched socks? Save them for the grandkids to use for hand puppets. You can help them sew buttons on, and use yarn for hair. A barrette can be glued or sewn on for a nose. * “Here’s a DIY softener sheet for the dryer. Just cut up an old shirt into small squares about the size of your hand. Use a sealable jar and add liquid fabric softener and water in equal parts, and then add all the squares to the liquid. When you move clothes from the washer into the dryer, take a piece, squeeze it out and toss in the dryer. They are reusable -- afterward, just put it back in the jar!” -- D.R. in Florida

Shoppers can rely on Edmunds. com to search for rebates and incentives by vehicle make and geographic location.
Say “I
You” to your Community: Shop Local for Valentine’s Day! By Amanda Dudek
I
t is no secret that 2020 left many local businesses struggling. In fact, in its September 2020 Economic Impact Report, popular review platform, Yelp, reported that 163,735 businesses had shut down by August 31st, 60% of them never to reopen. According to data from the Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, employers with fewer than 100 workers account for 98.2% of all businesses. The clear majority, these “small” businesses are the backbone of our communities. “American business is overwhelmingly small business,” states the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council. That they are in such desperate straits is concerning, a fact with which many Americans agree, so much so that the plight of local businesses has kickstarted a shop local trend. According to Mint Personal Finance, a personal financial management company, 1 in 5 consumers were focused on shopping small businesses in the winter of 2020, and one third of shoppers bought more gift cards from these businesses. Heading into 2021, the trend has remained strong. Red Egg Marketing, a Colorado marketing agency, found that a resounding 83% of American consumers would prefer to purchase local products over national products, and 84% were willing to spend a bit more to do so. The reason? A survey by Mint Personal Finance reports consumers’ primary motivation is to keep money local, followed by supporting their community and local creators, a better service experience, and supporting nonprofits. Those remaining local shops, eateries, and other establishments have and continue to survive on the loyalty and mindful spending choices each of us make every day.
companies have become shopping habits for many consumers, and as with most habits, changing these patterns will take time, mindfulness, and perhaps a few new options.
Planning a special Valentine’s Day? Try one or more of our tips, and show some extra love to local businesses while you’re at it! • Budget for local shopping. This tip is so intuitively simple it’s easy to miss. Rather than merely hoping to remember to make a purchase or find necessities locally, just add local spending dollars to your monthly budget. Then, make it a point – and a pleasure – to spend those dollars locally as you see fit! Even a modest amount will make a difference. For example, if every family in the country spent just $10 locally each month, over $9.3 billion would stay local, according to United We Stand and Civic Economics Andersonville Study of Retail Economics. • Shop your favorite local businesses online. Have you searched for your favorite boutique online? Check again! For better or for worse, COVID-19 has changed the way people shop. During shutdowns, many items were only available online as brick-and-mortars temporarily closed their doors. Even now, as more and more businesses resume some open hours, many consumers continue to appreciate the convenience of online shopping. Fortunately, one faint silver lining was that temporary closures encouraged several of local retailers to take their business online. So, before you click on an online retailer, do a quick local search instead. You might be surprised!
Does shopping local really keep that much more money in my community? Absolutely! Shopping local keeps up to 4Xs as much money in your community than shopping at chains. According to multiple sources, at least 48% of every purchase at a local business is recirculated locally compared to just 14% of chain purchases and virtually 0% from online retailer purchases. As AMIBA (American Independent Business Alliance) puts it, “Buying remotely on the web creates almost no local benefit – just a few minutes’ work for a delivery person.” The difference is clear.
Ready to Shop Local? Check out our tips! Wait. Isn’t shopping local as simple as going to a local business and making a purchase? Well, yes and no. While we certainly hope you will frequent local businesses as much as possible, we recognize that shopping with online retailers as well as opting to shop at chain

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

To all our readers, if you can be sure to keep clean your walkways and areas around your mailboxes, that is a huge help!
Billieve! Congratulations to the Buffalo uffalo uff alo Bills! Although they didn’t win the he AFC Championship that we were hoping for, they had an amazing season! Thank you for providing excitement and entertainment to an otherwise dreary few months. Thank you… To all those who check on their neighbors, run errands, write notes, and make phone calls to those who are housebound due to COVID or bad weather. It means a lot. Hats off Hats off to our GVPS Adult Carriers and Postal Workers that get our beloved Penny Saver delivered week in and week out during these Winter months laced with Covid.
How ‘bout them Browns! and Bills! A few decades ago, the Cleveland Browns were an extremely popular and followed team in Western New York, for a couple of reasons: they were pretty good and fun to watch; their games were picked up in the Rochester area and hence grew a fan base. Wonderful that they bested the Steelers two weeks in a row to make the playoffs. And the Bills almost making the Super Bowl was quite an accomplishment for such a young team. Both teams’ futures look bright!
Vaccines So sad to see the cupboard bare when it comes to vaccines. The past administration just could not come to grips with reality and now we continue to pay the price. Stay safe everyone and where your mask!
to change the trajectory.” Strange that NY, California and Chicago all magically decide to open back up? Some might even say American businesses and lives and educations were ruined for politcal gains. At least we won’t have mean tweets.
It’s going to be a long four years. The first week in office was a bust. Putting thousands out of work and the environment at risk by ending Keystone, opening the southern border and worst of all the answer for CV-19 is, “nothing we can do
Cheers! Cheers to Section 5 and the decision to have Winter sports at the High School level. If the teams cooperate with the Covid rules, they should be able to enjoy their sports!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
This Rapid Heartbeat Appears Normal on EKG ---
NOTICE
DEAR DR. ROACH: I had symptoms of lightheadedness,
West Batavia Rentals
so my doctor ordered an EKG and sent me to a cardiologist. They did a heart monitor for a week and said I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia but that I don’t need any treatment. I’m still having symptoms. What can I do? -- B.V. ANSWER: Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is an uncommon diagnosis, most often seen in women in their 30s. The heart rate is fast (“tachycardia”), but on an EKG it appears normal, meaning it comes from the sino-atrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart, hence “sinus.” The average heart rate must be over 90 for 24 hours. It’s important to be sure there isn’t another cause for the tachycardia, such as elevated thyroid levels, fever, volume depletion (dehydration) or anemia. The symptoms may continue for months or even years. Common symptoms include the lightheadedness you felt, but may also include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness and decreased ability to exercise. The diagnosis can sometimes be confused with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), where the heart rate dramatically increases with changing to an upright position. A tilt-table test is the diagnostic tool for POTS. If there is no other reason for sinus tachycardia, then medication may be used to reduce symptoms. A beta blocker is the usual first choice, but there are others available. I found some more information at https://tinyurl.com/ ISTheart that may be useful for you.

DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a woman going crazy with hair loss. My hair has always been long and thick, but it is coming out in handfuls. I can only think it must be due to my blood pressure medicines. I’ve been taking amlodipine and lisinopril for years. I’m in good health and 90 years young. -- M. ANSWER: It is unlikely that the hair loss is due to either amlodipine or lisinopril. Neither of these are well described to provoke hair loss, and if a medicine is going to do that, it usually does within a few months. The most common cause of hair loss in a 90-year-old woman is female pattern hair loss, in which the hair loss is mostly on the front and top of the scalp. However, there are several causes of hair loss, and a dermatologist may be helpful in determining the cause and treatment. Please don’t stop taking your blood pressure medicine. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.
