PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

DRY SOCKET SOLUTIONS Dry socket is a painful condition that sometimes occurs after a tooth extraction. Normally, a blood clot forms over the extraction site when a tooth is removed. The blood clot protects the underlying bone and nerves in the empty tooth socket. It also provides the foundation for new gum tissue and bone to form over the socket. Dry socket happens when the blood clot fails to form or dislodges before the extraction site has healed, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. It usually occurs one to three days after an extraction. To treat dry socket, your dentist will remove any food debris from the tooth socket and then fill it with a medicated paste or dressing. We dedicate ourselves to keeping our patients out of the dental chair with our focus on prevention. We

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

donating plasma (not blood) because my iron that day was 57 mcmol/L, and the maximum allowable was 54 mcmol/L. I was rescheduled to get retested in a few days. The technician said to eat beans and similar foods to lower my iron levels. I checked my own records and didn’t find any results that fell below the cutoff. My red blood cell count was 5.15; my white blood cell count was 6.0; my hemoglobin level was 16.1 g/dL; and my hematocrit level was 48.5%, all within the healthy range. Which test results could they be referring to, and how do I lower my iron? -- S.L. ANSWER: Blood banks typically screen donors for anemia, which is frequently caused by iron deficiency, but I’m confused as to why they are screening you with iron tests because that is typically not done. Moreover, they are telling you that your iron is too high, which is the opposite of the iron-deficiency anemia that is usually looked for. I recommend that you see your own physician and get retested. If we take the blood bank at their word, and your iron level is too high, that raises the possibility of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH), which is caused by a defect of iron absorption. With this condition, your body absorbs as much iron as possible, even if it doesn’t need any. This causes iron overload, which damages the heart, liver, bone marrow, adrenal glands, skin and joints, just to name a few. HH is easy to treat once the diagnosis is made. However, making the diagnosis requires thinking about the possibility, and it’s uncommon enough that a lot of healthcare professionals don’t think about it right away. Your doctor should test your iron and ironbinding capacity, as well as your ferritin level, which tends to correlate with the total amount of body iron stores. But I don’t want to jump to conclusions, which is why your own doctor should test you to see if you really do have excess iron.

2. WINTERTIME CAN BE ‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN TO DISCOVER Winter storms are on the way. While many people are anxious to see landscapes covered in white, others already are counting down the days to spring blooms. Weather can be awe-inspiring and interesting, and learning the secrets about snow is no exception. Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet. Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice. Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick. According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887.

3.

Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance. Even though snow is more common in northern elevations and cold regions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls. While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season.

1. Beautiful December sky

Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low.

SPORTS • EVENTS CELEBRATIONS VACATIONS

Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories.

Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment.

Holiday Good Samaritans Save the Day I wish to thank 3 VERY kind people when our car died at Wegmans Holt Rd parking lot Sat., 12/30 at 10:30AM. I foolishly left my phone at home with my AAA contact info. A Gretchen’s Hallmark clerk let me use her phone to call my sister who wasn’t home. A Wegmans customer service person was very eager to help IF I couldn’t find a cable jump from another car in the lot. While I was in Wegmans, a man saw my husband with the hood up and offered a jump (he refused payment). The car started immediately and these 2 panic stricken seniors were SO relieved at the ‘kindness of strangers.’ Blessings to all of you and may I be so lucky to “pay this kindness forward!”

RANTS RANTSRANTS

RAVES RAVES RAVES

The Coffee Press - 12/20/23 @ 9:10AM I wanted to say thank you to a kind stranger who assisted me at The Coffee Press on 12/20/2023 at around 9:10-9:25AM. I was at The Coffee Press where they had frosted Christmas cookies displayed. I grabbed one and when I went to pay for it, I was told that it was Cash Only. As I was about to exit The Coffee Press a young man who was another customer stopped me and handed me a cookie and wished me a Merry Christmas. What this individual did not know at that moment was that I was trying to buy the cookie for my mom, who is in the final stages of dementia. Those frosted cookies are one of the few things that she enjoys and that’s why I wanted to purchase one to bring to her. She enjoyed them immensely. Unfortunately in my rush, I do not feel that I thanked this kind stranger enough and hope to return the favor and hope someone can help me. The person was in their 20s, dark-haired and accompanied by a couple of friends. Thanks! AP.

Get Off Your Cell Phone While shopping at our local big box store I ran into a mini traffic (shopping cart) jam. Four people trying to get down an isle at the same time. We were all patiently waiting for a lady to move over then realized she was on her cell phone, oblivious to others. Finally, one squeezed past her and had the audacity to touch carts going through. The look she gave him was ridiculous! I honestly believe if she said anything to him he would’ve grabbed her phone and thrown it across the store. If you’re on your phone, move out of the way. Plus nobody wants to listen to your conversations! New Medical Building Needs Improvements The cavernous, centralized out-of-town medical building lacks aged/disabled community information. Barrier free, and medical bus transport parking information needs to become disseminated. Hours, phone numbers, and floor locations of these various, now centralized medical offices need to become publicly well-advertised. While centralized services may be useful in urban areas, rural villages' smaller, convenient, local offices are at an unfortunate loss, especially with this region's tricky weather. Telephone calls to one's primary provider receptionists are often on hold for one half hour to make an appointment, which is much too long. These improvements could be implemented without great cost to corporate and make this behemoth more responsive to this aged, agrarian community's medical needs.

Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades working. However, many retirees find that little structure loses it appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also benefits their brains.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

Susan B. Anthony House: A Glimpse into the Heart of Suffrage History BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n preparation for the upcoming Day of History competition, my daughter and her groupmates recently joined their teacher at Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony house. Thankfully, the group didn’t mind me and another daughter tagging along for the tour that day. What a treasure right in town! Unassuming from the outside (though a little taller than expected, and we learned Anthony’s team outgrew the space and raised the roof to add a third floor so the team could have more space), I would never have imagined 17 Madison St. held such a treasure. On our visit, we toured the spaces Anthony, her family, and her suffragist team called home through those incredible years. The preservation and education organization has done an incredible job bringing history alive for visitors. Their goal/vision statement of inspiring others through Anthony’s life and work truly seems effective. Born in Adams, MA in 1820, the second of seven children, Anthony attended school in Battenville, NY but she and her sister were pulled from school when their father Daniel learned the girls weren’t allowed to learn the same subjects as the boys. The Anthony family then opened their own home to serve as a school, teaching boys and girls as equals. The family moved to Rochester in 1845, and the following year Susan began teaching at Canajoharie Academy. The Anthony household became a meeting place for anti-slavery activists such as Frederick Douglass. In 1851, Anthony attended an anti-slavery convention in Seneca Falls, and the rest was history. Never one to allow someone else to tell her what to think or say, Anthony met with Amelia Bloomer (founder of the very-practical pants, allowing women freedom of movement with their attire) and listened to impassioned speeches at the convention. There, she also met Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Anthony and Stanton ended up quite the pair as the movement gained traction. Anthony is known for her confidence, her courage in the face of adversity, her legal expertise, and her poignant speeches. The SBA House docent shared a few nuggets such as Anthony’s purposeful choice to always wear modest, no frills, black and white acceptably feminine outfits so her audience would pay attention to her ideas and not simply comment on or criticize her for statement-making attire, such as happened when Bloomer and other such revolutionaries tried to share their opinions but with socially unacceptable bloomers on. Anthony, her sister Mary, and their mother Lucy, moved into the Madison St. home in 1865 as tenants. Lucy purchased the home a year later, and Mary purchased it from her mother in 1873. Susan purposefully never married, so she could focus on her anti-slavery and women’s rights campaign, free to travel solo and spread the word. Traveling often by train or coach, Anthony traveled light but became known for her purse.

swim,” and they call for the doctor, the nurse, and the lady with the alligator purse. Over the years, I had forgotten how the rhyme went, except that versions always had the lady with the alligator purse prescribe something other than penicillin or aspirin as the doctor and nurse did (I seem to remember she prescribes pizza). According to the docent, the rhyme ends with the lady with the alligator purse saying “Vote!” We should all treasure our freedom and rights to vote by educating ourselves on the issues of the day, and making our voices heard through the ballot box as women such as Anthony worked hard to attain. “One of the world’s greatest revolutionaries,” Anthony was famously arrested in Rochester in 1872 for voting when it was not yet socially acceptable (and debatably legal) for women to do so. As the docent explained, Anthony happily let herself be arrested instead of quietly paying a fine and being scolded. As she awaited trial, she continued to lecture and spread ideas of women’s and African American rights, stirring up so much controversy that she had to be tried in the next county over. Hence, the Ontario County Courthouse in Canandaigua famously hosted her trial. Anthony’s trial itself caused controversy. She was fined $100 after the judge refused to hear Anthony’s arguments and ordered the jury to find her guilty. However, as the docent explained with a laugh, Anthony never paid that fine because she felt it unjust. Anthony died in 1906, unfortunately years before women officially attained the right to vote, but to this day, women across Rochester trek to Mt. Hope Cemetery, placing their I Voted stickers on her grave, paying homage and thanking Anthony for her hard work and service. February 7th, the organization celebrates Anthony’s birthday “in the same way [she] hosted her birthday celebrations during her lifetime; this will be an opportunity to encourage one another in the pursuit of equality and give in support of the mission.” Explore the “Tracks of Change” laid by Susan B. Anthony that guide us to a stronger, more just community,” as the organization says. What an incredible historical resource we have right in the city. For more information, visit susanb.org.

Upstairs in Anthony’s office, when the docent showed us Anthony’s iconic alligator purse and recollected the children’s rhyme of Miss Lulu (I remember Miss Lucy or even Miss Suzie, which was fun, because my own name was in a song not made up by me) and her baby, Tiny Tim, who she “put in the bathtub to see if he could

POLL What area landmarks do you fondly remember that have changed dramatically or disappeared over the years?

Human beings are not the only creatures looking for warm and cozy spots to ride out autumn and winter. Very often wild animals see homes as the perfect spots to nest and survive the cold. Fall is a great time to inspect your home top to bottom and make sure there are no points of entry for unwanted guests. The Humane Society notes that deteriorated trim and fascia boards can make great entry points for animals like squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and possums. Other animals may bed down under porches or decks or even inside chimneys. Seal any holes or repair points that are penetrable by cold animals. Just be sure to inspect the home prior to sealing or capping any potential entry points to be certain there aren’t any animals already living inside. Otherwise you can trap unwanted animals in your home. Test possible entry points by sealing them loosely with a paper towel or insulation and see if the material gets pushed out.

COLD MEDICINE INGREDIENTS CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE (NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Problem Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association. Read The Label Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements. And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor. Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance. Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Here’s a Tip * If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bath mat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support and your hands will not slide. * Sunburn happens in the winter too, especially on the slopes. Use a cotton ball soaked in cold tea to ease tight dry skin. Be sure you apply sunscreen to your face and wear eye protection when going out to play in the snow. * For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. * If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, you can bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Did You Know? A transient ischemic attack, often referred to as a “mini stroke,” is an event that’s similar to a stroke. When a person has a TIA, the symptoms are just like those of a stroke, but they last less than 24 hours before disappearing. However, that disappearance does not mean a person is in the clear, as a TIA is a serious warning sign of stroke.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

How to Give Your Pet a Healthy, Happy New Year DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This week, many Americans are celebrating their newest gift to the family: a cute puppy or kitten, duck or chicken, or pocket pets like hamsters and guinea pigs. It’s also a time to form new resolutions in anticipation of the New Year. I hope that new pet owners’ first resolution will be to establish a relationship with a veterinarian with expertise in their specific pet. Some pets need to start or continue a vaccination schedule so they grow up healthy -- puppies are at risk of contracting parvovirus, for example, so bolstering their immune system is very important. Your vet can also provide advice and tips for caring for pets. Guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits communicate happiness or distress in unique ways that a new owner may not be familiar with. Puppies are wiggly and energetic. Kittens are curious and fearless. Vets can help new owners navigate these waters and provide regular checkups to help keep pets healthy. -- Dedicated Vet in Boston DEAR DEDICATED: Thank you for sending this! Establishing a care routine with a veterinarian is so important. It should sit at the top of owners’ to-do lists, along with providing comfortable warm bedding, a clean and safe environment, and especially for puppies, a daily training routine. Mark your calendar with key dates, including checkups with the vet, appointments with a trainer and regular resupply of food, litter, bedding and everything else your new pet needs. Backed by 164 years in the Memorial Business Woodside Granite Ind., Inc. Clara E. Hill January 2, 2024 Clara E. Hill, 87, of the Tonawanda Indian Reservation, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Clara was born on March 16, 1936, in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Russell and Ruby Snyder Hill. She was a member of the Hawk Clan. Clara worked for the Genesee County Department of Social Services for over 30 years. She was the permanent Clerk of Six Nations Agricultural Society and Treasurer of the Peter Doctor Memorial Scholarship Fund. Clara loved to travel after her retirement and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bowling and going out to eat with family and friends. Clara is survived by several cousins. Friends may call Friday, January 5, 2024 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 E. Main Street, Corfu, NY. Funeral services will be held from the mortuary on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 1 PM. Burial will be in the Baptist Church Cemetery, Basom, NY. THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.
