I am Trip, a Setter Mix. I was adopted from Blue Moon Meadows in Avon. I must keep lookout to the street. I am well known in my kingdom neighborhood and love to be friends with everyone. My owner says my newest friend is my best friend. I live happily with my two sisters who were also adopted from BMM! I love the outdoors – even laying in the snow while the family is in the warm house.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Having enough B3, also know n as niacin, is important for overall health, and higher levels of niacin can improve cholesterol levels and low er a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. B6 is also called pyridoxine. It’s involved in the process of making certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin and norepinephrine, w hich transmit signals in the brain. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-in-thedark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * “Peppermint is a wonderful cure for indigestion. To make a quick peppermint tea, use a rolling pin to smash three to four peppermint candies. Add them to a glass of water and microwave for a minute and a half. Stir to melt the candies completely, and drink slowly.” -- G.L. in California * Don’t stop reading just because it’s hard to get to a library! Many public libraries are offering delivery services these days. My local library will let you reserve books online for quick pickup, renew your due date or even have books delivered to your home. Some have regular seminars on all kinds of topics -- and many of them are done virtually.

* If you are replacing a hinge to rehang a door and you need to use the same holes, make sure you add grip by placing a matchstick or toothpick in the hole before rescrewing the attachments. Just break it off flush with the frame. It will add some security to the hole so it won’t be as loose. * Maintain a list of all drugs you take -both prescription and over the counter -- and when you fill a new prescription, give a copy to your pharmacist to check for interactions. Also, if you have multiple or complicated medical issues, it might help to patronize a single pharmacy. That way, the pharmacist can advise you of any interactions or complications. * “My mother swears by wrapping her feet in a vinegar-soaked rag once a week to soften calluses. She does this before her bath, and uses a pumice stone to rid her heels of hardened spots on the skin. It seems to work for her, so I thought I would pass it on!” -- C.D. in Colorado GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Free Community Papers of NY and

National Award Winning Paper

Gold Standard Publication

REAL ESTATE

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 3, 1917, the U.S. Congress passes the War Revenue Act, increasing income taxes to unprecedented levels in order to raise more money for World War I. While only 5% of the U.S. population was required to pay taxes, U.S. tax revenue increased from $809 million in 1917 to $3.6 billion the following year.

Q &A with the

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

How do I get rid of bishop’s weed? It invaded a bed of lily of the valley and I donít want to kill that as well. - Kathleen C. Bishop’s weed has an incredibly dense root system which is quite difficult to eradicate. You would need to remove the lily of the valley plants, then smother the entire bed for at least six growing months; a year would be more effective. The ground is frozen during December,

January, February, and March, so plants are dormant, not growing. Before replanting your lily of the valley, completely remove all current soil from the roots by soaking and using a forceful hose. Cover the area with landscape fabric or 6 layers of newspaper with overlapping edges, then top with several inches of mulch. Secure the edges with stones or branches. The newspapers will gradually disintegrate, but you would need to pull out the landscape fabric. If you don’t remove the fabric, it will

gradually break down in to smaller pieces, become mixed into the soil, and impede root growth. Watch the edges of this area during growing months, and spray any bishop’s weed plants that emerge with herbicide.

Are you approaching 65 or considering changes to your existing Medicare Advantage or Supplemental policy? With the Annual Enrollment Period coming up 10/15/2020 - 12/07/2020 The McGowan Group, Inc can review your choices.

Making health insurance decisions can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. As an Independent Broker, we Healthcare specialize in advising those who are Medicare eligible having Part A and Part B, those 65 and over, disabled after 24 months, and those in end stage renal failure. By contacting The McGowan Group, Inc you will work directly with John or with one of his agents. All agents are trained and certified each year to make sure they are up-do-date with all policy changes. We take great pride in being contracted with multiple carriers, offering opinions and recommendations which are truly unbiased. With over 17 years of experience in the Insurance Industry, John McGowan founded The McGowan Group, Inc. in 2019 to help Brokers and agents change an industry which has never before seen such a call for Medicare understanding. In fact, the needs of John’s own grandmother first urged him to unravel the Medicare process 4 years ago. Now residing in Pittsford, John has maintained an office space in Batavia for several years. In January 2021 he will also have a new location! He feels it’s important to work with someone who has roots in the

community as well as an in-depth understanding of insurance, whether one goes to Buffalo or Rochester for services. John and his team encourage annual meetings with clients because income, health, and traveling needs often change. We offer a complete analysis, determine whether you should come off a group plan, review COBRA and even help many under 65 find a plan on the New York State of Health Marketplace. Together, we can take the time to find a plan that best suits you based on your prescriptions, doctor network and income. Schedule an appointment today!

Call John McGowan Medicare & Benefits Consultant 585.297.4307 and by email at jmcgowan.insurance@gmail.com For Medicare Information stop by 41 Liberty St. (Fireside Entrance) or 31 Batavia City Centre next to LeBeau Salon.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Now More Than Ever, Get Your Flu Shot A sincere wish just came true: This year's high-dose senior version of the flu shot will contain all four vaccines. In past years, the senior shot (for those over age 65) contained only three of the vaccines, two A and one B. Most years I would write a snarly note to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ask about the reason for the false economy. Of course I never got a reply, but now ... finally, we seniors will have a flu shot with all four vaccines. And what a shot it will be. The four vaccines are names we haven't heard in a while, if ever: A/Guangdong-Maonan (H1N1), A/ Hong Kong (H3N2), B/Washington and B/Phuket. To help us kick start our immune system, the senior version will contain four times the amount that younger folks get. The standard trivalent (threeway) will have two A and one B, while the standard quadrivalent (four-way) has all four. If your doctor says you should have a flu shot, don't delay. When I called my pharmacy (where I get my flu shots each year), the first appointment was many days out, and they had been swamped with requests for the shot. Yes, they will be resupplied when they run out, but no, they didn't know how quickly that would be. By getting a flu shot, should you get sick later this season, it will be a good bet that it's not the regular flu, which will save much time in getting a diagnosis. To find flu shots, call your doctor, local pharmacies, grocery stores or go to vaccinefinder.org. If you have a Medicare or insurance card, you won't have to pay anything. If you want to know more, check the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/ flu/season/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT (NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits.

Call For Special Offers In Your Area Pricing varies by region

CALL TODAY - LIMITED SPECIAL OFFERS IN YOUR AREA!

1-855-973-9254 HughesNet is a registered trademark of Hughes Network Systems, LLC, an EchoStar Company. 2 If you exceed your monthly plan data, you will experience reduced data speeds until the start of your next billing period. Reduced speeds will typically be in the range of 1 – 3 Mbps and may cause Web sites to load more slowly or affect the performance of certain activities, such as video streaming or large downloads/uploads.

“Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year.

Small to Large Jobs… Let us save you money repairing! • • • • •

The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond. To find more tips and resources for weight management and healthy living during the holidays and every day, visit the NIDDK website: https://www. niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management. LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2020 SUMMER GAZEBO CONCERT SERIES! The Riga Recreation Department just concluded its very successful 2020 Summer Gazebo Concert Series at the Village of Churchville Gazebo. In the tine of this health crisis, we were able to provide the community with some muchneeded relief. Many, many thanks to the following organizations that made all of this possible in these times of uncertainty: NYS Senator Michael Ranzenhofer’s Office, the Town of Riga, the Village of Churchville, the Churchville Lion’s Club and the following musical performers: Curbside Pickup, Blue Sky, Johnny Bauer, 8 Days a Week,

and Generations. -DaveThomas, Riga Recreation Supervisor ABOVE AND BEYOND! I want to give a huge thank you to all delivery people for making sure my parcels and mail arrive. A special thank you goes to our local FedEx. I order from Chewy frequently, and some of the items are excessively heavy. I have a pet that has allergies, and I am finding it difficult right now finding unscented products along with special animal food in our local stores. FedEx has no idea why I order what I do, but I wanted to let them know that they do an excellent job, and I am very pleased with their work ethic. THANK YOU I would like to

thank all of the wonderful friends that have helped us through the passing of our son JP. Thank you to all who came to the wake as JP would have loved this. Also, thank you to all who have stopped by to give condolences, brought food, flowers and cards, and donations to GG’s future education and for checking on us. Thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department for their help. We can’t get by without you. Thank you to Pastor Colin Pritchard for staying with Jessica the night JP passed away and for the wonderful words at the wake. We are so thankful for you coming. We feel blessed to know that JP was loved by so many. We miss you JP. Love ya all, Margo,

MUSIC A HUGE PROBLEM? Wow! You use such strong adjectives to describe people who post their views, words such as “attacked” and “ganging up” on the person who has a complaint about neighbor and their music. I read the post as did many others, I’m sure, and there was no such thing. You may not like or agree with the suggestions given, but that does not add up to ganging up on or attacking someone. It was just practical advice. It’s clear to see how someone’s playing music can become so distorted. I think the complaining neighbor has more problems than just the neighbor’s music playing. They seem to have such distaste for them it’s a shame. How sad. With all the woes in the world, it’s a pity to make such a big thing over music. How long has this been going on that, all of a

sudden, it is a huge problem? MUSIC TROUBLE So sorry about neighbor being bothered by loud music. How long have you been suffering? Are you the only neighbor having a problem with loud music so loud that it rattles your house? Maybe you should try to nicely explain to your neighbor how bothersome the music is to you? Have you given that a thought? Maybe do it over a cup of coffee? That always brings the tension down, just a few suggestions. Also, ear plugs can help somewhat. There are codes where you can’t play music late at night or too early in the morning. Don’t know if that is when the music is being played. It’s always good to get along with neighbors. Hopefully, you can get some much-needed relief. Kindness does go a long way. I have been blessed with

neighbors who are kind and considerate. RESPECT OTHERS WITH MUSIC The nature of character is not based on self-entitlement but of respect for other’s right to peace and quiet. This must be a consideration, especially when residing in close communities or apartment complexes. We should not have to suffer through someone else’s loud music or faulty exhaust systems, etc. Also, taste in music is variable. One person’s treasure is another person’s torment. Peace and quiet is not trivial. It is of precious value. Remember the quiet individual doesn’t annoy the loud one; it’s vice versa. So, who should move? MUSIC & GETTING ALONG If you live in an apartment complex and a neighbor is blaring their music, then you

Bobby, Jessica, Anthony Emme and GG MY HEARTFELT THANKS I want to publicly thank the concerned motorist in the gray pickup truck who encountered me on North Main Street in the early morning hours on Monday, September 21st. He had purchased for me a reflective vest to wear as I exercise on the street’s shoulder. I was not aware that I was difficult to see since I wear a light-colored jacket and thought it was visible when headlights struck it. Thank you for your kindness and your personal concern for my safety. I was surprised and do feel safer wearing it!

should speak to management about it. It’s a different story if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of space in between homes and properties. Everyone has the right to enjoy their life, but unfortunately, we will not find a place where there is total peace and quiet. The bigger picture is getting along with one another, especially your neighbors. I know of someone who has a neighbor who does nothing but curse, I would take music, any day, over that.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

Ray of Light Clothing Closet Supports Foster Families BY AMANDA DUDEK

S

everal families open their homes to children in need, fostering them while they can no longer live with their parents or legal guardians. Sadly, these children typically arrive with a garbage bag filled with the things they were able to grab quickly before leaving their homes. These children entering foster care are often in need of clothing and other essential items, and Melissa Siena, along with her husband and their church community, are doing something about it. “I have always had a heart for foster care, but my husband and I are not in a position to foster,” said Melissa Siena of Spencerport. “We still want to support those who are fostering, however, so we decided to start a clothing closet for foster families.” She named this closet Ray of Light. Since February, Ray of Light has been collecting new and gently used clothing and storing them at Anchor Christian Church in Chili. The process is straightforward. When a foster family in need contacts Siena, she goes to the church building and gathers available necessities for that child. “I gather two to three sets of clothing, diapers, books, journals, stuffed animals, and anything else they could need for the first few days,” she explained. “I make sure to include a nightlight or flashlight whenever possible because often, foster kids are terrified at night. I hope these things help them adapt to their new situation and to hopefully put some of the trauma they have endured behind them.”

garbage bag with whatever the child was able to grab quickly. So, we are working to pack items into nicer bags and backpacks that the kids can keep.” Changes in New York’s foster care system now mean that foster families are not able to receive funds to care for the children they take in right away, according to one of Siena’s friends who fosters. “You do not want to have to take a foster child to the store to pick out clothing,” observed Siena, noting the child’s potential Melissa Siena, founder of Ray of Light, embarrassment. “Also, the state has a clothing closet for foster families stopped handling the stipend the way they were before, so our care packages help fill in the gap.” So far, most donations to Ray of Light have come from Siena’s fellow church members. “They have responded really well, and our closet is almost completely stocked,” shared Siena. “We would like to have at least three outfits in each size. With about 40 sizes between Newborn and Adult Small, we currently have more than 80 outfits on hand.” Siena also thanked Greece Family Dentistry and Implantology for donating toothbrushes for kids to be provided to these foster families. As the school year gets underway, Ray of Light hopes its supply continues to match demand. “We started collecting clothing in February just before the shutdown,” Siena said. “As the school year kicks off, we are sadly anticipating that more children may come into care. It is so unfortunate knowing these children will likely have been stuck in these situations for the past six months.” With only two other Rochester area clothing closets devoted to foster families, Siena hopes to get the word out to foster families in the greater community that Ray of Light is there and ready to support them. “Not only do we have clothing and other items ready for them, but we also have a prayer team which prays for each child in need,” shared Siena. “We are ready to help these children and their foster families in any way we can.”

Ray of Light brings necessities - like this bag packed for a 7-year-old boy - to children in need who are entering foster care.

Siena has seen the effects of this trauma firsthand. “I lost my best friend almost three years again,” she confided, the pain still evident in her voice. “I was driving to pick her up and take her to a rehab, but before I could get to her, she was gone.” Her friend was mom to two stepdaughters who were able to stop going in and out of the foster care system once she was in their lives. “She had a heart for her girls and was able to raise them,” said Siena. “I wanted to honor her in a way that would be very special to her,” said Siena. “I prayed about it, and I felt led to start Ray of Light; Ray was my friend’s middle name. This is very personal.” Siena’s knowledge of and sensitivity to the challenges children entering foster care face is evident in her efforts through Ray of Light. “We pack bags for these children in need,” she said. “Typically, they do not have backpacks or luggage, and the social worker usually has filled a

We Care About ut

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

SEEKING A PERFECT SMILE?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diabetes Not Limited to Only 2 Main Types --DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, at 57, I was diagnosed with Type 1 LADA diabetes. Initially I was put on insulin to get my blood sugar within the normal range. Then I was just on metformin until the “honeymoon period” was over. My endocrinologist is great. I now am back on insulin (six units at night). I walk anywhere between 3 and 8 miles about three times a day. My blood pressure is excellent. I initially lost about 18 pounds after diagnosis, so my weight is good. When looking at Google, it says my life expectancy has been cut by 20 years! Yikes, I JUST retired and if I go by their gauge, I’ll be passing around age 68! Is this based on someone who has had diabetes for many years, since Type 1 is usually diagnosed much earlier? The doctor said even though my initial sugars were over 500 when diagnosed, I was very healthy and that’s why nothing was “destroyed.” My vision was off for about a month but no permanent damage was done. Any reassurance would be appreciated! -- M.W. ANSWER: Most people are familiar with Type 1 diabetes, with a typical onset in childhood and at a normal weight. It is caused by an autoimmune destruction of the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. People also know about Type 2 diabetes, usually adultonset and usually diagnosed in someone who’s overweight; it’s caused by resistance to insulin. But there are other subtypes of diabetes, including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In the U.S. and Canada, it accounts for a small fraction of diabetes cases, but is more common in Scandinavian countries. It has some characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but the autoimmune nature and the usual progression to insulin need makes most experts feel it is closer to Type 1 than to Type 2. A recent paper has outlined a potential new classification of diabetes types. The change in life expectancy from diabetes relates to how long you have had diabetes and how well-controlled it has been. With outstanding diabetes control (normal or near-normal blood sugar levels), the effect on overall mortality is modest, at best. In one model, the reduction in life expectancy is less than a year. However, it certainly is possible to have life expectancy drop by 20 years with very poorly controlled, longstanding diabetes. For people with diabetes, to a very large extent, their potential to live longer (and healthier) can be improved by better blood sugar control. For new-onset autoimmune diabetes (both Type 1 and LADA), early and aggressive blood sugar control with insulin may reduce the amount of autoimmune damage and improve long-term prognosis. Studies are in progress to evaluate this. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Although pearly white, straight, even teeth may be the intended goal, they are not always attainable with the use of whiteners and fillers. Dental veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or resin-composite, which are permanently bonded to the front of existing teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can also solve the issue of chipped or broken teeth as they can be attached to numerous or individual teeth as needed. Preparation for traditional veneers involves grinding down some of the tooth’s structure. No-prep veneers require minimal alterations to the patient’s natural teeth and are considerably less expensive; however, they only last about half as long (5-7 years vs. 10-15 years) as their traditional counterpart. We hope you won’t allow underdeveloped, chipped, discolored,

stained, or otherwise less than perfect teeth to keep you from smiling. There are many ways your dentist can use cosmetic dentistry to turn your smile into one you’ll be proud to show. For veneers, recontouring and shaping, bonding, and the other innovative cosmetic avenues toward a happier smile, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment at 585.343.4246. We provide complete, state-of-the-art oral care in a friendly, relaxing environment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. While there are no restrictions on foods that can be eaten after getting veneers, it is advisable to avoid actions like opening packages with your teeth and chewing on hard objects including ice.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

Take natural supplements. A study published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy found participants who used tablets of the herb butterbar showed significant allergy relief after only one week. Select herbs from reputable manufacturers who certify them.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY (NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time.

Great Rates on residential, commercial and industrial tool and equipment rentals

The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent).

There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

TREE SERVICES

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Long-Distance Move With Cats in Pickup DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have three rescue cats. They’re the only family I’ve got. I’m planning to relocate to a rural area that is several days’ drive away. I’ll be driving a pickup truck. I feel that making my cats travel with me wouldn’t be humane. Is there an agency available that could humanely and safely transport my cats? -Karl in Avon, New York DEAR KARL: I can totally relate! Years ago, I moved across the country with a very nervous cat in a carrier next to me on the bench seat of my pickup truck. Even though I made sure he had water, food and anxiety meds prescribed by the veterinarian, it was a stressful trip for him, and he did not eat or even poop for the whole two-day trip. Once I reached our new home, he returned to his usual snuggly self. Traveling with all three cats is possible with planning and may be the least stressful option for them. If you have an extended-cab pickup, make room in the back seat for three cat carriers. Put a litter pan on the floor and cover with plastic wrap while traveling; at rest stops, open one carrier at a time and let one cat out to use the litter pan and to snuggle with you (don’t open the vehicle doors while you do this). Look for pet-friendly hotels that will let you keep the cats in the room. Airline cargo transport can quickly transport pets across long distances. But there is a risk of death for pets traveling in airline cargo. Another option is private pet transport. If you choose this service, make sure they are insured and bonded, and that they will stay in contact with you throughout the trip.

OTHER DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
