DID YOU KNOW ? Before saying “ so long” to yard w ork at the end of autumn, homeow ners should remove thatch from their law ns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellow ish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the law n over the w inter, can block air and moisture from making its w ay into the soil. That can make it difficult for a law n to recover come the spring and may even c ost homeow ners a substantial amount of money to address w hen w inter finally skips tow n. W hen removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake w ith lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the law n. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes w ith the rake, as this w ill collect the thatch w ithout damaging the law n. M any people rent a dethatcher from a nearby law n and garden supply store, and suc h a devic e c an make the process of removing thatch much easier. How ever, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your law n, as there is no w ay of telling w hat c ondition the previous renter’s law n w as in w hen heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s law n onto your ow n, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring w hen your law n is looking to rebound. If seeding the law n in early fall, w hich can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying dow n any new seed. If you w ait to remove thatch until after you have laid dow n new seed, then the law n likely w on’t benefit from the seed and you w ill likely just rake the new seed aw ay w hen it comes time to remove thatch.

Oversight To the lady at the garage sale in LeRoy on Saturday, Oct. 7 - I have your overpayment. Please stop by and get it or you can contact the Penny Saver. Spooky and Fun! This year’s display of scarecrows on Main Street in Victor are very creative- well done!! What a difference! A Childcare Center in my town recently updated the exterior of its building and grounds. Its colors went from dark and dreary to bright and cheerful. It’s not only an improvement for the business, it’s a bright spot in our downtown that makes me smile every time I drive by! Small Town Happiness Fall in our small towns is one of my favorite times. Between the decorations, scarecrow contests, mums and pumpkins there is so much to make you enjoy the season!

SHARE WITH US Nothing better to do? There seems to be a lot of issues with you and your friend. We have been seeing you and friends driving around and screaming profanity and flipping us off. You may think this is funny. You and your friend are grown up. If you are caught by police you will have to pay the consequences. We the people of these places (you know where) are tired. Our recommendation is to grow up and stop. Good luck, Concerned Citizens. Move over 99% percent of drivers move over a bit when someone is getting their mail. Unfortunately, there’s always that one who can’t be courteous enough and comes within 1 or 2 feet. Why can’t you move over? It’s a country road for crying out loud! You come over a blind hill going way too fast. One slip and you’re dead. Bet you’d complain your car got damaged.

Is That Special Diet Killing Your Dog? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc. Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

HLOM Java with Joe E.: Tyler Angora, “Victorian Era Mourning”- Thursday, October 26 at 9am. “Mourning during the Victorian era (1855-1925) was a tradition that faded into the void following the end of the period. Mourning became a mainstream societal measure for almost everyone that lost a loved one. Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

Plan a day t o shop local f airs, shops & st ands Food finds: As plants are harvested, many items are turned into delicious treats. No autumn shopping excursion is complete until you smell a freshbaked apple pie or some apple cider doughnuts. Corn breads and fritters, cranberry snacks and w ines from nearby w ineries also are easy to find in autumn. These items make w elcome additions to your ow n pantry, or bring a freshly made treat to a friend or family member’s home w hen paying a visit. Also, don’t miss the food-related festivals that pop up on community calendars in the fall. From garlic to potatoes to pumpkins to cheeses, many seasonal items are on display. You also can sample these foods in interesting applications and make a day of gathering recipes and supplies to enjoy later.
to walk up 75 to 90 flights of steps several days a week as exercise. After a steering wheel airbag went off and damaged my heart, I am afraid my ability to do that stopped. After years of medication, I am now on a pacemaker, which definitely helps. Could the exercise have weakened my heart to such a degree that it could be viewed as overdoing it, therefore exacerbating my condition? -- Anon. ANSWER: In general, exercise does not harm the heart. On the contrary, exercise is almost always good for the heart. However, there are exceptions. In healthy people, there is an optimal amount of exercise, and extreme levels of exercise (on the order of running more than 10 miles a day every day) begin to decrease the benefit that a person gets from exercise. (This remains controversial, but I am convinced from the data.) In people with severe heart disease (the kind with blockages in the arteries), overdoing exercise can lead to a heart attack, but this is an exception. For every person who gets harmed by overexercising, there must be a hundred who don’t get adequate exercise. The fact that you have improved a lot on the pacemaker suggests that at least part of your problem wasn’t with the pump function of your heart, nor with the arteries leading to your heart. The problem lies with the electrical supply. Once a pacemaker is in, that problem is immediately alleviated, but the heart may still be deconditioned (“out of shape”). Regular exercise will help the problem. Your cardiologist can better answer the question for you and also give you advice on how to build up your exercise tolerance over time. ***

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Bob Herson: Master of Flies and Streams A Lifelong Journey in Fishing BY SUZIE WELLS
F
or Bob Herson, fishing is more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life. He says he tries to fish just about every day of the year, and loves having Caledonia’s Spring Creek in his literal backyard. He passes on his knowledge and expertise to both novice anglers and seasoned fishermen. Growing up as the only boy in a household with six sisters, Bob recognized the need for his own space and escape. He found that escape in fishing. His Long Island family was not interested in fishing, and his dad wasn’t really an outdoorsman. Bob’s Kindergarten teacher, however, piqued the boy’s interest when he read stories about fishing. Bob says he vividly remembers that day sitting on the rug around the teacher’s chair as he read the stories. A sister took Bob fishing and his interest grew. By 12, his passion ignited, he had his first official lessons in the Catskills. With his first fly tying kit, Bob started tying flies for other people by the age of 14. He notes that he selected his college, the University of Oregon, based on its proximity to nearby streams. He jokes that he tied flies for beer money in college and has since found quite the side job in fly tying for individuals and wholesale business. Now, Bob ties flies 3-4 hours/day even with a full-time job as a family therapist working with high-risk families. He finds it and fishing to be quite therapeutic after his workdays. He says “I have a crazy job where I see some really bad things, sad things, so fishing is the best way to clear my head. Being out in nature is great.” Bob runs a retail business, selling a few flies at a time to individual customers, and a wholesale business, making and selling hundreds and thousands of flies for customers, including for Dette Flies shop in the Catskills, where Bob says he learned a lot from Mary Dette. He says, “there was maybe half a day three years ago I had no flies to tie.”
Trout from Spring Creek, Caledonia
Bob also collects bamboo fly rods and fishing books, amassing probably a thousand books on the subject, he says. Bob’s fly patterns are featured heavily in Mike Valla’s 2023 book, Fly Fishing Guide to New York State. Amidst his entrepreneurial endeavors and his dedication to the craft, Bob remains grounded in the camaraderie that fishing has afforded him. He cherishes the friendships forged through his artful fly creations, relishing the occasional solitary expedition or the company of a close confidante. Oatka Creek and Spring Brook hold a special place in his heart, though the latter languishes in disrepair, a fact that troubles Bob deeply. Once a thriving hub of angling activity, Spring Brook’s decline can be traced back to an avian incursion that decimated its fish population, resulting in a marked decline in angler visits. Bob advocates for the concerted efforts of the Caledonia and Mumford communities, urging them to focus on stream restoration, with dam removal as a pivotal step forward. Bob advises budding anglers to start with spin fishing to grasp essential techniques before delving into the complexities of fly fishing. Bob acknowledges the perceived elitism sometimes in the fly-fishing community and encourages a more accessible entry point. Bob finds solace and clarity in the solitude of fishing. In a profession that often exposes him to the depths of human struggles, the act of casting a line becomes a form of therapy. Nature, for Bob, is a healing force. Bob says one of the most underrated places to fish is Genesee Country Village & Museum, where he says fishing is great in the springtime. “It’s gorgeous and worth it,” he says. Bob is thankful for that pivotal day in Kindergarten when the teacher spun the fishing stories that ignited Bob’s passion. “If I didn’t experience that, I’d probably not be fishing,” he says.

Breast Cancer
FAQ The World Health Organization reports that roughly 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. By the end of that year, there were nearly eight million women alive who had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous half decade. A breast cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to questions about the disease. The bulk of those questions undoubtedly are asked by the millions of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. But millions more individuals, including friends and family members of recently diagnosed women, may have their own questions. Women can discuss the specifics of their diagnosis with their physicians. In the meantime, the following are some frequently asked questions and answers that can help anyone better understand this potentially deadly disease.
What is breast cancer? Cancer is a disease marked by the abnormal growth of cells that invade healthy cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of the disease that begins in the cells of the breast. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) notes that the cancer can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body.
Can exercise help to reduce my breast cancer risk? The NBCF notes that exercise strengthens the immune system and women who commit to as little as three hours of physical activity per week can begin to reduce their risk for breast cancer. However, even routine exercise does not completely eliminate a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Is there a link between diet and breast cancer?
Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer? The NBCF reports that women who have been using birth control pills for more than five years are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. However, the organization notes that risk is very small because modern birth control pills contain low amounts of hormones.
Can breastfeeding reduce breast cancer risk? Breastfeeding and breast cancer are linked, though the NBCF notes that the role breastfeeding plays in lowering cancer risk depends on how long a woman breastfeeds. The World Cancer Research Fund International notes that evidence indicates that the greater number of months women continue breastfeeding, the greater the protection they have against breast cancer.
Is there a connection between stress & breast cancer? The NBCF notes that researchers have found that traumatic events and losses can alter how the immune system functions, which can provide an opportunity for cancer cells to establish themselves within a person’s body. The NBCF urges women to identify ways to keep their stress levels in check. Breast cancer education can be a valuable asset as women seek to reduce their risk for the disease.
The organization Susan G. Komen®, a nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, reports that studies have shown eating fruits and vegetables may be linked to a lower risk for breast cancer, while consuming alcohol is linked to an increased risk for the disease. In addition, the NBCF reports that a high-fat diet increases breast cancer risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

HOMETOWN
4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year.
2.
3.
Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.
4.
1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s a tip • If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. They work to grip both the lid and the jar. They work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist. -- D.Y. in Pennsylvania • Save your old tissue boxes. They can be used to store plastic grocery store bags for easy use. They can then be stacked up and stored orderly. RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Estrogen is a hormone made by the body. It helps the body develop and maintain female sex characteristics. Being exposed to estrogen over a long time may increase the risk of breast cancer. Estrogen levels are highest during the years a woman is menstruating. A woman’s exposure to estrogen is increased in the following ways: • Early menstruation: Beginning to have menstrual periods at age 11 or younger increases the number of years the breast tissue is exposed to estrogen. • Starting menopause at a later age: The more years a woman menstruates, the longer her breast tissue is exposed to estrogen. • Older age at first birth or never having given birth: Because estrogen levels are lower during pregnancy, breast tissue is exposed to more estrogen in women who become pregnant for the first time after age 35 or who never become pregnant. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In regard to your recent article on a cat’s constant vomiting: I had the same issue with my cat. Stella was vomiting once or twice a day for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out why; there was no issue with new rugs or furniture. When they sprayed the lawns in our complex, I made sure not to track anything into the house. And Stella was an indoor cat, so she wasn’t being exposed to other cats. I got her in to see her vet, who ran tests and blood work and found nothing seriously wrong. The vet said that Stella might have GERD (acid reflux), and to give her one-quarter of a 10 mg famotidine pill each day. I cut each pill into fourths and give it to her in the morning with a little treat. It works perfectly; Stella no longer vomits repeatedly and has been doing well for the past two years. She gets a check-up every year at the vet and comes through with flying colors. Perhaps the owner could run this possibility by her vet and see what they think! -- Sande G., Webster, New York DEAR SANDE: That is certainly a possibility! Readers, be sure to check in with the veterinarian if your cat suffers from symptoms such as vomiting frequently or signs of distress after eating like excessive meowing or howling. Acid reflux is one possibility, but as Sande noted, it’s important to rule out more serious conditions. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the vet’s office. Over-the-counter medications are a possibility, but keep in mind that formulations for humans contain larger dosages than a cat needs and may contain ingredients that are not great for your pets. The vet can advise you best. Does your cat take over-the-counter instead of prescription medications? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
