PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Body & Mind ____________________18
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

SAFETY FIRST WHEN DRIVING WITH PETS Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

Readers Sound Off on Letting Cats Outside
1-800-724-8747 www.grouptoursinc.com
DEAR READERS: My recent letter from a pet mom who strongly believes cats should be allowed outside really touched a nerve among readers. They sent in some great responses, both for and against. Only a few are published here due to space constraints, but you can read all of them, unedited, at www. pawscorner.com. Here are just a few:
KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Place the tree away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.
DEAR PAWS: I do not have a cat, but I would keep them indoors because of the dangers from and to them. And I do not let my dog run free either. -- Mary Ann C. DEAR PAWS: My current cat thrives on being outdoors, and she loves coming in and being a lap cat, too. I never let my cat stay outside all night, however; definitely more dangers then. -- Carol T., Leicester, New York DEAR PAWS: I think a person who lets any of their pets roam freely outside is uncaring, selfish and inconsiderate. A dictionary says this of a pet: “any domesticated or tame animal that is kept as a companion and cared for affectionately.” -Signed, I love my pet DEAR PAWS: Our pet cats still have an instinct to kill and be wild and free, just like big cats have. About the ticks: Just pull them off, put a little medicine on the bite, and that is that. -- Adrian M. DEAR PAWS: I agree with you. I lost two inside/outside cats when living in Florida. One got killed in the road; one got killed by a neighbor’s dog. After that I kept cats inside. -- Linda K. DEAR PAWS: I just can’t understand someone saying they “love having a cat,” but they certainly don’t seem to love the mess they leave in everyone else’s yards! -- Becky H. What are your thoughts on the issue? Send them, or any pet care questions, to ask@pawscorner.com.

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Happy 3rd Birthday Gunnar Nash
Happy 2nd Birthday Killian Donald
Love, Your family
Love, Papa and Grandma
Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

S E V RA Good Samaritans I wish to give a huge thank you to two good Samaritans who helped retrieve my Golden Retriever on Friday, October 22nd, who was going back and forth in the middle of Main Street in Springwater. I am very grateful also to all of the traffic which stopped from both directions and showed such patience until my beloved pet was safe. It was just a clear reminder that there are a lot of wonderful, caring people in the world! - Truly grateful, Carol R. Rochester Philharmonic What a treat to listen to the RPO this past Saturday as they performed the score of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. And to watch the movie on the big screen as the music was played live was a great experience. The shower scene was especially hair-raising! We're so lucky to have such talent in our area!
Better spent I love football, but the owners of the Buffalo Bills are working on a plan to build a new stadium at the cost of over 1 billion dollars. To do this, they are asking taxpayers to help pay the bill. Then we have multi-millionaires paying even wealthier multi-billionaires for a 10 minute thrill ride into space. My question is this: what has happened to our humanity? What has happened to our value system? Each night on the news, we are witness to poverty and famine beyond belief in many countries - not to mention our own. Let’s re-evaluate our priorities. How many starving children could we feed and provide medical care for with the money spent on frivolity? What an idiot! Joe Manchin is holding this country hostage because of his personal interests in coal mining! The President of the United States went to Glasgow for the all-important COP26 meeting without a legislative commitment thanks to Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia! The earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in, especially for our children. Manchin should be the first senator impeached! Boo to you! I would like to say to the person who stole part of my trailer hitch in the [local town] area, you must have some guts. As you were stealing my trailer hitch, you must have seen my license plate that says “Disabled Veteran.” This was a very costly hitch. I hope you are proud of yourself. I use this hitch for hauling dirt and other things for our home. That is why it is a tri-ball hitch. I hope you feel good about yourself.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Social Security Gets Big Benefits Bump The news is in. Our Social Security benefit for 2022 will increase by 5.9%, slightly less than the 6.1% estimate the government put out this summer. Still, that’s much greater than the 1.3% increase we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. The average monthly dollar increase will be $92, making the average benefit $1,657 per month for a single person. For a couple, a $154 increase would come to $2,753 per month. The official mail on the cost-of-living adjustment will come out in December. I’ve done my calculations for next year, and once again I shake my head. We’ve been notified already that I’ll have a rent increase. Heating fuel is likely to go up 47%. We all know what has happened at the grocery store. Medicare Part B is sure to go up, maybe a $10 per month increase. There is one worrying note, and we need to think about how it will play out for us individually. The question is: Will that increase move us into a higher tax bracket? It depends on our provisional income. That number is any income (pension, wages, dividends and more) not from Social Security, plus half the amount of Social Security. Those of us who come in under $25,000 won’t have a federal tax put on our Social Security. If that number is between $25,000 and $34,000, there will be a tax on half of our Social Security income. Over that and it goes up to a tax on 85% of our Social Security income. If your situation for 2022 is likely to put you in the category of having to pay taxes on your Social Security benefit, you can elect to have them take money out of your check each month. If you want to learn about that, call the IRS at 1-800-772-1213 and ask for IRS Form W-4V. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti-oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation. ~ Deepak Chopra

BOLD COLORS ADD VITALITY TO HOMES Colors on opposite ends of the color wheel will always complement each other. Green paired with pink (a lighter shade of green’s opposite, red) calls to mind the great outdoors. These hues can add a touch of floral spring sunshine even when that season has long since passed. Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES As the days become shorter and the weather cools down, a new crop of allergy symptoms can arise, turning the autumn season into one marked by sneezing, scratchy throats and itchy eyes. Medications can alleviate such symptoms, but allergy sufferers may want to investigate some natural ways to beat allergies. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, ragweed is one of the more common triggers of autumnal allergies. Ragweed contributes to “hay fever,” which is a term to describe allergic rhinitis that occurs as a symptom of ragweed pollen in the air. Ragweed releases pollen in mid-August, and it can continue to be problematic until a deep freeze arrives. Other sources of fall allergies include leaf mold and pollen that is present on fallen leaves. This gets circulated when people begin to rake or blow fallen leaves. Classroom pets and chalk dust in schools (although chalkboards are largely a thing of the past) are other autumn allergens. The good news is that many natural remedies work just as effectively as over-the-counter medications in regard to combatting ragweed and pollen problems.
Q
. Does medical marijuana help reduce Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms? My husband is a proud Army vet who served two tours in Vietnam and is now 50% service connected for combat PTSD. He retired two years ago, and since that time, he seems to have changed. He has nightmares more frequently, rarely goes out in public, and is on edge most of the time. Recently a fellow Vet recommended my husband try medical marijuana for his PTSD symptoms. We have talked about this treatment and would like to see if it helps, but it is not available through the VA. Now I am worried and have so many questions. Should I support my husband’s desire to try medical marijuana for his PTSD? Is it safe, and if so, why is it not available through the VA?
A
.
Please thank your husband for his service. Unfortunately, PTSD is a very common disorder experienced by Veterans who have been in combat. It is also experienced by many other persons who have undergone or witnessed a terrifying event. Common symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts

about the traumatic event. Some people even experience suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Medical marijuana is a safe treatment for PTSD. Research studies with medical marijuana have demonstrated its effectiveness in managing PTSD symptoms. New York State has approved medical marijuana for the treatment of PTSD. The Veterans Administration is part of the Federal Government, which does not recognize medical marijuana use. I have extensive experience working with Genesee and Wyoming County NY Veterans, as well as certifying patients for medical marijuana, so I understand the value of this additional treatment for PTSD. I look forward to working with you and your husband to address your valid concerns and to helping your husband receive a NYS Medical Marijuana card. COPD Lung Function Can’t be Restored ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column on pulmonary fibrosis. I especially appreciate knowing that there are medications known to slow the progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and reduce mortality. With a 20-year-old diagnosis of COPD and having been prescribed medications to reduce exacerbations, you might imagine my interest in your article. I’m wondering how pulmonary fibrosis differs from COPD and if the two medications that you mention (pirfenidone and nintedanib) might be helpful in slowing the progression of lung disease in patients such as myself. Have any studies been completed using these medications on patients with COPD? -- S.A. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- its two main forms are emphysema and chronic bronchitis -- usually, but not invariably, is a result of long-term exposure to lung toxins, especially smoke. In the most common case of COPD, due to cigarette smoking (at least, that’s the most common in North America and Europe: cooking fires are still a common cause in less developed countries), stopping the exposure will dramatically slow down further damage. Unfortunately, there are no established treatments that can restore lung function in people with moderate to advanced COPD. Pulmonary fibrosis is, by contrast, a rare disease; about 30,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year (compare that with the 9 million people in the U.S. diagnosed with chronic bronchitis last year). The exact mechanism of action of pirfenidone and nintedanib is not known, but they are not thought to be effective in COPD. Surprisingly, I did not find a published trial looking at whether these drugs might be effective. The need for new therapies to treat COPD is so great that I would have thought some researcher might have tried it, despite the long odds.

ARE REGULAR DENTAL VISITS REALLY NECESSARY? The adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” can refer to the importance of regular dental visits. Dental professionals can screen for mouth, head, and neck cancers, easily treatable if caught in the early stages; dental hygienists focus on preventive dental health and treating gum disease. Dentists are also able to advise on options when it comes to tooth whitening, since dental offices are the only places one should get teeth professionally whitened. Routine visits also help in identifying the onset of gum disease and dental decay and other potential problems. It is important to be proactive. Seeing a dentist regularly can pinpoint any irregularities before issues become problematic and costly. As part of your healthcare team, we are concerned about all aspects of your
health. If a medical condition comes to our attention during a dental exam, you can be sure we will discuss the issues with you as well as any other healthcare provider if you choose. We bring you our dental column as a way to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of professional dentistry. For gentle dental care for the family, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we’ll give you a reason to smile! P. S. Like humans, giraffes also have 32 teeth, but most of them are positioned in the back of their mouths, which is why giraffes don’t have pearly white smiles!

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Exercise in the great outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts can reduce their energy consumption by exercising outdoors whenever possible. Replace running in place on a treadmill with running through a park or on a beach outside. Men and women who work out in their homes can take the free weights outdoors to the backyard on nice days, allowing Mother Nature instead of the electric company to supply the lighting.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Furniture or “yard sale finds”: These can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

GENESEE-ORLEANS MINISTRY OF CONCERN INC.: HELPING TO BUILD A STRONGER COMMUNITY by Gretta Smith
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller
T
o have a thriving community, it is critical to support all community members. Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern, Inc., the agency of last resort, which has existed for over 50 years, strives to do just that. It is our mission to help individuals and families going through difficult times, not only with temporary assistance but also rehabilitation and support to get them to a point where they can once again lead a sustainable life on their own. We do this through many programs, including our furniture program, Christmas program, Just Friends Program, financial literacy classes, emergency shelter assistance, utility assistance, and day-to-day client advocacy. These services are made possible with support from our community: from you. This year we are running our annual Christmas Program which helps provide children with gifts for the holiday season. Last year, we were able to provide gifts to 279 children! The amount of donations we received was truly inspiring and admirable. This program helps relieve parents of the stress that can often come with the holiday season and allow children to wake up Christmas morning to presents under the tree. The gratitude from all our families last year was extremely touching, and our communities were able to make that happen. This year, families may fill out one Christmas Wish List per child with all ideas ranging from clothing and winter apparel (so they can build that snowman again this year) to bedsheets (to cozy up in as they wish for a snow day) to books and games (so they can travel in imaginary lands) and art supplies (to draw a land of their own)! Organizations and donors can either choose to adopt children specifically or donate items for our Christmas “Shop.” Our only request is that these be new items only and not electronics.

The families that are not adopted will be able to pick Organizations and doout presents for each of their nors can either choose to children. Depending on the adopt children specifinumber of donations we cally or donate items for receive, we estimate each our Christmas “Shop!” family will be able to choose 3-5 gifts per child. We also ask for donations of wrapping accessories including wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, and Christmas tags that we will be able to send home with the parents. If you would like to sign up for the Christmas Wish Lists, you may fill them out at Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern in Albion or (by appointment only) at Catholic Charities in Batavia. You may also call Gretta Smith at the Ministry of Concern at (585) 589-9210 to fill a Wish List out over the phone. Please reach out to Gretta if you would like to donate to this year’s program. Christmas Wish Lists are due by December 3rd and donations are due by December 8th at the Albion office. We were overwhelmed by the support last year and would truly appreciate continued support again this year. We could not do it without you. We could not do it “without community.” Furthermore, please keep in mind our furniture program if you know of anyone who is looking for a place to donate their gently used furniture. Our employees will pick up the furniture and deliver it to a family in need, hopefully on the same day, at no cost to either party. For a list of items we accept, contact us at our Albion office. In addition, if you or anyone you know is in need of any personal care items, furniture, bedding, kitchen appliances, or other household items, please reach out to our agency. For more information about our other programs or ways you can help, please visit our website ministryofconcern.org or call us at (585) 589-9210.

Add 1⁄3 cup cold water. In a large bowl, combine the cake mixes, egg substitute, food coloring, and salt. Add cocoa mixture, and whisk until smooth. Spread all of the pudding mixture over the cake layer. Evenly top with half of the strawberries. Continue layering with remaining cubed cake, Cool Whip and strawberries.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.
SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive. A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries.
Poll Ends 11-16-21 Poll Ends 11-09-21 Joseph Manchin III, (D - W. Va.), has continued to take issue with President Joe Biden’s economic package regarding its size and scope, notably opposing a $150 billion dollar program aimed at transitioning utilities from fossil fuels towards carbon-free sources of power. Should Manchin be expelled from his office as senator? 0% Absolutely! 17% No, but he needs to find a compromise quickly. 83% No way! We love hearing from you! The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it. Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options. The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. • More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels. Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item). Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. Sell your skills to yourself first before you share them with a boss. Make a list of why you deserve a raise and then back up those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your résumé.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * You can cut the bitterness in some varieties of greens by soaking them in ice water for roughly an hour before serving. Use a salad spinner to get all of the water off. * “Place an ice cube (or ice chips) in carpet divots left behind by furniture legs. This will help the fibers “plump up,” and the spot will disappear!” -- A.I. in Utah * Remove the annoying sticky residue from price tags with WD-40 or baby oil. This is for use on hard surfaces only. If you are unsure, test in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure the oil doesn’t leave a stain where the tag was. * “To help repel the dust on baseboards between cleanings, wipe with a used dryer sheet. To make this even easier, you can put the dryer sheet over a Swiffer-type floor cleaner. This way, you don’t even have to bend down.” -- M.E. in Alabama * Felt circles are great for putting under small appliances on the kitchen counter. They are easier to move around, and they won’t scratch the countertops. You can find them at the hardware store, or make your own by cutting out what you need from a piece of felt and attaching it to the bottom of your appliance with double-stick tape ... or even a drop of glue! * Running a washing machine that isn’t full not only wastes energy and water, it also wastes money because you’re paying to run more washes. Always fill the machine -- but remember not to overload it! This applies to your dishwasher, too.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
