EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Use fine china when serving meals. Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to serve meals on fine china and use the silverware that has gone unused instead of disposable plates and utensils. In addition to adding a touch of elegance to meals, reusable china and silverware is less wasteful than paper plates and plastic utensils. Cloth napkins and other table linens are also more eco-friendly than paper napkins.

Thank you, election workers! I want to thank all the election workers in Caledonia on 11/3/20 for their help in getting through the system quickly because I had had spinal surgery the week before. Although my husband and I had tried to vote early, those lines were too long. You workers in Caledonia were kind and most helpful, as is my husband, Morris! Thank you! Donna Mummery

A joy to see! Sincerest apology to “Trick or Treaters” that stopped at my house in Mumford. I forgot to close the door since I was not prepared. You were very nice and a real joy to see. Thank you for being of good cheer!

Embarrassed On an early voting day, as a [local town] resident, I was ashamed and embarrassed at the flower bed in front of the [local] center. Boards were broken in the flower bed; all in disarray. A couple from [local town] were behind me in line, and I was sad they had to see that. We are better than this; this is no way to represent our town!

absolutely loves her job, the work environment, and the people she works with. This week, she was shopping using the Instacart application. A customer thought she was on her personal cell phone, which looks like the device employees use to shop for customers to fill their phone orders. The customer yelled at our daughter, which was shocking and upsetting to our daughter. Although it was a good lesson for our daughter on how to manage unexpected circumstances, it would be helpful if people would take a few minutes to understand what is really going on before making judgments. We are disappointed by the rude customer but very proud of our daughter!

Hello, Congress! We the unfortunate working people need urgent retroactive stimulus checks. Rude customer Our 17-year-old daughter works for the greatest grocery store in the US: Wegmans. She’s worked there for almost two years,

Thank you! I had great difficulty locating a medical facility in Geneseo. Staff at a different facility tried to assist me but their directions were not complete enough. As a last resort I approached the Pharmacy Dept.

at Geneseo Wegmans. A woman there was gracious enough to attempt to help me but could not access the information needed on her computer. She arranged for me to be seated in the consultation area and located a gentleman to assist me. He proceeded to position the computer so we could both view the screen and then proceeded to bring up the area in question in living color! Having the directions so clearly depicted made it possible for me to keep the appointment for the procedure

needed to keep a doctor’s appointment. Avoiding another trip and having to reschedule my doctor’s appointment was a great help to me! Thanks to Wegmans Pharmacy from someone who is not a client of theirs!

Bad Driveway II I had my driveway replaced in July. Its course stones and different shades of black show very poorquality material and workmanship. I was told the owner would fill the holes and smooth the surface. After numerous, unanswered calls, I notified the BBB. I then received a call from the salesperson asking me to withdraw my complaint. They stated, ”We will come and make any necessary repairs within the month of October 2020. That is my word, and we will stand by our warranty that we provide here at [local company].” It is midNovember. I have not heard from them and do not expect to. Large stones are coming loose, and I am concerned about water damage this winter from continuous freezing and thawing.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Downgrading Cat’s Fresh Food Diet

--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was furloughed from my job in April and have been getting by on savings and an unemployment check. With no new job yet, I need to drastically cut back expenses to get through this winter. My cat “Silk” is 9 years old and eats a special diet of prescription canned food plus fresh pet food from the grocery. Will she stay healthy if I temporarily replace her diet with a commercial cat food? -- Henry in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR HENRY: Thank you for putting Silk first in your household budget, especially in these tough times! Give your cat’s veterinarian a call and discuss the situation. Would a four- to six-month break from prescription canned food be OK, and not threaten Silk’s health? The answer depends on the condition for which she’s eating special food. You can probably stop buying those prepackaged fresh pet foods for your cat, at least until you get financially back on track. Instead, prepare a few days’ worth of fresh cat food at home by steaming rice, peas and a protein like chicken or tuna until fully cooked (do not add spices or salt) and smashing together. Cool and store in the refrigerator. Fresh food needs to be supplemented with a formulated cat food so that Silk gets key nutrients during this time. The veterinarian should be able to recommend an off-the-shelf cat food, either dry or canned, that will meet her needs for a few months. If she is taking medications as well, don’t skimp on her medicines, and be sure to include them in your budgeting.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Nutrients: Humus is an organic component of soil that forms when leaves and other plant materials decompose. Organic mulches provide humus and decompose over time, adding nutrients into the soil. The Morton Arboretum recommends that homeowners use organic mulch that was composted or treated prior to application so any weeds, insects or microorganisms are killed.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well. Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall. Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles. Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

SCRAPE THAT BAD BREATH AWAY! Tongue scraping may sound a little unsettling, but it is an important step in obtaining a clean, healthy mouth. It is also one of the best ways to retain pleasant breath long after brushing. Your tongue may feel smooth most of the time, but it is actually covered in tiny bumps called “papillae” that are responsible for tasting and feeling the texture of your food. However, they can also harbor bad bacteria that result in sour breath, cavities, and gum disease, not to mention food debris and dead skin cells. Although brushing your tongue can help, using a specially designed tongue scrapper is much more effective at removing the bacteria and debris from your mouth, leaving it cleaner and fresher.

While oral bacteria can be your teeth’s worst enemy, routine tongue scraping, brushing, flossing, and professional dental checkups can be your body’s best friends. Has it been so long since your last dental visit that you can’t remember when it was? Then why not take charge of your dental health and call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment? You’ll find that nothing is more economical than regular professional attention to your oral hygiene. Call for an appointment at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Tongue scrappers are made from plastic, copper, or stainless steel.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small; 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans and sometimes an invasive procedure to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means your risk that this nodule is cancer is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancer is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You should also have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker and quitting remains the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 12

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Batavia Ophthalmology

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.

585-344-0933 NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Rinse off pollen. Use a mild cleanser to rinse the eyelids and eyelashes of pollen, as this is where it tends to congregate after being outdoors. Use saline spray to clear nasal passages of excess pollen as well.

Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest w hen the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely w on’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allow ing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

Buy a $25 Gift Card & Get a $5 Gift Card FREE! Must use Free $5 Gift Card in January, February or March 2021

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing.

Let us cater your Holiday Party!

By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Freedom of experimentation: Although chain restaurants may have to meet approval from administrative boards and marketing departments before they can introduce new fare, independently owned restaurants can let their diners decide which foods remain on the menu and even adapt to community trends. Local restaurants may take pride in serving cultural or regional foods.

Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

Virtual Schooling: It’s

all Routine

BY AMANDA DUDEK

S

chooling is different for students this fall thanks to hybrid and completely virtual learning. Many parents now find themselves on the front lines of the learning process: in their child’s classroom. If you find yourself concerned keeping up with your child’s classes and assignments, you are not alone. We reached out to teachers from across our readership area for their thoughts on hybrid and virtual schooling, keeping up with assignments to avoid falling behind, easing stress on your child, and how to best support him or her as well as sharing insider tips for virtual schooling success. Here are some of our takeaways. Encourage focus to close any gaps from last spring. While not all students experienced gaps, some patterns have emerged. “I cannot speak for all students, but I would say reading skills were affected,” said Aimee Schwenzer (4th Grade, Dansville). David Resseguie (ELA, Brockport) concurs. “I have definitely noticed lower levels of reading than in previous years,” he said. “Reading stimulates skill growth and the process of learning.” Teachers expected there would be some gaps, and Natalie Cottone (4th, Dansville) and Todd Putnam (ELA, Webster) compared the spring shutdown effect to that of a longer “summer slide.” Our Takeaway: Read, read, read... independently and together! Re-establish expectation of learning. “Students have had to relearn being a learner,” explained Schwenzer. Setting learning expectations may take a little longer this year. “Kids are struggling to get back into the routines we had when we were full time,” said Lisa Tubinis (8th Grade Science, Holley), citing fewer weekly days in the classroom. “Most students got out of routine, even of just getting up in the morning,” added Patricia McGrath (10th, 11th & 12th, Fairport) before adding a positive. “Students who were able to come in person have been so excited to be back. They appreciate being in school with teachers, staff, friends and connections.” Our Takeaway: Set clear learning expectations with your child. Avoid the procrastination snowball. Each subject, concept, and grade are spiraled, building upon each other. Missing critical class content creates gaps which, if unrecognized, can create major problems as students continue. Incomplete assignments can quickly add up, sinking a student’s grades. “If students leave all their assignments until Friday, they typically shut down,” explained Tubinis. Natalie concurs, adding that not keeping up frequently creates a “snowball effect,” making it difficult for a student to get caught up later. Importantly, students’ mindset may need to shift from spring to fall. “Things were up in the air in the spring,” Putnam recalled. “Now, this is part of their learning, not just review or trying something out. Missing assignments affect students grades wise, where it may not have as much last spring.” Our Takeaway: Complete classwork assignment by assignment, lesson by lesson, day by day. Establish a time and place to complete each week’s assignments. Routine: With so much learning currently taking place at home, children are expected to organize their work, have good time management, and schedule their weeks. “We are expecting kids to manage these things at a grown-up level,” Schwenzer observed. “It’s challenging.” Putnam agrees. “When I was 12, I would have been over my head,” he said. “A lot of these time management and planning skills come from experience over time.” Yu, Resseguie, and Jenna Murgillo (5th Grade) of Brockport remind us that young people thrive with routine and structure, encouraging parents to work with their children to create a schedule

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

and to post it where it’s very visible. Putnam adds that most children won’t have solid answers when it comes to time management, giving parents a great opportunity to step in and support them in creating a routine that works for them. Importantly, McGrath (l-r) David Ressiguie, reminds us that this is such a Jenna Murgillo, Randall Yu stressful time for kids, and giving them routines, structure, and expectations can help ease that stress while encouraging them to thrive. “Help them know what to expect in a time that is so unpredictable,” she advised. “Give yourself grace and forgive yourself if you make a mistake.” Our Takeaway: Aimee Create an effective weekly plan with your child. Schwenzer Environment: Create a quiet space with few distractions. “You know your child best,” said Schwenzer. “Modify and change the space so it’s more accessible to them. Limit distractions and distraction opportunities.” Putnam adds that a quiet space, without a TV and other electronics, would be ideal. Our Natalie Takeaway: Minimize both noise and distractions. Cottone Communication: This has been virtual learning’s bright spot. Yu, Resseguie and Murgillo have noted higher levels of parent communication as has Cottone. “Constant communication is so important right now,” she shared. “We are communicating almost in real time.” “This experience is helping our kids be tech savvy,” Lisa Tubinis added Schwenzer. Cottone agreed, adding, “The biggest difference between the spring and fall is the fact that students are much more computer savvy, and I am, too!” Yu, Resseguie and Murgillo concurred. “We should see a very tech savvy group coming through.” Tubinis encouraged parents to use the technology to make sure children are completing their remote Todd assignments. “Check their grades often,” she Putnam encouraged. “If you catch missing assignments as they happen, it will be much easier for your kids to make them up than at the 5 or 10 week mark.” Our Takeaway: Keep lines of communication open, check grades, and ask questions. As we navigate hybrid and virtual learning Patricia throughout the 2020-2021 school year, McGrath and McGrath Cottone remind us that this is just temporary. Tubinis echoed this, sharing, “We want kids to have a successful year. We are all working towards the same goal. None of us is alone.” ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Act Now to Change Your Medicare Plan

Have you finished making your decisions about your Medicare plan for 2021? If you’re going to make a change, you have only a short time to pick a new one. The deadline is Dec. 7. There are so many options: Medicare Advantage, a supplemental plan or the traditional Medicare. And there are many things to consider within those options -- the drugs we currently take, eye exams, hearing aids, annual preventive tests and more. The place to start is with your current plan. By now you should have received your Medicare Annual Notice of Change Letter if you have an Advantage or Part D plan. (You won’t get one for a Supplemental plan.) The letter will itemize any changes to your 2021 plan, including price. Compare your current plan with any changes in your plan for next year. Have your needs changed this year? Are there new drugs you’re taking? Is your doctor included in your network? What about the pharmacy you like to use? Are you likely to need a procedure in 2021? What else are you likely to need in the next year? Look at your Medicare & You 2021 book that came in the mail. Check inside the front cover for information on lowering insulin costs, acupuncture for back pain, telehealth visits and more. (If you can’t find your copy, go online to www.medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/10050-Medicare-and-You.pdf.) If you want to consider making a change, go online to Medicare.gov and look at plans for your area. For any changes to a supplemental plan, call that plan directly. Don’t try to do this all in one day. Give yourself time to consider what you need, and ask questions. Get personalized help at State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at www.shiptacenter.org if you need it. Click on SHIP Locator for listings by state, or call them at 877-839-2675.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.

The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.

GLOW/New York Recycles 2020 Enter to Win!!

NOW HERE'S A TIP Support GLOW/New York Recycles 2020. Be one of the first 60 residents to sign and return this pledge and receive a reusable ChicoBag®. Limit 1 per household.

By JoAnn Derson * This is a wonderful tip received via e-mail: If you have a panic button for your car alarm, keep your keys by the bedside. If you experience a problem during the night, trip the panic alarm. Let your trusted neighbors know about your intention, and they will be able to assist you. * “Great gravy is only a plastic bag away! This is my tip for separating the fat from pan drippings to make gravy. I take a quart-size plastic bag and set it in a glass measuring cup. Pour the pan drippings through a strainer, right into the bag. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and the fat will separate to the top. Seal the bag, and snip a small hole in a bottom corner, drain the liquid into a saucepan to make gravy. It’s that easy.” -- T.C. in Idaho

Mail to: Dear GLOW Committee: I (we) support recycling and recycled product procurement! Thanks for supporting it too! Please enter me (us) for the opportunity to win regional GLOW/New York Recycles prizes.* Name: ______________________________ Address: ____________________________

GLOW Region Solid Waste Management Committee Genesee Cty. Bldg. 2 3837 W. Main St. Rd. Batavia, NY 14020-9404 Email: glow@co.genesee.ny.us Ad partially funded by a NYSDEC MWR&R Grant

_____________________________________ Phone #: ____________________________ *No purchase necessary. Your name and address will be kept confidential.

* Whenever I am baking and the recipe calls for, say, 1 cup of honey (or some other sticky substance), I used to pour the honey into the measuring cup but then have a hard time getting all the honey back out of the cup and into the mixing bowl. Now I rinse the measuring cup with water right before measuring, or spray with nonstick cooking spray. It slides right out! * To create a self-watering area for potted plants while you are on vacation, set plants in the bathtub or in a kiddie pool and use a length of cotton rope to wick water from the bathtub to the plant’s roots. You can either stick it up the holes in the bottom of the pot or dig it down a few inches into the soil. This should get you by for a week or so. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Determine how much time you spend on common tasks. Take a day to calculate how much time you’re devoting to certain parts of your workday. For example, is email correspondence bogging you down for several hours?
