When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS Animal trainers can address any type of behavior. According to the Animal Behavior Institute, trainers who work with dogs, cats, parrots, or other companion animals must have a thorough and detailed knowledge of animal behavior. Pet owners who have successfully housebroken puppies in the past may think they can do it again with relative ease, but no two puppies are the same. Techniques that worked with one dog will not necessarily work with another. Trainers recognize this and have an array of techniques within their arsenal, making them capable of addressing and correcting any type of behavior.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.

Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

‘tis the season SERVE POTATO PANCAKES FOR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS Serves 12 3 large potatoes, peeled and shredded 1 small onion, shredded 3 large eggs 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, or as needed 1/2 cup vegetable oil Toppings: Sriracha sauce Vegan coconut yogurt
SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.
1. Place the potatoes and onion into a bowl, and stir in eggs, salt and flour as needed to make the mixture hold together. With wet hands, scoop up about 1/3 cup of the mixture per patty, and form into flat round or oval shapes. 2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it shimmers, and gently place the patties into the hot oil. Fry until the bottoms are golden brown and crisp, 5 to 8 minutes, then flip with a spatula and fry the other side until golden. 3. Line a colander or strainer with 2 paper towels, and drain the cooked latkes in the colander. Serve hot.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to ORANGE GALETTE WITH BEET GORGONZOLA SALAD Recipe courtesy of Momma Cuisine
nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.
Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 15-20 minutes Servings: 12 1 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s Sliced Pickled Beets nonstick cooking spray 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, approx. 16-by-11 inches 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 4 navel oranges, segmented 4 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola or other blue cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (opt’l) 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 2 cups mixed baby salad greens 1/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted if desired Heat oven to 400 F. Drain beets well; set aside on paper towels to absorb remaining liquid. Discard liquid or save for another use. Spray large sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray. Gently place puff pastry sheet on pan. With pastry brush, gently spread 1/2 tablespoon olive oil on pastry sheet. Place about half the orange segments in two rows on top of pastry sheet, leaving 1-inch margins on all sides. Fold edges of pastry sheet to create border. Sprinkle 2 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola over oranges. Sprinkle with salt, if desired, and basil. Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven; cool on wire rack. Coarsely chop beets. In large bowl, toss together remaining orange segments, salad greens and chopped beets. Drizzle with remaining olive oil; toss gently to combine. Cut cooked galette into 12 pieces. Top with beet salad. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and pecans. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE TRADING IN YOUR CAR Shop around for a deal. Trade-in values may not fluctuate wildly between dealerships, but they likely won’t be exactly the same, either. Patiently shopping around for the best deal for your trade-in can ensure you get the best deal possible. Request all trade-in offers be made in writing, and don’t hesitate to take one offer to other dealers to see if they will match or exceed a competitor’s offer. Don’t discount working with less traditional sellers, such as online dealerships like CarMax.

Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

Sometimes a root canal is not enough to save a tooth. Not all hope is lost, however, because an endodontic surgical procedure can help preserve a tooth after a root canal. Endodontic surgery can find small fractures and hidden canals that aren’t visible on X-rays. It can also be used to remove calcium deposits and treat damaged roots and the surrounding bone. An apicoectomy, or root-end resection, is the most common endodontic treatment. This procedure involves removing inflamed or infected tissue and the root end. You may receive a small filling and dissolving stitches. Local anesthetic is used, and advanced technologies like operating microscopes and digital imaging allow the procedure to be performed quickly and comfortably. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly,
to educate our patients to prevent future problems. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We offer complete general dental care, from cleanings to full mouth reconstruction to repair of any damage done by neglect or trauma. We also provide cosmetic dentistry here at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. Endodontic surgeries are usually performed in a dental clinic under local anesthetic. Most patients are able to drive themselves home and return to normal activities the next day.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Coincide With New Cramps ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula. ***
Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals. Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

COMMON INVESTMENT TERM TO KNOW DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.
Diversification: Diversification is a savvy investment strategy in which investors spread out their investments so their portfolio is as diverse as possible. When diversifying, investors may invest in stocks, bonds, IRAs, a 401(k), and other vehicles.

HELPING HEROES (NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities. “We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania. In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public. Learn More: The free Hero Care App helps members of the military and veteran communities access emergency and other Red Cross services anywhere in the world. Go to your app store or text GETHEROCARE to 90999 to download the app. For further facts, visit www.redcross.org. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Daena Ford: A 31-Year Journey with Braddock Bay Raptor Research BY SUZIE WELLS
F
or over three decades, Daena Ford has dedicated her life to the world of raptors through her involvement with Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBRR). From her early days as an intern to her current role as the organization’s president, Daena’s passion for these majestic birds has shaped her career, leading to significant contributions in education and conservation. Daena’s journey with BBRR began in 1992 when she joined as an intern during her junior year at SUNY Geneseo, where she studied biology. Intrigued by every aspect of BBRR, including hawkwatch, raptor banding, and education, Daena became hooked on the world of raptors. Over the years, she evolved from intern to BBRR’s education director, spearheading the acquisition of raptors for educational purposes, developing and implementing programs onsite and throughout the community. In pursuit of her passion, Daena returned to school, earning a teaching degree and secondary science education certification from Roberts Wesleyan University. She taught middle school science in Hilton for six years, continuing her volunteer involvement with BBRR. Since 2001, she has held leadership roles within the organization, currently serving as its president, overseeing all operations, including field research and education programs. Daena’s fascination with raptors goes beyond their beauty; she says she sees them as symbols of strength and grace, playing a crucial role as environmental barometers, “helping us keep tabs on the health of the ecosystems we share with them.” Raptors, with their “wow factor,” captivate people’s attention, offering a unique avenue for people to connect with nature. For her, raptor migration is a marvel, and witnessing the spectacle at Braddock Bay sparked a deep passion. She says, “Seeing hawks, sometimes hundreds or thousands at a time, swirling overhead as they pass you by is just amazing. Learning about where they travel, and how they survive these journeys has been fascinating, and there’s still more to be discovered.” In 2016, BBRR revived its education raptor program, and Daena played a pivotal role by building enclosures on her private property to house four education Photo credit: Diane W. Dersch raptors – a Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Broad-winged Hawk, and a Merlin. These birds, unable to survive in the wild due to injuries, now serve as ambassadors for their species, contributing to BBRR’s educational outreach. Over the past few years, Daena has conducted nearly 500 programs, reaching over 25,000 people across 12 different counties. From formal presentations in schools and Scout groups to participating in festivals, Daena and her team have covered extensive ground. Notably, her involvement in bringing education birds to the City of Rochester’s recreation centers underscores her commitment to broadening the reach of environmental education.
biggest migration days of over 40,000 raptors, seeing a rare Swainson’s Hawk banded at our station, and helping to fit a snowy owl with a transmitter. Above all, she says the best part of her work with BBRR out in the field with wild birds or working with the education raptors, is being able to share activities and birds with various audiences as well as watching students have their “first” moments during field trips, spotting their first bald eagle or first owl in the wild. Daena enjoys bringing the birds to schools and recreation centers in the city of Rochester, providing urban children the opportunity to experience wild animals in a unique way, and introducing them to species they could see on their own even in the city. Every year since 2017, Daena brings the birds to the 5th grade art classes at Manor Elementary School in Honeoye Falls. Students observe and sketch the birds and then fine tune their art pieces. Finished artwork by several students goes on display at BBRR’s annual Bird of Prey Days festival in the spring. Daena emphasizes the importance of raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. With some species facing population declines, she encourages people to take small steps, such as planting native plants, avoiding harmful pesticides, installing nest boxes for cavity nesters, and cleaning up trash, to support these essential predators. Increasing awareness is key to fostering a connection with the natural world. Daena’s life extends beyond her work with BBRR. As a former naturalist and conservation educator, her involvement in the Hawk Migration Association of North America and her passion for birding and hiking showcase a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. Her family, including her two children and beloved rescue dogs, adds another layer to her rich and fulfilling life. Daena Ford’s remarkable journey with Braddock Bay Raptor Research encapsulates a lifetime of dedication to raptors, education, and environmental conservation. Her tireless efforts have not only enriched the lives of those she encounters but have also left an indelible mark on the world of raptor research and education. As she continues to inspire and educate, Daena invites everyone to explore the wonders of nature and join the cause for raptor conservation. Check out Braddock Bay Raptor Research at www.bbrr.org and on FB and IG.
Daena says she has too many favorite memories to recount, including exciting encounters with wild raptors, such as finding her first ever Northern saw-whet owl in the wild, witnessing one of our

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

DID YOU KNOW? Firms on the lookout for ways to manage employees’ time more efficiently may want to reconsider their approach to meetings. A recent study on meetings commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that an overwhelming majority of professionals who are considered heavy meeting-goers admitted to an array of behaviors that suggest meetings aren’t as productive as employers may believe. Ninety-six percent of respondents admitted to having missed meetings in the past, while 91 percent acknowledged daydreaming during meetings. In addition, 73 percent of respondents did other work during a meeting, while 39 percent acknowledged falling asleep.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY (NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association.
