NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS (NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society.

Classifieds ____________________42 Employment ____________________38

Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.

Merry Christmas from Ruger and his little brother Remington!

Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.

Kidz Korner ____________________26

It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved.

Pet Place _____________________2 Puzzle Answers ____________________12

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.

Real Estate ____________________35 Sip & Dine _____________________6 Tis the Season ____________________21 Vibes & Rants ____________________16

Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025.

Worship ____________________32

“Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said. “How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved? “With this data in hand, our goal to save every savable pet by 2025 is finally within reach,” Castle said. COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19;

Puzzle Answers This Week We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

DRONE TERMINOLOGY

KEEP THAT SOCKET COVERED! Although there will likely be some discomfort involved in having a tooth removed, many people find relief from the pain of an infected or impacted tooth. However, if the pain becomes worse a few days after the extraction, you may be dealing with a relatively rare condition called “dry socket.” When a tooth is removed, it leaves a hole known as a socket, and in most cases that socket will be filled with a blood clot that covers the nerves to protect them until the gums heal. If that blood clot becomes dislodged, it leaves the nerves exposed, resulting in intense pain. This is why your dentist will tell you to avoid things like using a straw after extraction.

Whether you are in our office for a tooth extraction, a smile makeover, or for a simple cleaning, our personal, casual, and relaxed style in providing quality dental care will help put you at ease. We’ll take the time to get to know your needs, answer your questions about home care of your dental issues, tell you about the latest techniques and materials, and make sure that you are comfortable. Find out just how pleasant a visit to the dentist and enhancing your smile can be. Call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for complete family dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P.S. Wisdom tooth extractions are more likely to result in dry socket issues than other teeth, and people who smoke are more susceptible to the condition in general.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Here’s How to Reduce Risk of Heart Disease ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old female who had a stress test, echocardiogram and carotid study. I passed all tests. My cholesterol is 173, with my HDL 56, LDL 95.6 and triglycerides 108. My blood pressure is 110/64. The cardiologist put me on 5 mg of Crestor. He feels this will help my numbers. He also has me taking CoQ10 and vitamin D3 in case my legs start aching from the Crestor. I’ve been taking everything now for two weeks, and my legs are starting to ache. Is it really necessary to stay on Crestor? -- J.S. ANSWER: I put all your numbers into the standard risk calculator at www.cvriskcalculator.com, and your risk for heart disease or stroke in the next 10 years is 6.8%. That is in a range where medication therapy is not usually recommended. Of course, I can’t tell you to stop taking the medication your doctor has recommended. He may know something about you that I don’t. It’s possible you have a less-common risk factor your cardiologist may not have told you about. Some people with very good cholesterol and blood pressure numbers have high levels of C-reactive protein, for example, which confers an increased risk for heart disease. That’s true even in people with desirable cholesterol levels, and people in that situation would clearly benefit from taking Crestor or a similar medicine. All of these medicines have the risk of muscle aches, although the risk of serious muscle damage is |very small. Nearly everyone can reduce their heart disease risk by having a diet with very little meat but high in vegetables, legumes and nuts, along with whole grains and fruits. Regular moderate exercise is as important as diet. Keeping stress levels low, having good close relationships and sleeping 7-8 hours daily are underappreciated beneficial factors to reduce heart risk as well. ***

THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. Those candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Inexpensive gift idea: On the front of an empty photo album or scrapbook, print out and arrange color photos of your recipient in a collage. Glue the photos to the front of the album and cover with a decoupage glaze, like Mod Podge. Let dry and glaze again. You’ve just made a one-of-a-kind gift! * If you are a re-gifter, always document from whom and in what year you received a gift. Then re-gift it to someone who will have little to no contact with that person. For example, if Aunt Emily from out of town sends you a lovely soap basket that you would never use, you could re-gift it for your office party. * After-Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. * “Recycle in the new year by using wrapping supplies to help store your holiday decorations. The cardboard tube from gift wrap can be cut into smaller pieces, which you can wrap strands of tree or house lights around. Boxes can be put to use to hold ornaments or other decorations, and ribbon and bows that are still in good condition can be tucked away for re-use next year.” -- E.F. in Oregon Page 13

POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK (NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips. • Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. • Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant. • Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. • Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. • Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Pants on Fire! The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has put out a timely warning about fire safety, especially for seniors. The main statistic is grim: We seniors make up about 16% of the population, but account for a whopping 77% of all clothing fires. Cooking heads the list of dangers, with fires from the stovetop and oven. Closely following are fires from smoking and being outside burning trash and debris. Space heaters are on the list, of course. The advice from the experts: • Don't cook when you're wearing a bathrobe or anything with long, wide sleeves. Any loose clothing can catch fire if you're too close. • If you burn debris and trash outside, stay back from the fire. A better idea, however, is not to do any outdoor burning yourself. • Don't smoke in bed, ever. • Keep an eye on your space heater. It's far too easy to be too close to a space heater and not notice that your pants or robe are about to catch fire. • If the worst happens and your clothes catch fire, don't run! Drop to the floor and roll, and keep rolling until the fire is out. Grab a blanket if it's necessary to put the fire out. Call 911 and put cool water on your burns until help arrives. • Do you have a fire extinguisher? Did you know that the chemicals inside can expire? They will typically last from five to 15 years, so be sure to check yours.

How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.

Act of kindness A huge thank you to the kind lady who paid for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts on Saturday the 28th in Batavia. I was having a tough morning, and you made my day. Many blessings to you and your family, and I will definitely pay it forward! Kudos to feeding the birds How petty! I can’t believe someone would be asked to leave a parking lot over feeding birds! I am an animal lover, especially fond of birds, and I applaud the kindness you have shown by caring for the seagulls. Can’t believe that the world has become so cynical and harsh that

Loser To the loser who stole the World War II Veteran’s Flag I put on my Dad’s grave at [local cemetery] in [local town]: I can’t even say you should be ashamed of yourself, because losers aren’t. To think a veteran or active military member would risk their life for some sad, pathetic grave robber like you is beyond words. It did not blow away, nor did an animal carry it off, other than the two-legged loser that stole it.

Beauty shop blessing I go to the beauty shop every week. On my last visit, I noticed a gentleman sitting in a chair waiting for his wife. After

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

Satellite Internet That is Unlimited With No Hard Data Limits!

(NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children.

2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4

ALABAMA HOLLEY FARM

• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.

The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. For those last-minute folks, there still are plenty of ways to ensure your shopping list is checked off. The following gifts are quick to purchase and can still make for thoughtful presents. • Liquor or wine basket: Prepackaged spirits often come with decorative glasses and other accoutrements for entertaining. What’s more, they’re convenient to purchase if you’re on a time crunch. • Fueling station gift card: Drivers will appreciate a gift card to their favorite fueling station. Such cards suit anyone who has a car and frequently travels or commutes. • Food basket: A visit to the supermarket or a convenience center can yield many tasty finds that can be packaged together into a gift basket. Pair foods with a gift card to that retailer. • Streaming service: Offer to treat a loved one to a month or two of their favorite streaming television or movie service. If they already have streaming subscriptions, offer to cover the cost of the subscription for a few months. • Premade gifts: Don’t overlook your local pharmacy as a place to find convenient gifts. Look for unique items in the seasonal aisle, where you might be able to find stockingstuffer toiletries or cosmetic gifts that suit several people on your shopping list.

MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL Make lunch or dinner part of the day. Incorporate refueling into your shopping plans. Failure to eat or drink can lead to hunger pangs and test shoppers’ patience, two factors that are seldom conducive to successful shopping. Having an end goal to meet friends or family at a nearby restaurant - even a dining location right within the mall - can inspire intrepid shoppers to get their work done promptly. Reward yourself for a job well done over a tasty meal and maybe a cocktail. Just be sure to indulge responsibly.

LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS Stay within your budget. Even last-minute shoppers have holiday shopping budgets. But it can be harder for last-minute shoppers to stick to their budgets because they have less time to comparison shop and hunt for deals. As the holiday shopping season winds down, resist the temptation to go over budget. If a gift you had in mind is available but more than you can spend, look for something else. Overspending on holiday shopping in December is a recipe for debt in January, and no shopper wants to begin the new year weighed down by consumer debt.

The Little Free Pantry: Neighbors Feeding Neighbors BY AMANDA DUDEK

Y

ou are probably familiar with this old riddle: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. When Batavia’s Jenn Noon asked herself, How do you feed a city, the answer was clear. One neighborhood at a time. It all started one hot afternoon last August. Two Batavia business owners threw a great afternoon for kids on State Street, complete, with free popsicles, sidewalk chalk and more. Noon, who spends a lot of time volunteering since her decision to go back to college, described the State Street neighborhood as one of Batavia’s more challenging areas. “I wanted to participate, so I set up tables with free snacks for the kids,” she explained. Just like that, The Little Free Pantry was born. “I didn’t have a vehicle or anything like that, so I was walking to and from stores a lot,” Noon recalled. “Marianne Skye, owner of Blue Pearl Yoga, was a lifesaver. She would pick me up, drop things off. She even had a refrigerator donated to us! She has just been amazing.” Skye had gotten involved with the Pantry, which started out as a repurposed entertainment center, quite by accident. “Marianne had overplanted one of their fields,” Noon remembered. “She told me about the farm, and I told her about the Pantry. Then, vegetables started flowing in. I remember they gave us daikon radishes, and you couldn’t even get those in stores!” After the addition of a refrigerator, the question of where it could be successfully hosted naturally arose. “I was turned down by several businesses, but the Dr. Kubiniec and his wife, Sharon, wholeheartedly agreed to host the Pantry right outside their dentist’s office,” said Noon. “They sponsor the electricity every month, as well.” It wasn’t long before the community embraced the idea. Keanon Sean of Batavia, built an enclosure around the refrigerator at its new location, including pantry shelves on the inside. He also installed hooks which Noon has used to offer coats to anyone in need. “Neighbors began talking to neighbors maybe they hadn’t before,” shared Noon, adding the Pantry has been called a blessing. “One gentleman came in on my birthday, and I believe he is a Veteran,” she said. “I had seen him frequently during the summer, and we would greet each other and have short conversations. He came up and handed me some money. I could tell by the look in his

eyes it really meant a lot to hm to give back. He said the Pantry had literally helped him survive, and he didn’t know what he would have done this past summer without it.” As the demand grew, so did Noon’s resources. She soon met with some of the ladies from Schwab Farms at the Genesee Country Farmers Market in Batavia. “They allowed me to come down several days a week to volunteer with them in exchange for produce for the Pantry,” said Noon. “It was amazing the kinds of things we received: apples, pumpkins, whatever the market had all season.” The Little Free Pantry is quickly growing. “The goal is obviously to be there to help those in need, but we also want to fight food waste and food insecurity,” stated Noon. “Almost half of all food in the United States goes to waste, and we would like to connect more area

hoping to use as a second Little Free Pantry in the Liberty Street area if a host business can be found. She credits the Pantry’s success to the generosity of its supporters. “I have been left speechless many, many times and have been brought to tears by people’s kindness,” said Noon. “I have to give a shout out to this incredible community because they made this possible. I was not expecting this kind of response, and I am blessed for the families.” Meanwhile, the Pantry continues to evolve. T-shirts Etc., Inc. recently donated two large canvases which are in the process of being painted in an effort to add artwork to the Pantry locations. Noon had set a goal of creating five “I was not expecting Thanksgiving food boxes for area this kind of response, families; the Pantry created 74. “We also delivered 40 from Community and I am blessed for Action and donated canned goods the families!” to other agencies which helped - Jenn Noon create 200 additional Thanksgiving meals!” Noon enthused. In fact, the Pantry has grown so much in its five-month lifetime that it has already received another refrigerator which Noon is

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Holiday Decorations Can be Dangerous DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt was admiring the wreath I made from natural materials, and during the conversation she mentioned that the berries might be poisonous to my cat, “Darwin.” If this is true, should I remove them from the wreath? -- Katie V., Boise, Idaho DEAR KATIE: Unfortunately, yes. If the wreath is accessible to your pets and an ingredient on it may be toxic, you will need to remove that ingredient and replace it -either with a nontoxic alternative or a silk or plastic equivalent. Dogs and cats alike can be at risk from certain plants, berries and leaves that are common during the holiday season. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and amaryllis all are toxic to pets. Cats are especially known for being attracted to lilies, and they can climb to just about any point in a house, so it’s important to avoid having these around at all. Artificial decorations can also pose a danger. Tinsel is the biggest no-no in a pet household; cats that ingest the sparkly strings can suffer intestinal blockage. Plus, it’s not great for the environment. Breakable ornaments, especially those thin glass bulbs that cats love to bat around, can shatter and cut their paws. And if a cat or dog ingests the broken material ... well, I don’t want to think about that. Candles can singe curious noses and wayward tails; use electric or battery-powered instead. Strings of lights pose a tangling and choking risk; place them up high, in a hard to access spot, and attach them securely using staples so a pet can’t pull them down. Coil extra electrical cord and fasten with a twist tie so pets don’t get tangled. Keep your holidays safe for pets, and they’ll stay merry, just like you. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

GREAT GIFTS FOR SENIORS: BOOKS A 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of adults age 65 and over acknowledged reading at least one book in the previous 12 months. That makes books a good bet for shoppers who don’t know what to get their 65-and-over loved ones this holiday season. But shoppers might want to opt for more traditional print books rather than e-books, as the survey found that only 15 percent of readers age 65 and over had read an e-book in the previous 12 months.

TO PROTECT THE VULNERABLE AND FULLY OPENING BUSINESSES

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.

The enemies of our Country stated, “Take God out of the hearts of the people and we can control them!!!!” As “We the People” we have a contract with our fellow man how WE want to be governed! That contract is The United States Constitution! It is an ironclad contract enforceable in a court of law! In this contract is a list of rights! Also, there is a provision that all rights, even those not mentioned in the Constitution, are protected and the rights cannot be denied by our elected officials!!!!!!! Any government official who should deny an American Citizen his/her constitutional rights can be fined at least $10,000.00 and be imprisoned for 1 year! The Supreme Court recently ruled the pandemic cannot nullify our rights protected by the Constitution! Being involved in a family business I know the stress, the depression, and all the other negative emotions that come from the slowing down of a business!!!!! The COVID restrictions dictated by Govenor Cuomo are killing the small business owner! Having a B.S. in Biology and doing extensive research WE ARE NOT IN A PANDEMIC! We the people, the small business owners, need to open their business fully but responsibly! Those who support the small business owners need to stand behind those business owners who choose to open fully! Business owners who are willing to say “NO” to COVID RESTRICTIONS and “YES” to OPENING FULLY and RESPONSIBLY call me. We can have a meeting and work on a plan of action !!!!!!

To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. AUTOMOTIVE

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

Scout out the neighborhood Use mobile phone apps to see where the locals tend to congregate and plan trips to these restaurants and other shops. Over time, you probably will start to see some familiar faces. Drive around town and get a feel for side streets instead of the main thoroughfares. It’s often off the beaten path where you happen upon the greatest finds.

Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that I am now a member of the area’s largest real estate firm, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. Being a part of the Howard Hanna team, all of my clients will be able to “Get More!”

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 91 percent of longdistance holiday travel is by personal vehicle. And while many people may associate holiday travel with long lines at airport check-in counters and security checkpoints, the BTS notes that just 5 to 6 percent of holiday trips are taken by air. The remaining 2 to 3 percent are taken by bus, train, ship, or another mode of transportation. The average long-distance holiday trip for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday is 275 miles, which is slightly longer than the average long-distance trip during the rest of the year, indicating that many travelers are willing to travel farther for the holiday season than they might be during the rest of the year. In addition, when traveling long distances for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday, travelers spend roughly four nights away from home on average.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

Shoppers across the country routinely make the holiday season one of the biggest spending periods of the year. American Research Group, Inc., said that in 2015 the average predicted expenditure on gifts equaled $882, which was up from $861 the previous year. Many holiday shoppers worry about whether or not they will have enough money for gifts, while others anticipate using credit cards or other financing methods to stretch their abilities to spend even further. This can make the holiday season more stressful than it needs to be while affecting finances into the new year. Budgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check.

EMPLOYMENT

Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
