PAW’S CORNER
By Sam MazzottaA Handful of Dog Treats Help the Medicine Go Down
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a tip for the owner who is struggling to give their dog eye medicine. Our dog had cataract removal surgery earlier this year, and we’ve had to give him drops ever since. We’ve got it down! All you need are high-value treats given before, during and a er the drops. Please feel free to share my suggestion. -Jenny H. Asheville, North Carolina
DEAR JENNY: Many thanks for the advice! Making “medicine time” less stressful and more positive is so important for pets. Folks, Jenny recommended a 100% meat dog treat, which is a great high-value snack. Look for a product like this in the pet store’s fresh food aisle. Peanut butter is another fave among dogs. One of my dogs is a huge fan of Doritos. (I have to hide them.)
Here’s some more tips for giving oral medication or drops to a dog or cat:
-- Work o some of your pet’s energy beforehand. Take the dog for a walk or have your cat play with a toy.
-- Make sure the pet is held safely. Place the cat on your lap and cradle your arm around their body, placing your hand on their chest. Have the dog sit or lie down at your feet (or in your lap), facing forward or to the side.
-- Stay calm and positive. Give your pet a small treat while being

We drive mom and dad bonkers, but they love us with all their hearts. Chicory is the sassy older sister and Toby is that pesky little brother. We love each other and we’re inseparable. We love car rides, walks with mom, and playing with friends, family, neighbors and other dogs. We’re a handful!
KNOW
The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.
A new order from the New York State Department of Education says schools must change their Native American nicknames and logos or risk losing state aid. How do you think schools should go about choosing a new name?
• Let the student body vote
• Poll the community
• Let the administration choose
• Form a committee with students, faculty, administration and community members Twitter owner, Elon Musk fired half of his workforce. He then sent this message to those who remained. “Those who choose to stay should expect long, intense hours of work. Those who leave will receive three months’ severance pay.” Would you stay at the company or would you leave?

BY JODY GREERThe season of giving is upon us, and for many neglected and abandoned animals, there is no greater gi than that of a safe, loving home with a forever family. Adop ng a pet from a local shelter is not only giving back to your community, but saving the life of an animal in need.

Rescued Treasures Pet Adop ons in Rochester is a network of over 100 fosters and volunteers. Their passion is rescuing abandoned and homeless pets. A non-profit, their caring, compassion, and desire to serve comes straight from the heart.
Avon na ve Jennifer Evere is a Rescued Treasures six-year rescue veteran. Using her wealth of knowledge, she educates fosters, prospec ve pet owners, and store volunteers. Balancing a fullme job and a busy schedule, Evere is available for guidance a er hours and on weekends.
Fierce dedica on like Evere ’s is not uncommon among Rescued Treasures volunteers who are driven to care for the well-being of our most vulnerable animal popula ons. Sadly, it’s a common mispercep on that shelter animals suffer behavioral problems. In reality, many of them were abandoned by pet owners who could no longer financially care for them, moved out of the area, or passed away.
One of the best ways to help is to foster. Rescued Treasures’ adoptable pets are at PetSmart via their loca ons in Greece and Baytown Plaza, Webster. The rescue has also opened its new Pawsi ve Cat Café on East Avenue in Rochester.
Evere con nues to support Rescued Treasures for a reason. “It’s clear they always want to do right by the animal,” she said. Like many, Evere feels rewarded by the drama c progress she has seen in shelter pets.
“One of my favorite ones was a li le black cat named Willow,” she recalled. “She had a li er, and she was fiercely protec ve of them. Although she didn’t seem to be feral, she wanted no part of anything with humans.”
Evere ’s solu on? Pa ence. “I just gave her me to come out of her shell,” she explained. “She was at my house for a year and three months. It took her that long to come out of any trauma. A wonderful couple adopted her. Her story is a testament.”
Fostering or adop ng a shelter pet means not only that you’ll save its life, but also the life of another animal that can then be taken in. Can’t adopt or foster? There are s ll many ways you can support your local animal shelter. Take a cue from our 12 Days of Christmas Pet Shelter Wishlist!

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE
AS WEATHER COOLS
(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes withthechanceofsevereweatherandan increaseinfirerisks.AccordingtotheU.S.
Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.
“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangersandtakethestepstomakesure their families and homes are protected.”
Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks:
• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work.
• Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.
• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.
• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them.
• Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family.
• Keep portable generators outside and away from the home.
• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.
• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.
• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source.
• Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.
• If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequatelywateredandgetridof itafter Christmas or when it gets dry.
Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departmentsacrossthecountryarelooking for volunteers to serve as firefighters,EMS providers, andauxiliarymembers.
“The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need morepeopletoanswerthecalltoserve.”

PEOPLE TO TIP AND GIFT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Are you making a list and checking it twice? If so, don’t forget to add a few extra people to that list who are worthy of a gift this holiday season. Certainly friends and family are in mind for presents, but what about the service providers in your life?
After a challenging year, people in the service industry might benefit from a holiday boost this year more than ever. Here’s who you may want to spread some cheer to this holiday season.
Hairdressers and nail techs: It takes a lot of effort to look one’s best, and these individuals help people put their best selves forward. Consider tipping the amount you would normally spend on one visit. If you get your hair or nails done frequently and consider this person a friend, opt for a gift instead, such as a gift card to a nice restaurant or a pampering service for him or her.
Babysitter or caregiver: This person is likely close with the family and may be deserving of more than a tip. Pick an age-appropriate gift you know this person will love. What about a coveted pair of Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or headphones? A gift card to a store you know this person frequents also can be fitting, or a year-long subscription to a streaming music or movie service.
Landscapers: If the same person or crew services the lawn most of the time, atipof $20eachisanappropriate amount.
Teachers: Class parents may take up a collection for the teacher and offer one class gift. If your student is educated by multiple teachers and the school staff is top-notch, consider stocking the staff lounge with snacks and beverages or cater a lunch.
Mail carrier: The mail is delivered six days of the week in any and all weather. Treat your mail carrier to a nice gift, but stick to the rules of the U.S.Postal Service.Mail carriers are not allowed to accept cash, checks or gift cards that can be used like credit cards. Stick to a gift of no more than $25.
Cleaning person: You rely on this person to keep your home tidy and clean. He or she is deserving of the cost of one visit, according to Roseanne Thomas, author of “Excuse Me: The Survival Guide to Modern Business Etiquette.”
Individuals can use their discretion concerning service providers in their lives who may be worthy of some extra cheer this holiday season.

GIFTING THOSE WHO LIVE FAR AWAY
The holiday season is a busy time of year for the shipping industry. While shipping companies try their best to get items to recipients in a timely manner, delays can occur. The best way to ensure that gifts arrive on time is to send them a week or two in advance, which also saves gift-givers from having to pay extra for rush shipping. The US Postal Service says international deliveries can take between seven and 21 days to arrive, so leave more time for overseas gifts.

Parents have a host of options at their disposal when the time comes to buy new cars for their families. While dad might have long dreamed of driving the fastest sports car on the market, such a vehicle does not make much practical sense when car trips figure to be made with kids in tow. Finding the right car for a family depends on a host of factors, as what makes a good vehicle for one family will not always make a great choice for another family right down the street.

Dietary fiber: The Mayo Clinic notes that dietary fiber refers to the parts of plant foods that the human body cannot digest or absorb. Fiber is typically classified as soluble, which refers to types of fiber that dissolve in water, and insoluble, which is used to describe types of fiber that promote movement of material through the digestive system. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, while insoluble can help people who suffer from constipation or irregular stools.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY
SUDDEN TOOTH PAIN
Sudden extreme tooth pain may have several causes, but it is most often caused by a cavity or cracked tooth. Both expose the sensitive, inner layers of the tooth that are normally protected by enamel. As a cavity forms, you may experience sudden pain when eating or drinking. A cavity or crack can allow bacteria into the pulp of the tooth, where it can become infected and lead to an abscess or other problems. An old or loose filling can also expose nerves and cause tooth pain. Other causes may be eroding enamel and receding gums, the latter of which is often caused by gum disease. Both uncover the vulnerable layers of the inner tooth and can cause sudden pain.
Sudden tooth pain is your body sending a message that something is
wrong and needs attention. Ignoring the pain means you also ignore the underlying problem, and treatment becomes a more serious undertaking. Be smart! For excellence in dental care from a caring staff committed to your comfort, well-being, and sunny smile, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, state-of-the-art dental office at 6 Batavia City Centre.
P.S. A visit to the dentist for a cleaning, filling, or whitening treatment can sometimes make teeth more sensitive for a couple of weeks.

THE BENEFITS OF BUILDING A STRONG CORE
Become a better athlete: Core training has long been a key component of professional athletes’ exercise regimens, and it’s just as beneficial to amateur athletes as well. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strong core powers a host of athletic activities, including golf, tennis, cycling, running, swimming, and team sports like baseball and volleyball. A strong core also benefits outdoor enthusiasts who love to kayak and hike difficultterrain.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.Decade-Long High Lymphocyte Count Isn’t a Cause for Concern
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female and almost 75 years old. My vital signs are always normal, and I am active, but slightly overweight. I get quarterly blood draws, and every reading is in the normal range except for the lymphocytes. That count is higher, just outside the normal range (the lab’s range is 850 to 3,900 cells/uL, and my absolute lymphocytes are 4,377 cells/uL). This has occurred in the blood draws from the last two or three years, with the exception of one that was back in the normal range. About 12 years ago, after several abnormal results, I saw a hematologist, who reported nothing wrong after doing more extensive blood work. No reason could be given for it. I am concerned, but not obsessing over it. Is there any reason you can give for the slightly high lymphocyte count? -- S.M.
ANSWER: Lymphocytes are one of the two major types of white blood cells found in the blood (the other are the granulocytes, the most common of which are the neutrophils). High levels of lymphocytes raise suspicion for serious blood disorders such as some leukemias, lymphomas and related blood diseases, but there are other causes. Acute stress can do it, but you have been living with this for many years. Not having a spleen causes high levels of lymphocytes, whether you are born without one or have it surgically removed. Chronic infection is another reason.
I suspect your hematologist did a more sophisticated set of tests looking for blood disorders, and the fact that your level is the same after 12 years also supports my suspicion that this level is normal for you. Normal levels are generally defined as what is found in people without evidence of disease 95% of the time. So, by definition, 5% of normal people will have their result on any given lab fall outside of the normal range. Since yours is just outside of the normal range and, as I said, unchanged for years, I think you can relax your level of anxiety. Periodic blood tests do seem prudent, however, and further testing would be recommended in the event that the count starts getting higher or you develop any new symptoms.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson* Use silicone caulk to make nonskid beads on the bottom of your pet dishes. They will stay in one place instead of getting scooted all around the kitchen.
* Need a quick iron job but don’t have the time to iron? Spray a clean kitchen towel with a mixture of water and a little fabric softener until damp. Pop it in the dryer with the item that’s wrinkled. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get all the wrinkles out and smell great to boot!
* While we’re on ironing tips, here’s a great one from T.C. in Alabama: “If you have mineral deposits on your iron, use a toothbrush and toothpaste (mild abrasive) to polish them off your iron’s face. Rinse with water, and next time, use distilled water for steaming.”
* “When driving a nail into a plaster wall, first put down a piece of tape at the spot where you will insert the nail. Tap the nail in right through the tape, then pull it away to discard. It often will keep the surrounding plaster from crumbling at the site of the nail.” -- W.L. in Oregon
* When your cabinet door magnet locks are too strong, try putting a piece of tape over the magnet. It decreases the strength of the magnet.
* If you paint your radiators, make sure that the paint you use is intended to be heat-resistant. To get the best finish, paint while the radiator is warm.
HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS
(NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years.
Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high.
Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
DID YOU KNOW? Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures
REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE
(NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions.
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have.
The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications.
“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.
“IfyoususpectyouhaveAFib,meetwithyourdoctor.AFibcanbemanaged, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor.
The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda CharlesWorkout Goals for 2023?
We love our new exercise coach. is is the young student who used us as guinea pigs for a college class project, graduated and has now been hired by the senior center as our permanent workout guru. It’s only been a month, and already we want to make him Employee of the Year.
Somehow he managed to convince the town to spend large dollars to out t a space in the rec center dedicated to workout equipment for seniors. But we haven’t just been turned loose with all that fancy new gear. Coach has required that we all have a personal session with him wherein he will instruct us on each machine and ll out our personal goal sheet with the weights and repetitions for each one. Periodically he will stalk through the room, instruct on posture, scrutinize someone’s goal sheet and ensure the machine’s weight is set correctly.
e bonus for us is that the cost per month is less than one-quarter the amount charged by the regular gyms in our area.
Is a gym workout in your plans for 2023? While you might not be lucky enough to have a personal coach and a brand-new dedicated-for-seniors exercise room at your rec center, you still might be able to join a gym near you.
Do you qualify for a low-cost SilverSneakers tness membership through your Medicare advantage or supplemental plan? Many plans have this bene t (standard Medicare does not), and over 17,000 gyms across the country participate.
If you nd a local gym (don’t forget about the YMCA), ask whether a tness expert will show you how each machine works and to generate an exercise plan for you. It’s o en included in the membership.
One bonus to signing up for a gym membership at this time of year is that gyms frequently o er discounts for the new year.

HOST A SPORTS VIEWING PARTY TO REMEMBER
Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts.
Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties, so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings.
Vary the food and beverage menu. Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. It’s still acceptable to serve staples like wings, nachos, chips, and pretzels, but try to provide some healthy fare like celery and salad as well. Even wholegrain pretzels might be more enticing to guests watching what they eat. In addition, provide alternatives to alcohol, such as water, soda and juice, for guests who are abstaining.
Upgrade your television. Projection screens are go-to options for many avid sports fans, But projectors and screens may stretch some sports fans’ budgets. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players.
Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech. As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television.
Sports viewing parties tend to be easygoing affairs that don’t require the level of planning of more formal gatherings.

Girl Scouts Rock!
A BIG shout out to the local Girl Scouts. I work at Temple Hill Cemetery and had worked a couple weeks blowing and lining up leaves. Then one day about 20 Scouts came by and did an amazing job of collecting leaves and hoisting them into the big town dump trucks. These ladies were like a swarm of bees! All business and nonstop high speed action. I was impressed and proud of our younger generation of women! Thank you for your service.
Shout Out for Dollar General in Retsof, NY
I ran in to Dollar General in Retsof on 11/19 to pick up a few items and had that dreaded "chip malfunction" on my credit card! I asked the clerk if she could cancel transaction so I could run to my car to see if I had cash. The guy behind me said, “Don't cancel, I don't mind waiting.” which was very nice! So I hurried out and returned very quickly to pay. The clerk handed me my bag and said “you’re good to go!” Of course I was amazed, it was the cashier who paid for my purchase, would not accept my money and said “Happy Holidays!” I was so surprised I didn't even say "I will pay it forward" to another unsuspecting person. Thank you for your generosity and making my day! #thebestdollargeneral
Thank you, Marc Mingoia!
Thanks to the great generosity of Marc Mingoia with the Howard Hanna Pittsford office. We all devoured this pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving specially delivered by Phillip Lane who actually delivered 2 of them in person to us for my grandson to have at his dinner. After a tough year and a half because of the loss of his dad, we appreciated the generosity. We were greatly surprised with the pies and we appreciate the goodness that still comes around in this world. The pies were deliciously made from Special Touch Bakery at 1999 Mt. Reed Boulevard. Making it even more special was it was my birthday! God bless everyone.
HOMETOWN PHOTOS
Cats
On a daily basis, I see responsible dog owners walk in our neighborhood. They keep their dogs on leashes. They clean after them. They license them. On a daily basis, I see cats, both feral and peoples’ pets, wander wherever they please. They are unlicensed. No one cleans up after them when they come into our yards to do their business. They are free to multiply unchecked. Why is it that cat owners do not have to follow the same rules as dog owners? Why do people continue to feed the feral cats? Wouldn’t it be better to take them into your homes? You could feed them, keep them warm, and have them spayed.
A Roof!
A roof! A pretty simple solution for the Bills stadium, especially as they plan for a new billion dollar arena that we will be partly paying for. The Bills/Browns game being moved to Detroit (Ford stadium complete with a roof.) robs Buffalo and Orchard Park of some significant revenue to boot. It’s certainly not too late to consider a roof for the Bills and for those fans who think real football is played in whatever Mother Nature throws at us, I’m sure given the choice, you’d rather be out of the elements and enjoy an NFL game that showcases talent on the field without weather distractions. And, as happy as we all are now that the Bills are in the conversation of elite status in professional football, there wouldn’t be as much pressure that they remain there if their fans could easily enjoy a football game inside.
Thanksgiving Heartbreak
To my neighbor who put a food pantry Thanksgiving food box into this morning’s trash, your wastefulness has broken my heart. I don’t know your circumstance, but I do know that there’s a Little Food Pantry just around the corner. That’s where I’ll be taking the 2 cans of green beans, 2 boxes of stuffing mix, 1 box of cornbread mix, 1 jar of apple sauce, 1 bottle of pancake syrup, 1 butternut squash, and 1 bag of potatoes, all unopened and untouched. You should be ashamed of yourself.
You love what you do, now love where you do it.

WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING, HOW YOU CAN HELP
(NAPSI)—The global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment,as well.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease.
Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this.
What’s Being Done
For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the healthandsafetyof ouremployeesand communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has:
• Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy;

Refresh Your Home for Spring
Eliminate the extras
While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.
• Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions;
• Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and
• Developed an innovative solution to reuse water from an existing chiller that saves 31 million gallons of water each year.
What You Can Do
For your part, you can help the environment these four ways:
1.Get your car a tune-up. Properly maintained vehicles get better gas mileage and emit fewer pollutants.
2.Plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide,a greenhouse gas.
3.Run the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have full loads.
4.Don’t let the water run while you shave or brush your teeth.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacationdaysin2015.Vacationisnotjustatimetogetaway,butavaluable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN
Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE
(NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save:
1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts.
2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt paymentsandrent)andthingsyouwant (vacations, eating out). Subtract what youhavetospendon“needs”fromyour monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.”
3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account.Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.”
4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you.
5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save.
6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up.
What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE
For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.
The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.
A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.
