INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Some retired racing greyhounds may exhibit behaviors typical of puppies. The Greyhound Project notes that, thanks to their early training, retired racing greyhounds have never been without the company of other greyhounds. As a result, when spending time alone for the first time in their lives, retired greyhounds may make up for lost time as a puppy by exhibiting puppy-like behaviors such as chewing. This need not cause alarm in new greyhound parents, as the dogs typically outgrow the behavior very quickly.

EVERY DAY Here’s hoping your season is filled with all the delights, both big and small, that make Christmastime so special.

KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, celebrants should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it’s not possible to cut your own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided.

Blood-Pressure Goal: How Low Should It Go?

By Keith Roach, M.D.

ELECTIVE DENTISTRY IN THE ERA OF SOCIAL MEDIA The number of elective dental procedures performed these days is ever-increasing. A fantastic smile symbolizes a person’s commitment to his or her whole state of care, increasing perceived personal attractiveness and confidence. Trendy fashion, hairstyles, and flawless skin remain coveted beauty indicators. However, a gorgeous set of teeth has now become the most sought-after of status symbols. Before- and after-photo comparisons, often showcased on multiple social media platforms, illustrate the easily achievable and realistic improvements of physical appearance through cosmetic dentistry. In an era of instant gratification, patients are seeking picture-perfect teeth and want them immediately. New cosmetic technology offers a much broader range of clinical options for aesthetic improvements to meet this increasing demand.

Improving the look, health, and function of your smile is our primary focus at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. From cosmetic dentistry to general family dentistry and preventive care, we are dedicated to working with our patients toward the goal of achieving the healthiest, most attractive smiles possible. Are you curious how today’s cosmetic dentistry procedures can virtually change your life? We’d be glad to tell you about the many ways we can help make your smile a dazzling one. Just call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P. S. Etruscans used ivory and bone as early as 700 BC to create dentures. This practice continued until the 1800’s.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do. DEAR DR. ROACH: My sister, 75, is taking only two drugs for the past three years, and they are both for high blood pressure. Now she finds that her blood pressure is 110/70 and wonders why she can’t take less of her medications as an experiment. For instance, if she cut her pills in half and still has her blood pressure under 120/80, would there be any problem with this? -- R.I. ANSWER: The optimum goal of blood pressure treatment is still not known; however, evidence is accumulating that it might be lower than the less than 140/less than 90 that is has typically been the target. At least in higher-risk people with high blood pressure, a large trial found that a goal blood pressure of less than 120/less than 90 had better outcomes than the traditional goal. A more recent follow-up study showed that risk of dementia was also lower in the group that had the lower blood pressure. Not everyone can tolerate a blood pressure that low: Side effects of medications can be problematic. But it’s reasonable to aim at 120/80 or less. In your sister’s case, she is a little bit below that. It wouldn’t be unreasonable if, after discussing with her doctor, she tried reducing the dose of one of the medications. If her blood pressure remains lower than 120/80, she could continue that lower dose. However, if she feels perfectly well on her current dose, there is not a reason to reduce the dose. In either case, don’t reduce the dose without a discussion, nor cut the pill in half without checking with the doctor or pharmacist. Some pills shouldn’t be cut in half. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus FRANCIS P. CHURCH (1839-1906)

Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? – Virginia O’Hanlon

no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

V

irginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measuredby the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. – The New York Sun, September 21, 1897 Thanks Faith Trimble, for recommending this beautiful column.

Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

AARP Survey: We Want to Grow Older at Home We want to stay home as we age. That much is clear from a recent survey by AARP. The 70-question survey touched on all types of topics about home and community preferences, with responses broken down by age. Here are some of the answers from seniors age 50 and older: 77% of us want to stay in our own homes as we age. 79% of us want to stay in our communities as we age. 33% of us know we will need modifications to our homes so we can stay in them and be safe as well as independent. The number of households headed by seniors in the next 20 years is going to rise from 34 million to 48 million. We’re going to want smart home devices and bathtub grab bars (and a full bath on the ground floor), as well as voice activated gadgets, wider doorways and easy access through the front door. We’ll also want accessory dwelling units (known as ADUs), such as in-law apartments or additions, so others can be nearby but not living with us. (AARP and Lowe’s have announced a collaboration to launch Lowe’s Livable Home, which will include services and products to help us create and build what we need so we can stay in our homes. See its website at www.lowes.com.) Safety also is on our minds, and over half of us would move to another area if it’s safer. Nearly half would move if it lowered our expenses. But we want a nice community, too, with bike trails and fast internet, ideally a small town where stores and services are nearby. If you want to see the survey questions and compare your own answers, go to www.aarp.org and search for 2021 AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

BIG IDEAS FOR BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES (NAPSI)—If you own or run a business, you’re not alone. There are some 30 million businesses in the U.S., ranging from small storefronts to large enterprise entities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While businesses of all sizes play a critical role in the economy, each workplace faces its own unique challenges, especially as it relates to growth and scalability. With company and workforce growth comes changing telecommunication needs. You might need to hire staff in new areas or cater to mobile millennials. Employees often expect their employers to provide them with flexible communication tools. Most business professionals want multiple connectivity options from their business phone solution, according to recent research from leading tech firm IDG. If you’re like most managers, you desire top-of-the-line technology that can help drive operational efficiencies and cater to your growth projections. Growing a business can be expensive but you shouldn’t have to miss out on communications solutions that can empower your workforce and spur continued growth. When you’re looking at your telecommunication needs, keep these important factors in mind. First, consider durable, affordable Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) deskset phones, which can manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls. Moving your telecommunications to the cloud can expand your phone system while maintaining central control. Cloud-based VoIP scales up or down, making it easy to add new locations or increase head count. SIP can also improve your business if you’re upgrading from an Ethernet jack or a traditional circuit transmission. This technology provides clear audio and reduces the need for costly installation and maintenance contracts. Some SIP desksets offer excellent user experience. Think color LCD screens for easy navigation, second screen displays with programmable keys, HD sound quality for natural conversations, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free headset calls. Secondly, take an introspective look at what’s truly needed from a communications perspective of your business. Evaluate what your operational landscape looks like. You may require full-featured desksets and handsets, which can hold, transfer, conference and intercom. Or you may need cordless solutions to dramatically improve mobility around a busy workplace. Cordless handsets and wireless headsets let people take calls as they move around a restaurant, warehouse or large office, for example. Also consider whether you’ll need the ability to expand your communications system as your business grows. You may find multiple cordless handsets or desksets, with their own phone numbers or extensions, essential to future-proofing your company for more employees and customers. Remember, the right communications tools can have a major effect on the productivity, experience and growth of your company. Select a phone solution that meets your unique needs, as well as one with flexibility, mobility features, dependable call quality, advanced call handling, reliable U.S.-based technical support, and warranty coverage. Good examples of these solutions include the new ErisTerminal SIP desksets and cordless mobility solutions from VTech Business Solutions.

Help Feed Hungry Pets This Holiday Season

Maximum income for eligibility: 1 person $43,300 • 2 people $49,500 Come visit, tour and see for yourself

“Look at your walls...

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, pandemic lockdowns, job losses and financial instability caused many families, along with their pets, to experience food insecurity. Because groceries are a higher priority for families than pet food, many pets got less to eat or lived off table scraps, which can be unhealthy over the long term. In 2020, local shelters, businesses and other groups came together to collect donations of food or money to purchase food and supplies for pets. These were a great help. However, we’re not out of the woods yet. Rising prices due to inflation and supply chain issues, plus continued financial instability, means that many pets will go hungry again this year. Can Paw’s Corner readers rise to the occasion again this year and help neighbors and their pets to stay fed and healthy? -- Shelter Volunteer in Wichita, Kansas DEAR VOLUNTEER: You’ve done just that, and I thank you! This holiday season, I know my readers will make the effort to help pets through donations of food, supplies and cash. But maybe you’re a new pet owner or have never donated before. Maybe you don’t even have a pet right now, but want to help. There are so many choices out there. My advice is to pick just one way to help, because no contribution is too small. Pet food supplier Chewy has a great article on its website with ways to help: https://be.chewy.com/ pet-food-banks/ Local shelters often do community outreach to help feed pets so owners can keep their pets and not surrender them. Contact the nearest pet shelter, either by email or phone, and ask what type of donations they need. Your contribution will go directly to that shelter, so you’ll know the impact you’re making. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To prevent candle wax from sticking to a candleholder, swipe the inside with a little olive oil. It’ll do the trick! * Make your own gift wrap from everyday items like newspaper (think color comics) and children’s drawings, which can be glued together along the edges. For a really unique wrapping, try inexpensive fabric. * Cookies are so fun to make (and to eat). To save some of your favorites for the new year, simply place dough balls on a cookie sheet and freeze. Pop into a freezer-safe bag, and you can have freshly baked cookies pretty much anytime! -- JoAnn * “I have two carafes that I use for my breakfast bar. I keep coffee in one, and the other holds milk or cream. On holiday nights, I prep the cream carafe and put it in the fridge. In the morning, while the first pot of coffee is brewing, I fill the coffee carafe with hot water and let it sit until the coffee is ready. It keeps the coffee hot longer. Then guests can serve themselves some coffee while the next pot is brewing.” -- D.A. in Ohio * “Wine: Nobody I know is wasting it. But if you’re done before the bottle is, pour the leftover wine into ice-cube trays to save it. You can use it later in recipes or (my favorite) to chill a glass of wine!” -- E. in Florida * A can opener’s crevices can be cleaned by “opening” a length of waxed paper. Kitchen scissors can be sharpened by folding a piece of aluminum foil and cutting through it with the scissors.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Donate Life America, 39,700 organ transplants from 19,300 donors brought new life to patients and their families in 2019. Nearly 60 percent of the more than 100,000 men, women and children awaiting lifesaving organ transplants are from multicultural communities. Potential transplant recipients who identify as African American or Black make up the largest percentage from such communities, accounting for 29 percent of the people from multicultural communities currently waiting for an organ transplant. Hispanics/Latinos (20 percent), Asian Pacific Islanders (9 percent), and American Indians/Alaska Natives (1 percent) are other groups with significant amounts of people currently awaiting a transplant.

Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

FINANCING FUNERALS

Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil

According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shoppers across the country routinely make the holiday season one of the biggest spending periods of the year. American Research Group, Inc., said that in 2015 the average predicted expenditure on gifts equaled $882, which was up from $861 the previous year. Many holiday shoppers worry about whether or not they will have enough money for gifts, while others anticipate using credit cards or other financing methods to stretch their abilities to spend even further. This can make the holiday season more stressful than it needs to be while affecting finances into the new year. Budgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check.

Downtown Avon What a beautiful job the downtown Avon merchants have done decorating their storefront windows for the Christmas season! Cheers also to Assemblyman Marjory Byrnes as well. Nice job, everyone!

RPO Gala Holiday Pops So lucky are we to have the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra! The Gala Holiday Pops was sensational and such a panacea for this hectic time we’re going through. Jeff Tyzik led the ensemble through the hymns of the season, and performed some songs with his own personal arrangements that made them more memorable and fun. Another year off for the orchestral choir made up of high school students from our area, hopefully as Tyzik noted, they’ll be back next year. Jeff does such a nice job of introducing each song and many times along with a story. Such a nice addition to the wonderful music we heard! He also noted that the arts, and of course music, can lift our spirits and souls in our times of need. The Rochester Philharmonic continues to give us the gift of wonderfully performed music. Thanks RPO!

Christmas thanks Thanks so much to the Rushville Lions Club who delivered wonderful Christmas food boxes which included Ham & the trimmings for a lovely meal along with some cupboard staples and even a pretty Christmas pillow. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Christmas lights Thank you to every single family throughout Livingston County and neighboring counties who adorned their homes and yards with Christmas lights and decorations. Whenever my family drives anywhere, my children enthusiastically look for these homes and enjoy them so much. You have brought so much joy to this season. Thank you!

Wanda’s is wonderful! Where can you go to eat where the owner comes around with a tray and passes out Christmas cookies and snacks to the diners? Wandas in Livonia! Many thanks to her for such a nice place to meet and eat! Thank you! To Polly Hanna who owns Rush Inter Pet, Inc. Pet Cemetery: Thank you for taking care of our animals. People should drive through it. It is open to everyone. It is better taken care of than most cemeteries. Thank you. - T.L.D. Riga Christmas Concert On Saturday, December 18th, the Riga Recreation hosted its annual Christmas Concert celebration at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall, featuring the Churchville-Chill School District’s singing group, Varsity Vocals, lead by conductor Mr. Erik Reinhart. The Riga community was treated to outstanding vocalizations of holiday favorites. The true essence of Christmas was captured by this wonderfull group of singers and their teacher. We have here one more example of the young people and staff of CCCSD that we are very proud of. Merry Christmas! - David T.
