PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

The Best Leash-Collar Combo for Your Dog

Eq-Eden Ranch, Bergen

585-548-7329

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’d like to upgrade my Lab’s collar and leash, because he’s pretty powerful and tugs against his collar all the time until he starts to choke. What do you recommend? Sara B., via email DEAR SARA: I’m a fan of harnesses, especially for dogs that like to pull at the leash. A harness fits around a dog’s front legs and torso, and has a top strap with a clip ring for the leash located between the dog’s shoulders. It’s secure and sturdy, it stays on your dog, and he won’t injure himself trying to pull away from you. (You can also keep his collar on, mainly so his license tag is always visible.) Some dog harnesses come with a sturdy handle sewn onto the top strap. It’s not so much for picking up the dog but is an additional point of control if you’re worried about your dog bolting or jumping up on other people. For the long term, of course, your Lab needs to improve his basic obedience skills. He should never tug at his leash, but should walk next to you. Putting him into a harness will give you more control. Dogs tend to respond more often to a tug on the harness, which applies pressure at several points rather than just around the neck. Those multiple contact points disperse pressure around the dog’s torso so that he remains comfortable and uninjured, reducing anxiety and hopefully making him more receptive to training commands. Harnesses are not as cheap as collars, but they’re well worth the investment, especially when dealing with a strong, independent thinker like your Lab. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

S E V RA Pavilion girls volleyball A great Pavilion Central School community and alumni has supported and contributed to our Pavilion Girls Volleyball Team! A big thank you to the Pavilion Central School administration, teachers, staff, and students that came and cheered us on. While winning the Class D Sectional Title and the Far West Regional, we had the largest crowd, always giving the team a standing ovation at match point. They also followed the team to Glens Falls for the State Tournament. Even though we had to travel the furthest of the Class D teams, we had the largest crowd with the loudest and proudest fans. Everyone in the Pavilion Central Community made an amazing experience even better. Thank you!

Wallet return On November 9th, my wallet dropped out of my car when I went to go into Target in Batavia. I didn't realize I had dropped it. A man saw it had been dropped and brought it to the desk intact. A relative working at the desk knew me and brought it to me. I appreciate your integrity more than you know, and I am very grateful! - A very thankful neighbor

School violence I have been hearing rumors of [local] school district having a bullying problem again. My two great grand children, plus other kids are being bullied, as well. My one great grandson was pushed into a "pond." Why are these bullies being tolerated again? My granddaughter went through this school district in the 1980s, and she was beaten on her head. Why? If you have surveillance cameras, please review them. Stop the violence. This behavior is not acceptable! Manchin makes sense Joe Manchin stood up against his own Democratic party. This new bill will cost a lot, although [some] say it costs nothing. The biggest polluters in the world did not attend the Climate Summit, and Sleepy Joe lived up to his name. Shutting down America's coal, natural gas and oil industries kills our jobs and our independence from other countries. If we don't produce it for ourselves, other countries will produce it for us. This does not help America or the climate. Hope you enjoy the price of gas and your upcoming heating bills. Pull together If there were ever a time in the history of our world that everyone needs to be pulling together, it is now. But it seems that instead of pulling together, we in the United States seem to be finding more reasons to find fault with one another. Neither the far right nor the far left are where we should be. With all the problems Covid has caused because of businesses having to temporarily close down all over the world, we are experiencing major supply shortages. Many companies find themselves forced to raise their prices to stay in business. Things will eventually get better, and if we all work together, it will happen sooner rather than later.

COMMUNITY HYGIENE BANK FINDS A BY KIMBERLY LONG

W

e may not realize this, but ma many individuals and families livingg in the Brockport area struggle with th obtaining the necessary items to maintain n hygiene! This is a difficulty for individualss and families that are in need. Food stamps are a wonderful resource for community members in need, but they do not cover hygiene items! This includes toothbrushes, ng paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning ine in products, adult necessities, feminine products, and a list of other products.. The Community Hygiene Bank (CHB) of Brockport supports their community by providing these important items to those in need. Before the pandemic, this organization was able to provide not just hygienic items, but also offer food and drink, social support, and even prayer while these individuals waited on intake. Intake is the process in which each person in need goes through to ensure that they get what they really need, and that they qualify for this support. Now, things are a bit different. There are no longer large groups of people sitting and chatting in one area; instead, single families and individuals come in one at a time to go through intake and evaluation. Rather than having a runner take their items to their vehicles for them, the CHB uses a drive-up system where the items are loaded directly into the vehicles. Support from

United Way during the pandemic also largely assisted the group in continuing their efforts in supporting their community, and they are extremely grateful for this contribution, among others. Scarlett Aeckerle noted, ‚“This was the only thing these people came out of the house for!‚“ The only social contact they had seen since the shutdown was when they pulled up to the hygiene bank to receive items they desperately needed. This time was especially hard for those who had lost their jobs. This, unfortunately, included many elderly people in the community. However, these changes did not limit the help these people received, and if anything, it gave them the social interaction that they were lacking during this time. Having gone through

NEW HOME

upheavals upheaval up al of its own, the Community Hygiene Bank presses on, and continues to assist their co community at Jubilee Christian Church, th their new location at 3565 Lake Rd! The Community Hygiene Bank will hold its next ‚“Personal Care Blessings Bag‚“ Distribution at 12:00pm (noon) on January 8th, 2022! All are welcome to join in the efforts of helping their community. Thi This distribution will be a drive-up system, and th an those in need must be present to receive a bl bles essi si bag. These bags will include things blessing such as soap, shampoo, razors, feminine products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, paper products, dish and laundry detergent, and cleaning items. Starting at 11:30 am, an entry ticket will be given to each car that enters the Jubilee Christian Church parking lot. These items are available to Brockport area residents of any age who are in need. When the CHB held its first event in The Community March of 2017, they served 11 families. Now, in 2021, they are Hygiene Bank has serving 150 families, and that found a new number is still growing! Because home at Jubilee of this, the need for donations, Christian Church! products, and volunteers is dire! A large majority of the volunteers in the past have been elderly, so they are at risk if they continue to volunteer under current conditions. The CHB urges anyone who is healthy and ready to consider serving those in need in their community. More information can be found on their Facebook page, or by emailing communityhygienebank@gmail. com. The CHB can also be reached at (585) 6378530. The Brockport community has often thanked the CHB for all of its hard work and faith throughout the hard times of COVID-19, and they appreciate the ongoing support that the CHB has given to community members in need.

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Maintain your vehicle. Poorly maintained vehicles endure undue stress that can be prevented by adhering to routine maintenance schedules. Peruse your vehicle’s owner’s manuals to determine the recommended intervals to change the oil and replace the air filter and spark plugs. These simple maintenance tasks are easy and inexpensive, but they make it easier for engines to run smoothly and make efficient use of fuel.

* For every side dish that requires extra preparation time, plan for one or two that don’t. For instance, if you are preparing a casserole with many ingredients and complicated instructions, serve a package of vegetables that require nothing more than steaming. * Wine buyers tip: Experts say to multiply the number of adult guests by a half bottle to determine how many bottles of wine to buy for your holiday gathering. Add an additional glass of wine per guest for every hour after dinner you expect guests to linger. * How to peel potatoes: Boil whole potatoes with skin on for 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes). You should be able to stick a knife all the way through without resistance. Then remove them to an ice bath for 10 seconds each. The skin will slip right off. * “Have kids make their own whipped cream with a jam jar! Fill a screw-top jar (glass, chilled, works really well) halfway with heavy cream, a little sugar and any flavoring extracts you like, then seal and shake. Kids also can make butter with cream in a jar. You may add a pinch of salt instead of sugar, and shake longer.” -- A.A. in Florida * Researchers tell us that the best time to interview is late morning on a Tuesday. UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

HANDY MAN HOME REPAIR Roof Leaks

Gutter CHIMNEY Cleaning REPAIR & CLEANING SERVICE

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

NO JOB TOO SMALL

How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.

585-802-1544

You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also:

Floor Sanders, Backhoes, Lawn & Garden Equipment & More!

• Water and moisture resistant.

To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. DID YOU KNOW? The pinnacle of birthday celebrations, if there’s no piñata to break open, is when the birthday cake comes out and party attendees serenade the guest of honor. The song everyone harmonizes to is among the most widely recognized and well-loved tunes in the world. The “birthday song,” also known as “Happy Birthday to You,” is in the public domain in the United States and the European Union. The song originally was penned as a classroom greeting song titled “Good Morning to All,” written by sisters Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill. Both were educators and developed unique teaching strategies to assist students. The song was composed by Mildred and the lyrics were written by Patty to be used in kindergarten classrooms. It is unclear who changed the lyrics and turned the song into a birthday ditty, as none of the earliest references to the song included credits or copyright notices. Two tales circulate regarding the eventual copyright of the song. One has The Summy Company registering a copyright in 1935, crediting authors Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R. R. Forman. The other says Jessica Hill, sister to Mildred and Patty, who was working with publisher Clayton F. Summy Company, copyrighted and published “Happy Birthday to You” in 1935. Eventually Warner Chappell bought the company that was originally The Summy Company, and argued the birthday song was under copyright until 2030, making performances of the song illegal without paying royalties. However, a federal judge ruled in 2015 that Warner Chappell’s claim to a copyright on the song was not valid. The judge ruled its registration only covered a specific piano version, not the melody and lyrics. Therefore, “Happy Birthday to You” can be sung both privately and publicly without being subject to royalties or other restrictions. Page 26

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. ORAL HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH Oral health has often been linked to overall health. Recent studies have focused on the connection between individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, and stress and their loss of motivation to maintain good oral health habits, resulting in significant oral health concerns. The stress of mental health conditions creates cortisol, a hormone in the body that weakens the immune system, leading to gingivitis and periodontitis. Medications for mental health issues can also cause dry mouth, which can reduce the body’s defense mechanisms and make an individual susceptible to cavities and gingival inflammation. Because the oral cavity is the body’s most accessible environment for bacteria, dental professionals have

long been aware of how mental health can affect oral health. Everyone can benefit from preventive dental care. Experience proves it is to your advantage to take time for your oral health no matter how busy your personal or professional schedule. A few minutes spent each day on your teeth can not only help preserve good dental health, but it can also help safeguard your overall health. Nothing is more economical than regular dental checkups, so please let us help you take care of your oral health. You can reach BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246 for an appointment for comfortable, convenient dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P. S. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene that allows plaque to form on teeth, causing inflammation of the surrounding gum tissues.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

CURE!! Your fungal toenails before SUMMER 2022 • Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? • Now’s the time to get treatment. If left untreated, fungal toenails can: affect your immune system, cause recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance! • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation and numbness to their feet can develop more serious problems. • There are also safer new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one-a-day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2022. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Twisted Colon Is a Surgical Emergency ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: This past weekend, during my son’s wedding festivities, I experienced a sigmoid volvulus. Doctors recommended surgery, but I opted for a colonoscopy, which was performed successfully. Thank goodness. I was immediately a new woman, and no one would have dreamed I went through this emergency. The surgeons recommended I have my sigmoid colon removed in order to decrease the risk of recurrence. Ideally, this would happen as soon as possible. What could have prompted the sigmoid volvulus? Is it an absolute that I must have my sigmoid colon removed? What are the odds of it recurring? If I do need the surgery, how can I best prepare for it, and what are the side effects? -- M.B. ANSWER: A volvulus is the twisting of a hollow structure in the body around its long axis (imagine holding one end of a sock in each hand and flipping the middle so it twists on itself). The sigmoid colon is the most common location. It is a surgical emergency, as tissue death and gangrene may follow. The biggest risk factor for volvulus is chronic constipation, but some people just have anatomy that predisposes them to get a volvulus. Surgery is the definitive treatment, but colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to untwist the colon; medical professionals use the term “reduce.” However, your surgeon was right that you are at risk for this happening again. In those people with a history of volvulus, 50% to 60% will get another, and if you have two, the recurrence rate is even higher. For a person in generally good health, I would recommend definitive surgery to prevent recurrence of volvulus. There are no specific instructions to prepare for surgery, beyond taking good care of yourself and following your surgeon’s instructions about your medications (if any). Any abdominal surgery has the risk of bleeding, infection and adhesions (connections between loops of bowel that can lead to painful obstruction later); however, these risks are quite small.

DID YOU KNOW?

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Christmas Dinner Moves Indoors Those in power at the senior center have now decreed that we will have the annual Christmas dinner indoors instead of out in the parking lot. This flash of brilliance came after they received a number of responses that were more along the lines of “Are you crazy?” rather than the expected RSVPs. The original plan was to spread tables across the asphalt outside, with culinary arts students bringing food and drink out from the kitchen in the center, and to park a bunch of senior citizens outside in the cold in the middle of December in New England to eat that dinner. Saner heads prevailed, I hear, when a retired nurse posed the question: “And just how many of our members do you suppose are going to end up in the hospital after two hours of exposure to outdoor December temperatures?” The student chef, I also hear, claimed that he’d been asked to provide a “hot dinner” and wasn’t thrilled about having to work for hours over hot stoves only to have his creations subjected to icy temperatures. As of now, the dinner will be indoors with fewer tables. Santa will still arrive via limo, and the high-school chorus will still sing (although they’ll be out in the hall as there is no place for all of them in the actual room). Watch this space, however, because I hear there is a movement afoot (as well as a petition from members) to ditch the sit-down dinner completely and instead have a standup event with finger foods arrayed on tables and a cash bar over in the corner. “We want to see our friends and mingle” has been the cry (as well as what is written on the petition). “We want some good dance music” penciled in one signer. In a perfect world, the powers-that-be would have asked the members first. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.

Applications available online at www.leroycsd.org or from the LeRoy Central School District Office at 2-6 Trigon Park, LeRoy, NY 14482

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
