NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Looking for a great cause for gifting this year? Go to www. charitynavigator.org to find out more about how your prospective charities rank in areas like CEO pay, money spent on fundraising, etc.

Medicare Plans Do you have a dental rider?

* Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box of cake mix on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative. * Inexpensive gift idea: A cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday craft pick. Place inside a gallon-size zippertop bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice. * When holiday cookie time comes, I keep a plastic pitcher of hot water in the sink. I toss cookie cutters into it when I’m finished with them, so the corners are soaking. They really seem to only need a rinse and a quick brush-off afterward. Mine don’t get caked up with dough. -– JoAnn

IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING Freshly squeeze juice. Use a sturdy pair of tongs to squeeze all of the juice out of lemons, limes and oranges for fresh juice or lemonade.

DEAR LEO: Welcome to cat ownership! Shredded furniture frequently comes with the territory. But please don’t think I’m telling you to get used to it. This is a common problem. You will find plenty of advice online on ways to stop your cat from scratching up all of the vertical surfaces in your house. Cats adore fabric sofas; they are ideal because the wood underneath sharpens their claws while the fabric provides just the right amount of resistance. You’ll need to attack this problem from a few angles. First, by teaching Corky not to scratch furniture. Put a scratching post next to the sofa. When he reaches up to the sofa leg, gently reach under his paws and lift them up and away. Then, place Corky in front of the scratching post and pet him. Repeat this every time. A faster way to stop the problem is to shake a can of coins or hiss loudly, but this is negative reinforcement that provides no alternative for his scratching. And cats need to scratch! Once Corky starts going to the scratching post first, gradually move the post away from the sofa. To save your sofa fabric during this time, cover it with a thick layer (or multiple layers) of plastic sheeting either stapled or duct taped into place. The added benefit is that plastic is not a pleasurable scratching material, so Corky will eventually start ignoring it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. GLOW Women Rise Raises the Bar BY AMANDA DUDEK

N

ew York's GLOW Region is comprised of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties, home to some of the most charming villages and countryside in Western New York. At the same time, the region is often a scene of struggle as many of its women must strive for success. Dorothy Avery and her not-forprofit, GLOW Women Rise seek to support these women personally and professionally.

GLOW Women Rise (GWR) offers, in its stated mission, a nonjudgmental place for women of the region to come together for support and connection, advocacy – safety net services [and other] information, and opportunities to attend seminars and workshops. "Our goal with GWR is to empower, engage, and elevate women while hopefully providing them with some valuable tools," said Avery who dreams of the day when GWR has its own building. "We want to be a one-stop shop for women in search of support." As women continue to pursue professional careers, assistance for them is falling behind. "Nothing is getting taken off our plate, just getting added, including caring for parents and grandparents," explained Avery, referencing a friend who cares both for her own children and for her elderly parents. She observed that the challenges of a rural settings, little transportation and few resources, can add another layer of stress. "GWR would love to be the place where a woman could go if she was having a really bad day, grab a cup of coffee and share – and it would be free," said Avery. Avery hopes to create more resources for handling stress and its causes, resources tailored to women. "Before GWR, I was a member of a couple of groups in Batavia," she explained. "I found them to be male dominated. Women did all of the organizing, but men were the leaders. Women's issues were not being addressed, so some friends and I decided to start our own group in 2018. Thanks to Millie Tomidy Pepper, we met at the YWCA for a time. Now, we rent a space at GoArt!, have incorporated, and our nonprofit status is pending." "Women can do so much, but there is a lack of support unless you can afford to pay," continued Avery. "There is too much disparity between the Haves and the Have Nots. With GWR, we are trying to level the playing field. Women are so overwhelmed they don't even have the time to ask for help, but when women stick together, we can solve these problems with our different skills and abilities. As such a new group, we still need to take some time to get these ideas flowing." Avery pointed out that a questionnaire to determine what kind of programming and support

GLOW women are most interested in is available on the GWR website: www.glowwomenrise.org "If we can create our own network of women supporting women, we can cheer each other on to do great things!" Avery exclaimed. While COVID-19 has admittedly been a big setback for this all-volunteer organization, GWR has found ways to continue this mission. "We bridged the gap with ZOOM, although we know not everyone has access to it," she said. "Over ZOOM, we held the first session of our Ready, Set, GLOW! Series, which was about handling the holidays this year. We invited a therapist to talk with our group, and it was great!" Importantly, all the programming, including our Ready, Set, GLOW! Series, is absolutely free. "The key is you shouldn't have to put extra money together to benefit," insisted Avery. "Our next session is on December 14th, and it is about practical self-care with adult bingo and prizes thrown in. Then, in January, we will be putting together kits for our vision board session to help women envision what they want for themselves in 2021. In March, we hope to once again host our Women's Empowerment Forum focused on overcoming obstacles, which was so well-received." GWR's sessions are making an impact. "One of the women who attended our last sessions sent us a very nice note, sharing with us how our session about how to cope with the holidays had helped her realize her own need for stronger boundaries," shared Avery. GWR also supports women in practical ways. "One young woman was just going to start her first professional job, so we took her clothes shopping for office-appropriate attire," said Avery. "We want everyone to benefit, take that leap, and be daring!" As GWR moves forward into 2021, informed by responses to its questionnaire, one new goal has clearly emerged. "We recognize that we are currently a very 'white lady' organization," stated Avery, speaking to the group's current lack of diversity. "We realize we have a lot of work to do so that women of color can begin to feel comfortable with us and trust us. We want to be truly inclusive, and we are hoping to incorporate women of color at leadership levels. Until all women are represented, no women are represented." With goals like these, the GWR is aptly named. Enjoy this article? Open Daily 10-5 • Closed Tuesdays earlyowego.com Exit 64 off I-86 607-223-4723 FIVE TIPS FOR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION SUCCESS (NAPSI)—For people who are on one or more daily prescription medicines, forgetting to take a pill can happen from time to time. Planning ahead for such schedule-disrupting events as vacations and special events can help you stay on track and minimize any health risks that might result from not “taking as directed.” Doctor’s Advice “It’s really important to take your medication exactly as prescribed, even if you don’t feel different after missing a day or two,” explained Dr. Victoria Losinski, director of pharmacy services at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. “This is especially true for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, because their risk of ending up in the hospital is 2.5 times greater when not following a doctor’s treatment plan.” The mantra “you have to take the medicine for it to work” goes beyond diabetes control. People who don’t take their prescribed high blood pressure medication on a regular basis have a 42 percent higher chance of developing chronic heart failure. And people on high cholesterol medications are twice as likely to develop heart disease if their cholesterol is not under control. What You Can Do To help, here are five tried-and-true tips for strengthening your everyday prescription medication habits: 1. Talk to a pharmacist. Some drugs have very specific instructions on when to take them, whether to take them on an empty stomach, with certain foods or to avoid in conjunction with certain medications. Your pharmacist can help you understand your medications and map a plan to stay on track. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota members can also call the number on the back of their cards and speak with a nurse guide. 2. Write it down. If you’ve got several medications to manage, write down the details to keep them straight. Consider using a small one-page calendar, such as the kind found in a checkbook or available through a downloadable tracker, to mark off that you have taken your meds each day. 3. Get organized. Using a pillbox is a simple low-tech way to make sure you take exactly what you need when you need it. There are also pharmacies, including PillPack, that sort your prescriptions, vitamins and other overthe-counter medicines into dated packets to make taking your meds even easier. You can also ask your pharmacy if it offers a similar program. 4. Set an alarm. Use your smartphone to schedule reminders. If you’re looking for an app, try Rxremind, which can be downloaded for iPhone or for Android. 5. Refill on time. Accessing your pharmacy’s auto-refill program, requesting a 90-day supply and using a mail-order prescription service are all good ways to help make sure you don’t run out and miss your medication. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

FAMILY CYCLING IS AN

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. MEDICAL AUTHORITIES SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT PREDIABETES

HOME SERVICES

OTHER

(NAPSI)—One in three American adults now has prediabetes—a serious condition that often leads to type 2 diabetes. Yet 90 percent of them don’t know it. The good news is that with early diagnosis, prediabetes can be reversed through healthy lifestyle changes. Learning your risk is simple: visit DoIHavePrediabetes.org and take the one-minute risk test.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

What Is Prediabetes? Prediabetes is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough yet to be considered type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes can also lead to other health issues like heart attack and stroke. The key risk factors for prediabetes include being overweight, being physically inactive, having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes, or being over 40 years old. An Urgent Message More than 84 million Americans have prediabetes, and the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled over the past 20 years. Type 2 diabetes prevention is such an urgent need for our nation that two leading health organizations, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have partnered with the Ad Council to raise national awareness. Together, they have built resources that help people know their risk and learn how to reverse prediabetes. Do You Have Prediabetes? Go to DoIHavePrediabetes.org and take a simple one-minute risk test to know where you stand. If you receive a high score, the next step is to confirm the diagnosis with your doctor and ask how to enroll in CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. CDC Programs Can Help With early diagnosis, prediabetes can be reversed—and the best thing people can do is to join the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program. This scientifically proven program is available in person or online across the United States to help people make healthy changes. Trained professionals share ongoing support and tips to help stay on track with healthy eating, physical activity, stress reduction and more. Research shows that through the program, you can lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent (71 percent if you’re over age 60). Learn More: Learn more about prediabetes and find lifestyle tips and links to CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program at www.DoIHavePrediabetes.org.

1. Place chocolate in microwave-safe measuring cup or mug. Heat, covered with waxed paper, in microwave on High 1 to 2 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring occasionally until smooth. 2. Meanwhile, place each topping choice on separate sheet of waxed paper or on individual plates. 3. Holding 1 pretzel rod at a time, dip in melted chocolate, tipping cup to cover about half of rod with chocolate. Allow excess chocolate to drip off pretzel back into cup. Immediately sprinkle coated pretzel with choice of topping. Carefully place coated pretzel rod in pie plate or shallow bowl, leaning uncoated portion on edge. 4. Repeat with remaining pretzels (try to keep pretzels from touching one another in pie plate) and refrigerate about 20 minutes to set coating. FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. Thanks to them with the support of many volunteers and my family, my children and I are safely and happily moved into our new home. Thanksgiving I just finished reading Amanda Dudek’s Hometown Story about Thanksgiving from November 20th and want to thank her and GVPS for sharing such an uplifting and positive message with your readers.

For the birds To those maintenance people in parking lots that chase people down who feed the starving seagulls: Seagulls are scavengers – they actually clean up garbage from parking lots and the environment. I always pick a remote corner to feed them. After they eat bread, Tostitos, and popcorn, there is nothing left to clean up. Man has burned their

trees, and polluted their drinking water with climate change, paved their space and run over them with traffic, and stolen their habitat with commercial development. Half of all-American birds are gone. Yet you threatened to kick me off the property if I fed them. Another man told me it was illegal to feed them. Where is your heart and sense of justice for birds and animals?

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. HEAT THERAPY According to the Merck Manual, a reference book for physicians and patients alike, heat works against inflammation by increasing blood flow and making connective tissues more flexible. Heat also can be used to combat edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the tissues of the body. Upon application, heat can temporarily reduce pain and alleviate stiffness in the joints. Heat also may temporarily relieve muscles spasms. The Cleveland Clinic notes that heat can be effective at relieving pain associated with worn-away cartilage in the joints because it eases chronically stiff joints and relaxes tight muscles. In addition, moist heat can relax painful neck spasms linked to nerves or blood vessels in the head or pain emanating from muscles in the neck. Heat can be applied via hot packs, infrared heat, paraffin baths, and hydrotherapy.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES According to Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

IS IT YOUR TOOTH OR YOUR SINUSES? Sinus infections can cause a runny nose, headaches, pressure, and tooth pain. This is because the sinuses, teeth, and gums all have similar nerves that transmit pain signals to one another. The maxillary sinuses are situated behind the cheekbones on either side of the nose and are the largest sinus cavity. Their size and position make them the most likely to cause tooth pain when they are infected. If your dental pain is caused by a sinus infection, it will lack symptoms of tooth problems such as swollen gums, tooth pain from contact with hot or cold food or drink or items, and swelling in the jaw area. Swelling in the upper cheek area can be caused by tooth and sinus infections.

CURE!!

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

P.S. While sinus infections can cause tooth pain, infections in teeth can also result in a sinus infection.

Questions About COPD ---

Anti-violence and bullying training and education in many Livingston County schools and communities is supported by UWLC.

585-762-4020

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with COPD a year and a half ago and have several questions. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy and doesn’t have a lot of time to spend with me. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, in reasonably good health and exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read about answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. But I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. Lung function falls inexorably over time. In people who have no lung disease, the normal decline with aging is never enough to cause symptoms during normal activity. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Your medication, Trelegy, contains all of these medicines, and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen. An online calculator for prognosis can be found at https:// bit.ly/2N1UEoy. It can be used if you know how far you can walk in six minutes and the results of your breathing test (specifically, the FEV1%).

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Pack the right gear While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily. There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you’d normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors. Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it’s best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
