PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT
Plan your transportation. If a night out entails enjoying a few alcoholic beverages, then arrange for safe transportation home in advance. Utilize a ride-sharing service or taxi company; otherwise, figure out who will be the designated sober driver. Groups of friends may want to pay for the sober driver’s meal as a token of their appreciation.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

Teddy bears got their name in 1902 after President Theodore Roosevelt in a series of events that happened when he went on a hunting trip. While hunting, they happened upon a bear, and President Roosevelt refused to shoot it. The story soon spread all over, and the first stu ed bears were developed by toymakers Morris Michtom in the U.S. and Richard Stei in Germany and they were named ‘Teddy Bears’ after President Roosevelt’s pet name.
Spacefarer bear
The first teddy bear to journey into space is named Magellan T. Bear, which joined the NASA shuttle mission in 1995.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* Save smaller bits of leftover veggies in a large freezer-safe container or bag, in the freezer. When it’s full, make vegetable soup.
* “Be sure you use bathroom fans correctly, turning on to remove steam, but turning off to keep from pumping out heat. This is equally important in the summer, when you pump out valuable cooled air. Many people don’t think of fans this way, and they end up running for hours.”
-- R.D. in Mississippi
* Keep salt or baking soda by the stove for small quick cleanups. A good dose of salt will stop an egg from running all over the place. Dip a damp cloth in baking soda for a handy scrub. Although a handful of either might work in a pinch on a small flare-up on the stove, you should have a fire extinguisher close by for fires.
* “I used to comb through my last year’s calendar for important yearly dates when transferring them to the new year’s calendar. This year I have gotten smart. At the end of the month, before turning the page, I have highlighted the items I would want to put in next year’s calendar. When I look back, I will not have to search through all the entries for the good stuff.” -- U.L. in Ohio
* “I just spent a lot of time cleaning my mother’s bathtub in a longneglected bathroom. To keep it from mildewing, I used paste wax to protect the walls. You can use car wax for the same purpose, and many people know about this helpful tip. But I wanted to add a caution: walls only. Especially if you have an elderly resident (or a child), do not wax the inside of the tub, and make sure to have a nonslip mat in the tub at all times.” -- A daughter in Oregon

DID YOU KNOW?
According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Thank You!
A local catering company surprised us again with delicious food. Thank you! Your next-door neighbors are most appreciative.
Wonderful Wife
Thank you to my wonderful wife for the sacrifices you have made to take care of our two children. You have paused your career as a standout teacher – twice – to focus on raising them, currently our little girl in her first year of life. You are an outstanding mother, wife, and friend. Everyone whose life you have touched is fortunate, especially me. Life is undoubtedly hard right now with two young ones, but the messes, poor sleep, and frustrations are worth it. The days are long but the years are short. We are blessed with two healthy happy children, a roof over our heads, and stability. Through all the challenges I look forward to moments big and small: cooking, Adirondack vacations, playing outside with the kids, family hikes, silly time, and couch time (plus Trivia and Even Exchange in the Penny Saver). I love you and keep your head up. I’m glad I started a conversation with you – the tall, beautiful brunette from the environmental club – at that party back in college 16 years ago.
Avon Inn Angel!
On January 12, 2023 our ladies golf league gathered for an "after-the holiday" get together at the Avon Inn. One of our golfers fell into medical distress and we would all like to thank Angel, our bartender/server for her quick actions to get our friend comfortable, cooled down and cleared the way for the emergency workers. Your assistance and calmness were much appreciated.
Disappointed
and Sad
I am disappointed in some people. It is sad. I was at [Business Name] and got a cart that a good Samaritan left so I in return left it unhooked for someone else. At that time a lady came out and I watched her while I was putting my bag in the car. She took her cart AND the one I left, hooked them, and in turn got the quarters. I always leave my cart if I get one or return a cart if it was left and I used it. I try to do something nice and someone has the nerve to do that. It's not right. Makes me disappointed and sad that someone would do this.

Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.
Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS
During pregnancy, hormonal changes (increased estrogen and progesterone) make a woman more susceptible to gingivitis, or gum disease. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, which can cause soreness and bleeding. According to the CDC, pregnancy gingivitis affects as many as 75 percent of pregnant women. Hormonal changes can lead to gum inflammation because of the body’s decreased ability to fight plaque bacteria coupled with increased blood flow to the gums. While there’s no evidence that shows mild gingivitis is harmful to the fetus or causes premature birth or miscarriages, gingivitis may lead to periodontitis (advanced gum disease), which has been linked to preterm birth and low birth weight. It can also lead to tooth lossifnottreated.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES
Sprains and strains: Sprains are injuries to ligaments, or the bands of tough, fibrous tissue that connect two or more bones at a joint. Strains impact a muscle or a tendon, which connects muscles to bones. Clinical research has linked acute strains and sprains to improper warm-up before sports, fatigue and previous injuries. Preparticipation conditioning and stretching can help reduce the risk of injury.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bariatric Surgery Can Be Considered to Keep Weight Off
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had a BMI over 40 for the last 20 years, and I have not been able to lose weight or keep the weight off. My doctor prescribed Ozempic, which is helping, but as soon as I stop, all the weight creeps back on in a few weeks. I was always wary of surgery for weight loss, but recent studies seem to indicate better long-term health outcomes. What are your thoughts? -- S.O.
ANSWER: Medical or surgical treatment for weight loss is not right for every person who is overweight. Many people take medications in the class called glucagonlike peptide-1 agonists, which includes semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda and Victoza) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). But these medicines have the potential for harm, and an individual’s risks, especially conditions that can be affected by being severely overweight or obese, need to be carefully considered. Surgery has far more risks than medication and requires the most careful consideration before receiving a recommendation of bariatric surgery, of which there are many types.
I am much more likely to refer a patient to one of my colleagues in bariatric surgery when a patient is very obese and when there are clear medical issues that I can expect to get better with surgery. These medical issues can include diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Most of the time, these conditions can be well-managed without bariatric surgery, but sometimes management is very difficult. In this case, consideration of bariatric surgery is worthwhile. Bariatric surgery is never the first choice in weight management. A comprehensive lifestyle intervention -- with an individualized diet (ideally recommended by an expert such as a registered dietician or nutritionist), moderate exercise (with a goal of 150 minutes per week minimum), and regular meetings to help keep a person on track -- is the right place to start. It is effective for many people if they maintain the behaviorial changes.
I have been prescribing some of my patients with the GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medications with good results, but as you mention, if you stop taking them, they stop working. Unless you make a dramatic change to your lifestyle that you can keep up, the weight will return.
Bariatric surgery does have very strong long-term weightloss data, as well as dramatic reductions in diabetes when used for the appropriate people.

Cats and Colds
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: is winter, a lot of my family has had colds and u. Can my cat catch a cold from us? -- Darlene, via email
DEAR DARLENE: Cats don’t catch colds directly from humans, but they can su er from upper respiratory infections that are just as uncomfortable.
A number of viral and bacterial infections can make your cat sick. Some of these, such as FVR (feline rhinotracheitis) and FVC (feline calicivirus) can be prevented by making sure your cat gets an annual checkup and vaccinations. An underlying health condition also can make your cat more susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Again, regular checkups and shots can keep it healthy.
What symptoms does a cat with a URI have? It may be sni ing and sneezing, along with a clear or cloudy discharge from the eyes or nose. Your cat also may have little to no appetite and might be lethargic.
Contact the veterinarian right away if your cat has any of these symptoms. e vet will want to examine your cat to con rm what kind of URI it has. Use a cat carrier so other cats in the waiting room won’t be exposed, and to keep your cat safe.
Follow the vet’s instructions on caring for your sick cat. You may be given a prescription, and you will be asked to keep the cat comfortable and warm, and to try to get it to drink water and eat some food. Dry food may be a turno , but it may eat a little wet food. If your cat won’t eat or drink, contact the vet again -- an IV may be needed to keep it hydrated.

DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

DID YOU KNOW? A study from the Gap Year Association found that 77 percent of students who take a gap year do so between high school and college. Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING
(NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges.
When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind.
Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more.
Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves.
The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

A NEW SEASON IS SPRINGING UP AT SPRINGDALE FARM
animals and agriculture and how they a ect our daily lives. Everyone comes away knowing more a er fun at the farm.
New animals are coming this spring. Keep an eye on the farm’s social media for updates. Carson says animals thrive and are happier when there is more than one kind in a speci ed area, so this farm works well for the animals. Carson adds, “Goats need to be together. It was interesting integrating them back with each other a er being apart for so long [with the pandemic]. eir feisty personalities came out while getting reacquainted.”
Six goats currently live on the farm. Laverne was born there. Mama was born on the farm, and her kids were born o -site during the pandemic. eir coloring is snow-white, which inspired the names Anna and Elsa a er the Frozen characters. Kids who visit get a kick out of those names. e other two goats grew up together: Panda is black and white, and Clementine is brown and white. e goats have fun personalities; they love to ‘kid’ around.
I was delighted.
James Adams purchased Springdale Farm in 1876, and his family owned it for nearly a century. At that time, it was primarily a fruit farm. His son, Myron, took over and converted it to a dairy farm because of an ice storm that hit in the 1930s, damaging the fruit trees. e Adams family sold Springdale to another farmer in 1960. en, in 1993, Monroe County acquired the farm to save it from a permanent shutdown.
Since then, Heritage Christian Services has operated the farm, making amazing improvements, such as adding a playground, pavilion, and more. It has a lot to o er families and the community. Director Debra Carson, says, “It’s a great place for people of all ages. ere’s something for everybody.”
e 200-acre property is an extension of Northampton Park. Visitors may walk the trails, have fun with the animals, and explore the outdoors. Balcony Point is also available to rent for events.
What makes this farm unique is that Heritage Christian Serviceshastwoadultdayprogramson-site,allowingindividuals with developmental challenges to learn job skills and work with other people. ey help with the farm’s daily maintenance and play a huge role in the community.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Carson, who said that during the pandemic, they shut down and had to ‘farm out’ the animals. ey brainstormed new ideas and experiences for when the shutdown was over and have implemented them now since reopening.
Springdale is an educational farm. ey expand beyond school trips and tours, and now every visitor may learn about
Misty is a rescued cat who enjoys her new home with all her farm friends.
I asked if they would add any other pigs a er the passing of their mascot pig, Ricky. Ricky’s happy snorts, tail wiggles, and perky personality will be missed and fondly remembered. Carson said they are working on adding two brother pigs to the farm. Stay tuned on social media.
Come out for the Sheep Shearing event on April 29th from 10 am to 3 pm. is event includes a weaving demonstration and agricultural activities, arts and cra s, a petting zoo, a reptile show, shing, a bounce house, and food trucks. Visitors may enjoy all there is to do and see on the farm.
Donations keep Springdale Farm running and they use social media to show how donations are used to keep the farm going.
As Carson says, “It’s a great experience. It’s where people can come and create memories.” I certainly can attest to that. I will treasure the memories I created with my family at Springdale Farm. It’s a great place to go and talk to the animals like Dr. Dolittle, no matter your age. Animals are good listeners. ey are waiting to welcome you.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN
Change your reading habits. E-reader enthusiasts may have access to millions of books at their fingertips, but that access could come at a steep cost. Distractions abound when reading books on tablets, smartphones and e-readers. The internet is only a swipe or two away when reading e-books, while print books provide no such access to the internet.Tablets and e-readers employ the he same notification system as smartphones, so readers who insist on going the digital route can turn those notifications off before cuddling up with a good book. But that might not be enough, as readers can still visit the home screen of their devices and begin browsing the internet. Print books are ideal for those who want to read with as little device-related distractions as possible.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles
Lowering Our Drug Costs
I got a shock the other day when I went to the pharmacy to pick up the latest re ll of my three drugs and realized that the pharmacy assistant had neglected to run it through GoodRx, the program that helps reduce the price of our drugs. Once he did that, the cost dropped signi cantly.
It made me realize just how much other seniors are paying for the drugs we need to stay healthy. ere are ways to cut those costs. It just takes a little work and a lot of monitoring on our part to make sure it happens.
As mentioned, there’s GoodRx (www.goodrx.com), which I’ve used for several years. eir website isn’t the easiest to use, but a er you try it once, you’ll appreciate being able to cut the costs of your drugs every time you need a re ll.
ere are other ways as well:
RxAssist (www.rxassist.org) has programs that are run by the pharmaceutical companies to help those who can’t a ord their prescriptions. If your drugs cost more than $10, present your RxAssist card to get the lowest price. Check the website for a long directory of patient assistance programs. Beware that some programs involve a small fee to be a member and many have eligibility requirements.
Consider Walmart pharmacies for their generic program. A 30-day prescription will cost $4 and only $10 for a 90-day prescription. Not all generic drugs will qualify for those prices, but it’s worth making a call to your local Walmart pharmacy to nd out if your drugs are on that list.
NeedyMeds website (www.needymeds.org) was started by a physician in 1997 to help gather information about reduced drug and health care costs. e website says over $337 million has been saved so far. And nally, check the prices at Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs (costplusdrugs.com). For some drugs, this one is the lowest of all.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS
(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.
One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.
TheGovernor’sSchoolalsoservesasaresourcetoallteachersandstudents in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students.
This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the communityandinnovativeapproachtoartseducationandskillsdevelopment with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS
Look
recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.
Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.
Stock your pantry with the basics to make cooking quicker and easier. From condiments and canned goods to seasonings and spices, keeping the essentials on-hand means less time scrambling for a quick run to the store and more moments spent at home. (Family Features)

WORKING
Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
Write things down. A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming. The physical task of writing things down and crossing items off the list one-by-one can help you sail through tasks effectively. If you’re a mobile person, jot the list down on the notes function of a smartphone or use a task app that syncs with calendar functions.
