Pen-A-Poem CONTEST WINNER Lawrence R. Berger

Hungry, Hungry Hearing Aids

They screech like baby birds calling for their mother Feeding time They have worked hard all day Bringing me the joyous news from the radio: 19 cases in this county 105 cases in that The entire country is trying to "flatten the curve" As the world watches The stock market crashed Food is getting hard to find And we're just ending week one. But My electric bill is paid And the hungry, hungry hearing aids Settle down like swaddled infants when I put them in the charger Enjoy my little ones For tomorrow The dance begins again.

Our thanks to all who entered and all who voted. To read poems from the finalists go to gvpennysaver.com

• Check your tread to beat the snow : Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are ready for the w inter conditions before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

PREVENTING SEPSIS WITH GOOD ORAL HYGIENE Sepsis develops when an infection turns on the body and produces a lifethreatening response. Sepsis can spread infection to other parts of the body like the heart, brain, joints, and other organs. Any kind of infection can lead to sepsis. Our mouths contain high levels of bacteria, and infections in the mouth can cause bleeding and openings where bacteria can take hold and spread. Tooth abscesses and infections can occur because of an unknown cavity or cracked tooth, cuts in your gums or other parts of the mouth, and, rarely, after dental work. The best way to prevent sepsis from a mouth infection is to follow good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily, flossing daily, and scheduling regular dental visits. Choose a family dentist who has a sincere interest in their patients’ complete health and who is up-to-date on the latest oral health care issues.

If you are looking for just such a dentist, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. At our state-of-the-art office, all dental problems are dealt with efficiently, effectively, and compassionately. And any medical problems noticed during a dental exam will be discussed with your other health care providers if you so choose. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we offer complete gentle, dental care for all members of your family. P.S. To help prevent sepsis, high-risk patients should receive prophylactic and preventative antibiotics before a dental procedure, similar to people with certain heart conditions or artificial joints.

Sudden Foot Pain After a Concert Becomes Debilitating

Page 12

a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. Elevator etiquette Please, when using an elevator, don’t stand directly right in front of the door and then try to rush in; there are people inside who need to get out first. This happens so much. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.

Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).

Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

active senior living Here’s a Tip * From L.D.W. in Illinois: “When I have a recipe, I put all the ingredients on the counter, and as I use each one, I put it away. My daughter and daughter-in-law like the idea, as they at one time or another forget an item.” I like that one, too, L.D.W. SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

Byron-Bergen 6th Graders Explore Local Heritage with the RBTL Annie Landmark Project BY SUZIE WELLS

B

yron-Bergen 6th grade English classes participated in the Rochester Broadway Theater League Arts Partners Program, connecting schools to the RBTL with opportunities to see a live musical while making connections in the classroom to expand students’ understanding of themes such as musical plot and character experiences. This season, in conjunction with the production of Annie at the RBTL, the Arts Partners suggested the Annie Landmark project. Students researched local landmarks, exploring their community as Annie explores the landmarks of New York City. According to English teacher, Alyson Tardy, students chose a landmark, researched its history and why it is unique and important for the community, wrote a research report about their findings, and crafted a visual representation of the landmark to share with the school community. Some landmarks chosen were LeRoy’s Jell-O Museum, Rochester’s Public Market, the Kodak building, the underground railroad spaces across the city, Six Flags, Seneca Park Zoo, Genesee Country Village & Museum, Susan B Anthony House, and even Niagara Falls. The class learned and shared about so much local history and culture in this project.

for some landmarks such as Kodak or the George Eastman House, modifying articles geared towards adults for the sixth graders to use. But besides that, Tardy says the project was an incredible hit, allowing students to dive into authentic research, honing skills in a real-life, actionable kind of way. For many of the students, the field trip to see Annie the Musical at the RBTL’s Auditorium Theater in Rochester was their first experience seeing a live show, so Tardy found the field trip to be such a memorable opportunity. “Working with Arts Partners has been an amazing experience to help my students build a greater appreciation for the performing arts,” she says. Holly Valentine, Education Coordinator at RBTL, helped with lesson materials and coordinating the field trip, and Tardy says the partnership was extremely rewarding for all.

Along with the landmarks and their connections to the area, Tardy says students enjoyed learning about iconic local historical figures such as Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, known well beyond Rochester. Tardy says she loved “allowing our students to have the opportunity to research and learn more about local landmarks in our area that they possibly have never had the chance to visit or explore. It’s important for me to seek opportunities to help my students step outside of the four walls of our classroom to learn about the unique and diverse people and places around us.” She says the students really enjoyed exploring local landmarks and sharing their findings with the research report and landmark mural showing the array of key places and people. Tardy says one of her favorite moments of this project was watching students create and design the mural together, pulling together the excitement and mood of the season with a snowy background that allowed the landmarks to pop. Tardy and her colleagues faced some challenges finding grade-level appropriate articles
