585-682-3219 DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve read that pets can keep seniors healthy, through reducing stress, etc. How does that work? -- Joel P., Fort Myers, Fla.
Automotive ____________________17 Body & Mind ____________________18
DEAR JOEL: Researchers have found that seniors who own pets have a reduced rate of stress-related ailments, so they’ve theorized that having an animal companion helps seniors feel less alone and somewhat empowered as they care for a cat, dog, fish or other pet. The unconditional love and affection that pets provide can help their owners feel needed and important, and can help to enhance their quality of life. So, the simple act of caring for a pet can create a longer, happier life for many people. But there are more benefits to pet ownership. Owners are more likely to interact with other animal lovers. They tend to exercise more than pet-less people -- especially dog owners, who must take their pooches for frequent walks. Of course, if a senior doesn’t want a dog or cat, the idea shouldn’t be pushed. Owners must be able to care for, walk and feed their pets, and provide training and activities. Not everyone can meet these requirements. There also are financial considerations, such as regular veterinary care, food and medicine. An alternative to owning a pet is to visit one (or have one visit) occasionally. There are organizations across the United States that sponsor pet visits for seniors who love animals but cannot care for one full-time. These visits help provide some of the health benefits of pet ownership to those who otherwise would not receive them. If nothing else, take time out to say hello to the neighbor’s dog, or spend time with relatives and their pets. They’ll love the attention, and you’ll love the stress relief that pets can provide.

USING CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES The AKC urges dog owners who plan to crate train their puppies to find appropriately-sized crates before they begin training. Crates should be just large enough for dogs to lie down, stand up and turn around. Dogs won’t embrace crates that are too small, and crates that are too big will give dogs the impression that they can use one corner to defecate and use the rest for sleep or play. That’s the wrong message to send, as dogs should never be encouraged to relieve themselves in their crates.

The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell.

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

S E V RA Supporting LVOY Sincere thanks to everyone who came out for Literacy Volunteers Ontario + Yates 20th Annual Adult Spelling Bee! Teams, sponsors, and donors stepped up on Feb 6th for a fun event to support services for adults from Ontario and Yates Counties who receive literacy tutoring, help with English, and assistance preparing for a high school equivalency test. Thank you! Good People in Genesee County On February 14th in the Batavia Walmart, I was reminded that there are still good people. I was doing a bit of extra shopping. When I got in line to check out, I noticed a young man with only a few items versus my pretty full cart. I stated he could go ahead of me. He replied, "Thank you" and explained he had been working crazy overtime and just wanted to get a few items to surprise his woman. In the meantime, a woman with a little one in tow, got in line behind me with literally three items. I stated for her to go ahead of me as it was going to be a bit for me to unload my cart. As she was placing her three items on the conveyor belt, the young man was finishing his order. As he was leaving, he stated to the cashier "Give that $40.00 I have coming back to that woman right there." That woman was me! I expressed my thanks as I was not expecting that. So, as it says "One good turn deserves another. "It definitely applies here. Blessings are everywhere! Help During a White Out This is for the kind couple in the red pickup who led me out of a terrible white-out on River Rd. on Feb. 19th. I was in desperate need of help, so I prayed, and God sent you! You truly represent the goodness in all of us, and I hope the kindness you showed me will come back to you. I will always be grateful that you came along that day.
Choose One! You can’t have it both ways! So you’re saving the environment by not having plastic bags used? Smart choice! Okay instead use paper bags. Wait. You have to cut down trees for paper, but you don’t want that either. So now what? By the way California doesn’t ban plastic bags! So, now you go to the store in your half plastic car to buy your milk in a plastic jug. Don’t forget the bread in a plastic bag. Crackers, cereal, cookies are also in what? You guessed it: plastic. People think as long as it’s not in my backyard; I’m saving the world! Reality check: you are the problem. Uncommon Clarity The persons who posted “Common Concerns” and “We have Control” both made good points. First, we have to stop denying global warming - It’s happening. But its main cause is the planet’s actions (known as “Precession of the Equinoxes”) in which the earth moves from hot to cold and back again every 26,000 years. Has industrialization accelerated the warming? Probably. And there are things we can do, like reducing emissions and conserving energy. Windmills and solar panels may be unsightly to some, but oil rigs, pipelines, refineries, and power plants are far more unsightly, and add to our pollution. There should not be any plastic in our lakes, oceans, or other water ways. We can stop throwing our garbage onto the roadside. We can use paper wherever possible instead of plastic. These are things over which we have control. None of us is willing to give up electricity, or our cars (especially in a rural area), so we have to work to minimize our energy usage. Disappointed I am tired of trying to give my money to the local restaurant businesses around me. Every time I call, I’m told they’re out of this or that. I’m fully aware that Covid has affected every aspect of our lives, and the restaurant industry is no exception, but it’s been 2+ years. Adapt, whether it be by paying more for new hires or getting a vendor that will supply your ingredients. I grow weary of these excuses. I don’t want to go to a fast food place. Also, you’re [foolish] for thinking the environment doesn’t matter. Global warming is not fake news.

From Webster to Africa & Beyond BY DP DUNN
R
ich Comins of Webster, NY, is a quiet man with salt and pepper hair and a twinkle in his eye. He has made friends and changed lives on every continent, except perhaps Antarctica. Rich is a small but mighty link in a chain of Rotarians that deliver ‘mobility devices’ all around the world. What’s a mobility device? Examples include crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, leg braces, baby joggers and strollers, bike strollers, and prosthetic limbs. Rich collects these items for distribution overseas, at no cost to the recipient, through an organization called Crutches 4 Africa, whose mission is to “Collect, ship and distribute mobility devices.” Now if you’ve visited Hegedorn’s Market in Webster, you might have noticed a large plastic barrel near the store’s main entrance. On that barrel is a sign “CRUTCHES 4 AFRICA.” Maybe you’ve seen a couple of pairs of crutches, or a walker or two in the bin, ready to travel. Here’s their story. The whole Crutches 4 Africa operation was started by David Talbot of Boulder, Colorado. Talbot endured polio as a child. He recovered, after surgery and much rehabilitation and exercise. Although he became an athlete in high school and college, he always remembered that painful illness. Dave traveled internationally, and as he traveled, he realized, as many travelers do, that Americans enjoyed so much. It’s scandalous what we throw away. Dave saw a need, especially in Africa, and took action to make a difference. Medical mobility equipment was, and continues to be, in great demand to improve the lives of so many people with temporary or lifelong disabilities as well as many victims of accidents or war or illness. In 2018, Rich Comins attended an International Rotary conference in Toronto. Rich and Talbot met, and a series of conversations ensued. The next thing you know, as Rich tells the story, “Phil Smith visited the Webster chapter and presented an informational program about Crutches 4 Africa. The Ontario and Walworth clubs had already begun because of the discussion between Mark Wyse and myself in Toronto. I later presented to the Greece Rotary where Bill & Helen Gormont joined in the cause.” All agreed this was a worthwhile project. They began collecting, storing, and shipping a wide array of mobility devices all around the world. In addition to the African continent, equipment has now been shipped to Mexico and Mongolia, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Thailand, Guatemala, and even Christmas Island. Merry Christmas, Christmas Islanders!
charge.” How many? “Over 171,000 items shipped (and lives changed)!” according to their website. When winter releases her icy grip, and shipping containers become available (right now, they’re at a premium), three containers worth are ready to go. “Hopefully we’ll make shipments this April, May, and June,” said Rich. Rich also passed along the following tips for those wishing to donate: 1. Don’t toss; DONATE, please! Your donation will change a life. Crutches 4 Africa helps children like 2. “Used but Usable” this young boy stay mobile! equipment only please; minor repairs are OK. 3. No electric scooters, please. Ideally, such a space would be 400 El Salvador, Vietnam, sq. ft. or larger, secure, accessible, Cambodia, India, and safe from the weather (no leaks). Puzzle Answers This Week INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS SNAPPY WORDS
(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS
585-343-5604 “Where you’re a name, not just a number”
(NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

Make Your Concrete Floor Look Better Than New!
If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. AUTOMOTIVE

The Truth About Fasting Before Blood Tests ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is a registered

nurse, and tells me that when getting blood tests, it is not necessary to fast eight to 12 hours even though my doctor says to do so. Four hours is enough, she claims. Is this true, or is my daughter trying to be a doctor, if you know what I mean? --- L.C. ANSWER: I probably agree with your daughter the nurse more than I do with your doctor in this case. Most routine blood testing does not require fasting. There is controversy about whether cholesterol testing is best done fasting or not: Most recent evidence suggests that fasting is not necessary. However, many physicians still continue to use fasting levels, as that is what they are used to. Nonfasting numbers may reflect the true state of risk to the arteries more so than fasting levels. A few seldom-ordered tests, such as insulin levels, may need to be drawn precisely a certain period of time after feeding to be able to interpret them. In most cases, your daughter is probably right that prolonged fasting is unnecessary. I still recommend following your doctor’s orders. Your daughter is providing you with up-to-date medical knowledge. Any nurse or doctor should do the same.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it true that all orange juice is
WHY FLOSS? Daily flossing is essential to proper dental hygiene. Forgoing flossing can promote plaque between teeth and along the gumline. Over time, increased plaque on tooth enamel increases the risk of developing cavities. Regular flossing removes small food particles and plaque build-up and aids in preventing gingivitis and gum diseases. It also reduces halitosis (bad breath), the result of decaying food trapped between teeth and gums. Proper oral hygiene not only benefits teeth and gums, it may also benefit heart health, too. A 2019 study showed that participants who practiced high oral hygiene standards also had decreased risk of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Professional dental cleanings every six months are highly recommended to monitor and maintain overall dental health.
And while it is true that brushing and flossing may take the lead in the fight against food and plaque build-up, the main causes of decay and gum disease, it is equally important to perform these oral hygiene routines correctly for maximum results. Your family dentist can show you the most effective way to brush and floss your teeth. Remember, a sure investment in your future is a visit to your dentist today. This column is brought to you in the interest of better dental health by BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre. Phone: 585.343.4246. P. S. Flossing stimulates blood flow to the gums, which helps fight bacteria growth in and under the gums.

dangerous except organic? I heard on a radio show something about food’s having been contaminated by Roundup. The man said, “It’s in our orange juice.” It was said (I think) that only organic was safe. What do you think about this orange juice issue? -- J.J.V.S. ANSWER: I read the report showing that all orange juice brands tested positive for glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide, but one that is never applied to trees, in organic or conventional farming. The levels in the report, which was not published in a peer-reviewed journal, are extremely low, 3 to 17 parts per billion. The Environmental Protection Agency allowable level in citrus fruit is 500 parts per billion. The risk from glyphosate in orange juice is negligible. I don’t recommend large amounts of any type of fruit juice due to sugar content, which is a bigger threat than glyphosate, in my opinion. Stick to a glass a day. ***

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Beware of Ice The local television weather guy made an announcement recently that was, I think, meant to be uplifting. He said, “And winter is now half over!” Instead, I took it the other way: We still have half of this winter to get through. My main complaint this year is ... ice. It’s sneaky, it’s everywhere, it’s apparently invisible in the right circumstances, and yes, it’s slick. There I was, hauling a load of groceries out of the back of the car, having picked them up curbside from the store and arriving home after dark. One of the bags had fallen over and spilled its contents, requiring me to bend over and lean forward at the same time to retrieve the items that had rolled. Unbeknownst to me, my foot was on a piece of ice. I did not fall, but I did twist my leg in a way that legs are not meant to be twisted. Within an hour the pain hit. By Day 3 I was wondering if I’d broken something. Day 4 was a bit better, and I knew I was on the mend ... if only I could better plan my trips up and out of the recliner to fetch something instead of making multiple trips through the house for Kindle, water bottle, TV remote and more. Worse, I suppose, was that the cat was upset that she wasn’t allowed on my lap during those days. She sat, with a hurt expression, across the room from me for four days. I think there are multiple lessons to be learned from my brief foray into pain and incapacity, but the most important one is this: Schedule curbside grocery pickup for daylight hours. Don’t arrive home in the dark in the winter if there’s the slightest chance of ice. It will find you. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF Cochlear implants The NDC notes that cochlear implants are electronic devices that are surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss. The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants.

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields. Page 28

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Snow will better slide off a shovel that has been sprayed with furniture polish.” -- T.L. in Minnesota * Here’s an old tip, but a good one: Before going away on vacation, put a couple of ice cubes in a plastic baggie, and set it at the front of the freezer. When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. * To temporarily get a winter frost effect on a window, use this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your windowpane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don’t want to be clear but also don’t want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water. * “If you get a residue inside your coffee cups when they go through the dishwasher, it might be time to give your machine a once-over. In the meantime, spray the insides of the coffee cups with a bleachbased cleaner like 409 just before your turn it on. That should help.” -- E.T. in Michigan * Cut your kitchen sponge in half, or even thirds. You can clean just as well with a smaller sponge, and you will extend its life, saving you money. A smaller sponge dries out more quickly, too. EMPLOYMENT
