PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. For Cats, Keyboards Are Just Unbearable

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the article on the keyboard-loving cat. My cats often react as if they’re disturbed by many specific sounds: voices from my phone speaker, noise from the radio or iPad, or clicking from typing on the keyboard. My cats are uncomfortable and confused. I believe that the sounds are not pleasant to them. When they paw at the phone screen or at me, I think it’s an attempt to stop, control or try to understand these noises that are bothering them. I’ve found that if I wear earbuds when using my cellphone or iPad, my cats don’t react. I silenced the “clicky” sounds when writing a text message on my phone. When I need to type, I put the cats in another room with a tasty treat to hold them until I’m finished. Our kitties are trying to adjust to our lifestyle, with all the technology we use today, and much of it is antithetical to their way of being! We need to compromise a bit and make adjustments that help them to be more comfortable. Thank you for your informative column each week -- Patricia D.W., via email DEAR PATRICIA: What a great observation! Most of us think that when a cat walks across our keyboard, they are just seeking attention. But it may be something more. With their keen hearing, all that clickety-clacking may be driving them nuts -- and they’re jumping onto the keyboard to put a stop to it. Your solution speaks to the importance of observing our pets and their behavior to learn what is normal for them versus what makes them anxious or annoyed. Observation can give us the answer to many problem behaviors. Send your pet care and training tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

We Care About

We make your smile our number one priority!

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

NO NEEDLES, NO DRILLS, NO STRESS Ask anyone, from children to their grandparents, why they do not like going to the dentist and they will likely tell you “because of the needles and drills.” However, microdentistry and air abrasion are changing dental experiences today, by not only eliminating the need for drills and anesthesia, but also by preventing the loss of healthy tooth material that drilling usually causes. Air abrasion uses air and an abrasive powder to remove only the decaying portion of a tooth. Once the decayed material has been removed, the cavity is filled with bonding material and sealed to prevent more decay. The goal is to do this as early as possible, so the least amount of tooth enamel is lost.

We are constantly on the lookout for ways to keep our patients happy, through innovative technology and techniques to comfortable surroundings that help our patients relax in a pleasant atmosphere. What has been keeping you from keeping on top of your dental profile? Anxiety? Apprehension? Those are relics of the past at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre, where we are committed to providing gentle dental care of the highest standards. Remember, a healthy smile lasts a lifetime. Call us at 585.343.4246.

P.S. Even though microdentistry often involves more than one appointment, the cost is usually less than that of a regular cavity restoration.

Thanks for the rescue! kind Thank you so much to my veryy kind tire neighbor for digging my front tire out when I accidentally drove into the mud. We really would have stayed stuck without your help. Thanks again! – Your new neighbor, Amanda COVID silver linings Got some long-standing chores done fixing up the house and yard, that I never had time for. I have become a better, smarter shopper. Less traffic on the roads. Fewer airplanes too. More animal sounds can be heard. Wildlife has been free to thrive and came back into our neighborhoods, great for the grandkids to see. Spent more time with the kids and grandkids. Do not have to wear makeup anymore, mask covers it up, great for a

teenager with acne embarrassment. Also, masks keep your face warmer in the wintertime. I kind of like the 6’ rule. fewer flu cases, and pink eye and all kinds of contagious stuff avoided. Never liked a shopping cart bumping my heels from behind anyways. Clean shopping carts are wonderful. Was able to let my hair turn gray naturally. Sweet Christmas ornament I want to thank the anonymous person who sent me the cute little stuffed dog Christmas ornament in the mail on December 22nd. It made my day. It was so sweet. I have put all other ornaments away but have left this adorable ornament out. I smile every time I see it! Thank you again! Honoring Treaties I am so glad that President Biden is honoring the rights of the Lakota Nation by respecting their sovereignty in stopping the Keystone XXL pipeline through their native lands. What a fight they have had! As a newcomer to Canandaigua, it has been most

impressive for me that a treaty is signed yearly with the City Officials and the native people of this area: the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Nation). What a respectful and demonstrative example you are to these First Nations and to so many other outsiders! While so many other native peoples who are spread out across this country have been so demoralized by unkept treaties, the Canandaigua community shows its high ideals to the ancestors of this great nation, whose example became the precursor to our Constitution.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked. (NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made. Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child who lost his hands to severe infection. All have had their lives transformed. These procedures are called “Vascularized Composite Allograft” organ transplants, or VCA transplants. They are composed of multiple types of tissue. With a hand transplant, for example, bones, blood vessels, nerves and skin must all be attached to the remaining arm. So many tissues, however, make VCA transplants extremely complex. The surgery requires the involvement of dozens of surgeons and other medical professionals and can take 16 hours or more. Recovery is also demanding for patients; rehabilitation can be a full-time job for one to two years. Yet, the results are life changing. VCA transplants can restore abilities and independence in ways that artificial limbs and reconstructive surgery cannot. Just consider the difference a working hand with moving fingers and a sense of touch could make. It can mean the ability to take care of oneself, work, drive and play. Face transplants enable recipients to rejoin society, often ending isolation and depression. VCA and traditional organ transplants are the same in some respects. Criteria for matching donors and recipients include the need for compatible blood and tissue types. However, VCA requires matching for additional features such as skin tone, body size and hair color. Gender may also be taken into consideration. A commonly asked question about face transplants is whether the recipient will look like the donor. The answer is yes and no. Yes, skin characteristics such as moles, freckles and scars will transfer to the recipient. However, because the recipient’s underlying bone structure is apt to be different from the donor’s, resemblance will likely be minimal. Like with kidneys, livers and other organs, there is a national waiting list for VCA transplants that matches donors with potential recipients. However, enrolling as an organ donor on a state or national registry does not mean you’re authorizing VCA donation. Your family would make the decision about VCA donation after your death. You can learn more at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Page 9

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles New World, New Ways of Getting Things Done We’re in a whole new world now, and unfortunately it looks like it’s not returning to normal anytime soon. So many things have changed, and we need to make some adjustments to how we take care of ourselves. Timing: Whatever you need to do, do it earlier than you think you should. If you’re going to apply for Social Security, don’t wait until the last minute. Staffing might be lower than normal, with fewer workers to take up the slack. If you need an appointment, such as for an oil change for your car, do it sooner than you normally would, for the same reason. If you’ve been ordering groceries for pickup or delivery, you might notice a renewed slowdown in available time slots as stores, in many cases, have fewer clerks. Taking care of business: Even if you eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, don’t assume you can get one just by walking in. Make an appointment. Ask about parking and physical distancing. Although the shot is free to all Americans, bring your insurance card to help the provider pay for administering the vaccine. Be proactive: Do you know when your credit card expires? In the past you were likely sent a new one just before it expired, with instructions to cut up the old one. Now, with quite a few things slipping through the cracks, you might not notice your card has expired until you try to pay for a grocery order. Check your card and anything else with an expiration date, including the date of the tag renewal for your vehicle. (Note: I learned the hard way that my state is no longer sending out notices of tag expiration.)

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Caledonia Library Renovations and Expansion Highlight Importance of Community Libraries BY AMANDA DUDEK

F

or centuries, libraries have long been regarded as bastions of learning and education, and the Caledonia Library, affectionally referred to as the “stone library,” is no exception. The Caledonia Library Association has been updating and renovating its existing building and is set to finish this first phase of its update and expansion plan this spring. These extensive and needful efforts, coupled with the nation’s current social atmosphere, have only served to highlight the importance of libraries in our modern world. The Caledonia Library, an historic site, was built around 1826 by General Gad Blakeslee, featuring load bearing stones from a local quarry. Throughout the years, the building housed a store, an apothecary, a bank, a post office, and gas company offices. In 1910, the Ladies Circulating Library purchased the residence, making use of the entire building around 1919. Always civic-minded, the community utilized the library for the Red Cross during WWI and WWII. As a structure nearly 200 years in age, the need for updates was pressing. One of the most essential updates was the asbestos removal and abatement. “The asbestos abatement was a lengthy project, and the library was closed for a significant period of time for safety,” said library board member, Dick Thomas. “This was a more complex situation than usual. For example, there was asbestos tape on the inside of ductwork which then had to be completely removed from the existing library because it could become a public health issue over time. We are very pleased that we took the extra time and money to completely remove all asbestos.” The abatement work resulted in new floors and carpets, as well. The library also updated and expanded its electrical system to respond to the increase in technology and electrical devices, hopefully eliminating computer cords run across high traffic areas and overloaded circuit breakers. The library’s back windows were replaced, and its pipes and fixtures were updated. New bathrooms, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, are planned for the new addition. Its stone walls were re-pointed by a father-and-son masonry team to address crumbling mortar, ensuring integrity while keeping moisture and insects at bay.

The historic Caledonia Library “We are near completion of all our current renovation plans with the last significant project being to put on a new roof this spring,” shared Thomas. “The roof sealant was fixed already, removing sealant which had asbestos in it. The new roof will merge with the roof line of the planned addition.” This planned addition is, in fact, part of the Caledonia Library’s major expansion project which will add nearly 3,200 square feet, essentially tripling the library’s existing space. Planned additions to the existing library include a Community Room for library and public use, a new Children’s Room to promote literacy and fuel young imaginations, a New Library Space for growing resources, a Reading Room for quiet study, a West Room as a multipurpose space, and a Library Lounge featuring a fireplace for peaceful enjoyment. According to Mr. Thomas, the timing couldn’t be better. “Libraries are our centers of knowledge, the number one source of facts,” he reflected. “A modern library, such as the one we want to provide, will have online access and current, accurate reference material to help people make their own educated decisions in a time when there is so much

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Planned extension of the Caledonia Library misinformation, including material which is more opinion than fact. We are often led down different paths by what we see and hear through various media and from public figures.” The library’s commitment to presenting facts and guiding patrons to the most reliable information is one service Thomas finds invaluable. “I can’t think of another time in our nation’s history when libraries, which serve as the center of information and facts so people can make educated decisions, have been so important,” he said. “Access to such a resource is crucial.” “We are at a time in our nation’s history when it is so important to be educated on issues before we agree or disagree and become involved in the decision-making process,” he continued. “In a library, one can do one’s own research and come to his or her own conclusions. It is a place to find and share that information, rather than a place for debate. The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.” There are many additional benefits to expanding the Caledonia Library, as well. “This expansion will help us offer internet access to the over 25% of Caledonia residents who do not have it at home,” he said. “It will provide space for meetings, be a resource for local business owners and a centerpiece which attracts - Dick Thomas, visitors to our village. Patrons Caledonia Library will also be able to find practical resources, health facts as well Board Member as insurance forms, taxation information as well as forms for filing taxes, business insurance information as well as details about government regulation. This major expansion would help us become a resource for everyone down to the very last person.”

“The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.”

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Puzzle Answers This Week FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.

– DEGREE

1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FUNGAL CURE!! YOUR TOENAILS

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Animals, Not Men Suffer Irritable Male Syndrome --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there such a thing as irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? -- Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone. I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, doctors are concerned that the rise of obesity in children and teens may lead to problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea as they age. Children who are obese may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and an abnormal glucose tolerance, increasing their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. But poor physical health is not the only concern parents should have if their children are obese. Overweight and obese children are often targets of social discrimination, which can negatively affect their selfesteem and may even hinder their academic and social functioning. Parents concerned about their children’s weight should consult their children’s physicians and recognize that a combination of daily exercise and a healthy diet is the most effective way to help kids lose weight and maintain a healthy weight into adulthood.

WE'RE HIRING!

* Save and thoroughly clean foam egg cartons for kids’ paint palettes. The wells keep colors contained, and the flat space on the lid side is great for resting brushes. They are easy to rinse off and just as easy to recycle if you are done with them. * To help insulate your home to prevent heat loss, build up a mound of snow about 3 feet high at the foundation. Snow is a terrific insulator! -- E.S. in Michigan * When topping a pie with meringue, make sure that it touches all the edges of the pie crust. Otherwise it will shrink. * Wrinkled ribbons? You can use your curling iron or flat iron to give the satin a quick freshening up. * “You can use a little bit of cooking oil to remove the last bits of sticker adhesive from a glass picture frame. Remove as much of the paper sticker as possible, then dab the spot with oil on a paper towel. Rub off. When all the adhesive is removed, use glass cleaner.” -- R.H. in South Carolina

* Got stale bread? If it’s not too stale, you can try to bring it back in the oven. Set on a low heat alongside -- but not in -- a pan with water. If it’s too far gone, you can always cut it up into cubes and make it croutons, or toast and grind into breadcrumbs. No waste! BATAVIA EDITION
