Can Indoor Cats Skip Yearly Vaccinations?

Active Living 50+ ____________________26 Auctions & Antiques ____________________12 Automotive ____________________14 Body & Mind ____________________10 Classifieds ____________________42 Employment ____________________32

DEAR TERRY: I know it can be tough pulling together the funds to vaccinate your pets every year, but it really is critically important that they stay up to date on their shots. In addition to rabies vaccination -- which is required by law in most municipalities -- your cats need to be vaccinated against feline distemper -- a group of three viruses that are easily spread (they can even be tracked into the house on your shoes) and can cause severe illness and death in cats. If your cats have never received an FLV (feline leukemia virus) vaccination, they need to be evaluated and given this shot, too. Getting up to date on their shots gives them an umbrella of protection against these illnesses, because you never know what may happen in the future. What if they are spooked by a storm or a volley of fireworks, and dart outside? That’s dangerous enough without them potentially crossing paths with an infected cat. Call around for a better price on veterinary exams and shots. Low-cost clinics are held in many cities and counties, but you have to look online or check notices at the pet store or city hall. Community newspapers are another source to find out about these clinics.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, “Sandy” and “Frankie,” are indoor cats who never go out and never even try to escape. I last took them to the vet about three years ago. A friend said I’m supposed to take them every year and get their rabies shot, but I don’t see the point. If they never get out, how could they get exposed? Also, vaccinations are expensive. -- Terry H., Buffalo, New York

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY

REAL ESTATE SECTION

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

THE FLOSSING SEQUENCE There is a reason dentists ask their patients at every visit if they floss their teeth. Flossing helps prevent gum disease and the sneaky cavities that form between teeth. And those who floss their teeth at all are already doing better than 70 percent of Americans. But it is possible you are making a pretty big mistake if you are flossing after you brush your teeth. Flossing releases food, plaque, and bacteria into the mouth, and if you have already brushed your teeth, all that is going to linger in your mouth until the next time you brush. Flossing first also makes brushing more effective by allowing toothpaste and bristles to reach areas that were blocked by food and plaque. Everyone can benefit from preventive dental care. Experience proves it is to your advantage to take

time for your oral health no matter how busy your personal or professional schedule. A few minutes spent each day on your teeth can not only help preserve good dental health, but it can also help you save on future dental visits. Nothing is more economical than regular dental checkups, so please let BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL help you take care of your dental health. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, you can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. If you are only going to floss once a day (twice is recommended) it is better to do so at night after you’ve finished eating for the day so that food does not sit between your teeth overnight.

The Weight-Loss Battle Continues --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am looking for advice on diet pills. I have tried everything. I eat well, go to the gym and walk, but my meniscus problem limits my walking speed. Since menopause, I have gained 30 pounds. I am sure there is something out there that will kick-start my metabolism. I am so depressed, and my doctor has no sympathy. -- A.R. ANSWER: Difficulty losing excess weight is one of the greatest public health problems in industrial countries, and I’m not going to solve it here, but I’ll try to discuss principles of drug treatment for weight. One critical issue is to look at any medications you are taking: Many can cause weight gain, and some, like beta blockers, often used for high blood pressure, are unrecognized by many doctors. Stopping medicines that predispose to weight gain is critical. Depression itself is a predisposing factor to weight gain. Some people lose weight with depression, but my experience is that weight gain is much more common. Many anti-depression medicines cause weight gain. One, bupropion, commonly causes weight loss. Among medicines specifically for weight loss, most work either by decreasing fat absorption or by reducing appetite. They don’t really increase metabolism, with the exception of phentermine, which does increase resting energy expenditure somewhat and may be useful in preventing weight regain in people who have lost weight, for whom metabolism does often slow down. Orlistat (called Xenical by prescription, Alli over-the-counter) prevents the body from absorbing some of the fat in the diet. The fat is then excreted through stool. This may cause many people to have gastrointestinal side effects, which are diminished when on a low-fat diet. Orlistat caused people to lose about 7 pounds more than placebo. There are several drugs that work on appetite. Liraglutide is a diabetes medicine that has been found to be helpful in overweight people even without diabetes. Metformin is another diabetes medicine that is sometimes used for weight loss, although it does not have a Food and Drug Administration indication for this. Both of these diabetes drugs often have gastrointestinal side effects. Lorcaserin (Belviq) is about as effective as orlistat, but with fewer side effects (headache was the most common). Some weight loss experts use combination drugs, including phentermine/topiramate (Qsymia) and bupropion/naltrexone (Contrave). These have more significant risks. I don’t prescribe these drugs, but I do refer my patients who are interested in medication treatment to a weight loss expert. Look for a doctor who is board certified in obesity management. It’s important to remember that medications are not a cure for being overweight. Once the medicines stop, weight is expected to rise, unless a person makes significant changes in diet and exercise. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

COVID Can’t Stop Them from Making Spirits Bright! BY AMANDA DUDEK ncredibly, Halloween and with it, the last vestiges of autumn are already slipping away. Foliage is beginning to thin, revealing the stark trunks and branches which will soon contribute to the severe beauty of frigid winter months. Thoughts turn naturally towards the holiday season fast approaching. For many, these are warm thoughts, filled with family and plenty. For others, however, these thoughts are anxious. Families are wondering if they will be able to afford warm coats and boots, let alone presents, for their children. Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford of Making Spirits Bright are doing all they can to make sure these families have their needs met – and a little something extra – this Christmas.

I

support so many,” shared Buss. “When you look at the community outreach and the donations from those in the Greater Rochester Area, the response has just been tremendous. We have a phenomenal group of people who help us and support us year in and year out.”

It all started with a dream of bringing Christmas to families in need in Webster and Rochester. Making Spirits Bright, the gift-giving organization birthed from this dream in March 2014, took its inspiration from a friend and cofounder, said Making Spirits Bright Founder, Jamie Buss. “My friend read a news story about this gentleman who threw a Christmas party every year at a local women’s shelter in Syracuse and gave gifts to the women and their children. It inspired us.”

COVID-19 has been particularly hard on families this year. “A number of families reached out to us this year in need of cleaning products, toiletries and Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford of food,” Buss explained. “For Making Spirits Bright the first time, we held a spring donation drive to help these families, and we added many more need items to the form we ask our families to fill out: things like food, masks, cleaning supplies. About 75% of families have checked those boxes, which is a far higher percentage than we have seen in past years. We have also established a list of resources for these families to help with things we are not able to provide. That was important to us.”

Jamie and her friend took this idea, and adapted and embellished it, making it their own. “It snowballed from there. The first year, we helped 13 families, then 41, 51, 52 and this past year, we helped 47 families.” This year, Making Spirits Bright has received requests from families they have reached in the past. “We do not repeat with families unless their circumstances have changed drastically,” explained Buss. “This year, we have further expanded into Rochester. We try to reach as many families as we can, and we have worked hard to provide a resource list to those we cannot help again this year.” Participating families, which are selected with the help of social workers, school administrators and mental health staff and others, are equally divided between the Webster and Rochester areas. Each family member requests four items they need and three items they want. Need items include such things as warm winter clothing like hats, coats, boots, hygiene products, toilet paper, toothpaste, bedding, necessities for the home. Want items are items like toys, watches, perfume, robes, small appliances. “A lot of our families reach out for furniture,” said Buss. “One of our families had lived with no furniture in their home for the past three years, so we reached out to the community for gently used furniture, including beds, chairs, a table, a sofa. They received furniture that Christmas. Our community is so generous.” “Businesses and families as well as community members adopt families and fill their Christmas lists. 30 families were adopted outright!” exclaimed Buss. “The remaining families and individuals are placed onto our Community List so that people can adopt a family, a person or purchase an individual item.” Buss explains that, in the past, all of the gifts were dropped off at her own home and the home of another group member to be wrapped at a community wrapping party. This year due to COVID-19, volunteers will wrap the gifts they pick up for each family. In 2018, they wrapped an astounding 1,600-1,700 gifts; in 2019, even more. “We brought them to one of the local schools, invited the community to join in and wrapped them in the span of two hours,” said Buss, stating that the gifts are then delivered the following week. “Our Making Spirits Bright Program has grown every year. For six years, we have operated out of our homes, which we outgrew long ago, but this year, the DiMarco Group generously donated office space to us in Baytown Plaza. All of the donations will now be brought there.”

To meet this new surge of needs, Buss and Bedford are turning to area communities. “If people are interested in adopting a family, they can certainly reach out; we can always use more,” said Buss. “This year, we are really looking for groups to donate toiletries, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene products, and more. If anyone is willing to run such a collection drive on our behalf, we will certainly make sure it goes to those families which need it most.” Want to help or know of a family in need? INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Although apple bobbing still occurs today, many eschew the tradition because of germs. The concept of sticking one’s face into a communal bucket of water isn’t appealing in a society that prioritizes sanitary behavior. Those who grew up bobbing for apples and want to continue the tradition in a more sanitary way can create individualized games. Instead of one large bucket, purchase smaller buckets and fill them with water. Place a couple of apples in each bucket and let participants race to see who can grab an apple first.

www.landltransmissions.com ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE

MASONRY & BASEMENT

(NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel. Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation. The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain. On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands. In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen. For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe. Encounter rescued sea turtles during a behind-the-scenes tour of the planet’s first licensed veterinary hospital for turtles. Located in Marathon, The Turtle Hospital rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured turtles and, whenever possible, releases them back into the ocean.

OTHER

West of Marathon, you’ll drive across the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest segmental bridges and the centerpiece of the iconic Florida Keys Overseas Highway.

D.G. Cassiano Excavating, LLC

Discover tiny Key deer on Big Pine Key. Endangered Key deer live only in the Lower Keys and can be spotted grazing during early morning and at dusk. The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife.

• Water Line Services • New Stone Driveways & Parking Pads • Trucking: Driveway Stone/Gravel/ Sand/Topsoil - All delivered • Septic Tanks, D-Box, Septic Systems Installed & Repaired Fully Insured

In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat.

Ionia Lost and Found Oodles of heartfelt thanks to the individual who not only found my glasses, but also figured out that they were mine and left them on my doorstep. They have been missing for weeks, and I had given up all hope of ever finding them again. Thus, you cannot possibly imagine my surprise and my delight, on that morning, when they turned up on my front doorstep. I wish you had left a note, so I could thank you

properly, but since this is not possible, I do hope, at least, that you will find this note and know that you have made my day! You are amazing, and I am so grateful! Thank you, thank you, thank you! So Pretty! Thank you to the many homes and businesses that have decorated so nicely for the fall season! Mums, scarecrows, and pumpkins all add to the beauty of this season. Geneseo Theaters Open!

So thankful to have this fine, local theater back open. Sure have missed it. Happy for Jason and staff after having to be closed for so long. Livonia Rocks! Heartfelt thank you to the kind wonderful angels that quietly place these small slate rocks painted with great messages and inspirations. You make my overnight shift at local convenient store more pleasurable. May the Lord bless you and your families. In these days of divide, your bringing “New Normal” I agree that COVID-19 is highly contagious and potentially life threatening. I am sympathetic for people that have lost loved ones. However, why is nobody talking about the 8.1 million people that have recovered or never/hardly got sick after testing positive? That is roughly a 97% survival rate! Look it up; do the math. The numbers are available from reputable sources. Now we have “officials” saying not to spend Holidays with family? Ridiculous! SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Online Scammers Eye Holiday Shoppers Holiday shopping online is one of our annual rituals, at least for a portion of the gifts we want to buy. A much larger percentage of us are likely to shop online this year. That's what the scammers and thieves are hoping, anyway. The biggest threat this year is likely to be emails. You'll often receive an email from the retailer saying your purchase has been shipped, and there might be a link in the email about that delivery. Beware clicking it. It could be a scammer hoping to install malware on your computer to capture any future credit card or account numbers you type in. Or they might ask you outright to type in personal information such as your name and credit card number. Instead of clicking any link in any email supposedly from a retailer, go to the merchant's website to look for information on your purchase or call them directly. Take the phone number from your bill or their website, not from any email. You might also receive emails about items you didn't order and worry that your account has been hacked. Again, that is one way for the scammers to get you to click a link. Don't do it. Call the merchant instead. Just ordering online isn't the end of your steps to being safe. There are the porch pirates, those awful people who dash up to the house and steal packages right at the door. They often follow delivery trucks to see where the parcels are being left. Keep an eye out for your delivery. Or track it online. A final warning: Merchants often ask you to download their app to make purchases. You don't have to. You can still make online purchases without adding yet another potentially unsecure form of communication.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE HEREDITARY? The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are late-onset, which has no obvious family pattern. Researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 1, 1765, despite widespread opposition in the American colonies, Parliament enacts the Stamp Act, designed to raise revenue for British military in America. The Stamp Act was designed to force colonists to use special stamped paper in the printing of newspapers, pamphlets, almanacs and playing cards.

OUR RESTAURANT IS COVID FRIENDLY, FOLLOWING ALL STATE MANDATES AND PROTOCOLS,

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Remember to turn off bathroom fans after 10 minutes. In the winter, if your house is on the dry side, don’t use the fan at all: Open the door so the humidity from the shower or bath reaches into the house.

WE MAKE IT OUR PERSONAL

RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE OUR GUESTS FEEL SAFE AND COMFORTABLE DURING THEIR VISIT.

SOME OF WHAT OUR GUEST HAVE SAID“Casey did a great job. Food was excellent. Nice job working with Covid restrictions.” (Ashley, LeRoy, N.Y.) “Everything was outstanding. It’s a hard time with all the rules, but you did great!” (Colleen, Victor, N.Y.) “Heather is amazing and so is your establishment. With these trying times, your place handles it amazingly. Thank you.” (Avon, N.Y.)

* Need extra dishware or servingware for a holiday meal? Try looking at secondhand stores for large dishes, serving utensils and more. It’s sometimes cheaper than getting throwaways, and it’s better for the environment! You can always donate them again after the holidays. * Here’s a makeup tip from Captain Obvious: Wet your beauty blender. I didn’t know this and had been using it for about a month before my sister told me. So much better! -- V.A. in Florida

* “Quick sewing tip: Check your fabric’s stretch direction before you lay out your pieces. You’ll thank me later.” -- E.F. in Missouri

OUR GUESTS.

“We were very impressed with your Covid compliance. The food was fantastic as always.” (Tamara, Williamsville, N.Y.)

* “To remove the skin from salmon, I freeze it and skin it while frozen. The skin comes off much easier, and I waste less of the fish. I buy a large piece and parcel it into several smaller pieces, since it’s just me. I like salmon, and it’s healthy for me!” -- L.A. in Florida

* Freeze fruit that is on the verge of spoiling rather than letting it go to waste. You don’t even have to use it for smoothies. Chuck a handful of frozen fruit in water or iced tea for added flavor. And it’s a superb addition to fancy cocktails.

INCLUDING ADDITIONAL SAFETY MEASURES FOR

“Glad to see you are open. Food was delicious and service was wonderful. Safety precautions were very well done.” (Todd, unknown)

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

Please apply in person at:

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.

ANTICIPATED OPENING

CLEANER POSITION Full-Time Position: 12 Months

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.

(Second shift position with shift differential, Saturday rotation; day shift for school breaks and summer) Wage and Benefits package (including holidays off ) Requirements: Must be able to lift 30-50 pounds, climb ladders, operate scrubbing equipment More information available at www.yorkcsd.org Send cover letter, resume and application to:

A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.
