DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES
Review the business online. Review Trackers reports that more than 81 percent of consumers are likely to visit Google Reviews prior to visiting a business. That’s a testament to the value of online review aggregators. After a positive experience with a local business, consumers can visit Google Reviews or another online review aggregator like Yelp and share the details of their encounter. Chances are strong the review will be read and compel others to patronize the business.
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam MazzottaCat Walking…
Beneficial or not?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a neighbor who puts both of her cats on leashes and walks them through the neighborhood each day. Shouldn’t they be outside on their own, prowling and doing cat stuff? Sign me -- Concerned Cat Mom in Providence, Rhode Island
DEAR CONCERNED: As long as the cats aren’t distressed by the leash, I don’t see a problem.
Some cats are completely uninterested in exploring the world outside, and some are downright fearful of it. And that’s totally fine. Others, however, want to be outside every chance they get.
Letting cats wander outside puts them at risk of being struck by a car, attacked by wildlife or feral cats, or contracting an illness. Cats can be a menace to other creatures, so much so that there’s evidence they are impacting the bird population. Songbirds are already under threat from climate change and bird flu (which spreads just as easily among wild birds as it does on chicken farms), so adding another predator to the list is not a good thing.
Putting a cat on a leash (and in a harness, rather than a collar) is a great way to help them explore while keeping them safe. It’s also helpful when taking your cat on long car trips -- they can stretch their legs safely at rest stops.
For those who’d like to try walking their cat, buy a harness that fits your cat. Cats won’t like the harness at first; put it on and just let them get used to it while you hold the leash loosely. Make it a positive experience with lots of treats. Once they start exploring comfortably with the harness on, walk around with them, guiding them. Don’t tug on the leash or drag them. Pick them up if they won’t move, but always keep it positive.

VENT BRIGHTER
How Two Strangers Brightened My Demeanor
Cigarette butts
It was a cold rainy day and at age 82, I didn’t want to drive on 490 in heavy traffic to Rochester General Hospital from my home to visit my wife of 59 years. I took an Uber ride. I struck up a conversation with the driver, Mike, for the 15 minute drive. He was a good conversationalist, stating he had retired in the past year. He was driving part-time to work for another year to save more money for he and his wife’s dream vacation to Aruba. I told him how happy I was for him. Then at 8PM visiting curfew hour came and I got another Uber. This time it was a woman in her late 30’s. In our talk she stated that she had 3 children, ages 8,11 and 14 but she was divorced. Unbelievably she worked a full-time job in the day and part-time at Uber three nights a week for 4 hours each night. When she got me to my home I told her to just wait in the driveway. I gave her a bottled water and an apple. Life is not easy.
Featured Media Staff to the Rescue
I often see people standing outside smoking a cigarette and then they either just throw it on the ground or throw it down in the drains. I often wonder if they think by throwing it in the drain they’re doing us a favor. But they’re not. There’s toxic chemicals, Arsenic and Lead that will be released into the environment and contaminate our water. I don’t know about you, but I like drinking clean water and breathing clean air. You would think everybody would want to drink clean water.
Cell Phones
I want to recognize & commend the extraordinary efforts of your publication’s Featured Media staff, specifically Jenna for going the extra mile in assisting me with the printing and on-time delivery of photo Christmas cards. Although I thought I was allowing enough time to upload & submit my choice photo for printing of the cards, my inadequacies in properly doing so (I am somewhat tech-challenged) presented difficulties to the graphic design staff. But with Jenna’s patience & perseverance she was able to not only work her magic in getting the cards printed successfully, she also apologized (though not at all her fault) for the delay, and ended up expediting the shipment for delivery. Kudos.
(By the way, why have the former Raves/Rants columns been replaced by the far-less-catchy terms “Brighter/Vent”?)
If you’re going to stand and talk on your cell phone, please don’t stand next to the crosswalks or have a social discussion there either. If you’re going to be on your phone, at least move further away instead of remaining there.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY
Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior.
While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

CAN MY DENTIST TREAT A MOUTH SORE?
Mouth sores—also called mouth ulcers and canker sores—are painful red, yellow, or white spots that appear inside the mouth. They are not the same as cold sores, which appear on the outer lips and are caused by a virus. Mouth sores are common because they’re often caused by biting one’s cheek or tongue. But sometimes mouth sores can indicate something more serious, like the presence of cancer. Other causes include sharp teeth, improper tooth brushing, or ill-fitting dentures, all of which can be fixed by your dentist. If you frequently get mouth sores for no apparent reason, your dentist can monitor the sores and recommend further testing to see if cancer or another condition is causing the problem.
It’s difficult to smile when you have oral issues. If mouth sores or other oral
concerns prevent you from smiling, take care of the problem with the help of your dentist. Your smile power is our primary focus at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, and we’ll work with you to help you achieve optimal oral health. For gentle dental care for everyone in your family, using the leadingedge techniques, equipment, and materials available today, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances.
P.S. Mouth sores often clear up on their own, but any mouth sore that lasts more than three weeks should be evaluated by a doctor or dentist.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.High Troponin Levels Follow After Bout of Food Poisoning
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male who apparently suffered a case of food poisoning. I say apparently because no cause was ever discovered for the uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea that lasted for a whole day and recurred briefly the following morning. A trip to the emergency room involved many tests, but nothing turned up except a troponin level well over 0.04 ng/mL, which prompted an angiogram that didn’t reveal any problems with my heart. What else might have caused my high troponin level? -- Anon.
ANSWER: A troponin level is a standard blood test usually used to evaluate patients for heart attacks. However, newer, highly sensitive assays have proven that tiny levels of troponin may be detected in nearly everybody.
A level above 0.04 ng/mL is often used as the cutoff for the “normal” range, but depending on the assay and population studied, a few healthy people may have levels above this. People with heart attacks may have troponin levels in the hundreds or thousands. The higher the troponin level, the more muscle damage there is. The fact that your coronary arteries don’t show any blockages is very good news. Other types of heart damage may also cause a high troponin level, including inflammation of the heart (myocarditis) and heart failure. Also, critical illnesses can cause high troponin levels (at much higher levels than you may have had) in people who don’t have heart blockages. (A median of 0.57 ng/ mL was found in people with septic shock.)
I found a long list of reported causes behind elevated troponin levels, but gastroenteritis was not on the list. I suspect your body was working so hard to fight off the infection without enough fluid that your heart needed more oxygen-carrying blood than it got, leading to tiny amounts of injury to the heart muscle despite normal heart arteries. You can lose a lot of fluid with vomiting and diarrhea, and people at age 77 don’t have as much reserve as they did when they were younger.

GENERAL CONTRACTING
KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET
by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.
What do we know?
Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.
Who (or what) is at risk?
Weather means more when you have a garden. There’s nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans. ~Marcelene Cox
HANDYMEN/WOMEN
While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.
On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.
You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s.
How can we help protect the bees?
It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive.
Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home.
Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE
(NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities.
Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.
Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.
Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.
For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.
“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”
It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”
Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.
“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”
To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.
Dr. Walter Cooper A Legacy of Science, Education, and Civil Rights
BY SUZIE WELLSSo many Rochesterians have made indelible contributions to our rich history, and RCSD School #10 on Congress Ave. is named a er Dr. Walter Cooper for a very important reason.
e first African American to earn a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Rochester (1957), Cooper made a name for himself in his professional field. However, his contributions to civil rights and advocacy for education as a means to improve humanity have been his even stronger legacy.
Growing up in Clairton, Pennsylvania, Cooper says he learned his educational self-discipline and broader views of humankind from his parents and neighbors in what he describes as a multicultural community with immigrants from Italy, Sicily, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and many other countries. He says, “We were surrounded by what I consider a compilation of humanity … where we saw how people worked hard trying to survive.”
A strong student raised with self-discipline and dedication to learn as much as he possibly could, Cooper earned a full academic and football scholarship at Washington & Jefferson College, where he majored in chemistry and minored in physics and math. A star athlete and student leader, he was elected president of the college’s National Honor Society and graduated in 1950.
Cooper and his wife moved to Rochester so he could pursue his PhD, and worked at Eastman Kodak, earning three process patents in photographic chemistry during his 30-year career until he retired in 1986. He credits Kodak for allowing Black scientists to succeed.
However, embedded in the racial unrest of Rochester mid-century, Cooper found himself more and moredrawntothecivilrightsworld, “emphasizing [his] humanitarian perspective and passionately held views that better education was the answer.” He connected with Martin Luther King, Jr. about peaceful protests and the importance of being disciplined and orderly.
Dr. Cooper co-founded the Rochester Urban League (1965), founded Action for a Better Community (1964), served as president of the NAACP Rochester branch, and was Associate Director of the Rochester-Monroe County Anti-Poverty program. Cooper also establishedRochester’sSisterCityprogramwithBamako,Mali(1975).
Hiscontributionstocivilrightsanddiplomacyearnedhimwidespread recognition, including the Frederick Douglass Medal for lifelong civil rights involvement from the University of Rochester (2008) as well as honorary doctoral degrees from Washington & Jefferson College (1987) and SUNY Geneseo (2005).
At the heart of Dr. Cooper’s activism has been his belief in the transformative power of education. From an early age, reading and developing an understanding of current affairs and civil discourse through reading the papers his mother had at home, Cooper understood that education was the great equalizer, transcending racial inequality and empowering marginalized communities. is conviction led him to serve on the Board of Regents for the New York State Education Department, where he championed initiatives to improve access to quality education for all students.
roughout his life, Dr. Cooper crossed paths with such icons as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Robert Kennedy. Yet, it was his humility and compassion that has le the most lasting impression on those who knew him. Described by Washington & Jefferson as a “visionary leader [who has] influenced thelivesofpossiblythousandsofstudentslookingforgreaterpurpose, direction, and change in a turbulent, unfair world,” Dr. Cooper’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Reflecting on his life’s work, Dr. Cooper remains steadfast in his commitment to creating a more equitable society. “Life has been very good to me,” he says, “because I think I used lots of energy and time in promoting my own future and the future of others around me. at’s why I take a great interest in education, because it’s the leveling field for those who come from poverty, for those who are unnoticed in this great society.”
Today, the legacy of Dr. Walter Cooper lives on at RCSD School #10, a testament to his enduring influence on science, education, civil rights, and humanity. His life serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us that true greatness lies in service to others.

Here’s a Tip
* Soak your metal tools in Coca-Cola when they get gummed up. It does a great job of loosening the gunk, and a er a few hours in a Coke bath, you can almost just brush stuff right off. Makes you wonder about drinking it, but whatever works!
* To make a cottage cheese dip, blend it in your food processor until smooth and add your dip flavoring packet or season with flavors as you would sour cream.
* If you have a tablecloth that is stained, you might be able to salvage it into napkins or a table runner. You can edge it with a pretty and complementary fabric to spice things up a little.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW
Be brief yet effective
A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE
Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.
Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY
Mental side effects
Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS
Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements.
Ratherthanstatethatyouwereresponsibleforprovidingcustomerservice, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence.
If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

Engage in activities that can improve your marketability. Be sure to list training, coursework, degree, or volunteer efforts that pertain directly to the skills needed for the job to which you’re applying. These additions can tip the scales in your favor over another applicant.
