DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an attorney who helps clients prepare wills, I’d like to urge your readers to review their end-of-life plans and make sure that their pets are provided for. It’s so important to designate a new caregiver for their pets so that they are quickly rehomed to a person who will love and care for them. I own a lovable German Shepherd, and each year, I review my own life plan and adjust it if needed -- usually an adjustment in the amount I’ll give to his future caregiver to help with the financial aspects of taking in a pet, which can be substantial. -- Darren H., Philadelphia

DEAR DARREN: Thank you for this reminder. None of us likes to think about the possibility of dying, but as people who love and care for our pets, we need to do it for them, and make sure they will be loved and cared for. You can read more about how to include a pet clause in your will at this link: https://tinyurl. com/3yjbzmdx. What if you’re not in a position to make or update your will at this time? Put it on your to-do list, and in the meantime, make a list of trusted relatives and friends who you think would be good caregivers for your pet. Contact each of them to ask if they’d be willing to take in your pet if something should happen to you. This type of informal arrangement will give you some peace of mind. As soon as you’re able to do so, create a written will or review your existing will. This helps ensure that your pet will go to a loving home and minimize their stress and grief.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Hi! My name is
Smores. I am two years old. I love to hunt, disobey my family, and get a lot of attention. Sometimes I cross the road and then mom yells at me. I love to take naps during the day and get attention at night. I enjoy going upstairs to snuggle with my favorite person, Kaylina. I live with my cousin named Smokey and we were born on the exact same day, April 2nd.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

HANDYMEN/WOMEN
REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
REAL ESTATE SECTION
Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pandemic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rentals.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN Turn off your notifications. According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Waiting Out COVID
An unscientific poll of senior friends and neighbors revealed just what we’ve accomplished during the past two years of this pandemic. The answer: not much. Mostly, it seems, we’ve been waiting. Waiting for it to be safe to shop in person. Waiting for our clubs and meetings to start up again. Waiting for a visit from family across the country that has feared bringing COVID to our door. Waiting for all the vaccines and boosters to do what they were supposed to do. Waiting to be unafraid again. In the beginning we were all for following the rules. We seniors are a tough bunch, and we know a lot. We have coping skills that got us through any number of crises life has thrown at us. But this pandemic has brought many of us to our knees. Each person in my humble survey could, when queried, point to the exact time when the tide turned in their mental health. It was the omicron variant and the additional vaccine booster, when it became apparent that COVID wasn’t going away soon. For me, a daily to-do list has come in handy. On a sheet of paper I have two columns: one work, one play. In the work column there are household tasks such as doing one load of laundry. In the play column are things like wiping the dust off the piano and learning a new song each week. On the back of the page are two more columns. One is a list of names, and somebody gets called every day. In the other column is an ever-lengthening list of things that are going right. This one is sometimes hard to fill out, but it gets done, even if it’s only notes like: Completed a crossword puzzle in seven minutes. Try it. Make your lists, especially if you’ve felt yourself sinking under the weight of this never-ending pandemic. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
DELAY THE DECAY Everyday foods containing carbohydrates accelerate tooth decay when not cleaned from the surface of the teeth. Mouth bacteria turns sugars and starches into acids for digestion, creating a combination of bacteria, acid, saliva, and food particles that form plaque on teeth, allowing the acids to erode tooth enamel and create cavities. Decay is the deterioration of the tooth structure that affects both the enamel and the dentin in the tooth. Daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste after meals and before bed, cleaning between teeth with dental floss or picks, and rinsing with a fluoridated, antiseptic mouthwash will diminish the amount of decay that occurs. Regular professional cleanings and drinking a pint of water daily are essential to preventing tooth decay.
Diligent, carefully performed home oral hygiene is instrumental in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to demonstrate good brushing and flossing techniques as well as inform you about products that we know will help you maintain a healthy smile between routine dental checkups. For an appointment for family dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246. Our full service dental office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P. S. Humans can exert over 200 pounds of pressure on their back teeth when chewing; lucky for us, tooth enamel is stronger than any other substance on earth besides diamonds.

HOW TO BE A BETTER HEALTH CARE CONSUMER Avoid overemphasizing cost. Cost is a big consideration for health care consumers. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average annual cost of health insurance in the United States is just under $7,500 for an individual and more than $21,000 for a family. Though it may be tempting to choose the least expensive plan you’re offered, avoid overemphasizing cost, especially at the expense of coverage. Adequate coverage that will help individuals and their families avoid financial difficulties in the case of emergencies or significant medical events should be a bigger priority than the cost of the plan.
DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an elderly friend who’s becoming blind from macular degeneration. After hearing of a particularly frustrating event she experienced due to vision loss, I remembered the great clarity that the yellow-lens (to reduce glare) glasses gave me, not just at night, but daytime also. So, I sent her a pair to see if it would help, as a lastditch effort. She called me crying, it had made such a difference! She has now had her prescription eyeglasses done with the yellow (blue-canceling?) lenses. Of course, we understand that this is just a temporary help, and won’t prevent the blindness from taking its course, but it has given her much better vision for a time. -- I.L.B. ANSWER: Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. It is a degeneration of the central part of the retina, called the macula, which is responsible for fine detail central vision. The underlying cause is not precisely known, and the course is progressive. I was able to find a 2002 study that confirmed that yellow or orange lenses improved contrast sensitivity in people with early age-related macular degeneration, whereas red and gray lenses worsened it. Another study suggested that the perceived benefit (the subjective experience by the person) was enhanced, but that objective improvement in vision was not actually improved much at all. In my opinion, perceived benefit is still worth a great deal, and since there is little effective treatment for the more common “dry” form of ARMD beyond vitamins and smoking cessation, I am publishing your letter in hopes that some people will get improvements in their vision, as your friend did, from this low-cost treatment with essentially no risk of side effects. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved Page 25

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. Angry Recently, it seems many are hung up over the price of gas. Hey folks, there are harmless people dying and families forever being torn apart, and you are complaining about having to pay a bit more for fuel? We are one of the richest nations on earth with the lowest gas prices. I certainly don’t like it, but it is a tiny price to pay compared to the horrible situation befalling many others! I’m angry.
S E V RA It’s spring! Just a friendly reminder that it is spring, and soon the animals out there will be having babies. Many will be out looking for food to feed their babies. Watch out for them because, if they are killed, you will be killing the babies, too, since they will starve to death. Also, with the deer, if a deer crosses in front of you, stop and watch for a baby. Many times the baby is lagging behind mom. I even do this when more than one deer are up ahead of me because you never know how many more are coming. I watch the sides of the road for any animal. By doing all of this, I have never hit or killed a animal. Have a great spring!
Hair? They spent our tax money on hair style discrimination? We can’t afford food, gas, or utilities, yet our lovely government spent weeks – and our money – discussing hair? I guess they want us middle class folks weak and dependent upon our government. Thank God I still have my right arm to work...and vote.
Bags for you! To the person who wrote a few weeks ago about paper versus plastic bags: Why not use a reusable fabric bag? They are not a new idea, and I would be happy to pass on any number of the reusable bags I’ve collected. I collect, wash, and dry them, and they’re ready for a new home. I’d even be happy to sew you your very own reusable fabric bag and created an email account just for you: isewbagsforyou@gmail.com. Drop me a note and I’ll happily sew you a bag. Just promise me that you’ll actually use it (more than once)!
Kudos, Avon Lions Club! Rain or shine (or snow!), the Avon Lions Club puts on a chicken barbecue every spring, and our family looks forward to it each time. Club members are always there in good spirits and with smiling faces, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Thanks for the great meal and your commitment to the community!

How thoughtful! To the kind lady at Eastview Mall with her grandkids: it was so nice of you to purchase a carousel ride for the little girl who looked to be all of three years old. You can only ride the carousel if you have dollar bills, and her mother only had a credit card. Kudos!

Village of Brockport Selected for Empire State Trail Town Program BY PARKS & TRAILS NEW YORK
A
s an Empire State Trail Town, Brockport will harness visitation to the Erie Canalway Trail to support and advance economic development. Parks & Trails New York also announces the release of Bicyclists Bring Business: A Handbook for Attracting Bicyclists to New York’s Canal Communities to help Brockport and other communities market to and benefit from cycling tourists. Parks & Trails New York, the New York State Canal Corporation, and the Village of Brockport are excited to jointly announce that Brockport has been selected as the pilot community for the new Empire State Trail Town program. The program will help Brockport benefit from its location along the Erie Canalway Trail/Empire State Trail.
within a stone’s throw of the very best recreation opportunities that New York has to offer. This new pilot initiative will usher in a new chapter for the trail and make the Village of Brockport a premier destination for cyclists and tourists alike while bolstering the local economy and quality of life for the community. By continually reinventing the experiences and partnerships along the Canal corridor, we are providing fresh opportunities for New Yorkers to experience every corner of the Empire State.”
As part of the program, PTNY staff will provide technical assistance and resources to help the community attract and profit from the growing bicycle tourism market, improve the trail and infrastructure for those that walk and bike in the Village, and establish a strong community identity tied to the trail. By promoting and supporting Brockport as a premier destination for cyclists, the program seeks to create longterm economic, health, and quality of life benefits for the entire community and surrounding area.
Margaret Blackman, Mayor of the Village of Brockport, said, “Brockport is proud to have been selected as the Pilot Town for the new Empire State Trail Towns program. We look forward to discovering new ways to connect our downtown businesses to Empire State trail users and see our already strong connection to the Erie Canal benefit from this collaborative project.”
PTNY will work with the Village to establish a diverse Trail Town steering committee consisting of representatives from local businesses, organizations, institutions, and community groups. The steering committee will assist PTNY staff with data collection efforts and research to document existing conditions in the Village, and use these findings to create a detailed action plan that includes both short and long-term goals and recommendations. The action plan will help guide planning efforts, and will help foster collaboration between Village stakeholders and the general public on event planning, advocacy, stewardship, and marketing. With the completion of the Empire State Trail in 2020, the Erie Canalway Trail— the east-west leg of the statewide system— is growing in popularity. An economic impact study completed by PTNY in 2014 showed that the ECT attracts nearly 1.6 million annual visits and generates over $250 million in annual economic impact. Trail use figures from 2021 estimated that the Erie Canalway Trail drew over 3.1 million annual visits, including over 58,000 visits to the trail in Brockport. The popularity of the Erie Canalway Trail is increasing as is, presumably, its economic impact. Communities along the Canalway Trail system, like Brockport, are in the perfect position to build on the national publicity of the Empire State Trail. The Empire State Trail Town Program will be modeled after the successful Great Allegheny Passage Trail Town program established by the Progress Fund in 2007. A recent study estimated that tourism along the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage resulted in over $121 million in economic impact in 2019, including an estimated $19 million in tax revenue. Robin Dropkin, Executive Director of Parks & Trails New York, said, “We are thrilled to be working with the Village of Brockport as the first Empire State Trail Town. Brockport already has a great reputation and a lot to offer outdoor enthusiasts. We look forward to helping the Village build strong partnerships, create safer streets for bicyclists and pedestrians, and improve connections between the Erie Canalway Trail and Main Street businesses.” New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “Over the past two years, the Empire State Trail has brought bikers, hikers, and walkers and more

Bicyclists Bring Business Handbook In order to help communities along the corridor benefit from their proximity to the Canalway Trail and take advantage of the economic benefits of bicycle tourism, Parks & Trails New York has also released an updated version of Bicyclists Bring Business: A Handbook for Attracting Bicyclists to New York’s Canal Communities. The new guide provides background data on the economic benefits of bicycle tourism, and walks communities through the strategies that community leaders and business owners can use to attract bike tourists and tap into the bicycle tourism market. The guide presents the essential steps of how Canalway Trail communities can benefit from trail users, including strategies to attract bicycle tourists and provide them with a positive experience. The 40-page guide features data from background research on bicycle tourism and provides numerous examples of successful strategies employed around the country. WOMEN AND STEM
Pellegrino Auto Sales is looking for a full-time
The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. Sell your skills to yourself first before you share them with a boss. Make a list of why you deserve a raise and then back up those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your résumé.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For moister and softer cookies, use honey as a substitute for a third of the sugar in your cookie recipe. * And speaking of honey, did you know it has antibacterial properties? Yep! Try rubbing a bit of it over a small cut for faster, more natural healing. * “Keep venetian blinds from sticking to one another and discourage dust by rubbing them down individually with a sheet of fabric softener. This effect will last at least a month, in my experience.” -- S.F. in Alabama * “Have a headache? Try drinking a couple of glasses of a sports drink. This works for my friends and me. Maybe we just need to be drinking more water, but the sports drinks get us back on track more quickly than medicine most times.” -- E.L. in Colorado * “This time-tested tip will keep your houseplants in the green while you’re away from home: Set plants in the bathtub in an inch or less of water. If your flowerpot does not have drain holes, get a short length of cotton rope and feed it from the topsoil to the tub. This will keep plants alive and thriving for a week or more.” -- D.R. in Florida * “Having a hard time cutting out soda? Try this: Every time you reach for a glass of soda, drink a full cup of water first. You will find that your thirst is sated better, and you are not as “thirsty” for that sugar water!” -- F.E. in South Carolina EMPLOYMENT

DID YOU KNOW? Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.
