A Runner’s Plea to Dog Owners
Auctions & Antiques _____________________11
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I witnessed an incident on my morning run that illustrated the reason why dogs need to be on a leash at all times in residential areas. A runner ahead of me on the side of the road approached a dog owner and his Collie ambling along the sidewalk. The owner had unfastened the dog’s leash so that it could explore ahead. The dog seemed calm, but as the runner drew near to them, it suddenly bristled, snarled and then leaped at the runner. Before the owner could grab the dog’s collar, the runner was bitten on her cheek and hand. The injuries were serious enough to require stitches. There is no excuse for an owner to allow their dog off the leash except where it’s expressly permitted, such as dog parks. Even when an owner has trained their dog to respond to verbal commands, the command might not be given fast enough to stop the dog. Runners are attractive targets to many dogs. As we run past, a dog may take our movements as a signal to chase. I have two dogs myself. They’re both too old to run with me now, but in their younger days, I frequently took them with me -- both on a leash. They’ve always responded quickly to verbal commands, but I do not rely on those alone to keep them from darting into traffic or annoying other runners. Please tell your readers to keep the leashes on their dogs. It keeps others safe, it keeps the dogs safe, and it protects owners from legal issues. It’s also the law. -- Rick in Dracut, Massachusetts

Hi. Our names are Dodger and Sprout. Mommy calls me Sprouty. We will turn 6 years old in July. Our sister Dewey lives in Cheektowaga, NY with Mommy’s human daughter. We see her all the time. We moved to S. Bristol in April 2020. This town is beautiful, and everyone has been so nice to us. We love taking walks in Ontario Co Park. Our favorite dinner is plain baked chicken with carrots and peas. Once in a while we get a little piece of pepperoni. If we’re really good. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.
* “Label storage bins on all sides so that no matter how you stack them, or which direction you shove them in, you can always see at a glance which are which. Recently, I went searching through my attic for a particular box, and several boxes were moved out of the way. I had to spend much more time turning them to face the right way so that the labels would be visible.” -- R.F. in Ohio * If a glass breaks, here’s a tip to get up those tiny glass shards that are impossible to pick up or sweep up: Use the inside of a slice of white bread, wadded up. No bread? You also can use a blob of play dough.

It em s t o include in your aut om ot ive em ergency k it Tools: It’s important to include tools in your automotive emergency kit. W hile a full toolbox might be unnecessary, bring along an adjustable w rench, a flat head and Phillips screw driver, a pair of pliers, a tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper, and a flashlight. Extra roadside flares and reflectors also should be packed should you need to pull over and address an automotive problem, such as a flat tire. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or w ith your other tools so you can check tire pressure if you feel your car is not operating as smoothly as it normally does.

Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including nonChristians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent.

CRUISING TIPS AND TRICKS: Make a list of activities. It can be easy to get overwhelmed by all of the offerings on a cruise ship, so much so that there’s some stress over trying to fit it all in. Recognize that you can’t see or hear it all, and prioritize what’s important to you. Make sure you have plenty of time to relax.
BUDGET-FRIENDLY LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Live music: Arenas and football stadiums are not the only places that showcase talented musicians. Music lovers with a passion for live music can visit local venues that cater to local musicians or even more established professionals who play small venues. Open mic nights at local bars can introduce music fans to new artists and/or styles of music, and can provide great opportunities to meet fellow music lovers in your area.

who makes frequent visits to the bathroom to urinate. I am in good health and I wonder what causes this. Where does all that liquid come from? -- A.R.N. ANSWER: What goes in must come out. All the liquid you urinate came from fluid you consumed when drinking and eating food. But it may be more about perception than volume. Frequent urination is extremely common in both men and women, and although some causes are the same, such as an overactive bladder, men have an additional anatomical structure that can lead to urinary problems as they get older: the prostate, a normally walnut-sized gland that may increase in size as men age. It is through the prostate that the urethra, and thus all the urine, has to flow. If the prostate is enlarged, the urinary flow slows down. As the prostate obstruction becomes worse, men may have trouble emptying the bladder completely. This has the effect of making men go to the bathroom more frequently, since the bladder has less functional size. In this case, you aren’t urinating any more volume than before, just more often in smaller amounts. Treatment needs to be directed at the underlying cause. Overactive bladder and enlarged prostate have similar symptoms and different treatments. It is possible that you really are having excess volume, however. Diabetes is the biggest concern here, and you should be tested if you have truly large volumes of urine. ***

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Senior Center Closed? Meet Up in Parking Lot Is your senior center still closed? Most of them are, which means that we haven’t experienced our typical routines for a very long time. Mostly it’s the social aspect we miss. A show of hands: How many of us, if given the opportunity, would show up at the senior center for an in-person gathering even if it was held outside? In the parking lot? It’s being done in some parts of the country, even in cold weather, so it’s possible if those who run your senior center are willing to do the work of spacing chairs 6 feet apart and making coffee in thermoses so it stays hot and pushing around a trolley of cookies. With spring officially here, chances are that if you and others approach the staff of the senior center to express interest, social gatherings like these could be made to happen. An hour once a week would go a long way toward reconnecting with friends and checking in with others to see -- in person -- how they’re really doing. Besides the loss of social interaction, it’s the classes many of us miss: budgeting for living on Social Security, cooking for one, journaling ... and especially the hands-on classes about electronic devices. Those device classes are the very classes we need now that could help us to interact with others on video calls. To their credit, some senior centers have figured out that, if nothing else, they can show video exercise classes we can follow from home. And many of them have stepped forward with volunteers who can help get us signed up online to get the COVID vaccine. From what I hear, though, it’s the in-person social interactions that we seniors miss the most. Even a once-a-week gathering, in a parking lot, would be very welcome. Byron-Bergen Senior is Full STEAM Ahead BY GRETCHEN SPITTLER
Students play robot soccer!
Students test their successful project!
I
n 2013, a fifth-grade Byron-Bergen student entered the school science fair. Her project tested different types of lip gloss. She developed a system of criteria for subjects to rate each sample. There were over 150 entries that year. She won. The next year, she won again. Now a senior, Hope Hersom has her sights set on becoming a mechanical engineer and helping promote STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) fields to other young women. Hersom and several of her classmates volunteered to assist at the sixth-grade Day of STEAM activities on March 10. “Hope was very interested in helping with this event in the hopes that opportunities like this will get more girls “I want to help rural interested in STEAM,” said Byron-Bergen STEAM Lab women get into the teacher Craig Schroth. “She STEAM fields – especially kids at this mentioned that many of the age – because only 13 younger girls shared with her how much fun they percent of engineers had with each challenge, are women.” including the rocket activity - Hope Hersom she was leading. I thought it was awesome that a future mechanical engineer was leading our sixth-graders with their rocket designs.” Hersom said, “I want to help rural women get into the STEAM fields – especially kids at this age – because only 13 percent of engineers are women.” She attributed her drive to take advanced technology courses in high school to her elementary school science fair experiences. When the STEAM Lab was launched in 2015, the current sixth-grade class was in first grade. Since its inception, it has been a way for all kids to build confidence and find interest through science-related topics. All of the Day of STEAM activities utilized

trial and error and problem-solving techniques from discovering the right combination of coding blocks and changing variables to working with limited resources. One of the most popular activities was 5-on-5 robot soccer. It required team work and collaboration, two ideas that Schroth promotes in the STEAM Lab. “I thought today was a fantastic reminder of not only how STEAM can bring people together through collaboration and problem solving, but of the importance of providing these activities to students during their formative years,” said Schroth. “Who knows, today may have inspired a few more young people to become mechanical engineers or, at least, maintain an open mind towards science.”

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

Amazing! Hats off to The Yard of Ale and J&T pizza for opening and feeding the Lady Knights after their sectional win. It is so great living in a small town. Bless your thoughtful heart! I would like to thank the lady who offered and pumped my gas on a very cold and windy day at Tops in Dansville. I have asthma and COPD which makes it hard enough to breath, not to mention wearing masks. Thank you and Bless Your Thoughtful Heart
paying for my remaining balance. I paid with my app, but I didn’t catch that I still had a balance. So, thank you! I returned your generosity and paid it forward. Doggone! Thank you to the persons who noticed the older dog wandering in an unsafe roadway and called the Hamlin Shelter. He was microchipped. Our boy is back home, and we are thankful!
Thank you, propane delivery drivers! I would like to thank the propane delivery truck drivers who deliver to us all Thank you! Ban dogs from parks Is banning dogs from parks what it is going to take to stop dog owners from leaving plastic bags of dog poop around the park? Dog owners, it is your job to remove your dog’s poop, not leave it in the park for other people. Banning dogs from parks may be the only solution to this problem! Now that spring is here and more people are walking their dogs, the plastic poop bags line the park walkways. It’s disgusting. Hunter entitlement Thanks to the neighboring hunter who entered my and my two neighbors’ properties last December to apparently trail an injured deer and placed 30+ pink plastic flags on the brush and trees throughout the properties and left them hanging there. You not only didn’t ask for permission, but worse you also felt entitled to leave them there for us to remove the flagging and pick up af-
ter you. No wonder hunters have trouble getting permission when finding private land to hunt on when those like you do not respect private property landowners. Disgusting language I know and understand the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech. I also understand that we have a choice of what kind of language to use. I live in a very small community. One resident in this community has chosen to use the most vulgar, obscene word in our language on a very large sign in his front yard to insult our President. Any child old enough to read can see this and decide it is all right to use that word. I wonder if he uses this word with his children and grandchildren? Can his parents be proud of that sign? I don’t know what he hopes to accomplish by doing this, but what he has accomplished is to show that he has no dignity or class. How sad!

According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of local people and involves interpretation and education. Ecotourism aims to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for nature, local societies and their cultures. In a 2015 study of the travel industry by the consulting firm Deloitte, travelers expressed a heightened interest in spending on eco-friendly travel. The study also found that an overwhelming majority of business travelers (95 percent) felt that sustainability will become a defining issue for the hospitality industry in years to come. In fact, in a 2015 report titled “Travel & Tourism 2015: Connecting Global Climate Action,” the World Travel & Tourism Council reported that travelers are increasingly expecting tourism businesses to become sustainable in the same way they expect complementary Wi-Fi connectivity in hotels and online check-ins for air travel. Such information should be encouraging for environmentalists and travelers alike, as data indicates efforts to promote eco-friendly travel are proving effective and increasingly driving travelers to demand that tourism-based businesses meet their demands for travel that’s both rewarding and beneficial to the planet.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.

Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more. A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.
