DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

ThePurinaPetCareCenterfound that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

PAW’S CORNER

Leveling Up: Walking with multiple dogs

Hairball is the most energetic and personable kitty. In her youth, she did gymnastics on my clothes drying rack! Now she’s content to sit on the towels.

Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com Share With Us. Or, Mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I walk my neighbors’ dogs every day a er school. It takes time because I have to walk one dog at a time, then go to the next house, and then the third one. I’d like to make this job a little more efficient by walking all three dogs at the same time. What’s the best way to do this? -- Colin R., Smyrna, Georgia

DEAR COLIN: I can see your dilemma! Walking three dogs separately takes at least one hour, probably two, when you add in the time spent accessing each home, leashing up the dogs and unleashing.

It is possible to walk all three dogs at once, but you have to do two important things first: One, get permission from each neighbor to walk the dogs together, and two, make sure the dogs will get along before you commit.

You may be able to only walk two of them together and the third one alone. And if the neighbors don’t agree, then you’re stuck walking all three separately.

If you do get permission to walk them together, do it on a trial basis. Here are a few tips from professional dog walkers:

• Don’t use retractable leashes when walking multiple dogs. You need full control at all times.

• Leashes can easily get tangled; hold two in one hand and one in the other, or buy a 3-way leash coupler to minimize tangles.

•If one or more dogs gets aggressive or bullying, walk them separately to prevent the problem from getting worse.

•Avoid walking them in areas where a lot of other dogs are present. If all three bolt toward another dog, you may not be able to hang on to them.

BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS

It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms.

Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes.

Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk.

The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus.

Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports.

Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following:

• Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com.

• Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans.

• Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky.

• Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time.

Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, particularly when freshly fallen snow blankets the landscape. However, winter is also a time fraught with potential peril. The same winter weather that makes landscapes so pristine can make roads and walkways - and even being outsidedangerous.

The U.S. Department of Transportation says weatherrelated vehicle crashes killed 6,253 people last year and injure more than 480,000 per year. These accidents most often occur when roadways are wet, snowy or icy. Yet, winter driving is not the only seasonal hazard.

Small Town Shoutout

I wanted to give a small shout out to my small town that in the past few years has done many things for their residents and visitors. From updating/paving the park walkway to adding a disc golf course to new events to redoing a building to a small venue spot, the work hasn’t gone unnoticed by your residents. Kudos!

Wine Sales in Grocery Stores

The grocery stores don’t need to sell wine. They are already dominating the local revenue streams of our communities. Why jeopardize the small wine & liquor stores that help make up our local commercial sectors. It’s just greed on the part of the grocery chains. Write your legislators and say “no” to grocery store wine sales.

Breakfast on a Saturday Morning Brings Me Joy

Handicapped parking

After moving back to Webster 1 1/2 years ago from the Buffalo area, I resumed attending a restaurant in Webster to meet friends and acquaintances from 9:00AM to about 10:30AM to make garrulous conversation. The conversation is all over the place, and it is made up of people in their 70s to early 80s. The number of attendees can vary from 6–12 people. However, adding to this happy merriment is my engaging with a lovely 7 year disabled girl named Delilah. She is brought there by her mom who puts her in a high chair cause she can’t walk and can’t talk too well, but she understands. They sit in a booth about 10 feet down the aisle from our group. That sweet blonde haired little girl has stolen my heart and the others in my group. I wave to her and blow kisses from where I sit and call her name. She then exhibits a smile that enthralls my heart. For the past 3-4 weeks I have brought her candy and dolls. Her mom brings her to our table to interact. Yes, Delilah and friends bring joy to me to start the weekend.

AGAIN, this must be addressed! Monday, a red SUV sped up and quickly pulled in front of me, cutting me off. Then they pulled in the [Department store] (same one as me) and sat in the vehicle for 5 minutes before getting out. My point? In such a hurry to cut me off then sat 5 minutes before getting out. He had parked in a handicapped spot, literally jumped out, bent over, pulled a young child out of a car seat, carried the toddler and briskly walked into the store. PHYSICIANS!! Please do a better job of passing out tags! Seriously, the abuse must stop! This man’s strength did not warrant that close spot by any means. His walking was fantastic. If disabled mentally? Seizures?…he had a young child with him while driving. The excuses must stop, these people know they are abusing this! There must be more spots for the true ambulatory disabled.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

Comedy, Community, and Connection: Kevin Markman Helps Lighten Life in Rochester and Beyond

Meet Kevin Markman, a multitalented individual whose journey intertwines social work, art therapy, educational administration, and the captivating world of comedy.

Markman’sstorybeginsinRochester, wherehespenthisformative years before embarking on educational pursuits that would shape his eclectic career. With master’s degrees in social work, art therapy, and educational administration, Markman dedicated half his career to community non-profits and the other half to school counseling and administration. He supervised the art therapy department at the Hochstein School of Music for a decade, and has had a private practice counseling individuals, families, and couples for 25 years now.

He says two of his children “put the Aww in autism,” and his partner’s three children are adorable as well. He says, “I love art, photography, social media, droning, and travel. I currently have almost two million views…on Google Maps.” Markman’s favorite comedians include Patrice O’Neal, Daniel Sloss, Sarah Silverman, Joel James, Mark Normand, Yolanda Smilez, and Talent.

Markman says he came late to comedy in his 40s, when he happened upon Rochester’s comedy community, taking classes at Writers & Books over and over until he was ready to go to a stage outside class.

en, “It took many more years to get funny,” he says.

What drew Markman to comedy was more than justthepursuitoflaughter; it was a quest to find his community. Comedy powerfully brings people together, upli s spirits, and helps “make the world just a little bit better.” He adds, “ ere is nothing better than when a crowd laughs together.”

Markman performs at awidearrayoflocalvenues and hosts open mics at Writers & Books, Boulder Coffee, and OTR Woodfire Tavern “that provide comics an opportunity to get better and crowds regular places [to] get their laughter.” He produced and performed in some of the most sold shows for the Rochester Fringe Fest with Stand Up for Drag. He’s proud to have been nominated for best male comedian at the ROC awards. And he is proud to have helped raise $20k for the Golisano Autism Center in a comedy show last year (and looks forward to the sequel this year). Markman has also performed in Hawaii, Arizona, Florida, New York City, and beyond.

Collaborating with It’s Just Comedy, the Basement, JokeZoom, and non-profits, Markman looks forward to his tenth year of comedy and to hopefully “keep getting funnier, as self-awareness is essential for comedians, and I know where I stand so that next I can be funny

enough to headline small shows, feature bigger ones, and continue to host anywhere.”

For Markman, the essence of successful comedy lies in hard work, camaraderie, and a relentless pursuit of laughter. He says comedians must keep the mindset that “We are all better if we support each other.” Cra ing impeccable lineups, protecting audience sanctity, and navigating unexpected setbacks with finesse are all part of a comedian’s repertoire.

Markman emphasizes the importance of nurturing supportive communities, both on and off stage, and staying true to your comedic voice. His advice to aspiring comedians resonates with authenticity: find your voice, embrace the joy of performance, and above all, be funny. “If you’re not having a great time, neither will the audience.”

Producing shows for the past nine years has been educational, Markman says. Beyond the necessary humor, he insists comics be friendly to the other comics, the audience, the venue, and the host. Besides that, he seeks a variety of comics for his shows, so there is something for everyone, “the comics are happy, the venue is happy, and the audience is happy.”

Looking ahead, Markman envisions a future filled with laughter, community, and boundless creativity. Whether through therapy or comedy, online communities or global stages, his goal remains steadfast—to spread joy, to connect hearts, and to leave a lasting impact on the world, one laugh at a time.

In the colorful mosaic of Rochester’s comedy scene, Kevin Markman stands as a beacon of laughter, a testament to the transformative power of humor, and a reminder that amidst life’s trials, there’s always room for laughter, love, and connection.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI)

— According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills.

“Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says.

With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken.

For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Find a local dealer/installer at www.iwfa.com.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Treatment Given for Dry Eyes Fails to Improve Condition

DEAR DR. ROACH: I developed chronic dry eyes after having cataract surgery on both eyes. I consulted an ophthalmologist who specialized in treating dry eyes. She prescribed Restasis, but my condition didn’t improve after three months of use. She then switched me to Xiidra and instructed me to use it for two more refills, which lasted for nine months.

At the end of my conversation with the dry eye specialist, she said that she had done everything she could for me. I inquired about the Miebo drug that was recently approved or the LipiFlow procedure. She mumbled something, then said “goodbye” and “good luck.” Was she openly admitting her incompetence?

ANSWER: It’s hard for me to believe that a dry eye specialist wouldn’t know about the new treatments available in their area of expertise, and I can only guess that there was some kind of miscommunication. As a generalist, I have to know at least a little bit about a whole lot of conditions, rather than a specialist who knows a whole lot about just a few conditions.

For most people with dry eyes, starting with artificial tears is usual and effective, but I certainly have had patients use artificial tears many times daily and still have unpleasant symptoms. I also recommend trying to avoid dry areas, especially with high airflow.

Most people with dry eyes have blockages in the meibomian glands, which secrete an oily substance that helps prevent the eye fluid from drying. It also forces the lacrimal glands to make more tears. (This leads to the paradox of people having red, watery eyes when they really have dry eye disease.) Trying to unblock the meibomian glands with baby shampoo and warm water is another treatment generalists like me often try. But when these therapies aren’t working, an ophthalmologist is essential. An ophthalmologist can do an exam to be sure if the meibomian glands are blocked. Among the treatments they have available are the ones you tried: cyclosporine (Restasis), which works well for a minority of people; lifitegrast (Xiidra), which decreases inflammation; varenicline (Tyrvaya), which increases tear production; and Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane), which works by reducing evaporation.

If the problem really is the blocked glands, doctors can also consider more powerful treatments to unblock them. One of these, Lipiflow, is a heat-based treatment. My colleagues in ophthalmology, to whom I refer, tell me that this is often successful, although the process may need to be repeated -- sometimes every six months and sometimes longer. Ophthalmologists can also place plugs to reduce the loss of tears through drainage.

WHAT TO DO AFTER A DENTAL EXTRACTION

After a tooth extraction, your healing time will depend on your self-care during the first 24 hours. The tooth socket will form a blood clot as it heals, and it is important not to disturb the socket or blood clot. Even if the socket is bleeding, do not rinse your mouth out because it can remove the clot. Avoid chewing in that area of the mouth and keep it clean from food and debris. You should still brush and floss your teeth after an extraction, taking extra caution around the extraction site. Following the procedure, spend the rest of the day resting and avoid exercise and social commitments. Try to remain in an upright position to help with clotting. Instead of jumping right back into a busy work schedule following your dental procedure, take some time off and pamper yourself. Your body

deserves it! You can always count on us to provide you with ideas for home care, answers to your questions, and excellence in dental care from a caring staff committed to your comfort, well-being, and sunny smile. Call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment (585.343.4246). Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, state-of-the-art dental office located at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P.S. If the tooth socket bleeds after an extraction, apply pressure with a clean cotton cloth but do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours, after which a saltwater rinse can help speed healing.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN?

(NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place.A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends.

By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love.

Build your advance care plan

• Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated.

• Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so.

• Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own.

• Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings.

Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms.

Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan

As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family.

Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it.

Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care.

The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.)

Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings.

Taking the next step

The FLTCIP is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC. To learn more about the comprehensive benefits and features, call 1-800-LTC-FEDS (1-800-582-3337) TTY 1-800-843-3557 or visit LTCFEDS.com.

Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup® , grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matterinthesoil.Anothersignofa possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.

“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

ROASTED BANANA COFFEE CAKE

Serves 8

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus 1 tablespoon at room temperature for the pan

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 bananas

3/4 cup chopped pecans

3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

11/2 cups unbleached all-purpose

flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan with the 1 tablespoon room temperature butteranddustwiththegranulated sugar and tip out any excess.

Place the bananas on a small rimmed baking sheet and roast for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.

In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on low speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated.

With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few crumbs attached. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

THE SECRETS TO COLD WEATHER ENTERTAINING

Outdoor entertaining in winter may be challenging, especially in regard to keeping everyone warm. The following are some solutions that can help people stay warm and have fun outside.

• Fire pits can be great places for friends and family to gather around and enjoy special occasions. They’re readily available from garden centers and home improvement retailers at a variety of price points. Permanent fire pits can be built by a homeowner or professionally built by masonry experts.

• Outdoor fireplaces add warmth, and improve the ambiance and value of an outdoor entertaining area. Set up outdoor furniture right next to an outdoor fireplace and you have a cozy alternative living room.

• Outdoor heating devices are far more effective than average fire pits or fireplaces. One or two heaters will be enough to keep a large entertaining area warm.

• Guests should dress warmly, but having a basket of throw blankets, scarves and parkas available for extra warmth while mingling is helpful. Use outdoor rugs to insulate from the cold from the ground up.

• Stews, chilis, soups, and other hot foods can help guests warm themselves up from the inside out. Warmed cider, hot chocolate and mulled wines also can be served to help people stay warm.

• Incorporate activities that encourage guests to move around and stay warm.

Here’s a Tip

* Use a muffin pan to make cookie cups for ice cream or fruit. Just flip your muffin pan over, and press dough over the upturned wells. It will puff up a little, but once it settles, they make very nice bowls. I do this with pizza dough as well. Prebake for a few minutes to form the bowl, then fill with ingredients and complete baking.

* If you can put a tension rod in the cabinet under your sink, you can use it to hang spray bottles for extra storage. It’s amazing how much space clears up, and it’s easy to find the bottle you need.

* Travel a lot? Make use of those shower caps by pairing up shoes and using the shower cap to hold them together while simultaneously protecting your clothes from the shoe bottoms. Smart!

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET

principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.

What do we know?

Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.

Who (or what) is at risk?

While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.

On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.

You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s.

How can we help protect the bees?

It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive.

Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home.

Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY

Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior.

While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, people with a parent or sibling with Alzheimer’s disease are more likely to develop the disease than those who do not have a first-degree relative with Alzheimer’s. In addition, those who have more than one firstdegree relative with Alzheimer’s are at an even greater risk of getting Alzheimer’s. Though family history is not necessary for an individual to develop Alzheimer’s, the AA notes that researchers have identified hereditary Alzheimer’s genes. For example, researchers estimate that between 40 and 65 percent of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s have the APOE-e4 gene. APOE-e4 is characterized as a risk gene because it increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s but does not guarantee it will happen. The gene is inherited from a parent, and people who inherit two copies of APOE-e4 from their mother and father have a higher risk for Alzheimer’s than those who inherit one copy of the gene from their mother or father. The AA also notes that researchers have found deterministic genes that cause Alzheimer’s. However, these genes are rare and have only been found in a few hundred families across the globe, accounting for 1 percent or less of all Alzheimer’s cases.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.

Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy,thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

DID YOU KNOW?

Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.

· Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh.Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk.

· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head.

· Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression.

· Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help.

· Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.
