DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between SEAFOOD PAELLA Serves 6 to 8 people 2 Spanish onions, chopped 3 garlic cloves, chopped 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling 2 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes 2 bay leaves 1 pound fresh squid, sliced 1 pound cuttlefish, cut into pieces 1 pound lobster tail meat, cut into pieces Salt, to taste 3 cups chicken stock 1 cup dry white wine 2 cups Arborio rice 2 dozen fresh mussels 2 to 3 dozen fresh clams 1 tablespoon saffron
low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
1. In a large paella pan, sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium heat. Add the tomatoes and bay leaves, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the squid, cuttlefish, lobster, and a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring, for a minute or so more. 2. In a saucepan, bring the chicken stock and wine to a boil. As it boils, add the rice to the fish mixture in the paella pan and blend thoroughly. Ladle three-fourths of the boiling stock over the rice and bring to a boil. Season the rice with more salt to taste. Reduce the heat to low and mix well, distributing rice evenly in the paella pan. Continue to cook the rice for 18 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. While the rice is cooking, heat about 1 inch of water and a drizzle of olive oil in a separate sauté pan, then add the mussels. Steam until the mussels open, then transfer to the paella pan with a slotted spoon. Steam and transfer the clams in the same way. Take 1 cup of the clam water and whisk together with the saffron in a small bowl. Add to the paella pan, and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes more. Serve the paella directly from the paella pan. OTHER DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.

THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture. org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, and even had them blessed and gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272 to 1307, dyed boiled eggs and gave them to members of his royal household on Easter.
ASH WEDNESDAY
APRIL 17TH
Join us to Celebrate the Risen King
The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat.

Use a pencil to sketch your design and then add some color.
Don’t be afraid to use your RUBBER ERASER to design the coolest Easter eggs EVER!
Before the invention of rubber erasers, people used tablets made of wax to remove lead or charcoal marks from paper. Even materials such as sandstone and bread have historically been used to undo writings or scribbles. In 1770, Edward Nairne, an English engineer, went on to develop the first rubber eraser and sold it for three shillings per half-inch cube.

PUPPY PALACE
(formerly Ani). I was found outside in the winter snow when I was a tiny kitten. My “mom” adopted me through Lollypop Farm four years ago, and now I’m a beautiful, healthy, and happy cat. I love to play and am very inquisitive. I have to know what’s going on in every room of the house. I have a stuffed kitten toy that I love. I often carry her upstairs to the bedroom at night and bring her back down in the morning.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about Sherrie’s dilemma in trying to rehome her grandmother’s cats. Should she maybe put a notice on Facebook that the cats need a good home? -Gerry O., via email DEAR GERRY: On the surface, it seems like a good idea. But there are some dangers involved in rehoming cats using these routes. In fact, many publications and some social media sites -- most notably, Facebook -- do not allow posts about pets being available for free or for sale. The danger for pets is that they could go to a home that’s not going to meet their needs, where they may be abused. They may not even go to a home -dogs, puppies and even kittens have been obtained this way by promoters of illegal dog fights, or by others with bad intentions, where they meet a terrible end. For humans, the danger with rehoming via the internet is that the person they’re meeting may be setting them up as a target. Whether to rob them directly or initiate a con job to get even more money out of them, the danger is real. The best ways for Sherrie to get the word out about needing to rehome the cats is to talk directly to friends and relatives, let the veterinarian know and contact the local shelter. More information can be found by searching for “rehoming your pet” at the national Humane Society website (www.humanesociety.org). Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Treat Leg Swelling With Horse Chestnuts? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male who was diagnosed two years ago with superficial venous insufficiency. Venous ablation was considered, but my cardiologist informed me that it most likely would not improve my condition. Therefore, the best treatment is to wear compression socks and elevate my legs as much as possible. I am following my cardiologist’s advice. I recently read a recommendation to take horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) and to look for products that have had the toxic substance esculin removed. I discussed this with my cardiologist’s physician assistant, and she saw no reason not to try it. What do you think? -- M.P. ANSWER: Some years ago, I saw a well-done study showing that horse chestnut extract is an effective treatment for the swelling associated with venous insufficiency. The dose usually studied has been 300 mg of the extract, standardized to 50 mg of escin, twice daily. The side effects noted in studies have been both infrequent and mild, and I have had several patients try it. Unfortunately, my patients’ experiences have not been successful. I don’t know whether that was just bad luck that I had patients who didn’t respond, or whether they did not get an effective medication. One big problem with herbal treatments in the U.S., which are sold as dietary supplements, is that the purity and standardization cannot be guaranteed. They are not well regulated, as compared with pharmaceuticals. I am sure there are ethical manufacturers who follow good practices, but the literature on supplements in general has shown that some products for sale do not contain the amount of the substance they purport to. There is no brand I feel comfortable recommending. Nonetheless, I think it is reasonable to try, especially in combination with standard therapy, which includes compression stockings during the day and at least three sessions of raising the legs above the heart for 30 minutes at a time. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
WISDOM TEETH: A WORD TO THE WISE Generally, a person has four wisdom teeth. Although not everyone develops these extra molars, 90 percent of those who do endure an impacted wisdom tooth that cannot break through the gums. Ignoring problem wisdom teeth is inadvisable. Patients may experience symptoms such as swelling in the back of the mouth, restricted jaw movement, and painful chewing. Although the majority of people with wisdom teeth are asymptomatic, wisdom teeth often cause infections, lesions, cysts, tumors, damage to adjacent teeth, and the development of gum disease. Untreated, conditions can escalate and become serious. During a routine office visit, a dentist can detect an erupted or impacted wisdom tooth and may recommend a visit to an oral surgeon who specializes in wisdom teeth.

www.salmonorthodontics.com DID YOU KNOW? The exact causes of many headaches continues to confound medical researchers. Though the Cleveland Clinic notes that certain environmental factors, such as exposure to allergens or strong odors from household chemicals, can trigger headaches, the mechanism that causes muscles or blood vessels to swell or tighten remains something of a mystery. During a headache, the mysterious mechanism activates specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels, and these nerves then send pain signals to the brain. Harvard Medical School notes that tissues that surround the brain and some major nerves in the brain also can signal pain. HMS also reports that while there are more than 300 types of headaches, only about 10 percent of them have an identifiable cause. And what triggers a headache in one person will not necessarily do so in another. However, HMS notes that people who suffer from migraines, an especially severe type of headache that can increase a person’s risk of heart attack, tend to remain sensitive to the same triggers. That’s good news, as it means that people who can identify their headache triggers can then take steps to avoid those triggers in the future in the hopes of reducing the frequency of their headaches.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

Reborn Find a Fresh Start this Easter BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f grocery store shelves are any indication, Easter is here once again. After two pandemic Easters, it is hard not to feel a bit apprehensive at the prospect of a more “normal” holiday. Yet, despite lingering concerns, I believe many of you, like me, are doing your best to prepare for celebration and time together with friends and family. In many ways, new beginnings are what Easter is all about: new life and renewal. Even nature presents a spring slate wiped clean by winter. Still, starting fresh can be hard, especially after negative events and experiences in our lives. The past two years have brought isolation, unexpected loss, and general upheaval. It will take courage, hope, and a heaping dose of optimism to both recover from the last two years and to leave fear in the past, reborn with perhaps a heightened appreciation of everyone and everything we love most.
Struggling to enjoy this festive season? Try these 9 tips! • Recognize healing can’t be rushed. Give yourself time to adjust, noting that it will take time before a sense of safety and security returns. It could be a while before you feel like yourself again, and that’s not only acceptable, but normal. • Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations. Don’t hesitate to rely on loved ones as you recover. The MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings. • Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establish old routines to restore a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.
• Seek professional health care help if necessary. Putting in the work but still struggling? Contact a health care professional. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe have had to confront issues affecting their mental health during the past two years, and health care professionals are prepared and ready to help individuals overcome those issues as the world returns to normalcy. • Dealing with loss? Discuss the death of your loved one. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help you understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process. • Accept your feelings. The APA notes that it’s normal for grieving individuals to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and exhaustion. Consider speaking with a licensed mental health professional. Such professionals can recommend various strategies to cope with emotions that can sometimes feel overwhelming. • Celebrate your loved one. The APA recognizes that many people find the anniversaries of a loved one’s death to be especially difficult. The APA recommends individuals use such anniversaries as opportunities to celebrate their loved one’s life. Plant a garden in a loved one’s memory or honor them with a donation to a charity they supported. Such gestures can add some positivity to the anniversary and help in the healing process. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. Doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening.
Have a safe, happy, and healthy Easter!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles COVID Phone Scams Thieves and scammers will do nearly anything to help us part with our dollars. In the latest one, as I write this, the thieves want to help me get the free COVID tests the government is sending out. I signed up months ago and received my shipment of four tests. The scammers, however, think I should have more on hand and have offered to help me order them ... for a small handling fee. That handling fee for the free tests? Thirty dollars, and giving them my banking information. No, I don’t think so. We need to be on our toes with these thieves. No matter what topic is on the news, they’ll find a way to turn it into a scam. You might get a call supposedly from a COVID contact tracer who asks too many personal questions, such as for your banking information. You might get a call saying we’re now supposed to get an additional booster and you can be put at the head of the wait list for a small fee. Or you might get a call saying you’re due to get another government relief check, but you have to pay the taxes first out of your checking account. Why, oh why do they target seniors? The answer is that we are perceived to have lots of money and that we’re not likely to report fraud. We’re also, unfortunately, too trusting and too polite. If you don’t recognize the phone number when someone calls, don’t answer. If someone hasn’t left a message, don’t call them back. If someone does get you on the phone and the conversation involves any pressure, time-limited offers or questions about your personal information, hang up. Remember, you are not obligated to be polite! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.

Siren We are so grateful to our first responders and their selfless service. Our community is greatly indebted for their sacrifices. Our question in no way reflects on their service.
S E V RA Congratulations! Congratulations to the Village of Lima for earning the top Clean Energy award (one of only two in the Finger Lakes Region, the other being Canandaigua)! Not only can these clean energy achievements save village residents money, but the changes will also benefit the environment, helping to move the country into a sustainable future. I believe this was accomplished through bi-partisan efforts of the village board, which shows that beneficial things can happen when people work together. I hope other towns will be encouraged to do the same. Grateful A sincere “Thank you” to the gentleman who helped my 88-year-old husband when he fell in the Dansville Franklin Plaza Parking lot on Friday, April 8th. Your kindness was so very much appreciated. May God bless you abundantly. - His Grateful Wife & Family Honest People Thank you so much to the Geneseo Wal-Mart employee who turned my purse in at Customer Service. It had been a long and busy day. I left it in my cart without even noticing and was panicked at not finding it when I arrived home. Your honesty was a breath of fresh air. God bless you! Riga Rec Easter Egg Parade On Saturday, April 9th, Riga Recreation held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. The egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and, led by the Easter Bunny, went up Main Street to Buffalo Road before they proceeded to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. They were then given Goodie Bags, could get an airbrush tattoo, and could guess how many jelly beans were in a gigantic water bottle. Huge thanks to: Churchville Lions and LEO clubs, Arlene’s Costumes, the Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Sue, Lily, and Addison (stuffing Easter eggs!) and, of course, the Easter Bunny! - David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We live near the local town fire station. The siren is still activated and blows on average of 10 times each month. It seems that in this day and age of digital devices to be unnecessary noise pollution. We understand that firefighters and police receive alert messages on their phones or devices. The siren can only be heard in the neighborhood of the fire station and no longer serves a purpose. The siren is extremely loud, disturbing neighbors, sleeping babies, animals, and patrons eating at a nextdoor restaurant. It is especially disturbing to those with hearing aids, auditory sensitivity and other medical disorders such as those on the autism spectrum. To some, it is physically painful. Please consider shutting this down. Dear Shopping Fear, While it is sad that you didn’t feel safe enough to speak up when you witnessed something that was wrong, you are focused on the wrong issues. Perhaps instead of focusing on your fear of fellow citizens, you should ask why they needed to steal? Perhaps the cashier decided to keep quiet because she works a full-time job and still can barely afford to feed her family? Between inflation and stagnant wages, the ability to cover basic needs has become impossible for some fellow citizens. On the other end of the spectrum, there are business owners with steadily rising overhead and restrictions that are making it hard to justify remaining in business. Instead of allowing your fear to paralyze you and complaining, perhaps it’s time to pick a side: report the people stealing or ask if you can help cover their tab. Either one of these actions could have a potential ripple effect of positive change in your community.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
“Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It’s OK to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing.” –H. Stanley Judd
NOW HERE’S A TIP
Start A Career With International Character
By JoAnn Derson
Pfisterer North America, Inc. • LeRoy, New York JOB TITLE: Rodurflex Team Assembler
* A great idea for mini ice packs: Freeze ketchup packets you get from takeout food. They are great for icing small bumps or bug bites.
Starting wage is now $18.25/hr. WORK WEEK: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm JOB SUMMARY: The assembler will be responsible for following the assembly schedule to ensure on-time delivery and to maximize efficiency and quality. This position will then be responsible for the assembly process which includes: following all assembly instructions, measurement and coordination of pieces, cutting rods to required length, cleaning and preparing materials for assembly, assisting in all assembly operations, applying and curing epoxy sealer, and packaging. The operator will also be responsible for maintaining all safety, quality and housekeeping standards in the work area. This is in addition to all other associated duties within the team. Due to continued growth, Pfisterer North America, an international manufacturer of high-voltage polymer insulators, seeks assembly team members. Excellent benefit package
* Spread a teaspoon of peanut butter thinly on a paper plate. Then when the dog is busy with its treat, you can trim its nails. Or sometimes just having it nearby as a promised treat can do the trick to distract your pet. Good luck!
Complete an application at: Pfisterer North America, Inc. • 130 Gilbert Street, LeRoy, NY 14482 or e-mail resume to: jolivieri@lappinsulators.com EOE
* “One of the things I do each spring (and fall) is to go through my makeup and toss the old items. I also restock my first-aid kit and get new bottles of sunscreen and bug spray to keep in my car kit, so I will always have it around.” -- E.A. in California * Love beans but trying to save a little money? Don’t be intimidated by dry beans; just rinse them and chuck them in the slow cooker. Add water according to package directions and cook on low for up to eight hours. After they cool, you can bag them in freezer-safe, zipper-top bags and freeze them for easy use later. * “On a health kick: Step one is to keep a food and activity diary for a week. You can get an idea of what you eat, what times of the day you are overeating and the areas where you can make improvements. Knowledge is power!” -- V.R. in Oregon * J.D. of Massachusetts writes: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and a chamomile tea bag in a pan of medium hot water. Let cool slightly and soak feet for up to 10 minutes. Follow up with foot powder or deodorant.
