PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Pet Place _____________________2
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

EASTER SYMBOLISM COMPLEMENTS THE HOLIDAY Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special. Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hard-boiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of fasting and penance became a way to celebrate Easter. The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to give new life to people after death. In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season. The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb. Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection. The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were originally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all - the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.” Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Elected Officials A village mayor sends out a letter endorsing 2 of 3 trustees up for election. One is elected and the one not endorsed is elected. You made it known you did not want the one as a trustee. I hope this letter was not mailed under taxpayer village dollars. I would not expect you to take such a political stance knowing this could backfire on you. It is up to the trustees to market themselves not you. As the mayor how do you do your job effectively now? We expect you to be fair and not hold grudges. Small towns have clicks but your job is to do what is right for everyone.

Easter Fun! On Saturday, March 27 the Riga Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. All egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and were lead up Main Street by Grand Marshal “Easter Bunny” and then down Buffalo Road to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. There they were met by the Churchville LEO Club members and handed “goodie bags” filled with eggs. They then went and tried guessing how many jelly beans were in
What Teacher Vacation? In response to “Teacher Vacations:” Clearly you are not a teacher and have no idea what is going on with the schools. Most of the teachers are working even harder during this to make sure their students are getting their work done remotely. To say that school tax bills need to be reduced is ridiculous. Schools have had their aid slashed due to the state being almost bankrupt and have had to do so much more with less money. Of course, there probably are a few bad apples who are not really working during this, but isn’t that the case with every profession? If you want to be mad at someone, take it up with the state legislature and governor. Don’t blame the teachers and schools for this mess.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says.

With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Find a local dealer/installer at www.iwfa.com.
THE BIBLE SAYS: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” (John 5:24) “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12) “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” (John 010:14) “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” (John 10:28, 29) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. O. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Stimulus Payment Merry-Go-Round A third round of stimulus payments are on their way. But has your second one shown up yet? Next question: Did you file last year’s 2019 taxes on paper instead of e-filing? If so, that might well be the reason you don’t have your money yet. The IRS got behind on processing the paper tax forms we sent a year ago. If all had gone well, those who were eligible should have received a $600 stimulus check (the second one) by Jan. 29, 2021. The IRS has a specific page for you to check the status of your stimulus payment, but it’s only good for the third stimulus check. All information for your first and second stimulus money has been removed from their website. Confused yet? You’re not alone. Start with www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment and scroll to Get My Payment. Click on it and fill out the information. You’ll go to a page that tells you the status of the payment you’re to receive now, the third payment. If it says that payment information is Not Available, it means you’re not going to receive a payment the easy way (and might be why your second payment is still missing). On the Get My Payment page, click on Frequently Asked Questions to see what applies to you. Even if you don’t normally file, you’ll need to file for 2020 (preferably e-file) if you want that stimulus money quickly. Look for Line 30 on the Form 1040 or 1040-SR. It’s called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you received Notice 1444 or 1444B in the mail from the IRS, it will tell you what figures to use. If you did receive the money but your financial situation has changed and you should have received a different amount, click on Recovery Rebate Credit. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Puzzle Answers This Week FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area
– PEPPERS
(NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.

“Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Stretch. Bodies that have been inactive for lengthy periods of time are inflexible, and lack of flexibility increases your risk for injury. The AAOS recommends that seniors warm up their bodies before stretching with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking. Then stretch gently, remembering to relax and breathe during each stretch.

Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.

Sun Exposure Nearly Does in Guinea Pigs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two guinea pigs. Yesterday, I took them outside to get some sun. When I came back outside about 15 minutes later, they were both lying in their cage, completely stiff, as if they had been dead for hours. I thought they were dead. I brought them inside and was getting everything ready to bury them when one of them stirred very slowly, and then the other. Today, they are not as active, and they aren’t eating and only taking a little water when I give it to them through a dropper. What happened to them? Will they be OK? -- Analia R., via email DEAR ANALIA: Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, cannot regulate their body temperature very well. They should never be put into direct sunlight or a hot room. Your pets suffered heatstroke from being out in the sun, even though it was just a few minutes. This is most often fatal. I’m very surprised that they are both alive. They need to be treated very gently for the next several days. Contact their veterinarian (one who specializes in exotic pets), but do not bring them until the vet tells you to do so. Moving them can be very stressful. Continue gently giving them water through a dropper or syringe a few drops at a time. Place little bits of cucumber, lettuce or melon nearby; these have high water content and some nutrients. Cavies are extremely sensitive to sudden temperature changes, loud noises or rough handling. Be gentle with them and keep them in a comfortable location, out of direct sunlight. Send your comments, tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model.
MAINTAIN PRIVACY IN THE MOBILE PHONE AGE
3. Send a text to stay connected when far away.
Familiarize yourself with the “privacy” feature on the settings of your phone. Adjust these settings as necessary, examining the security settings on each app that requires you to enter personal information.
4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8
ALABAMA HOLLEY FARM
To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.

“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov. 1 - Primus, L. (2017). HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

Indoors or out, no one relaxes in March, that month of wind and taxes, the wind will presently disappear, the taxes last us all the year. ~ Ogden Nash
Genesee County’s Holland Land Purchase Society and Holland Land Office Museum Face Financial Challenge EDITED BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he year was 1894. Genesee County, New York, was growing and changing fast. Realizing the historical significance of area history could be lost, Mary Richmond founded The Holland Land Purchase Historical Society (HPHS). Its purpose? “The discovery, procuring and preservation of whatever related to the Holland Purchase lands, and all lands that had been owned by Robert Morris in Western New York.” For 126 years, it has done just that.
By Fifi Rodriguez 1. SCIENCE: Where is the world’s most active volcano located? 2. TELEVISION: Which 1990s TV drama invented the catchphrase “The truth is out there”?
Today, the HPHS is a 501c3 educational non-profit organization which oversees the operations of the Holland Land Office Holland Land Office Museum Museum (HLOM) and, impressively, its 15,000 artifacts. The HLOM mission is to preserve the past of Genesee County, Western New York, and The Holland Land Company for present and future generations. The HLOM features exhibits on Joseph Ellicott and early settlement, military history, agriculture and business, local artists, and other interesting topics.
3. MATH: What is the total of numbers 1-100 added consecutively (1+2+3, etc.)? 4. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What do the 100 folds in a chef’s hat represent? 5. LITERATURE: In which Harry Potter book does the Whomping Willow make its first appearance?
The HPHS/HLOM has been the overseer of Genesee County’s historical artifacts and the “telling of our history and culture” through education and programs. During this time, it survived two world wars, a depression, and the events that affected our ability to provide our community with “telling the story” of its history. Now, the HLPS and HLOM face serious challenges during the aftermath of 2020.
6. GEOGRAPHY: How many countries in Africa have only four letters in their names? 7. MOVIES: In the animated movie “Up,” to which scouting group does Russell belong? 8. ARCHITECTURE: Who designed the famous Fallingwater House in Pennsylvania? 9. LANGUAGE: What does the Greek prefix “hyper” mean? 10. MEDICAL: What is the common ailment classified in medical terms as singultus?
The HPHS has been deeply saddened by the restrictions of the COVID-19 virus and the resulting inability to hold many of our community events. However, the HPHS is not discouraged by the limited number of programs and fundraisers it can physically present to the public. Instead, the HPHS director has successfully accepted this challenge, developing programming through virtual presentations such as the Artifact Video Series, Java with Joe E., Virtual Guest Speakers, and Saturday Morning Children’s Program. Additionally, its Wonderland of Trees and basket raffle have gone forward, but without the annual fundraising gala. Unfortunately, HPHS was unable to hold its annual antique show, mystery dinner theater, its summer kids’ program, a variety of concerts and speakers, its senior bus tour as well as several other on-site fundraising activities. “Our members and volunteers have always been the bedrock of HPHS/HLOM,” said Don Burkel, HPHS/HLOM President. “Now more than ever, we need financial support to continue programming, virtual events, the preservation of our extensive artifact collection, and to continue representing or history and culture for years to come.” Burkel encourages area residents to generously consider a membership or donation. We’re seeing patients…
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Dr. Matthew Sheldon
Strategies to Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer
24 East Main St (Route 33), Corfu, NY
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old. I seem to be getting more polyps (which are removed). In the past five years, I have gone from one diverticulum to extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire colon. I try to have a high-fiber diet and use psyllium in my oatmeal daily. What more can I do? Eliminate red meat entirely and go vegan? -- J.D. ANSWER: Polyps in the colon confer a higher risk of colon cancer, and the more polyps a person has, the more frequently they should be screened, preferably with colonoscopy. There are some lifestyle changes most people can make to reduce the risk of polyps and of colon cancer. Regular exercise and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are clearly shown to reduce colon cancer risk. Fiber has long been thought to be protective, but the results of trials have been contradictory. Among the many other possible protections to colon cancer, aspirin probably has the most benefit, but aspirin has other risks as well. People at high risk for colon cancer should discuss the use of aspirin with their doctors. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 72 and of normal weight. I have fought high cholesterol and triglycerides for many years and have taken various statins for a long time. My triglycerides still trend high, but my other numbers are now normal. My husband eats a ton of processed meats, all the fat he wants and drinks three to five beers per day. His lipid panel results came back today, and his total cholesterol is 167, his LDL is 90, his HDL is 71, and his triglycerides are 29! He has never been on statin drugs. His only med is lisinopril for slightly high blood pressure. What I am concerned about is a CT scan done as part of a study we participated in. My husband’s results have mentioned calcification of heart arteries over the years, and the most recent says he has “SEVERE calcification of coronary arteries.” I want him to go to a cardiologist, but his family doc says that this is not a problem and as long as he keeps his blood pressure low, he can live a long time with this. He is satisfied with that answer. I’m really anxious to hear your thoughts about him needing to see a specialist. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the calcification and the reason why it happens with such good cholesterol readings. -- D.B. ANSWER: There are several important lessons in your story. The most important is that a poor diet increases the risk for heart disease even in a person with normal or good cholesterol results. Of people with a heart attack, 21% had cholesterol levels that would not trigger treatment with a statin drug. I suspect, but can’t be sure, that your husband has blockages in his coronary arteries; the severe calcification of the coronary arteries is an indicator that it is very likely. I would add my recommendation to yours that your husband see a cardiologist. He has a LOT of work to do at improving his diet, he is drinking more alcohol than recommended and because of the coronary artery calcification, I suspect his new cardiologist would be strongly considering medication treatment to reduce heart disease risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

CURE!!
YOUR FUNGAL TOENAILS
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
Apply at 495 Rochester St., Avon, NY or call HR department at 585-226-8660. WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Acknowledge that you can’t run like a robot. The human body does not do well with prolonged multitasking. One of the strategies for being more productive is to work for an hour to an hour and a half, then take a break.
