Can Cats Eat Easter Eggs?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were coloring Easter eggs a few days ago, and our cat Jake kept begging underneath the table. Now that we’ve got lots of le over boiled eggs, I’m wondering if it would be safe to mix a few into his food?
--
Sarah L., Panama City, Florida
Dear Sarah: Because they’re hardboiled, it’s completely safe to feed some egg to Jake. Just remember to peel the shell o rst!
Eggs are a healthy protein that cats can eat. e American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that they always be cooked. Feeding raw egg to a cat can make it sick due to the potential for bacteria or other pathogens that are on the shell to transfer to the egg.
Whether the cooked egg is boiled, scrambled, poached or microwaved doesn’t matter. Don’t add seasonings to the egg, though. Salt, pepper and other spices can upset a cat’s small tummy.
If you’ve never fed eggs to Jake before, only give him a small amount at rst. Add a teaspoon to his regular food or to the side of his dish. Monitor his behavior a er he eats the egg. If he has an allergy to eggs, he may scratch excessively, act agitated or throw up. If he seems ne, you can give him more next time.
Here’s a cool nding about eggs and cats: Researchers at Purina reported in 2019 that coating a cat’s food in a special egg powder formulation helped stop people from having an allergic reaction to cats! A protein in cats’ saliva is responsible for 95% of cat allergies in people. Not surprisingly, Purina has developed an entire product line of cat food based on this nding, called LiveClear. So, if you su er from allergies around cats, this might bring some relief.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.
For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate.
Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

Eating Out on Mother’s Day
Expect an included gratuity. Restaurants often include a gratuity in the bill when servicing larger parties, such as those that might be celebrating Mother’s Day. The standard gratuity rate is 18 percent, but you may want to go above and beyond if you feel the service is exemplary.
A suburban mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after.

GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs.
Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering.
Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them.
Don’tforgetfun.Youngchildrenmaybemorelikelytoembracevolunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered.
Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning.
Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age.

Drive in moderate weather. The software experts at Geotab note that cold weather affects EV range. Though battery thermal management systems have been designed to keep batteries within an optimal temperature range to minimize loss in battery performance, battery range is adversely affected when driving in extreme cold. Geotab notes that 70 F is the trip efficiency sweet spot.

Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the non-living features of a landscape.Thesefeaturescanincludeeverythingfromdeckstowalkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs.
It’s difficult to know what is beneath the ground without having a property surveyed and marked. Digging without approval can result in damage to gas lines or water/sewer pipes. Always check with the utility company before digging trenches or holes.

Portable vs. Standby Generators
Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features)
Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.
• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.
• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES
Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year.
Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials. Items to include in your automotive emergency kit
Tools: It’s important to include tools in your automotive emergency kit. While a full toolbox might be unnecessary, bring along an adjustable wrench, a flat head and Phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper, and a flashlight. Extra roadside flares and reflectors also should be packed should you need to pull over and address an automotive problem, such as a flat tire. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or with your other tools so you can check tire pressure if you feel your car is not operating as smoothly as it normally does.
HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR
Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

Is AARP Membership Worth Having?
I remember feeling uneasy when the rst AARP envelope showed up in my mailbox. It was one thing to quietly hit the Big Five-O, and it was another thing to realize that I was then eligible for membership in a group for seniors.
It took a little while, but I did sign up. Over the years I’ve stayed. e benets are worth it. Here are a few:
I get a discount on my cellphone plan for having an AARP membership. e list of bene ts and discounts keeps growing, many of them local. Rental cars and travel, insurance of all kinds, owers and groceries, transmissions and tires, paint ... and pizza.
ere’s the Smart Driver online safety course that, once you pass it, could save you money on your auto insurance.
e monthly newspaper, the AARP Bulletin, is worth reading for the information it contains: money, investing, senior news and events in my state, government a airs, Social Security and health. en there’s the bi-monthly AARP magazine, with a wide variety of articles, from dieting and money management to tests that predict cancer, places to retire and much more.
e two publications are worth the $16 price of membership by themselves because of the information they present.
AARP has an app now with good instructions on how to install it.
If you sign up for AARP membership (the rst year is reduced to $12), it will likely take a few months for your publications to start up. If you change your address, the same thing might happen, depending on where in the publishing cycle your change occurs. If you suspect something has gone astray, call them at 888-687-2277. Meanwhile, you can read both of them online at the AARP website: aarp.org.
What interests me the most today is the 25% o discount on a rst order from Silver Cuisine by bistroMD, especially the low sodium meals.

Did You Know? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those who have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cipro Prescription No
Longer the First-Line Treatment for UTIs
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with a UTI on my yearly physical urinalysis, but I had no symptoms. I was prescribed Cipro. The five pages of warnings attached to the prescription scared me! So, I checked the FDA and Mayo Clinic websites. Both said that the “risks outweigh benefits” and it “should not be the first choice to treat a UTI.” But my doctor says to take it, so I will -- 500 mg twice a day for seven days.
Possible side effects include tendon ruptures (including the aorta), nerve damage and more. Scary! I am 71 and in good health with high blood pressure as my only problem, but it’s under control. I wasn’t told if my UTI is complicated or uncomplicated, but I assume uncomplicated, as my blood work, including kidney tests, were all normal. Is this drug safe? Why does the FDA say not to prescribe this as the first choice? -- C.J.
ANSWER: There is a lot wrong here.
First off, asymptomatic bacteria in the urine does not normally get treated, so I wouldn’t have recommended treatment in the first place. I’m not even sure why your doctor ordered a urinalysis -- it’s not recommended as a screening test for most.
Second, I agree with your research that ciprofloxacin (Cipro) should not be the first-line treatment for symptomatic urine infections. Ciprofloxacin does increase risk of tendon rupture very slightly (three to four cases per 100,000 people treated); may damage the aorta (eight cases per 100,000 in one study, while another large study showed no risk); and may cause neuropathy in one case per 150,000.
Resistance to drugs like ciprofloxacin has been increasing. Other choices, like nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole or cephalexin, have more effectiveness with less risk of toxicity. That’s why Cipro is no longer a first-line choice. But it can be hard for doctors to unlearn behaviors.
Usually, Cipro is effective and doesn’t cause side effects, but practicing evidence-based medicine means changing behaviors to reflect new information, even if your personal experience has generally been good. An individual doctor isn’t likely to see damage to tendons, aorta or nerves, but if all doctors changed their behavior, there would be even fewer of these rare events.
When it is used, a short course of ciprofloxacin is normally prescribed for three days, not seven, for uncomplicated urine infections in women. The less a person uses this drug, the lower the risk of these rare but severe side effects. Three days is normally sufficient.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

HOW TOOTH POLISHING WORKS
Teeth are almost always polished at the end of a dental cleaning, but have you ever wondered why it’s done? Dental polishing includes several benefits such as removing plaque and stains, smoothing the surface of teeth, making teeth look shiny and clean, and preventing gum disease. During a dental cleaning, plaque is first removed through the scaling process. Any remaining plaque is removed during the polishing phase using a rubber cup and polishing paste or air polishing with water and baking soda. Polishing helps remove stains from substances like coffee, wine, and tobacco. For many people, polishing is mostly cosmetic, but it also reduces the level of bacteria inthemouth, helpingtopreventcavities and gum disease.
Want to keep your mouth feeling clean, with sparkling teeth and healthy gums?
Start with brushing and flossing at home as part of your daily routine, and continue with regular checkups and teeth cleanings and polishing at our dental office at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We strive to make you feel at home when you visit our practice at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we combine the latest dental technology with a friendly and relaxing environment. Maximize your smile powerbycallingusat 585.343.4246. We’ll give you a reason to smile!

ERIE CANAL STEWARDS GIVE BACK BY WATER OR TOWPATH
BY SUZIE WELLS
Our very own Erie Canal will celebrate its bicentennial (200 years!) in 2025. We in the Rochester area have such a special treasure right in our backyard. We can pick from a variety of quaint, welcoming towns to launch canal trail adventures, whether we go by foot, by bike, or by water vessel of various kinds. ough I certainly enjoy kayaking the canal as well, I love the versatility and year-round adventure of walking the Erie Canal towpath, the pedestrian/bike trail on the north side of the canal.
In the spring, summer, and fall, thousands of people traverse this towpath, but I truly love hiking in all weather. Don’t tell my mom, but I even like walking in pelting rain and sleet. I may end up sopping wet or with a face red from the wind and force, but with appropriate outerwear, it is incredible to experience the joys and power of Mother Nature.
So yes, even in winter, I love walking the canal trail. e canal surface is beautifully frozen, and I get lost in the silence or human noise bu ering snow a ords the winter warrior.
Now that spring is upon us (even if snow may still await us), many more people will take to the path even before the canal waters open for the year (locks operate starting May 19th).
In a recent
assignment, I interviewed Sara Catalano and Beth Walker, Rochester area residents who are Instagram sensations, Two Gals on the Canal, and I learned about the Erie Canal Waterway Volunteer Stewardship program. e Erie Canal needs our help both on the water and on the towpath. So many of us enjoy the beauty of the canal, and they need volunteers to help maintain it for all of us.
e Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor began the stewardship program in 2021 in anticipation of the 2025 bicentennial, aiming for full coverage, 450 miles of stewardship along the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Champlain, and Oswego canals. is program seeks volunteer individuals, families, community groups, and organizations to keep an eye on their designated (approximately ten mile long) sections of the canal.
Volunteer stewards help keep their section tidy, picking up litter, pruning overgrowth, and raking out debris around docks and shorelines. ey report damage, issues, and invasive species they
nd. ey also share success stories and interact with trail users, answering questions about the water trail and nearby communities. Volunteers visit their section at least twice a month between May 1st and October 31st for at least one calendar year. According to the Heritage Corridor, “Iconic trails and waterways rely upon stewardship e orts to develop and maintain destination appeal. It is this intentional, ongoing maintenance and care that make quality trails – and lasting memories – possible.”
Steward rewards include enjoying the outdoors with fun on the trail, meeting visitors from across the state and the world, joining a growing community of stewards caring for one of NY’s most iconic waterways, as well as a trail guidebook and map set and some sweet Canalway swag.
A er the Two Gals on the Canal, Sara and Beth, nished their endto-end paddle of the canal in 2020, Sara says they were “so excited to stay involved with our canal community that it was a natural next step for us to become stewards for a section of the waterway from Newark to Lyons in Wayne County.”
Sara and Beth spent the last two seasons clearing garbage from the waterway and launch sites in their section, chatting with boaters, and getting to know their section’s awesome lock operators. ey send a “shout out to Locks 27, 28a, and 28b!” Sara says, “It has been a wonderful way to give back to our community and to help keep the canal clean and accessible for others to enjoy.”
Volunteer steward applications will be accepted until June 15th for the 2023 season. For more information visit https://eriecanalway. org/explore/watertrail/stewardship or contact the Stewardship Program Manager Mona Caron at mona_caron@partner.nps.gov or 518-237-7000 x204. To volunteer as a towpath steward, visit ptny. org.
Sara and Beth love talking about the Erie Canal and are happy to share their story as paddlers or stewards to groups or schools. Follow them on Instagram @twogalsonthecanal and send a DM if you’d like to connect.

Spring heralds a season of fresh starts and growth -- and what better way to start anew than with a little spring cleaning?
Taking the time to get organized can make all the difference -- and it can make the most cluttered closets and dirtiest corners a breeze to clean. With the right tools in hand, organizing any messy space becomes a mangeable task. You can save time and money by getting cleaning supplies, like dusters, sponges and automated air fresheners.

Poetry features
I love the feature interview with local poets in the Hometown Stories. It seems no one knows about the poets and writers around here, but we really have a lot of quality writers and writer groups in the greater Rochester area. I hope this helps people get out there and enjoy the culture we really have a lot of around here. Happy national poetry month, everyone!
The Kindness of Strangers
Checking out from grocery shopping Saturday, I was $4.00 short. I began searching in my cart for an item to return. Then the cashier said, "All Set." Feeling dumbfounded I looked up at her. She said the couple behind me paid the remainder. The husband said he'd been in my situation before, so they paid the $4.00 I owed. I thanked them, while still feeling stunned. Bless Your Kind Hearts.
Thank You Brockport Emergency Responders
On March 25th when high winds and rain were buffeting our area, a maple tree smashed through our roof. Unsure how to proceed, we called 911, and the immediate response from local agencies was exemplary. We would like to sincerely thank the Brockport Fire Dept., the Brockport Police Dept., and the Brockport Code Enforcement Office. Their quick assessment of the damage and instruction on what needed to happen saved us much further damage and allowed us to move forward.
We were then able to locate an arborist to remove the tree and a contractor to brace and tarp the opening. A sincere thanks to Lusk Tree Service and Emergency Enclosures Inc. for responding on short notice and each doing such a careful and thorough job. The Alvitos

Highway Visibility
Many times while driving you will see highway signs such as Stop signs or Hospital signs blocked by low hanging branches or bushes that have grown larger. Or you may see weeds that have grown up at intersections, making it hard to see traffic to the left and right. Highway department employees - make a concerted effort to see these impediments. Sitting high in your trucks may not give you the same visibility issues that a car would encounter.
Shoppers
If vehicles at shopping centers are required to stop at cross walks why don’t shoppers use them? How about those pushing their carts down the middle of the parking aisles. You’re putting yourself at risk by doing this. Don’t blame the driver if you’re in the wrong.
Ungrateful Wedding Couples
What is with some of the younger generation of wedding couples and newlyweds? Whether it is a family member, friend or coworker - you get invited to their wedding, you attend and/or send a generous gift, then nothing! No verbal or written thank you, no tweet or message of thanks. They are quick to cash your check but with no appreciation or acknowledgement sent! This is so rude, inconsiderate and lazy! What a bad example for the younger generation of couples that do!

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
8,000 people from slave labor camps and death.
What can I do to start prepping my garden for plants I started indoors if I want to be kind to the critters still bedding in the soil? Protecting soil critters such as natural soil bacteria, fungi, and other microbes is a lofty goal for your garden. I would consider covering the garden area with some type of organic mulch (straw, leaf litter, bark mulch, etc.). This will discourage early weeds and help preserve moisture later after your plants are in. The mulch should be easily moved aside to let the area to be planted dry out a bit just prior to planting. When ready to plant your seedlings, dig a hole big enough for each plant, leaving the rest of
the soil undisturbed.
Harry Hellwig, Master Gardener Volunteer
When should I start seeds (indoors or outdoors) if the packages say before or after the last frost? How do I know when the last frost will be if the weather’s always changing?
There is an average last frost date for each plant hardiness zone with May 15 the date for zone 5 (Livingston County); Monroe County is zone 6 with an average last frost of May 1.
An average last frost date is not a guarantee against frost. As this date approaches, you need to carefully watch the long-range weather forecast. If there is no frost nor night temperatures below 45° in that forecast, you will probably be safe to plant. You also need to consider daytime temperatures: if several upcoming days will only have high
temperatures in the 50’s, you should wait a few days for warmer weather.
Memorial Day weekend is a traditional safe planting date. By that time, there very little risk of cold weather that will harm your plants. But check the forecast to be sure.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

TO SCHOOL
Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. Collegestudentsarenolongerjust young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college. Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees.
Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits.

Howhouseholdsearntheirincome haschangeddramaticallyoverthe last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

Many retirees still work even after calling it a career, and opportunities abound for men and women looking to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way.
VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS
Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school.
Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift.
Agreatnumberofcollegegraduatesentertheworkforcewithdegreesthat may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and workinginjobsthataren’tevenintheirfieldsofstudy.Careerandtechnical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
