DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS No business is too small to be a small business. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that microbusinesses, which are defined as firms that employ between one and nine employees, accounted for 75 percent of all private-sector employers as recently as 2013.
of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Gardeners What do I need to start composting? Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. All composting requires three basic ingredients: • Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs. • Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County • Water - Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development.
What are the easiest flowers area and raked it in. After keeping it watered to plant and take care of for on dry days, the plants came up nicely and bloomed with a vengeance. Mrs. McCarthy beginning gardeners? I’ve never had a problem sowing and growing was thrilled and got many compliments from zinnias. When I was a teenager myself, my visitors who admired her carpet of many neighbor hired me to tend, weed, and grow colors. Other flowers I would recommend to her flower beds. In a 2’ x 6’ spot I planted a beginners might include nasturtium, pansies, packet of mixed zinnias in early summer. and sunflowers.
Your compost pile should have an equal amount of browns to greens. You should also alternate layers of organic materials of different-sized particles. The brown materials provide carbon for your compost, the green materials provide nitrogen, and the water I turned over the soil and chopped up the provides moisture to help break down clumps. S E V RA Random Act of Kindness! My 13 year-old son and two friends gathered together some change and took scooters over to Byrne Dairy for ice cream yesterday. As they were counting out their coins, two separate, kind individuals offered them a few dollars to help make up the difference. My son said afterward, “Mom, that kind of generosity makes me want to help other people like those folks helped us.” Thank you, whoever you are, for making a positive impression (and for the ice cream)! Money Well Spent! I would like to thank the beautiful young woman who handed me $5. She said I dropped it as I was cashing out at the Salvation Army in Batavia. Thank you so very much for your honesty! May all good and wonderful things come your way. - Mary Answered Prayers Prayers were answered on April 29th by a Batavia woman named Virginia. We were in need of a puppy stroller for our handicapped doxie named Symon. Virginia called us and said she had a stroller to fit Symon’s needs. On Sunday, we took a ride and met this awesome lady at a fast food place. She was very pleasant as she brought the stroller to us. In today’s world, there are still great and awesome people. God bless you, Virginia! Thank you so much. Symon really enjoyed it. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness! - Symon’s Mom

Bumblebee Prejudice You know, why does everyone hate the bumblebees that are just starting to come out this time of year? I, personally, enjoy seeing the chubby things buzzing about the newest dandelions, sipping nectar and loading their leg pockets with pollen. I feel that too many people get the urge to lay a dust-rising stomp on those cute things when they see them buzzing about their business. Well, I have something to say to you, mister, mind your own beezness! Big Price Tag Our local library proposes spending an estimated $16.6M for a new building. I love the library and use it regularly, as did my children who continue to have a passion for reading, for which I am thankful. While we need to do something to expand the size of our library and its services, this proposal is not it. The community has not had the opportunity to review the “space study” behind the proposal. Additionally, the timing is poor. We are just coming out of a pandemic and facing record-high inflation. Now is not the time to raise the “Library Tax” from just over $800k to $2.5M annually. We need to do something to modernize our Library as well as to expand its size and the services it can deliver; however, I believe there are other options which would better serve our community. I will be voting “no,” but I still love our library. Paying Off Debt Will taxpayers please pay off my mortgage and car loan even though I did sign for them, accepting the responsibility to repay them? What a pile in Washington!

DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage.
The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice.
Oakfield’s Susan Zeliff Shares Calling to Support Veterans & End Food Insecurity BY A M A N DA D U D E K
W
hat do the Warrior House of WNY, The Community Center in Oakfield, and The Goose Food Pantry have in common? The woman at the center of all three: Susan Zeliff. Since the launch of the Warrior House of WNY Inc., Susan Zeliff has felt a call to help others that has only grown throughout the last five years. When Susan Zeliff and her husband obtained farmland in Orleans County, it came with a house on the property. “We had no need of another house at that time,” shared Zeliff. “At the time, we were part of a circle which included several Veterans, and they mentioned how nice it would be to get a bunch of Veterans together to hunt on the property.” The idea struck a chord with the Zeliff family, and in 2016, the Warrior House of WNY Inc. was created and obtained 501(c)3 status. “There are many Veterans in my family,” said Zeliff. “It is really about humanity. Veterans are the ones who have given the most, and at the end of the day, when their job is done, it is still not over. I don’t feel people are always the most respectful about what they have given. Our Veterans often come back different people, affecting their mentality, their relationships, and their families.” Zeliff is pleased to see supporting local Veterans has made a positive impact on her sons. “They hear [the Veterans’] stories and make friends with them,” she explained. “I can see that they are getting it. I feel like this is what we have been called to do.” This has only been the beginning. In 2018, Susan Zeliff came face-to-face with another need, one she also felt called to meet. It began during Zeliff ’s first week substitute teaching at her children’s school. “That first Friday, I learned about the backpack program,” she said. “I wondered why certain kids were receiving these items.” Zeliff was told that this was all some children had to eat over the weekend. “For my kids, this is a 20-minute snack!” she exclaimed. “To think this was what they were going to have over the weekend broke my heart.” Today, Zeliff and her fellow volunteers supply snacks for about 160 students each day. “It transpired so seamlessly,” she said. “Our community has been amazing. They really stepped up! We serve 80 families, and we could not do it without our incredible volunteers and generous donors. They deserve all the kudos!” Initially started as more of a school closet, the food pantry moved to an outside location after COVID struck. However, as its new building is about 6,000 square feet in size, Zeliff plans to incorporate both a community center and a farmers market, as well, making fresh produce more accessible locally. For the Zeliff family, helping those around them is simply what they do. “My family—myself, my husband, and our four kids—have that farmer mentality that is all about giving back,” explains Zeliff. “My husband practices regenesis farming which focuses on putting back into the soil those nutrients which have been stripped for so long. We are not just here for ourselves; we are here to give back.” She contiuned, “I think everyone is called to do something,” she continued. “These are the pieces to which we feel called. Our ultimate goal is to teach our children that this is important. Just because an experience is

not happening to us or to someone we know does not mean it is not impacting us and people we know.” The Zeliff family is now planning a location in Wyoming County where Veterans and their families experience retreats which could double as an event space. “Our goal is to bring whole Veteran families together,” said Zeliff. “At the same time, we realize we have to raise funds. We figure people are already in need of spaces to rent for their events and meetings, so this would be a natural fit and benefit the community, as well.” In the meanwhile, the Zeliffs will host a grand opening for their Community Center in Oakfield at the same location that houses their food pantry: The Goose. “On June 11th, we are going to have our grand opening from 9am-3pm, and everyone and anyone is invited. We will hold a 50/50 and a big basket raffle for which our high school Honor Society is currently selling raffle tickets. We will also dish up free strawberry shortcake!” Both the middle and high school student councils hold food drives for The Goose, and several high school students will be on-hand to help with the grand opening. “I feel time is a greater commodity than the dollar,” she said. “I hope people consider donating even one hour a week to push that goodwill into their lives.” As for all those who volunteer with The Warriors of WNY Inc., The Community Center, and The Goose, Zeliff stated, “Not one person here is getting a paycheck. Every dollar you give goes directly to those in need. I hope everyone visits and sees how impactful giving their time can be.” Enjoy this article? SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Finding the Cellphone That’s Right for You When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-to-face meetings and more. Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them. How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a long-term contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies or if you’ll use it daily. There are a handful of good phones out there if you search the internet for “phones for seniors.” You’ll find dozens of websites describing the various phones now available. Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket. Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. If you’re on Medicaid or SNAP benefits, see if you qualify for the Lifeline discount. And remember: Keep it charged!

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can avoid injury but still get healthy.

National FROG JUMPING D A Y WHICH FROGS ARE THE SAME? National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. Their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches since 1986.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. STATISTICS ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Most people receive MS diagnoses between the ages of 20 and 50.
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
VIRTUAL REALITY GOES DENTAL A recent innovation in dental practices, virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR), can be used in a multifaceted approach. When worn by a patient, VR or AR headsets provide a virtual or digital distraction, especially effective for patients who are anxious or fearful. This distraction provides visual and audio stimulation the patient can focus on while the dental health professional examines and administers treatment. One recent study illustrated that using virtual reality had a significant impact on pain management in patients. It reported a “consistent drop in perceived pain” when using VR. Using VR in a dental practice also helped to create empathy between the dental professional and the patient, which led to a perceived higher quality of care.
No matter how you look at it, the reality is that when pain interferes with the enjoyment of your life, making simple daily acts of living, such as talking, sleeping, chewing, and yawning, you don’t have to just accept it as the norm. Turn instead to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for a treatment plan for a pain-free future. Learn why others in our community make our office at 6 Batavia City Centre the go-to place for comprehensive family dental care. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. The first VR head-mounted display (HMD) system, The Sword of Damocles, was invented in 1968 by computer scientist Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull.

Bontrager’s Auction Center 8975 Wortendyke Road, Batavia • 585-343-4529 www.bontragerauction.com Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Try Rescue Network for Breed-Specific Adoptions
5PM 9AM to at. Mon.-S
DEAR KATHY: Thank you for highlighting this excellent option. The AKC Rescue Network pulls together over 450 rescue groups, dog breeders and specialists in rehabilitation and rescue to save dogs that would otherwise be placed in shelters or euthanized. Find more information about their work at www.akc.org/akc-rescue-network. Breeds are listed alphabetically to make them easier to locate. Fostering and rehabilitation of dogs through the network is somewhat unique in that dogs stay in the foster/rehab until they are rehomed. Breeders and dog fanciers are among the most enthusiastic participants in fostering and rehabilitating dogs. They take on the expense and time commitment to work with specific breeds and prepare them for a loving family. But they also get to know the dogs, their temperament and their needs -- so that they’re matched with the right people. Check out this network and the work that they do. Thanks again, Kathy. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner.com. ●

Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about using caution in the purchase of specific breeds of dogs or adopting from a shelter. Please advise your readers that there is a third option. Almost every breed is assisted by a rescue group, usually handled by breeders. Locating such a group for a specific breed can be done by contacting the American Kennel Club (AKC). We had a wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog that was too small to be a show dog, and a Sheltie whose father was a champion but was still too large to be a show dog. This gives adopters the breed they want and dogs who otherwise would end up in shelters -- and possibly be put down -- get a family instead. -- Kathy F.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Planning a new roof? Choose a light color for cooling benefits. Also check with your home-insurance company to see what discounts it might offer for different styles or options, like upgraded hurricane clips or fire-retardant materials.” -R.E.W. in Tennessee

* Cut a cord of firewood in the spring, and cure it yourself. Store it away from the house and properly care for the wood by stacking it where it will have access to the sun and wind to dry it. Let it season for six months or longer, and you’ll have firewood ready when the temperatures drop again. * “If you’re melting chocolate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper. The chocolate is still easy to stir, but when you take it out, you can scrape all the chocolate off the paper so that none is wasted!” -- A.A. in Florida * “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will keep the wood from splitting. You can even keep a travel-size bar of soap in your nail apron for just this purpose.” -P.K. in New Jersey * Shopping for bagged frozen vegetables? Give them the squeeze test: If the vegetables feel hard and solid, they have thawed and refrozen. Choose another bag. * Keep musty smells out of your linen closet by stashing a box of baking soda on one of the shelves, just as you would in the kitchen. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
