Active Living 50+ ____________________32 Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

G VP S ONLINE POLL: Recently in Batavia a man said a spider was to blame when he flipped his vehicle and landed upside down in a driveway after striking an embankment. Is a spider crawling on a driver reason enough for an accident like this? • Yes, I would still be sceaming! • I would expect some swerving. • I am not sure. • The driver should pull over before panicking. • No, it’s just a spider! Poll Ends 05-21-19 Results from 05-14-19
A 7-year-old boy had his lemonade stand shut down by a New York State health inspector last summer. This year, a bill was introduced in Albany to exempt stands run by children 16 and younger from needing a state permit. Would this be a good law? 78% Yes! Encourage these hardworking kids! 13% Yes, as long as food & drinks are monitored. 2% Either way is fine with me. 2% No, the maximum age should be lower. 4% No! All business must be regulated!

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. TIME IS MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO CAR MAINTENANCE (NAPSI)—Whether changing the oil, replacing the wiper blades or checking the tires, finding the time to perform simple preventative vehicle maintenance is money in the bank. According to research conducted by automotive market research firm IMR Inc., one out of three consumers who put off routine vehicle maintenance do so because they cannot find a convenient time. In addition, millennials and those who own older vehicles are more likely to delay routine maintenance. Expert Advice “There is an old adage that if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making time to perform routine auto care not only ensures a safer, more dependable vehicle, but car owners can preserve the trade-in value and save money by addressing small issues before they become more complicated, expensive repairs.” What You Should Do The most common maintenance procedures to keep a car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air-conditioning. An annual tune-up and wheel alignment are also good ideas.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. Caring for the car’s interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Looks Like Acne, But It’s Not
Louis Baumann, M.D.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have never seen anything in your column
24 East Main St. (Route 33) Corfu and our 2nd location
about sebaceous hyperplasia. I read that it is quite similar to acne and that a person could use an acne treatment to keep the condition in check. Could you give your thoughts on this? -- R.G. ANSWER: Although sebaceous hyperplasia can be mistaken for acne, sebaceous hyperplasia happens mostly to middle-aged adults (or newborns). These bumps appear most commonly on the forehead and cheeks, and have an umbilicus (a small hole) in the center. They are enlargements of the oil-producing sebaceous glands. They happen particularly in people with oily skin. Treatment can be challenging. Reducing dietary fat and using a good-quality skin-care regimen for oily skin may help. Dermatologists can treat these when they are cosmetically important, not because they cause harm in themselves. Although they can be mistaken for basal cell cancers of the skin, they are not cancerous or pre-cancerous. They are mostly treated mechanically, and by that I mean using a surgical technique like cauterization or excision. But these techniques can leave scars. Laser and phototherapy have good cosmetic results but are expensive. Isotretoin, a systemic acne drug with significant side effects, also has been shown in a small study to be effective.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am currently taking 20 mg of Xarelto daily, and have a screening colonoscopy scheduled soon. The preparation instructions said not to stop taking blood thinners, but didn’t specifically mention Xarelto. I contacted the office and spoke with a scheduler, who said those instructions applied to all blood thinners. Previously, I was told that I would need to go off of blood thinners for five days prior to a colonoscopy. Since this was a contradiction to the instructions from the clinic, I have tried to reach out to other medical sources to see if I could get a consensus on what to do, but no one has responded to me yet. There is a strong history of clotting problems in my family. Would you weigh in on this matter? The last time I had a screening colonoscopy was around 2005, and there weren’t any issues. I realize this is a scope and not surgery, but it has me concerned enough that I am considering putting this off until I can get a satisfactory response. -- B.R. ANSWER: Most screening colonoscopies now are done with patients still on their anticoagulants, although for patients on warfarin (Coumadin), it is preferable for levels to be on the low end of the therapeutic range. This is a standard recommendation by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The situation would be different for a high-risk endoscopic procedure, such as removing a large polyp. I have had to deal with this situation many times in my practice, and most often, all anticoagulants are stopped then restarted after the colonoscopy. There are some people who are at such high risk for clots that we use injection medications to prevent blood clots until the night before the procedure, but that is normally reserved for the highest risk of all. It’s a judgment call as to whether to use the injection anticoagulants to prevent clots around the colonoscopy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy ORAL HEALTH LINKED TO PNEUMONIA There are more reasons to follow the dentist’s advice to floss and brush twice a day than simply to reduce the risk of developing dental caries and periodontal disease. According to recent research, poor dental hygiene can adversely affect respiratory health. When researchers studied the health of 506 seniors between the ages of 70 and 80, they found that those with the highest bacteria count living on their tongues were most likely to inhale bacteria that led them to develop pneumonia and other respiratory diseases. In 2015, over 540,000 U.S. seniors were diagnosed with pneumonia, and nearly 52,000 died as a result. In addition to getting a pneumonia vaccine, seniors (and others) should focus on preserving their oral health. We are strong believers in the im-
portance of education and preventive care as key components to optimal dental health as well as overall health. That’s why we are focused on a healthy smile as well as a healthy body for all our patients. To achieve these goals, we conduct thorough exams, review medical histories, and provide instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques. If you are as concerned as we are about healthy teeth and gums, call our office today for an appointment for comprehensive dental care. TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience. 4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING
DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES
Bamboo is a less traditional fencing option that may appeal to homeowners who want to do something that’s both different and eco-friendly. Bamboo grows naturally, which should appeal to homeowners who want their homes to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Bamboo provides ample privacy and comes in various styles. Homeowners should consult with a fencing specialist before choosing a style so they can be certain they choose the most climate-appropriate option.
Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

OTHER HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected development could change the Arian’s perspective on a potential investment. Keep an open mind. Ignore the double talk and act only on the facts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surge of support helps you keep your long-standing commitment to colleagues who rely on you for guidance. Ignore any attempts to get you to ease up on your efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family continues to be the dominant factor, but career matters also take on new importance. You might even be able to combine elements of the two in some surprising, productive way. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A realistic view of a workplace or personal situation helps you deal with it more constructively once you know where the truth lies. Reserve the weekend for someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you Leos or Leonas might be intrigued by the “sunny” prospects touted for a potential investment, be careful that you don’t allow the glare to blind you to its essential details. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend’s problem brings out the Virgo’s nurturing nature in full force. However, don’t go it alone. Allow others to pitch in and help share the responsibilities you’ve assumed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business decision might need to be put off until a colleague’s personal matter is resolved. Use this time to work on another business matter that you’ve been anxious to get to. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships (personal or professional) might appear to be stalled because of details that keep cropping up and that need tending to. Be patient. A path begins to clear soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A promotion could cause resentment among envious colleagues. But others recognize how hard you worked to earn it, and will be there to support you if you need them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Handling a delicate personal matter needs both your wisdom and your warmth. Expect some setbacks, but stay with it. The outcome will more than justify your efforts. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resist the temptation to cut corners just because time is short. Best to move ahead step by step so you don’t overlook anything that might later create time-wasting complications. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the good will you recently earned with that wellreceived project to pitch your ideas for a new project. Expect some tough competition, though, from an unlikely source. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of family extends beyond your personal life to include others to whom you generously extend your care and affection.
CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 23, 1911, the New York Public Library, the largest marble structure ever built in the United States, is dedicated in New York City. It took 14 years to complete. The next day some 40,000 people passed through its doors. The collection already consisted of more than a million books. * On May 25, 1927, Robert Ludlum, the author of 21 best-selling thrillers, including the Jason Bourne spy novels, is born in New York City. Ludlum sold more than 300 million books before his death in 2001.
Good Ideas On Aging Well (NAPS)—May is Older Americans Month! Staying connected to the community is a key ingredient to healthy and successful aging. But for many older adults, staying connected can be difficult. Fortunately, older adults and their caregivers can contact the Eldercare Locator to learn about local programs and resources that can help them stay engaged and active in their communities.
* On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves, only to lose the game on a two-run double in the 13th inning. It was the first time in major-league history that a pitcher threw more than nine perfect innings . * On May 24, 1964, a referee’s call in a soccer match between Peru and Argentina sparks a riot. More than 300 fans were killed and another 500 injured in the violent melee at National Stadium in Lima, Peru.
Programs funded through the Older Americans Act provide older adults with many ways to stay active and involved in the community. For example, exercise classes, educational programs, volunteer opportunities and other health and wellness activities are available to older adults in communities around the country. Need more help than that? The Eldercare Locator can also connect you to local resources designed to help older adults maintain their independence at home, such as transportation, in-home assistance with daily needs, home modifications and assistance with healthy meals. The Eldercare Locator is a free service of the U.S. Administration for Community Living that is administered through the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Contact the Eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday and online at eldercare. acl.gov. Older Americans and the people who care for them can get help and advice from experts.

Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. I started having trouble accessing my e-mail – the man would say, “Hmm can’t locate that info right now.” Then the screen would teasingly say, “Here’s your e-mail!” Then it would disappear. Then pop-ups would appear from an IT with an 800 number – “Please call us, we see you’re having trouble.” I didn’t call them. Suddenly she was on the phone and had contacted me! “I can see you’re having trouble. It’s an e-mail block! We can fix it! We “clean” it and add an antivirus and protection for just $249.99!! What’s your credit card number?” Like a fool, I gave it to them. It’s so much more convenient they told me. I can have new icons with news channels and an icon just for email. What kind of people would take advantage of a Retired United States Army Veteran? Obviously, it’s the kind of people who have no morals or conscience. The audacity and greed of this particular landlord and his wife, knowing what they have been doing for the past 6 years. These two individuals live in our very own community. You know who you are, and you both should be ashamed of yourselves. And why are landlords not held accountable for their rental property? In particular, privately owned residences with apartments or houses. They should be up to code; not every landlord complies with the law. It’s a terrible injustice when a landlord can avoid fines and penalties for providing substandard rental units. Can someone enlighten me with some legal information pertaining to this topic? #CARMA

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

“Where Your Pet is Part of Our Family”
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies. Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)?

Gardeners How do you get rid of moles in your garden that are eating all your plants? - Diane S. If the animals are actually eating your plants, then they are not moles. Moles eat insects and earthworms in the soil. You probably have voles that can look similar to moles. Voles eat plants. Voles prefer the bark of young fruit trees as well as tender stems, foliage, flowers, seeds and fruits of grasses, sedges and many other herbaceous plants. They will make surface and underground tunnels. Cats, dogs, foxes, skunks and coyotes will eat voles as will some snakes and birds.

You can use live traps but it is illegal in NY to relocate the animals so you will need to kill and bury them on your property. You can use a half inch mesh to surround your garden or individual plants but you will need to bury it 6 to 10 inches or so underground and have it extend about 12 inches above ground. Local Non-Profit Celebrates Nursing Excellence Submitted by Ink Young, Director of Organizational Advancement
N
ational Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. This week is a time for everyone – individuals, employers, other health care professionals, community leaders, and nurses – to recognize the enormous contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses. The theme for National Nurses Week 2019 is “4 Million Reasons to Celebrate.” HomeCare & Hospice is a local non-profit organization that knows the impact and the difference that their nursing staff makes in the community every day. “I am grateful for every single member of our staff, but also especially proud of our nurses who deliver compassion and comfort with every visit, every touch. Our nursing team reflects the very core of our mission. Our communities are well served because of the nursing excellence demonstrated every day at HomeCare & Hospice,” says Carol Mahoney, CEO of HomeCare & Hospice. One of the most recognized representatives of the HomeCare & Hospice nursing team is Ronda Ehman, Senior RN Care Coordinator for the organization, who will celebrate her 30th anniversary as a nurse with the HomeCare & Hospice this coming Fall. “Ronda has been with us through so much of our growth and change. She has been a steadfast, caring and patient teacher of others who have followed her path in home care and hospice. It has been my privilege to work with Ronda these many years and to see all the wonderful things she has done to enhance the care and comfort of our patients. She is a treasure,” Carol Mahoney continues. Mrs. Ehman was with the agency when hospice services started in 1991. Over her years in nursing, she has seen the many advancements in medical science. “50 years ago, when I went to school, there was no cure for lymphoma. Now there are treatments and options for a multitude of conditions,” Mrs. Ehman says, adding that a hospice is a different way of looking at the nursing profession. “As a nurse, you are trained to help people get better. However, as a hospice nurse, someone comes to you with a poor prognosis, and instead you are able to help make their final days better and more comfortable. That is the best part of my job as a nurse.” Nikki Wiseman, Director of Patient Care Quality appreciates all that nurses do. “Our nursing staff are amazing in what they do daily. They go above and beyond to keep HomeCare & Hospice patients in their homes or other places of residence safe, symptom-free, and comfortable. They work as a team to cover all patient needs in the very rugged rural hills of the Southern Tier and Western NY. These nurses travel great distances and sometimes go deep into the woods on dirt roads to get to patient homes or cabins. They make visits day or night to make sure that patients have the care they need, even if it is just to comfort a

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY
NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Embrace professional social media. Social media may not have been around the last time you looked for a job, but professional social media sites such as LinkedIn are a vital component of networking in the digital age. If you haven’t done so already, establish a LinkedIn profile so you can begin connecting with other professionals in your field.
Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network.
