DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Fair Housing Statement

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that

All real estate advertised in the Genesee Valley Penny Saver is subject to the Federal Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to advertise any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, handicap, familial status, or national origin, or intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination. affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Prepare to Age in Place? Been There, Done That I read an article the other day encouraging seniors to make plans to age in place. Aging in place means to stay in our own homes as we get older so we can maintain our independence. Planning for it means making whatever changes are necessary to ensure that our homes are safe. Planning also can include surrounding ourselves with a network of people and services for support. My first thought was ... that’s what we’ve been doing for the past two years, and we certainly didn’t have time to plan for it before COVID sent us all into lockdown. Yet here we are ... we survived. And how did we do that? We created our own little support networks, mostly by phone since our meetings were canceled. We checked in with each other when the store finally stocked long-missing items. We baked and left cookies on the porches of those we knew would appreciate them. We learned Zoom and other online video conference programs so we could have face-to-face meeting with family and friends. We beefed up our computer skills, at least enough to enable us to place togo grocery orders at the store or arrange for delivery and to make purchases that Amazon could bring to our door. We roamed YouTube in search of exercise videos for seniors and took free classes of all types. We took up the scatter rugs that could cause trips and falls because we knew that the EMTs who came to our rescue would be leery of COVID and come through the door fully outfitted in biohazard suits. We dared to ask questions and learned that the library will deliver books and the pharmacy will mail prescriptions. All in all, we survived our forced aging in place just fine. We seniors are a tough bunch. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Participate in local events: Local events like holiday bazaars and town festivals provide great chances for business owners to communicate directly with new and existing customers. Take advantage of the chance to set up a booth at such events, and make a concerted effort to reach out to consumers who stop by the booth. The customer feedback experts at Apptentive found that 97 percent of consumers are somewhat likely to become more loyal to a company that implements their feedback. Setting up a booth at a bazaar or festival provides a great chance to solicit feedback that businesses can then implement to retain more customers. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas.

DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come. Q &A with the

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners Are there plants that help with mosquitos? Make your garden work for you in the quest to combat mosquitoes by planting varieties that naturally deter them. Options abound for mosquito-repelling plants, although there’s minimal research to prove they actually work reliably. Thus, you may need to experiment with several to see what might work for you. Popular choices include mint, lemon balm, marigolds, basil, chrysanthemums, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, catnip, peppermint, sage, and more. Another strategy is to spread cedar mulch throughout the garden. It offers double benefits by deterring

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County mosquitoes with its scent and soaks up and retains moisture in the soil. Why are my Cherry tree branches dying? It most likely has Black Knot disease. Black Knot is a disfiguring and potentially lethal disease of trees and shrubs in the genus Prunus. This genus includes stone fruits such as wild, fruit-bearing and ornamental plums and cherries. The disease is present only in the woody parts of trees, occurring most frequently on twigs and branches and sometimes on trunks and scaffold limbs. The warty swellings first become visible in late summer or the following spring

on new shoots. At first the knots are somewhat greenish and corky, but with age they become black and hard. When they occur on twigs and small branches, prune out the infected branches about 4 inches below the knot. On large branches and trunks, the knots can be cut out. This is done most successfully during August when the fungus does not extend far beyond the visible swelling. Be sure to remove any infected branches in the winter if black knot returns after August. Remove the diseased wood and about 1 inch of clean wood around the knot. It is best to remove knots before growth begins in the spring and to take them away from the orchard, as they will continue to produce spores for several weeks after re-

moval. Be sure to destroy infected tissue to limit spread of spores. Unfortunately, this disease is hard to control and might require the replacement with a tree not in that family or susceptible to Black Knot.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been waiting more than three months to get my dog “Maisie” in for a regular checkup and shots. The veterinarian’s office says they are running behind and had to delay her appointment. Talking to a friend across the country this week, I learned that they are waiting months to get their pets to the vet as well. Is this a national trend? -- Cheryl K. DEAR CHERYL: Unfortunately, it is, especially in major metropolitan areas. The wait for a vet appointment was already lengthening before 2020. After months of waiting, pet owners are all trying to get caught up on checkups and vaccinations. Many more people adopted pets during the lockdown in 2020 to keep them company. And many pandemic restrictions, such as building occupancy limits, are still in place. Add to this a chronic shortage of veterinarians -- an industry that sees some 2,000 vets leaving every year, citing a poor work-life balance. That’s twice the rate of physicians quitting their profession, says the American Veterinary Medical Association. And the lower availability of vet appointments can be seasonal. For large animal vet practices (which deal with livestock, horses, cattle, etc.), spring is their busiest season with calving and foaling taking place. The warm weather reminds pet owners to take their companion pets to the vet as well. Until the wave of catch-up appointments subsides, just be patient. Keep the appointment that is already set with the veterinarian and schedule Maisie’s checkup for next year, if possible. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Local Mother of Six, Maria Wehrle, Supports Fellow Moms through MINO BY SUE LEDOUX

D

espite Rochester’s poverty level, we are a community with a generous heart. Sometimes, it takes only one person with an idea and a tremendous drive to tap into that generosity to make a difference.

Recently, I spoke with Maria Wehrle, Rochester area mom, founder and director of Mothers in Need of Others (MINO). In 2004, she took a course to discover her “spiritual gifts.” Maria hoped it would help her learn what she might do next with her life. It was the last day of class, and Maria, a mother of six, had not gotten any answers yet. Then a woman stood up, panicked and in tears. “She just found out she was having triplets,” said Maria. “I only had mine one at a time and didn’t know what it was like to have a bunch at once. I knew what it was like to have a large family. The emotional and financial stress is a real challenge. My heart went out to this lady...I was trying to figure out how I could help her. As I cooked dinner that night, I saw M-I-N-O in the back of my mind.” Mothers in Need of Others (MINO) started simply. “I gathered 14 women from my church,” said Maria. “We made meals, collected car seats, strollers, anything for moms in a crisis in our church.” Two years later, Maria received a call from someone in Rochester. Would she be willing to help moms in the inner city? She did not hesitate. “I packed up my car, and we drove around, delivering things to moms.” Because of the number of families for which MINO now provides, it is no longer able to deliver supplies directly to families. Instead, MINO works with case managers who make these deliveries during their regular visits to their clients. Maria explained, “We are a short term, emergency assistance program. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the mom to be connected to services prior to reaching out to us. If she isn’t, Maria Wehrle in the resource room that’s where calling 211 can help with referrals to programs with case managers. The case manager not only acts as her advocate in accessing supplies from us, but he or she can also assist the client/mom in making arrangements to secure extended services, if those are required. We also act to ‘fill in the gaps’ when that person applies for WIC, for example, so that her baby isn’t without diapers, baby food, or formula while the paperwork is being processed.” Case managers pick up the supplies for their clients at MINO headquarters, and take them directly to their clients’ homes, thus overcoming three common barriers to access:

wrapped feminine products and nursing pads, unopened, unexpired formula and baby food, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and baby gear (strollers, pack-n-plays, highchairs, activity seats, etc.) “People are so generous, especially in Rochester... all you have to do is make your needs known.”

Facing economic challenges, MINO needs your help!

MINO, like many agencies, is struggling now to stay afloat and help the many who rely on it. “We partner with 141 agencies, churches, schools, and daycare programs, providing them with emergency supplies for families they work with who are in crisis situations. Only a handful of those programs reciprocate with supplies,” explained Maria. She continued: “A small number of agencies, churches, schools, and the Childcare Council have stepped up to share resources, make donations, and do donation drives for us. There were also a few very helpful grants over the past couple of years, too. What we need is funding on a consistent basis. We are struggling to figure out how to find sustainable funding sources so we can survive.” Despite the challenges, MINO closed for only one month during the worst of Covid to restructure their distribution process, utilizing a “no contact” phase. They repacked distributions that would go to “We partner with 141 families once restrictions were agencies, churches, lifted. With inflation, the cost for MINO to fill its shelves for a month (once $300-$400) is now $1,000. And those shelves are looking bare indeed. Unless MINO can raise $16,000 for rent, salaries, and products to fill its shelves, it faces a dim future.

schools, and daycare programs, providing them with emergency supplies for families they work with who are in crisis situations.” - Maria Wehrle

To support MINO, be it donations of items, money, your talents, or if you or someone you know needs help, email MINO at mothersinneedofothers@ gmail.com or call (585) 348-8596. For MINO, it all boils down to people reaching out to others with love.

Mom may not have transportation to get to MINO.

Moms do not need to find babysitters while they are gone to get supplies.

It protects their privacy and is convenient. They usually receive 3 or 4 heavy bags of donations, and don’t need to struggle to get them home.

CHOOSING THE BEST BRUSH With so many options available, choosing the right toothbrush for your specific needs can be daunting. Follow these easy guidelines to pick the best brush. Consider the size of the brush head: the best size for most adults is one that’s one inch long and half an inch wide. Choose a brush with good grip for better control. Bristles come in soft, medium, and hard; for most people, soft bristles are the safest choice. Straight bristles can do more harm than good, so always go for rounded bristles. Most importantly, choose a brush that’s ADA or CDA approved—this ensures that the bristles are safe and secured, the handle is sturdy, and the brush helps reduce plaque and gum disease.

Walking Difficult After Visit to Bowling Alley ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My partner and I are in our 60s, exercise regularly (three to five times per week), eat a well-balanced diet and are of average weight. Recently, we went bowling for two games and found ourselves sore in the area right below our buttocks. We were very sore for several days, making walking difficult, especially up and down stairs. What would have caused this area to get so sore? We named it “bowling butt” for lack of a medical term. -- M.B. ANSWER: Starting a new activity will often cause people to overuse some muscles that aren’t used to the strain. Bowling involves forceful extension of the thigh, which is the gluteus maximus muscle, as well as other muscles in the hip to maintain stability. Two games were enough to exhaust that muscle, and the untrained muscle will often suffer small tears, which take days to heal properly. The fact that you were sore with activities involving thigh extension helps confirm the diagnosis. Some people think it’s lactic acid in the muscle, but that is gone after a few hours. Naming a disease is serious business, and I did a look for similar names in the literature. I did find “Wii butt,” a pain sensation after playing games, including bowling, on the Wii video game system, but none for actual bowling. I’m not sure “bowling butt” will catch on, however. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Though no one knows the true origin of the first scavenger hunts, which evolved from folk games, Elsa Maxwell has been credited with the creation and popularization of the scavenger hunt in the 1930s. Elsa Maxwell was dubbed “hostess with the mostest” and had an affinity for throwing luxurious and entertaining parties. She often organized scavenger hunts for the guests that involved roaming around town, seeking objects from a list. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Turn the greenhouse into a clean house. Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring.

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP Address allergens. Some people may trace their sleeping difficulties to allergies. Dust and pollen in the bedroom can make for a disruptive night’s sleep. Wash bedding once per week in hot water if dust mites are proving problematic. If pillows cannot be washed, dry them using high heat to kill dust mites. In addition, cover the mattress in a mattress protector that guards against allergens and dust mites. If pollen is finding its way into the bedroom, always keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

* “I have a plastic cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for my baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot.” -- P. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms, because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -- Janey R. via e-mail * Sprinkle baby powder in dish gloves to help them slide on in an instant.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

Honesty at Work As I was standing in line in a Canandaigua store, a customer ahead of me purchased an item costing $50.00. The cashier picked up only the two $20 bills. The customer picked up the $10 bill and left the store with her item. Moments later the customer came back and paid the remaining amount. She taught my daughter that honesty is always the right thing to do. She did the right thing, and it was definitely noticed. Missing Parts Please beware of thieves who steal catalytic converters from cars parked in public parking spaces next to apartment buildings. It happened to me while borrowing a friend's 2000 Honda Accord. When I parked it on Tuesday, May 3rd, it was purring like a kitten. The next morning, I started it, and it was as loud as an outboard motor. This was in the middle of [local town], a well-guarded suburb. For a thief, this part would net $100-150. For the owner, it will cost $2,300 because of the costly connections and labor for a new catalytic converter. The salvage yards I called all swore they don't deal with catalytic converters. What will they steal next? I suggest using a garage or carport. - Sadder but Wiser Contact Us Why do so many businesses, services and stores even have in their sites a “contact us” form where you can ask a question or make comments? Some give you the runaround just to find the form. Others don’t respond to questions or return an answer. Recently, I submitted one asking a simple question. Nothing. I submitted it a second time, still nothing. I finally went to their competitor and got the answer I was seeking. I’m sure they’ll probably use the COVID excuse. Well, word of mouth carries a lot of weight, especially in a small community. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Event Success! On Saturday, May 14th, the Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley (HBB) held another of its bimonthly hygiene bank events. It was a success, serving several area families and individuals in need. Thank you so much to the many wonderful volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this event possible with everything they do from donating goods to setting up the personal and household cleaning products to assisting guests throughout the event to completing inventory and clean up afterwards. You are all a tremendous blessing, and the HBB is very grateful for your hard work and service. God bless you!

Changing Times Some people live only in the past. Those who believe in no gun control are, I believe, some of those people. When this country was formed, guns were a necessary part of life. Many, if not most, people depended on their guns to provide food for the table and to defend themselves against wild animals. There was also the threat that the country would be attacked by another country. While that is always a possibility, even today, I would have to say that guns would be of little help now since there are much more effective weapons in today’s world. Today, guns are more of a problem in America than a solution. Every day on the news, there are stories of innocent people being killed or injured by guns. Too often, stories tell of mass shootings with young children being the victims.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS

HELP WANTED

Arby's Batavia Apply Within

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association.
