Catholic Charities, Community Action and Salvation Army Assist with Utilities, Food & Housing/Rent Funds now available for a limited time. BY LAURA E. JACOBS, VICE PRESIDENT

C

atholic Charities’ Genesee County office, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee and Salvation Army Batavia Corps are joining together to meet the needs of the local community when it comes to providing basic emergency assistance as a result of the ongoing pandemic. All three organizations received Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds to provide basic emergency assistance, including utility bills, food and rent/housing costs. The funds are only available for a limited time for residents of Genesee County.

“While there are currently no disconnect notices or eviction notices for renters with moratoriums in place, the day will come when the moratoriums, which have been in place throughout the pandemic, will be lifted,” said Lisa Wittmeyer, case manager of emergency services, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee. “Please don’t wait for the notices to receive help. We’re here and able to assist those in need now.”

“The ongoing pandemic has impacted all of us, including many who may not have needed assistance before,” said Kelly Grimaldi, Tri-county District Director, Catholic Charities. “We are ready to help meet basic food needs, providing food vouchers to shop at a local grocery store to choose the items needed to supplement items available from food pantries. In addition, our staff is always available to provide hope for both individuals and families by connecting them with other programs and services they may need.”

“It’s very concerning that people are in the mindset that they can wait or do not have to pay their rent,” said Todd Rapp, Coordinator of Emergency Disaster Services, The Salvation Army. “Eventually, evictions will happen and those in need should not wait to reach out to us for help. We have funds available to assist them now.”

Hoe while it is spring, and enjoy the best anticipations. It is not much matter if things do not turn out well. ~ Charles Dudley Warner, “Preliminary,” My Summer in a Garden, 1870

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * There are many fancy cleaners for sale for wood and laminate floors. Truth is, all you need is regular sweeping and a clean, damp mop. Never use harsh cleaners on wood, and do not use too much moisture. * D.D. in Missouri keeps morning cereal crisp by using two bowls. Bite by bite dipped in milk is the perfect remedy for avoiding a soggy spoonful! * Use white chalk to fill pin holes in the wall before painting. You can also use this tactic to hide holes if you are unable to paint the white walls of a rental. It simply fills the hole, making it “disappear.” * Save prescription medicine bottles and use them to sort beads or findings for beadwork or jewelry making. Bonus: Store the bottles upside down in a plastic storage bin so you can see what’s in the bottles without having to sort through all of them. * Add chocolate syrup to your cake mix for a deliciously deep flavor when making a chocolate cake. * Check your pillows: Press into the pillow at the spot where your head rests. If the pillow doesn’t spring back when you remove your hands, it’s time to replace it. * Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut or a pinch of baking soda. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

............................. Shari Rapone

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

IMPLANT SUPPORTED DENTURES Conventional dentures that use adhesives may not always be ideal, but a full set of dental implants may not be an affordable option for everyone. This is why many people are choosing implant supported dentures (ISDs) as a middle of the road option. ISDs do not require adhesive. Instead, they simply snap into the dental implant, which holds them securely in place but still allows for them to be removed for cleaning. ISDs also allow the wearer to enjoy foods such as fruits, fibrous vegetables, corn on the cob, and other foods that are not recommended with traditional dentures. They even have a benefit over full dental implants in that they preserve more bone and gum tissue.

We believe in staying on the leading-edge of dentistry, which is why we keep up-to-date on the latest dental techniques, materials, health studies, and therapies to ensure all our patients receive the very best in dental health care. If you are looking for a family dentist who understands the needs of everyone in your family as individuals and patients, we welcome you to stop by BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL and get acquainted. We’re sure you’ll leave with a good feeling about our practice. For an appointment, please call us at 6 Batavia City Centre, 585.343.4246.

P.S. When getting implant supported dentures, there is a period of about four months after the implant is inserted when traditional dentures are worn to allow for full healing.

excellent health. I run or hike 3 miles or more on most days, and road bike, swim and weight train. I eat sensibly, and I don’t drink, smoke or take drugs. I don’t drink coffee or even take aspirin for pain. My last physical exam showed no problems, and my blood and urine tests were fine. Recently, I was diagnosed with a small tumor inside my right kidney. It’s about a 2.5 cm solid mass with no rough edges at this time. The MRI showed “a 2.4 cm mildly enhancing solid mass concerning for a renal neoplasm.” It also showed that the left kidney has a single 1.2 cm cortical cyst over its upper pole aspect. Please explain what this means. The options for treatment are to completely remove the kidney and see if it is cancerous or just monitor the tumor and see if it continues to grow and remove later. The doctor said the whole kidney has to be removed, because of the central location of the tumor. The doctor also said a biopsy is not a good idea where the mass is located for fear of releasing cancerous cells within the kidney that could move quickly throughout the body. Removal is a drastic measure, no doubt, to test for kidney cancer. Should I just monitor and wait to see what the tumor does or operate and have the kidney removed. What medical action do you suggest that I do? -- B.J.R. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your kidney tumor. A solitary kidney mass in a man in his 60s is always suspicious for kidney cancer. A 2.4 cm tumor is large enough to provoke serious concern: In a recent study, in people who had their tumors removed, 83 percent of tumors that size were kidney cancer. Because of the location, a partial removal of just the mass is impossible, so the choice between watching and waiting versus taking the whole tumor out should take into consideration the very high likelihood that this is cancer. Kidney cancer can spread to other organs. If you were my patient, I likely would advise surgery. If you were not a good risk for surgery (say, in your 80s with multiple medical problems), then I might consider watchful waiting. In your case, I think going for surgery is the wiser course. Being so healthy will make your treatment much less risky. ***

CURE!!

Salmon Orthodontics Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence & self-esteem.

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In 1631, royal printers Robert Barker and Martin Lucas published a Bible containing the typo “Thou Shalt Commit Adultery.” As if that weren’t embarrassing enough, another misprint, in Deuteronomy, substituted the word “greatnesse” with “great-asse.” Barker and Lucas were fined 300 pounds and lost their printing license. Less than a dozen copies of what came to be known as the “Wicked,” “Sinful” and “Adulterous” Bible are known to exist today and are highly prized by collectors.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

ROOFING & SIDING INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

The invisible systems in a home often are taken for granted. When such systems are working as expected, daily life moves along smoothly. However, when a system goes awry, it can negatively impact routines and may create a dangerous home environment. This is especially true when something goes wrong with a home’s electrical system. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of residential fires. Many homeowners, particularly those who live in older homes, might be living in properties that have outdated electrical systems. The experts at Lowes ProServices state that having old wiring and/or insufficient amperage in a house can endanger residents. It also may damage appliances and make it difficult to sell a property in the future. It can be difficult to gauge exactly when to overhaul an electrical system. Unless circuits routinely trip or lights often dim, homeowners may put off the work. But degrading wires or overextended circuitry can pose a fire risk, so it is best to address electrical systems promptly. Page 23

Your Choice You don’t want to be segregated if you choose not to vaccinate? If you live in a community and want to be part of that community, then you have to follow the rules. Your choice indeed. Don’t vaccinate if you don’t want to, but go live in seclusion because I certainly don't want you putting my family, community, or me at risk by your choice.

S E V RA Hospitality at the ballpark Waiting in line at Frontier Field on the first day tickets for the 2021 season would be sold, we were among several people who got there early in order to get our favorite seats. A good half-hour or so before the 10 a.m. opening of the ticket windows, Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason emerged from his office carrying a glass coffee pot and a stack of cups. He went down one line and up the other, offering free coffee to anyone who wanted a bit of refreshment. When a computer glitch extended the wait by several minutes, people were still in a good mood because of Dan’s kind gesture. Thanks, Megan! I went to Brockport to go grocery shopping and have to say hats off to Megan. She sliced my turkey and roast beef at the deli section. Nowadays, a lot of people just don’t seem to care about the customers. Perhaps they are burnt out. Still, it is such a pleasure when you do run across someone who does their job not only well, but with a smile on their face, also. Thanks! Thank you, Brockport lab! I went to the Lab in Brockport on Tuesday, May 4th. I don’t look forward to getting my blood drawn, but then who does? I have been going to the Lab in Brockport for several years because they do such a great job. They draw the blood quickly and painlessly. I have bad veins, so it is no easy task, plus the fact that I am Chicken Little. This time, I had a woman from Russia who did the draw. I apologize for not recalling her name. She did such a great job that I didn’t have any marks or black and blues, which at times has occurred at other places when other phlebotomists have drawn my blood. Once again, Brockport Labs did an exceptional job. Thanks!

Unspoken Since when is it acceptable to perpetuate racism? The Asian American community has been - and continues to be - victimized, and what do we do? We give a racist woman a platform to spew falsehoods and hateful speech towards an entire marginalized community for everyone in [local] county to read. Shame on those who don’t see an issue with it. Remember Customer Service I went to a well-known chain store for some odds and ends. I went to the checkout counter where the cashier was finished with his customer. He and she were just chatting, like they had all the time in the world. I waited patiently as they continued with their conversation. The lady glanced over at me, and did seem to look uneasy, as the cashier continued to speak with her as if I were invisible. Finally, I had to say something. I remarked on how I would like to get in on their conversation, but could he (the cashier) just check me out. He was the most unpleasant cashier I have seen in a while. Cold as ice. In fact, it was almost like he was mad at me for interrupting his conversation. Next time you know someone at your check out counter and you want to talk to them, just tell them that you will continue the conversation after you check out the customer behind them. That is what you are getting paid to do. And get rid of the attitude. A smile would go a long way. Taxpayers Hold our officials accountable! Kitchen aprons A local village bakery allows its workers to wear their aprons while running all sorts of errands in our town. From banking to delivery right down to pumping gas for their delivery van. Food service 101 is to remove apron when not food prepping. That means bathroom breaks too!

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Favorite Foods Missing From Grocery Shelves You’d think that the grocery store shortages would be long gone by now. But no ... they never completely went away. Only the missing items have changed. My neighbor and I laugh and compare notes about “the toilet paper of the month,” recalling the long period when getting name-brand toilet paper was impossible around here. At this point, the missing item is a type of soup, which has been gone for nearly four weeks. A particular flavor of baked beans, gone. Nosalt canned green beans, vanished. Jasmine rice, steel-cut oatmeal, low-sodium tuna ... no more. Even the tags are missing from store shelves in all three shopping locations here, and managers can’t order them. My neighbor and I weren’t laughing today, however, when we realized it had been a full month since a certain chocolate bar had been seen on shelves in any store here. “We’re in trouble,” she said, and she’s right. “Do we dare order it online?” she wondered? We’re considering doing just that. The worst, though, was when I couldn’t find the one cat food my elderly kitty is supposed to eat. For health issues, she can’t have anything else. I finally called the manufacturer and was told that they were unable to produce it due to lack of ingredients. Eventually, and just in time, it became available and I ordered a three-month supply. But it’s something I now track on a weekly basis. Here’s what I found after contacting a few food manufacturers: Many of them are cutting out, forever, products that were slow movers. If certain food items have vanished from your store’s shelves, it might be time to do an online search. Look for “discontinued foods.” You could discover that it’s time to stop looking because those items just aren’t coming back.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Notice of Application May 19, 2021 Cider Solar Farm Genesee County, New York Hecate Energy Cider Solar LLC (Applicant) hereby provides notice that, on or about May 27, 2021, it intends to file an Application with the Office of Renewable Energy Siting (ORES) for a permit for the siting, construction and operation of a major renewable energy facility pursuant to Section 94-c of the New York State Executive Law. The Applicant proposes to construct an up to 500 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic (PV) solar energy generating facility, referred to as the Cider Solar Farm (the Project), in the Towns of Elba and Oakfield, Genesee County, New York. The Applicant is publishing this notice at least three (3) days prior to the filing of the Application, in accordance with 19 NYCRR §§ 900-1.6(c). A Notice of Intent to File an Application was published in accordance with 19 NYCRR §900-1.3(d) on February 26, 2021. Brief Project Summary The Project is a proposed solar-powered electric generating facility in the Towns of Elba and Oakfield, Genesee County, New York. The Project is located on an approximately 3,000-acre area located north-centrally in the County, approximately five (5) miles north of the City of Batavia. Lockport Road bisects the Project from east to west, while State Route 98 traverses the eastern portion of the Project. Project components include photovoltaic solar panels, inverters, buried electrical collection lines, gravel access roads, security fencing, and a substation. If the Project’s application to ORES for a permit is approved, the Project will interconnect to an onsite New York Power Authority (NYPA) 345 kilovolt (kV) transmission line. Project components will be located on leased private land. It is anticipated that the Project construction will commence in 2022, with commercial operation commencing in 2023. The Project is a zero-emission, renewable source of energy that will assist the State in meeting the goals of both the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and State Energy Plan, which include obtaining 70% of the State’s energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030, and 100% of the State’s energy from clean sources by 2040. Project benefits also include increased revenues to local tax bases, temporary and permanent employment, and purchase of local goods and supplies. While the construction and operation of the Project may result in certain temporary and long-term environmental impacts, as will be fully described in the Application, the Applicant has designed the Project to minimize impacts to land and the community by avoiding forestlands and wetlands to the extent practical. Applicant Representative The designated contact person for this Project is: Hecate Energy Cider Solar LLC Harrison Luna, Development Manager 621 W Randolph Street Chicago, IL 60661 (833) 529-6597 CiderSolar@HecateEnergy.com The website established for this Project by the Applicant is www.cidersolarfarm.com. Availability of Funds Pursuant to 19 NYCRR §§ 900-1.4(a)(8) and Subpart 900-5, upon the filing of the Application, the Applicant will provide funding to be disbursed by ORES to local agencies and potential community intervenors to defray expenses for experts, including attorneys and consultants, associated with participating in the Section 94-c process. Within thirty (30) days of the date of the filing of the Application, any local agency or potential community intervenor seeking funding from the local agency account must submit a request for initial funding to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting at 99 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York 12231, Attention: Request for Local Agency Account Funding.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Donate Locally to Shelters, Rescues DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent article on animal shelters. It was spot on with advice for donors. Many rescues do not advertise locally, but online through Petfinder. com and AdoptAPet.com. Local advertising and signs usually result in animals being deposited on a rescue’s property without invitation or contact. If people want to help, please research your local area and find a rescue. Contact them and see what they need. Most rescues need specific foods, medicines, etc., and always need monetary contributions. These are the best ways to help out, through contact and conversations with the people involved. Local animal control and shelters can use help too. One of the most important things to remember is that almost all rescues are nonprofit, charitable entities. All donations, money or otherwise, go completely to helping out the animals. There are no “salaries” for the persons running the organization as there are with so many other “charities.” Just research online the salaries paid out with contributions from the public for many common charities that many donate to each year. Do I speak from experience? Yes. My wife and I have been doing dog rescue for 16 years, ever since she returned home from helping in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina left so many animals needing rescue and help getting back with their families. We have helped close to 1,600 rescues find forever, loving homes. -- R.M., SusieQ DogResQ, Inc.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important. EMPLOYMENT
