DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Holley High Schoolers Install Barn at Homesteads for Hope Submitted by: Beth Nash, Holley Central School Communications Specialist, Edited& Expanded by Amanda Dudek

O

n several clear days this May, middle and high school students from Holley’s Geometry in Construction class visited Homesteads for Hope located on Manitou Road in Spencerport to install a barn which they built specifically for this worthy nonprofit. They transported their “work in progress” to a predetermined spot on Homesteads for Hope (H4H) property and continued its construction on site. Now completed, this barn will house small animals. Holley math teacher, Russ Albright, and technology teacher, Tim Rogers, co-teach Geometry in Construction with students rotating between math days and building days each week. “The Geometry in Construction class is an outstanding opportunity for these kids to see how some of the geometric concepts that they learn are applied in real life situations,” said Albright, Mathematics Department Chair and NHS Advisor. “It makes me so proud when a student brings up mathematical terminology while doing a construction task.” Albright added that he often hears students say, “Oh, Albright, Rogers and Holley students pause for a photo while installing a barn for I get it now,” when Homesteads for Hope they use the same mathematical concepts they learned in the classroom for the building project. There are 12 students in this year’s class, with the majority in 10th grade. The class helps students learn how math concepts can be applied to real-world problems to create solutions. Students combined their math and construction skills to build a 16’ x 20’ barn for H4H this year. In the fall, students went on a fieldtrip to the H4H farm so they could better understand how this organization operates and where the barn will be placed on the property. Housing animals like chickens and rabbits in the barn will provide new opportunities for young adults to care for the animals on the farm. The barn installation is part of the Phase I plan for H4H, a non-profit community farm that is all-inclusive and provides a place where young adults of all abilities can learn, work, live and grow. The barn features a gambrel roof, sliding barn doors, windows and a loft on the second floor. Students constructed stairs to the loft, designed to maximize floor space. Metal skin siding will be added to the barn once it is in place. Students planned for the project by working on a scale model of the barn. The barn was staged on a specially built platform at school before it was dismantled and transported to H4H to be installed permanently. The skills students learn in this class will be carried with them beyond high school to be used in future jobs or to make home repairs. “Students enjoy this class because they can see the real-world application of math,” said Rogers. “This helps increase their “buy in.” Many students who don’t traditionally perform well in math class are performing much better in this class.” The scores from last year’s Regents Exam continue to show that Geometry in Construction students score better than traditional geometry students. While the class has two major goals-success on the

Holley students working on the roof of the barn construction project and success on the Geometry Regents - its community service aspect is important, as well. “We always take a field trip at the beginning of the year to wherever we will be assembling the final project in order for the kids to be able to see where and who the project will be benefiting,” said Albright. “The kids come back excited to do the project because they know it will help others in need.” Rogers agrees, adding that helping others often gives these students a purpose for learning and for life. The students agree. “It is a great, hands-on experience that helps you give back to the community,” said sophomore David Farruggia. “I would definitely recommend it.” Senior Matthew Skehan, who was part David Farruggia, of the first Geometry Holley Sophmore in Construction class three years ago, also feels the experience was positive. “It was a lot of fun, and the teachers were fantastic,” he recalled. “I would always struggle in math, but this class really helped me. The concepts were much clearer when we added a real-life aspect to it” Skehan is now considering attending trade school for carpentry, which did not surprise technology teacher, Rogers. “Students who have been a part of the class during the past two years now seem to be very directional and have a genuine passion for life,” observed Rogers. “It seems to have connected with something inside of them, encouraging them to take control of their lives and find their role in society.” Albright and Rogers both have backgrounds which have been invaluable during these class projects. “Tim and I both have a tremendous amount of building experience,” Albright said. “Tim was a home builder for several years, and my father owns a contracting business with which I have worked for the past 40 years. We have a lot of experience to bring into the classroom and onto the job site.” With projects now including building oneman, homeless shelters and the H4H barn, it will be exciting to see what Holley’s Geometry in Construction students do next. Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

How can I get my hydrangeas to bloom? - Mary R. There are several reasons why macrophylla hydrangeas don’t bloom. They need winter protection to keep the buds from freezing. Deer often will eat the buds, which form the previous season. And often they gradually reduce their blooms each year because they don’t thrive in our cold winters. There are other kinds of hydrangeas that do bloom reliably in our weather. Both panicle hydrangeas and arborescens hydrangeas bloom very well here. The arborescens varieties are most deer resistant. I spray the buds on my panicle hydrangeas with deer re-

Somewhere along the line, a bond fractured, or at least twisted into a malfunctioning tangle. You regret it, but cannot seem to fix it. If this sounds achingly familiar to you just now, then take courage for God knows how to help the brokenhearted. Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would come to give “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness” (Isaiah 61:3, NKJV). God gave Himself to show us an unimaginable kind of love. In 13 Weeks to Love, author and speaker Jennifer Jill Schwirzer shows how to live God’s love and how doing so fulfills the purpose for which He created us. God is love and we, as His image bearers, posses the capacity for love. Because love is fundamental to life itself and because it’s all we’ll really care about in the end, let’s care about it now.

Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

WHEN TEETH HINT OF DISEASE Just as the eyes are windows into many health conditions, so the mouth serves as a door. For many people with celiac disease, a visit to the dentist and not the gastroenterologist is the first step toward discovering the condition. The autoimmune disorder known as “celiac disease” (an immune reaction to eating gluten) can cause damage to the small intestine that will interfere with nutrient absorption. If the disease blocks calcium absorption, it can cause “dental enamel hypoplasia,” the medical term for white, yellow, or brown spots on the teeth. This weakening of tooth enamel affects as many as 40 percent to 50 percent of new pediatric celiac patients compared with 6 percent of the healthy population.

To give our patients the best dental care possible, we are committed to continual learning and education. Because we want our patients to feel confident knowing that we are a team of skilled clinicians, we stay informed about the latest research, new techniques and equipment, and the latest products that a dental office can offer its patients to provide state-of-the-art dental care. We invite you to take advantage of our commitment to the highest quality dental care by calling BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for a convenient appointment. general good health. He never washes his hands when he comes in from working as a public accountant. He doesn’t wash his hands when he sneezes, or after touching meat and poultry when he cooks. He smokes and is a functioning alcoholic. He says it’s not necessary to wash fruit before you eat it and tells me I don’t know what I am talking about. He has been on Lipitor for several years and eats steak almost every night. On the other hand, I wash my hands when I come in from work and before preparing meals, and have always washed fruit before eating it. What’s his secret? Does he have strong genes? -- T.M. ANSWER: Eating well and taking good care of yourself don’t guarantee a long, healthy life. The converse is true as well. I have heard so many stories about Aunt Martha (or Gertrude or Helen), who drank, smoked and lived on bacon until she was 105, but your lifestyle does give you a better chance at living longer and healthier, and of feeling better right now. Smoking increases the risk of dying from any cause. A 74-yearold man who has smoked all his life has about the same risk of dying as an 82-year-old nonsmoker. One can do a similar risk analysis with diet. But some people, through a combination of good genes and good luck, manage to live long, healthy lives despite poor lifestyle choices. Even though some individuals will not have the expected outcome, smoking is still bad. So is eating steak every night. Washing (or at least rinsing) produce is a good idea. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There’s nothing an Aries Lamb likes less than having to tackle a humdrum task. But finding a creative way to do it can make all the difference. A more exciting time awaits you this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Finishing up a job on time leaves you free to enjoy your weekend without any Taurean guilt pangs. A romantic attitude from an unlikely source could take you by surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moving in a new career direction might be seen by some as risky. But if you have both the confidence to see it through and the facts to back you up, it could prove rewarding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Holding back on a decision might be difficult, considering how long you’ve waited for this opportunity. But until you’re able to resolve all doubts, it could be the wiser course to take. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You still need to move carefully where financial matters are concerned. Better for the Lion to move slowly than pounce on a “promising” prospect that doesn’t keep its promises. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A rejection of an idea you believe in can be upsetting. But don’t let it discourage you. Get yourself back on track and use what you’ve learned from the experience to try again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The early part of the week could find you looking to balance your priorities between your family obligations and your career responsibilities. Pressures begin to ease by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An associate’s problem could cause unavoidable delays in moving ahead with your joint venture. If so, use the time to look into another project you had previously set aside. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although a financial problem could be very close to being resolved in your favor, it’s still a good idea to avoid unnecessary spending for at least a little while longer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Support for some unwelcome workplace decisions begins to show up, and continues to build, so that by week’s end, the gregarious Goat is as popular as ever. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Deciding to attend a social function you might have earlier tried to avoid could turn out to be one of the best decisions you’ve made in a long time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into a new situation could prove to be a more difficult experience than you expected. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice in coping with some of the more irksome challenges. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong sense of duty makes you a valued and trusted member of your community. Have you considered a career in law enforcement?

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Recently, Golden Coin Laundry/Dry Cleaning was kindly helpful, without their customer even asking. A partly disabled, senior citizen was helped getting some drapes with special instructions washed, then when dry and pressed, back out into the car again. There was good, honest, communication So tonight, I was out walking my dog in our peaceful village as I often do. My dog is, of course, leashed with doggy bags on hand and is on the municipal side grass. My dog is in her senior years and likes to stop and piddle periodically, even if there’s nothing left. Out of nowhere, this woman pulls over and proceeds to proclaim that I must pick up the dog poop, insinuating my dog had pooped in her yard, with a hoity toity attitude. My dog had not pooped at all, and if she had, I certainly don’t need to be pre-advised of my responsibilities. The woman quickly rushed away, surely realizing her own arrogance and haste. My dog is a good judge of character, and we both concur hers really stinks!

The Avon Circle looks beautiful with the Military banners hanging and the gardens planted and starting to bloom. new units. Two electricians showed up on time but slow walked the job. After 3 hours, both of them had only managed to install 4 thermostats total. Turns out they were overheard talking to each other about how they had hooked the wires up incorrectly, and when the units were placed back in the wall, the wires actually came loose! These novice mistakes, including troubleshooting them, took up valuable time that we were paying for by the hour. When I contacted the owner to voice my concern, he unfortunately made more excuses for his employees than he did offers to help me, his customer. I felt duped.

You will find Christmas decorations, Easter decorations, multiple containers of fake flowers, multiple figurines, and even beer cans, beer cans on graves of young people who died because of alcohol. This is not showing respect for the dead. We are in May, and the holiday wreaths are still on the graves. I understand our need to grieve and to display our love for someone who has passed, but we can’t overdue and infringe on the rights of neighboring graves. We have to keep things neat. Please, everyone go clean up your loved one’s grave.

I have no hate feeling for any group and hope that the poster of that comment feels the same way. We, as a country, need to move forward. Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.

Complete Auto Body Repair

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

70 Years 1947-2019 768-7370 8375 E. Main Rd., LeRoy The spirit that inspires travelers to take to the open road still exists, but nowadays drivers can make their road trips even more fun by taking along the appropriate tech.

AUTO SECTION

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 27, 1941, the British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France, where it fled because it was leaking fuel. The German death toll was more than 2,000. Three days earlier, the Bismarck had sunk the British battlecruiser Hood.

Show Mom You Care: Have A Conversation About Long Term Care Insurance (NAPS)—This year, as you look back at the many years your mother cared for you, consider the possibility that she may require care herself someday. Long term care insurance can help ensure that your mother will get the care she needs, should there come a time when she requires help managing some of the activities we associate with independent living. Millions of Americans require long term care during their lifetime,1 which includes assistance with simple tasks like bathing, eating and dressing—trivial things we do every day without a second thought. In reality, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. It’s important to keep in mind that women, in general, live longer than men. This means that women may be more likely to need care at some point in their lives than their male counterparts.2 Should that need arise—whether it’s assistance to perform activities of daily living or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment—it’s likely to be provided by a family member or friend. Unfortunately, this may not be an ideal option, with many families living far apart from each other. And, your mother may not be willing to place that burden on you or even a close friend. The good news is, she is eligible to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). Encourage your qualified relatives to plan now The best time for your family members to consider long term care insurance is long before they need it. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important for your qualified relatives to apply when they are in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or condition may prevent them from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means the younger people are when they apply for coverage, the lower their premium. You may wish to consider applying for coverage as well, as a way to help secure your family’s future. With benefits designed specifically for the federal family, the FLTCIP offers a smart way to help protect your savings and assets should you or your loved ones need long term care services someday. Many members of the federal family are eligible to apply for coverage under the FLTCIP, including federal and U.S. Postal Service employees and annuitants, as well as active and retired members of the uniformed services. Certain family members, or qualified relatives, are also eligible. Qualified relatives include your spouse, domestic partner, parents and parents-in-law, and adult children. For a complete list of who is eligible to apply, visit LTCFEDS. com/eligibility. For personalized assistance, call (800) LTC-FEDS ( (800) 5823337)/TTY (800) 843-3557 to speak with a program consultant. 1 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On May 28, 1957, National League owners vote unanimously to allow the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers to move to San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively, on the condition that both teams had to move. * On May 29, 2003, some 35 U.S. states declare it to be Bob Hope Day when the iconic comedic actor and entertainer turns 100 years old. Hollywood officials renamed the famous intersection of Hollywood and Vine as Bob Hope Square.

Medicare vs Medicaid Medicare and Medicaid, though they sound alike, are two separate, government-run medical, health insurance based programs. They are operated and funded by different parts of the government, and they serve different groups. Both can help you pay for health care and medical expenses.

Medicare is an age based, federal health

If you are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid (dually eligible), you can have both. They will work together to provide you with health coverage and lower your health care costs. There are differences in covered services and in cost-sharing. Adopting a Shelter Dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies. Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort. Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.

GET THE MOST OUT OF BRIDAL SHOWS AND WEDDING EVENTS Come prepared. Chances are each vendor is going to ask couples for information so that they can follow up with a phone call or email with more detailed offerings and estimates. Couples attending the show can expediate the process by coming equipped with labels that feature their names, contact information and wedding date. They can then stick the labels on sign-in sheets or use them like business cards.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.
