Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY Stay silent while you’re away as well. Social media silence should be continued while you’re on vacation as well. No matter how tempting it may be to share photos from an exotic location, such posts could catch the attention of all the wrong people. A recent report from MetLife indicated that 35 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 check in from their locations via social media. That can alert criminals that no one is manning the fort back home.

Apple Butter Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Servings: 10 cup Apple Butter cup maple syrup teaspoon red pepper flakes teaspoon salt teaspoon smoked paprika pieces bacon extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Lest We Forget BY DP DUNN

M

emorial Day is often heralded as the unofficial start of summer; yet its origin, traditions and intentions are far more profound and meaningful.

Memorial Day has its roots in Remembrance Day celebrations which began after the War Between the States. Families reflected on the loss of their fathers, sons, cousins, and neighbors. It was a solemn day set aside to pause and reflect on war, service to the nation, and the losses incurred during a long and difficult war. Remembrance Day was later called Decoration Day, and its popularity and practice grew after World Wars 1 and 2 resulting in every state practicing some formal date of remembrance for the nation’s fallen warriors. In 1968, the US Congress instituted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the celebration of Memorial Day to the last Monday in May. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs cites the purpose of Memorial Day thus: “Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.” While is it always appropriate to thank an active duty member of the armed forces, and living Veterans, for their service, Memorial Day belongs specifically to those members of the US military who have died while serving their nation. We thank them through our recollection of their sacrifice to keep us safe and free. Meet PFC Ray Bowman, born in Rochester on April 2nd, 1924. He was the fifth of seven Bowman children. They were a lively bunch. Ray served in D Company of the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Ray was a machine gunner. On Tuesday, April 10th, 1945, Ray wrote this letter home: Dear Mom, How is my favorite Mom? I know you are wondering why you don’t get more mail from me but you can see from the papers we are moving fast and there is hardly even time to wash anymore. This is sure a strange war and right now it is for the better for we are motoring [motorized?] Yesterday we freed quite a few Americans, English, and Russians in a rotten prison camp. The Americans and in Jan [?] had walk [sic] 500 miles from near Poland and they had less than nothing to eat. They were so thin and sick the Germans could not take them back with them. I often wondered about Ray S. and some of the other fellows I know. I sure hope we find them soon. The Russians were slave workers and were mostly women. Oh boy what a celebration we had last night. We are far away from there now tho. On the average I’ve had 2 hours of sleep per night for two weeks now.

We had a radio for tonight and it is swell to hear music again. Gosh sometimes I get so homesick for all those things that I left behind. You should have seen the me after 4 days of no washing. I still have not taken all the dirt off. It’s now one o’clock in the morning, Mom and chow is at 5:30 so guess I’ll hit the hay. Please send me a fruit cake when you can. Love, Ray Eight days later, PFC Raymond J. Bowman died in Leipzig, Germany. Ray was 21 years and 17 days old. This is why we celebrate Memorial Day. Because we cannot thank Ray in person for his sacrifice. He served, and we benefitted as we still do today. Meet 1st Lt. Hiram Appelget of the 95th Bomber Squadron. Lt. Appelget was killed in action on March 1st, 1943. Steven Appelget said of his great uncle, “[Hiram, or ‘Hi’] was a pilot of a B-26 Marauder – the ‘Barrelhouse Bessie’,” Steven said. “When I started seriously working on family history, I made up a slogan for our family: ‘We showed up’. [Hi] showed up. He wasn’t looking for a big military career or even to ‘whup’ the [enemy]. He had a job to do, and he did it – and complained about the food and the conditions along the way. He had a ship to fly and guys to watch out for. And that’s what he did. He showed up.” Hi and Ray both showed up. They both did their jobs. Neither wanted to be a hero. Neither, I imagine, woke up that particular morning expecting to die. Although, when serving in combat, that is a constant possibility. These men made choices to serve their nation. Many served in non-combat positions, and all accepted the risk willingly for home, family, and nation. It is estimated that approximately 1,304,702 men and women have lost their lives serving in the United States military, in armed conflicts, since 1775. That’s one million three hundred four thousand seven hundred two reasons to say a profound and sincere “Thank You!” this Memorial Day. They all ‘showed up’, did their jobs, and gave their lives, and we are in their debt. Remember Hi, Ray and the many others this Memorial Day. Set an alarm for 3pm. Say a prayer for the repose of their eternal souls if you are so inclined, but at least have awareness and gratitude towards all of these departed men and women who will not be marching in any parades, tipping a beer with you, shopping, fishing, camping, playing ball, boating, gardening, or grilling. That’s exactly why we celebrate Memorial Day.

What were you thinking?! I was backing out of a parking space at a local grocery store. Half way out, a lady with a cart walks right behind me. Of course, I hit my brakes. Then, she has the nerve to yell at me to watch out. Wait, I’m in motion, and you kept walking. What were you thinking? Why, if anything happened, would I would be at fault? No matter how careful I look around and how slowly I’m backing out, you still walked behind a moving vehicle.

S E V RA Thank you! Thank you to the kind person who returned my butterfly cane to the lost & found on Friday, May 13th at the Geneseo Walmart. Cookie I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all of the people who helped me look for my dog "Cookie" on Sunday, May 15th. She accidentally got loose in Batavia near Centennial Park and took off like a rocket. Thanks for the help, chicken snacks, kibble, and supportive comments. If you're looking for kind neighbors and amazing people, there's no need to look any further than Batavia! My helpers ranged from small children to mature adults and everyone in-between, walking along the streets calling out for Cookie! This story has a happy ending. Miraculously, I found Cookie a couple hours later. She was worn out, but otherwise, she was fine! Thanks again to everyone for all of your help. God Bless you! A Very Special Thank You! To my little buddy, and my big buddy, my Father, and my Grand-dad. They both served honorably, James C. Marsh, aka Cactus Jack, in the US Navy, during WWII, mostly in the Atlantic fleet. And my Father prepared to be shipped over as a medic in the US Army during the Vietnam war. So thank you for ending that. I love my Dad. A salute to my uncle Mike and my cousin, Rick. Bless you and yours to all those that serve honorably in our armed forces, law enforcement, and the medical field. Be well & many better tomorrows!

Buddy Shoppers Buddy shoppers helping: It’s a very wonderful thing you’re doing, shopping for the elderly who can’t get out. But please respect them and wear a mask. You don’t know if you are sick without symptoms. You could be sick. Even if they are vaccinated, they still could get very very sick and hospitalized due to numerous medical problems. Many of those elderly people think it’s safe for them now to unmask. But it’s really not. Just top off the wonderful thing you’re doing by respecting them and masking up. I know some of those Shoppers who have gone in without masks numerous times. It’s their space; respect it please. My friend had a buddy Shopper like this, and she said he wasn’t masking up, so she had to cancel him for her safety. Chicken Shortage? Wow, what’s next? Ready? The local grocery store had a sign: “No rotisserie chickens due to tornado in Kentucky.” Really? Chickens must be raised only in Kentucky. Don’t farmers raise chickens in New York State, too? Local stores can’t buy from local farms anymore? These excuses never end! Gas Prices There is way too much stupidity in Government. Add ethanol to the pumps to “help” the fuel crisis? Ethanol ruins conventional engines that are not designed for that fuel additive. Ethanol reduces mileage and creates more pollution. It’s funny: the plan to reduce tax on gas begins in June, but since the announcement, look how high prices have risen. Sure, the way it’s going, anything will help. It’s sort of like giving you a quarter back on a hundred dollar purchase.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a puppy last month. “Jake” is having some problems adjusting to his new home. He has soiled his own bed three times so far (we crate him at night) and doesn’t make it through the day -- he starts whining by the door around lunchtime and, if we’re not home, will just go anywhere in the house. How can we fix this? -- Carl B., via email

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. Page 15

DEAR CARL: How old is Jake? It sounds like, barring any unknown physical issues or illness, he is a young puppy with a small bladder. He simply can’t hold it as long as a fully grown dog. The fact that Jake makes it a point to whine by the door means that the house training is effective, but you may be waiting much too long to take him out. When he has to go, he will go. That includes soiling his crate, which is an absolute last resort for a dog. Follow this guideline, published by the American Kennel Club, called the “month-plus-one” rule: Take your puppy’s age in months, and add one. That gives you a rough estimate of the maximum number of hours Jake should wait before going outside to pee or poop. For example, if Jake is four months old, add one to that number. The total, five, means he should be taken outside every five hours. Every puppy is different, so Jake may need to go out a little sooner. And yes, that means he may need to go out in the middle of the night, or on a pee pad. He should always be taken out just before bedtime and first thing in the morning, regardless of his age. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

The first recorded road trip across the U.S. began in 1903 with a bet. Someone bet Horatio Nelson Jackson (a physician and automobile pioneer) that he could not travel from San Francisco to New York City in less than 90 days. Accompanied by mechanic Sewall K. Crocker and a dog named Bud, they set off in a 20-horsepower Winston to prove them wrong. Despite numerous mishaps, Jackson and Crocker completed the trip in 63 days.

Blood Thinners Preclude Some OTC Pain Meds

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

UNDER PRESSURE Toothaches can have a variety of causes, including sinus inflammation and sinus infections. Toothaches often occur in the upper teeth along with sinus pressure and inflammation because the roots of the upper teeth are located near the sinuses. How can you tell the difference between a sinus toothache and a toothache caused by a cavity, abscess, or periodontal disease? When the cause is sinus related, the pain usually occurs in more than one tooth and possibly in both sides of upper teeth. Tooth pain caused by sinus pressure should subside as the sinus infection or inflammation clears. If the toothache persists beyond the sinus infection, it’s time to visit your dentist to rule out any dental-related causes.

A painful toothache is the body’s way of announcing that something is wrong and needs attention. Ignoring the pain means you also ignore the underlying problem, and treatment becomes a more serious undertaking. Be smart! For excellence in dental care from a caring staff committed to your comfort, well-being, and sunny smile, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, state-of-the-art dental office at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do. so I am unable to take ibuprofen or naproxen for pain. Do you know of anything I can take to help with pain? -- K.B. ANSWER: The body has two ways of clotting blood: the blood clotting factors and platelets, which are special blood clotting cells. Warfarin (Coumadin), like newer agents such as dabigatran (Pradaxa) or rivaroxaban (Xarelto), work as anticoagulants, blocking proteins that help clot the blood. They don’t actually “thin” the blood; that would mean a change in viscosity. Clotting factors are needed for a mature, effective blood clot. Aspirin and NSAID drugs, like ibuprofen or naproxen (Aleve and others), affect platelets, the specialized blood cells that start clotting the blood when necessary. If both the platelet system and the factor system are decreased due to medication (or underlying clotting disorder), then the risk for abnormal bleeding goes up. This does not mean people can never take aspirin or NSAIDs if they are on a medication to reduce clotting risk, but it does mean that a careful evaluation must be done, based on a person’s unique circumstances, to determine the safety of doing so. In other words, your doctor should be able to tell you how often, if ever, you can take these over-the-counter pain relievers. If you can’t take any, then acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually the safest bet. However, too much acetaminophen can increase the effect of warfarin (measured by your INR level). ***

Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Walk Faster, Live Longer

We’ve known for years that walking is a good form of exercise for seniors ... we just didn’t know why. Now a new study not only explains how it works, but why brisk walking is even more effective. Ten years ago, researchers at Leicester University Biomedical Research Centre started looking at genetic data in the biobanks in the U.K. for clues about why seniors who walk seemed to live longer. They didn’t fool around with a dozen or so participants. No, they analyzed the information of over 405,000 people. And now we know: It’s the telomere length. Telomeres (aka leucocyte telomere length, or LTLs) are the “end caps” on strands of DNA, the building blocks of our bodies and an indicator of our biological age. Fast walkers have longer LTLs, and therefore better health ... and longer lives. That same study showed that as little as 10 minutes per day of brisk walking can equate to longer lives. (The Mayo Clinic prefers 30 minutes of activity per day, possibly broken into three 10-minute sessions.) The best walking pace appears to be 3 mph, although the research data was from wearable tracking devices like those we use to measure steps per day. But there’s more. A study at the National Institutes of Health concluded that the length of the telomeres is positively associated with consuming fruits, dairy, 100% fruit juice and coffee. On the other hand, food and drinks with high amounts of sugar and red meat can negatively affect the telomere length. The study gave a big thumbs up to the Mediterranean diet, with loads of nuts, fruits, vegetables, unrefined cereals, fish and olive oil. If you invest in a pedometer to measure your steps, be sure to look for one that tracks your speed. Ask your doctor about any recommendations they have for the trackers. Q &A with the

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners What is the best way to clean dust off my house plants? There are two main reasons to clean your house plants: aesthetics and health. A layer of dust will limit a plants ability to absorb light, which interferes with photosynthesis and slows growth down. One of the easiest ways to give a houseplant a refresher is to take it into the shower with you. Small plants do well with a quick dip in the sink, but consider bringing in the larger potted plants for a more immersive cleaning. This practice works best if you have a removable showerhead and can adjust the pressure. It is best to keep the temperature lukewarm. You could also use a spray bottle. Another method that works well on large sturdy leaves is to utilizing soapy water and a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Mix 1/4 tea-

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County spoon of dish soap with a half-gallon of room temperature water and gentle clean the plant with the sponge or microfiber cloth. When done rise the plant with clean water. When is the best time of the year to prune lilac bushes and grape vines? Grapevine pruning is performed all winter in many large commercial vineyards because this big job requires many hours. The “late dormant period” – FebruaryMarch--is the ideal time to prune, however, because the extent of winter injury to vines can then be determined. If injury has occurred, pruning severity can be adjusted. Pruning can affect the timing of bud-break. That difference may be cause for or prevention of frost dam-

age to buds in the growing season Do not over-prune lilacs. Let the plant develop several branches from the base, instead of only one or two. This allows you to remove stems that have grown too tall, or have been attacked by diseases or insects, and still have flowering wood. Pruning is unnecessary for the first 3 or 4 years. Thereafter, limit pruning to the removal of weaker wood from the center of the bush. This prevents a thicket from developing. You should do this soon

after flowers have fallen. Do not prune in late summer, fall, or winter; late pruning often results in removal of flower buds. Old bushes with runaway growth will need severe pruning. Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest, and damaged.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAVING & SEALING CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

* Here’s a grill tip just in time for Memorial Day: When you need to cook something that needs covering (say, chicken) alongside something that does not (like hot dogs), simply invert an aluminum roaster/cake pan over the needs-covering item. You can purchase smaller size pans that can be reused. -- JoAnn

* “Painting stairs? This tip will save your life! Paint every other step to start with. When they are dry, go back and paint the others. This way, you can use the staircase anytime during your project. This is particularly important if the stairs are the only way to get to bed after a long day of painting!” -- I.L. in Nevada * Mix a quarter cup of salt in with two tablespoons of bath wash for a sudsy, refreshing, skin-soothing salt scrub. * To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out, and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You’ll end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the side of your luggage. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Employ social media. Social media is not just for kids. In fact, social media is a great way for professionals to make and maintain professional contacts. LinkedIn, for example, makes it easy to connect with fellow professionals who are looking to do the same. Twitter can be used to promote professional events such as seminars or workshops you are working with. These platforms can be used to grow your network quickly and easily, but be sure to vet each person you connect with to make sure you are affiliating yourself with the right people.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable. EMPLOYMENT

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
