Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

CURE!!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

Meniscal Tear in Knee Might Not Need Surgery ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: While chasing my cat, I dove to the ground and both my knees took a beating. They were bruised but felt fine. A few days after this, my left knee started to bother me. I put on a brace to see if that would help (as it usually does), but it didn’t. I went to my chiropractor a few days later and had an adjustment and deep tissue massage. The next day, I was walking my dog and had to stop, as I couldn’t move my knee. About 13 years ago, I had a torn meniscus in the same knee, and it healed without surgery with the assistance of my chiropractor, massage therapist and acupuncture. I called my doctor’s office, and he was out of town. His nurse suggested that I go to an urgent care facility to have an X-ray of my knee, which I did. The doctor said that nothing was broken but that I should follow up with an MRI. I saw my doctor a few days later and brought my X-ray, etc. He said I don’t need an MRI. I am not looking for knee surgery, but wouldn’t an MRI indicate if it is a torn meniscus, pulled ligament, osteoarthritis, etc., so I could get the proper treatment? What would that be? -- R.Z. ANSWER: The menisci are ring-shaped cartilage structures that sit on top of the tibia and provide stability and shock absorption to the knee. Given the mechanism of injury and your prior history, a meniscal tear is a very likely possibility. Symptoms that support a tear in the meniscus would include a locking of the knee or a giving sensation while walking, often associated with pain. A careful physical exam can usually make the diagnosis of a meniscal tear. A suspected meniscal tear does not usually require an MRI, as most will heal with conservative management. (I refer nearly all to physical therapy rather than the treatments you used, but I won’t argue with your success.) I reserve the MRI for people in whom surgery would be contemplated. Since surgery is no better than placebo for many people with a torn meniscus (based on a fascinating 2017 study from Finland), I am particularly careful to refer only people who have not gotten better with a good trial of conservative management.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
DON’T LET STAINS RUIN YOUR SMILE When bright white teeth are your goal, it’s good to know the causes of dental stains so you can avoid them. There are many products and procedures for whitening your teeth available at local drug stores as well as your dentist’s office, but if you want to maintain whitened teeth, there are some foods to avoid and habits to change. If you smoke... stop now. Foods with bright colors are likely to leave their mark on your teeth, so if you can’t brush after enjoying berries, pasta sauce, or curry, try rinsing your mouth with water and/or chewing some sugar-free gum to loosen some of the staining particles. Do the same after drinking coffee, tea, or red wine.
In addition to the way other people see you, the many methods of cosmetic dentistry can greatly improve the way you see yourself. Thanks to procedures such as whitening, bonding, veneers, contouring, and implants, you can have the smile you’ve always wanted. Here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we will use all our skills, artistry, and experience to design a treatment plan that exactly suits your needs and lifestyle. For an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre, please call 585.343.4246.
P.S. Be careful when using tooth-whitening products since overuse can actually cause permanent discoloration of teeth.

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas. In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil. For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING
DOUBLE LETTERS UP FRONT
People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction. BATAVIA EDITION

S E V RA God bless volunteer firefighters! On May 8th, 2021, our worst nightmare happened. Five townhouses in Penfield caught on fire. The Penfield Fire Department, along with seven other companies, responded around 5AM to the fire. By then, it was at least a 5 Alarm fire, burning like an inferno. The firefighters worked so hard and risked their lives to save our homes. Three of the townhomes were a total loss, and two, including ours, were heavily damaged with smoke and water. In the following weeks, a lot of people, some neighbors and some we don't know, have rallied around us with donations of clothing, personal products, laundry products, and gift cards. There are many hugs and meals being offered. I have been a volunteer firefighter daughter and wife. Now my son is a 3rd generation volunteer firefighter. I have served as the fire dispatcher. I have never been the on the other side, and now that I have, I have a better appreciation for the men and women who serve this community. Thank you, Penfield Firefighters!

Drones It makes me sick that it is legal for anyone to fly drones equipped with cameras over private property. Parents have no way of knowing who may be taking pictures or videos of their children, and there’s nothing to be done about it. It’s illegal to block the drones’ signals but not for them to surveil private property and families.

Political signs Let’s stop the back and forth about the Trump signs. Some people will leave their signs up forever! Let’s enjoy having who we have in the White House.
Fundraiser disappointment A dinner fundraiser was advertised at a local school, which I get every year. The ad said you could either buy a pre-sale ticket or tickets would be available at the door. After driving there, I was told they had sold out. Very disappointed.
Beautiful Downtown Hats off to the Avon Garden Club and Avon Village Crew for planning, planting and maintaining our beautiful downtown gardens. Always a pleasure to drive around the circle and take in all the islands and the blooms of the season. To all those who plant, weed and water, your efforts are truly appreciated.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES
1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Help With COVID Funeral Expenses
No one wants to think about it, but it’s a fact of life. People are dying of COVID. They’re leaving behind families that, in many cases, are already struggling with financial worries. Add in the cost of a funeral, and many will need help. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is stepping in with funding. Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA is offering financial assistance for funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020. FEMA has started an assistance phone line (844-684-6333) that’s open Monday-Friday, 9am-9pm ET. Its representatives will help get applications completed. The call will take about 20 minutes, so they can get all the details right. Have all your information in front of you before you call. Once you’re given an application number, you’ll need to send supporting documentation to FEMA, typically by fax or mail. To learn more, go to the FEMA website: www.fema.gov. Scroll down the front page to the item dated April 12, 2021, Funeral Assistance FAQ. There are a number of criteria to see if you’re qualified for help. You must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national or qualified alien. You must be the one who paid the funeral expenses. Funeral homes cannot call for you. If several of you contributed to the expenses, tell them at FEMA, but typically there needs to be one application. There are a number of categories of funeral expense that might be covered, including headstone, casket, clergy services and more. A warning: Scammers are always looking for the next way to con people out of money. Now they’re calling people (possibly those who were listed in funeral notices) and offering to help fill out the applications for assistance. Don’t fall for it. FEMA is not going to call you. (NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! AUTOMOTIVE

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.
DEAR PET DAD: Coyotes have made a comeback in the U.S. and are present in many suburbs and even in the city. While coyotes are less likely to attack larger dogs, they’ve been known to go after smaller dogs. And cats are not necessarily fast enough to escape, either. So, if the neighbors are reporting a coyote in the area, take heed. Don’t let your cat or dog out in the backyard unsupervised. Even if you have a fence around the yard, unless it’s over 6 feet tall (and not all municipalities allow that height) it may not discourage a coyote from hopping it and nosing around. Coyotes are mostly looking for food. They’re opportunists. If there is cat or dog food left outside, for example, they’ll eat it -- and probably come back later, looking for more. This is one way that conflicts with coyotes (and other local wildlife) can start. If they have a reason to come onto your property to begin with, and then start to see your pets as another food source -- you’ve got a problem. To sum up: * Supervise pets when they’re outside. Stay out there with them. * Don’t leave their food or water outside unattended; bring it in each evening. * Consider wildlife-resistant fencing to keep coyotes and other unwanted critters out of your yard. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * With the start of barbeque season, here are two tips straight from my local butcher about grilling meat: First, let meats come to room temperature before cooking. It allows the meat to cook more evenly, and you won’t end up with a cold center and a burnt outside. Secondly, when your meat comes off the grill, give it time to rest before serving. This allows the juiced to redistribute throughout the cut of meat, and you’ll end up with juicy goodness in every bite. -- JoAnn

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. ~Anne Bradstreet
* “For a really fun take on kebabs, use fruit instead of meat. The kids especially love fruit on a stick. If you have some neat cookie cutters, use them to cut watermelon into different shapes.” -- M.M. in Michigan * The best outdoor tablecloths, especially on a windy day, are fitted single sheets. Simply fit the sheet over a standard picnic table, and it’s in place and ready. The elastic at the corners keeps it from flying away. You can look at thrift and discount stores for fun patterns or just plain colors! * To keep ants from invading your patio, draw a thick line of chalk (sidewalk chalk works great!) as a boundary. Ants don’t like to cross a chalk line and will leave your patio party alone.
FAMILY CYCLING IS AN
Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

Memorial Day: Remembering our Fallen Heroes & Honoring their Sacrifice BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
t is no exaggeration to say we are living in tumultuous times. Some of those serving in our nation’s military are in combat even today. Meanwhile, others have found “battles” being waged on the home front. In fact, it has been said that we are “more divided than ever before.” But are we? Memorial Day, a hallowed day when we remember our nation’s fallen military men and women, has its roots in the American Civil War. This war between the states, in which brother took up arms against brother, was a truly divided time in American history. Thankfully, no matter how vehemently we may disagree with each other today, we have yet to draw battle lines, wage war, and amass combat’s tragic death count on our own soil. The Civil War was fought for many reasons, not least of which was the despicable and heinous practice of slavery which had to be forever abolished. At the same time, the impact of such a massive internal conflict devastated much of our country. It was in this devastation, on the battlefields littered with our dead, over the aching pain of their loss that unity slowly returned once again. General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, was the first to officially declare a Memorial Day in 1868. Taking place in Arlington National Cemetery, the first Memorial Day (then Remembrance Day) was a time to place flowers on Confederate and Union soldiers’ graves. In death, these soldiers were no longer enemies, only brave human beings who gave everything for what they believed in. But oh, the cost! With the advent of World War I, Memorial Day became an official national day of remembrance for every American soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. One of those freedoms,

Freedom of Speech, is a right which demands tolerance, a tolerance that is necessary for the coexistence and peace of any diverse population. Our nation is beautifully diverse in so many ways, yet there are many issues which threaten to divide us, which threaten to engulf our nation in bloodshed, but if violence should come, what then? How many of our estranged neighbors, friends, and even family would no longer be enemies, only men and women who also paid a terrible price? Since World War I, other wars have come and gone, and our present conflict may be drawing to a close. Our valiant soldiers have laid down their lives in defense of a country whose many freedoms we all enjoy. This Memorial Day, may we remember our many ancestors and loved ones who paid dearly for these precious freedoms, and may we honor them always. As we gather together this weekend with our friends, family, and neighbors – especially those with whom we do not see eye to eye – let us remember our fallen heroes. May their sacrifice inspire us to seek peace over violence, to choose tolerance rather than anger, and to reject division in favor of common ground. Love to write? Hi! My name is
Hope. I was rescued in October of 2017 by my Furrever Mom. She took me home to meet my sister Cassie (also a rescue). I am quite the joker and love to hide and sneak up on my Mom & Dad or peek out at them from under the armoire (upside down of course). I bring them presents all the time, but I don’t think Dad likes the snakes very much. I drive my sister nuts chasing her all the time. I love my mom & dad very much, and am very glad mom found me.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

YARD SALE TIPS Have a nice display. First impressions can mean a lot. Buyers are more apt to visit neat, well-laid-out sales than those that are just a bunch of boxes that have to be dug through. OAKFIELD: 57 Maple Ave. June 12 and 13. MOVING SALE! Everything must Go! Clothing, bedroom, baby things, lawn equipment, furniture, many many more!
GENESEO: 4 Groveland Rd. Fri. 5/28 (noon-5) Sat. 5/29 (9-4) Sun. 5/30 (10-2) Household items. dishes, decor, bed linen, table cloths, Books, porcelain dolls, beanie babies and collectibles, picture frames, lawn furniture and home furniture inc. solid maple dining set, couches and more. STAFFORD: 6227 E Bethany Leroy Rd June 4th and 5th, (9AM - 4PM) Three family sale: Tools, Household, misc. Big variety.
HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.
ELBA: 4873 Barrville Rd, May 28-30 (10AM-4PM) yard sale, furniture, tools, and more. CORFU: 11 Longs Lane 6/4, 6/5 & 6/6 (9AM-3PM) YARD SALE patio set, wine decor, accent furniture, women’s new and like new size 14 clothing, Tupperware, longaberger baskets, twin and king size iron bed frames, adult costumes, dish sets, coach purses. DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
