Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds
www.williamkentinc.com
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. Organizing a gift auction requires a team of dedicated volunteers. * Enlist a team of gift-wrappers. Presentation may determine bids and increase those bids. Ask for donations of baskets and wrapping materials, such as ribbon and cellophane. Each prize can be wrapped in ways to entice bidders to bid high and bid often.

Hope Dealers BTC Cleans Communities for Addiction Recovery By Amanda Dudek “
I
am an addict in recovery,” said Hope Dealers BTC (Be the Change) founder, Stephanie Forrester. Hope Dealers BTC, a nonprofit organization founded in 2017, is operated by volunteers who clean up streets and public areas, such as playgrounds, removing needles and other trash. Forrester is very real about her past, knowing that the success of Hope Dealers BTC is deeply rooted in her own tragedy. “I have been clean for two and a half years,” explained Stephanie. “Before that, my husband and I were addicts and had lost custody of our children. We were homeless, living on the street.” As bad as things were for the two of them, for Stephanie Forrester, it grew worse. “I was prostituting, and I didn’t think I was going to live…I didn’t feel worthy of finding another way to live.” One experience finally brought Forrester to rock bottom. “I had overdosed several times, but the last time I overdosed, I knew I was going to die,” Stephanie recalled. “I kept thinking about my kids, and I wanted to be with them.” Forrester lived and made a significant decision. “I left my husband,” said Stephanie. “I checked into a detox program, as I had a numbers of times before, but this time, I did not move right back out to Rochester when I finished detox.” Instead, Forrester continued to live in Bergen. It wasn’t long before tragedy struck. “100 days into my recovery, I received a phone call,” recalled Stephanie. “My husband had passed away from an overdose.” Her voice became soft with the sound of choked back tears. “We would have celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary this year. I almost felt like he died so that I could live.” Forrester believes that had she been living in Rochester, she would have relapsed again. A week after receiving the devastating news of her husband’s death, Stephanie Forrester started Hope Dealers BTC as a Facebook Group. “We began going out into the community, the same areas in which I used to use, and doing community clean up, passing out food, clothing, personal care items…things people need to survive,” said Stephanie. “We even began boarding up abandoned buildings because if a person passes away in one of those, they may not be found for days.” Six months in, Hope Dealers BTC began gaining momentum. “We would have 7-10 volunteers; then more started coming,” Stephanie recalled. “During recent months, 2030 volunteers have joined us every Sunday. We are out there cleaning. People are letting their kids come outside to play because they know we’re cleaning to make it safe.” Hope Dealers BTC is consciously supportive of people in recovery, their children and other family members, and for Stephanie Forrester, it has meant so much more. “It has been an amazing journey,” she said. “All people recover differently, and I wanted to find something for myself. Going back to clean up the streets and spots where we used has given me such fulfillment while reminding me of how easily I could fall back.” On April 12th, 2019, Hope Dealers BTC was approved as a nonprofit organization. “It has turned into something so

Stephanie Forrester (center) with VP Karena Lee (left) and Volunteer Adina Evert (right) amazing,” Stephanie shared. “We have helped over 100 people get into treatment, picked up 75,957 needles, handed out 5,450 lunches and 778 prepared meals (courtesy of Food by DeLeo), handed out 26 sheet pizzas (courtesy of Caraglios in Greece), secured 39 abandoned properties and even saved a life using Narcan and CPR!” Hope Dealers BTC also hosts a recovery radio show on 106.3 FM from 4-5pm on Sundays. “We share these stories and help people to understand that it is okay to talk about addiction,” explained Stephanie. “Addiction carries a lot of shame and blame, both for us and our families. Most addicts are amazing people who made poor choices. My parents did everything they could for me; they fought for me. Let’s educate instead of judge; let’s help each other.” Hope Dealers has many plans for the future, as well. “We are currently working on a program to launch into schools,” said Stephanie. “We have spoken at a couple of schools, sharing our personal stories and what we do. We have also spoken at youth groups and panels, and we normally have a table at recovery events. The Monroe County Probation Officers Association has also invited us to share at a workshop they are having. We hope to Stephanie Forrester, increase awareness, Founder education and conversation.” Hope Dealers BTC also hopes to create better living options for addicts in recovery. “People coming out of detox often have no place to go; others are sent back to live a block from where they used to get their substance,” explained Stephanie. “We would like a house in the city for addicts waiting to get into detox,” said Stephanie. “We would also like to have a house for those who have been discharged from detox and are waiting for inpatient treatment and yet another sober living house outside of the city.” Hope Dealers BTC gladly accepts all volunteers, including those looking for community service hours. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try using that Aries charm to warm up the usual set of workplace naysayers, and then back it up with a solid block of facts and figures to sell your idea to your colleagues. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While nothing can deter a determined Bovine from following a course you believe in, it helps to have some supporting data and statements by trusted colleagues to make your case. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take advantage of new information that could help make your career transition easier. The weekend is a good time to re-establish relationships with people you haven’t seen in a while. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters demand your attention as oncestable situations begin to shift. Quick action to shore things up is called for in order to avoid more problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although your financial picture begins to brighten, “thrift” and “caution” are still the watchwords for fiscally astute Leos and Leonas to live by. Expect news about a family matter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you try to blame a colleague for a workplace problem, make sure you have the proof to back you up. Make some quiet inquiries on your own to try to solicit more information. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to cheer up a depressed friend or downcast family member can be difficult. But keep at it, and your efforts should soon pay off in ways you might have never expected. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking a new look at an old and frequently recurring problem might lead you to consider making some surprising changes in the way you had been handling it up till now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Despite what the naysayers might say, setting your sights on a new goal could be one of the smartest things the typically sagacious Sagittarian has done in a long time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rebuilding an unraveling relationship won’t be easy. But you can do it, if you really want to. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open between the two of you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friendship could develop into a close relationship. Meanwhile, reassure an old friend who might be feeling neglected that he or she is still an important part of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might be feeling that you’re still in over your head as you continue trying to adjust to your new situation. But the pressures ease by week’s end, giving you time to come up for air. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for sensing the feelings of others. You might consider a career in some aspect of counseling.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Is a Rare Condition

DEAR DR. ROACH: What do you know about flesh-eating bacteria? After going to a hospital to get a mole checked, I developed an itchy rash that won’t go away. I am worried. -- H.W. ANSWER: Let me reassure you that this isn’t flesh-eating bacteria. Itchy rash around a mole can be due to eczema, or it might be a fungal infection or one of several other benign skin conditions. A dermatologist can help figure out which. But, since you asked ... The term “flesh-eating bacteria” is misleading since it’s a disease, not a particular bacteria species. The term refers to a condition called “necrotizing fasciitis” (“necrotizing” means that the infection kills cells, and “fasciitis” references the connective tissue in the body that the infection proceeds along). However terrifying, it is fortunately a rare condition. There are only about 1-3 cases per 100,000 people. It may occur in people who are otherwise healthy and who happen to get an injury that penetrates the skin. But it is more common in people who have a diminished immune system due to chronic illness (diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer, heavy alcohol use). In most cases, in people with chronic disease, it is a combination of bacteria that cause the infection. In previously healthy people, the bacteria most associated are group A streptococcus. This bacteria strain has enzymes that damage the body and has the ability to evade the immune system. It can grow very rapidly, and early treatment is paramount to stopping the infection before permanent damage is done. In some cases, amputation is necessary; in others, no treatment is effective. The disease has a high mortality rate. The particular bacteria in a person with this diagnosis are very dangerous, and there are cases of person-to-person transmission of the bacteria, leading to additional cases, so caregivers and family need personal protective equipment. Effective treatment starts with recognition of the diagnosis. That can be hard; initial signs, such as redness, swelling and fever, can be nonspecific. Skin lesions, like blisters or bruising, can be misleading. However, a very high fever and more pain than expected are big clues to the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily surgical. Antibiotics alone are ineffective.
www.SalmonOrthodontics.com
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent column on sinusitis argued against routine antibiotics. Your advice, while sound, does not apply to all of us. I am an MDS patient with compromised immunity. When I get sick, it takes three times as long to recover. I feel the rules may apply to “normal” people, but not all of us. What would you recommend for someone like me? -- B.F. ANSWER: My answers certainly do not apply to all situations, and immunocompromised individuals are an excellent example. In the case of sinus infections, it depends on the person’s exact type of immune problem. Immunocompromised individuals certainly are more likely to be prescribed antibiotics, and are more likely to be subject to diagnostic testing when things don’t go as expected. Some kinds of immune system disease predispose people to unusual infections, which require specific treatments. Taking care of anyone requires judgment and experience, and physicians who have known their patients a long time are in a better position to judge who needs antibiotic treatment for sinus infection and who does well with supportive treatment. In the case of someone with immune system disease, that is even more important.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy BABY TOOTH REVELATION Scientists and archeologists have long used dental analysis to glean information about ancient civilizations’ diets, lifestyles, and causes of death. Now, the study of teeth has shifted from the past into the future, as researchers try to determine what teeth may tell us about potential health risks. It has been discovered that children with primary teeth (“baby teeth”) that have thin enamel are at a higher risk of developing a mental health disorder. When researchers used high-resolution imaging to examine the exfoliated baby teeth of 37 six-year-old children and matched tooth-enamel thickness with behavior, they found that the differences in dimension and teeth quality were better predictors of mental health than the factors that a psychiatrist would normally consider. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we stay on the leading-edge of dentistry,
keeping up to date on the latest health studies and dental techniques, materials, and therapies to ensure all our patients receive the very best in dental health care. If you are looking for a family dentist who understands the needs of everyone in your family as individuals and patients, we welcome you to stop by 6 Batavia City Centre and get acquainted. We’re sure you’ll leave with a good feeling about our practice. For an appointment, please call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. The study mentioned above shows that dentists and health professionals in other disciplines may have more in common than one might think when it comes to diagnosing and treating illness.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 2, 1924, with Congress’ passage of the Indian Citizenship Act, the United States confers citizenship on all Native Americans born within its territorial limits. Before the Civil War, citizenship was often limited to Native Americans of one-half or less Indian blood.
Five Tips For Financial Stability In Retirement Years (NAPS)—Most people have a vision of their golden years that includes a comfortable retirement in which they can spend their time doing the things they enjoy. That dream doesn’t require a substantial amount of wealth, but it is a lot more attainable if you have some financial stability. Unfortunately, just 17 percent of older Americans are “financially healthy” and four in five low- and moderate-income Americans over the age of 50 are struggling with at least some aspect of their financial lives, according to a 2019 study funded by AARP Foundation. Here are five tips for increasing financial stability during your retirement years: 1. Stay out of debt. Debt can be destabilizing because it robs seniors of some of their free cash flow and reduces the amount of money they can spend each month. Credit card spending is especially dangerous for retirees, so consider a pay-as-you-go habit for new purchases. 2. Be a smart investor. Whether you have a small retirement savings or a large investment portfolio, a diversified low-cost investment strategy can deliver additional income for spending and help you stay ahead of inflation. Choose a mix of stocks, bonds and cash that helps you sleep soundly at night, according to The Vanguard Group. 3. Consider downsizing. Many retirees are hesitant to move out of the home where they raised their children, which is understandable for both emotional and practical reasons. But it might improve your financial stability to sell your current home and buy a less expensive one for retirement, pocketing the difference and investing it wisely. 4. Delay Social Security. For retirees who have not yet signed up to collect their Social Security benefits, it may be advisable to delay that start date as long as possible. This may sound counterintuitive if you are searching for financial stability, but research has found that most seniors will benefit from the higher payouts they will receive by deferring to age 70, if possible. 5. Increase cash flow. One way to raise the amount of cash available for funding your retirement is to work part-time, an option that is more available to seniors than ever before. Another possibility is to unlock cash tied up in assets that you might not even realize can be sold. For example, a life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such— you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner gets a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit when the original policyholder passes away. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. A comfortable retirement is possible without an enormous nest egg, but it is very difficult without at least some degree of financial stability. By staying out of debt, practicing smart personal finance and maximizing cash flow, the vision you had of your golden years could be within reach. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

delivered a compelling message, it also helped heighten the awareness of making positive and healthy decisions by our students. Their collective participation played a key role in the smooth facilitation of the event and was very much appreciated. A huge Thank You from Pittsford Sutherland High School to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance, Keenan Funeral Home, Sutherland Auto, and the Sutherland student actors for participating in the DWI crash reenactment on 5/14. It not only Last week I went to pass a Lady in an SUV. She couldn’t maintain a constant speed, going back and forth from 45 to 55 mph. A large dump truck was tailgating me. Kudos to Joanna Aguglia, St. Christopher’s Church, and Gates To Recovery. An open panel presentation/discussion was brought to our Church on May 20th. The topics were drug addiction, suicide/overdose statistics,
toxic vaping and how Gates To Recovery is there to help, 24/7. Over 75 people attended, and it was open to the public, very informative. The epidemics are real Stigmas must be erased in order for us and our loved ones to be understood and respected. These concerning issues are very, very active in our communities. To the person who cried censorship because a local movie theater isn’t showing a certain movie: If a government official prevents a movie from being shown, that is censorship. Movie theaters, however, can and do refuse to show movies all the time. It’s how private business works. Otherwise, it would also be censorship if a theater that caters to families isn’t showing a hard R movie.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM
DRIVER NEEDED
Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses.
Full & Part Time
LABORERS The busy summer season is quickly approaching! We are now looking for ambitious hardworking individuals to help set up and take down tents, help put up awnings, load and unload trucks, various production jobs, and misc. warehouse duties. Clean driver’s license is helpful.
In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.

The longer you have been working the larger your professional network likely is, so highlight those contacts in your interview and illustrate how you can put them to good use should you be hired.
