SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Continue to be loyal: A recent study from researchers at the Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. That highlights just how valuable repeat customers are to small businesses. Consumers who have had positive experiences with small businesses in their communities in the past can continue to support those companies by looking to them first when they need new products or services. Doing so not only helps small businesses retain more customers, but it increases the likelihood that consumers will again have positive buying experiences.

We raise Dairy Replacement Heifers, prime and choice beef steers and registered American Quarter Horses. In addition to raising livestock, we operate two feed mills. One facility recycles items from the human food production stream (‘pre-consumer’), diverting it from its previous fate of entering a landfill, and processing the mix into either a high quality bakery meal or a sugar product. 9778 Creek Rd. • Batavia, NY 14020 • (585) 344-4452

Discovering Cutting Edge Ag Tech with DeLaval

Laser Technology Green Laser Scarecrows: No, this isn’t science fiction; it’s a revolutionary technological innovation. As it turns out, birds—prevalent and extremely destructive agricultural pests—are sensitive to the color green. Armed with this knowledge, a University of Rhode Island researcher helped to design the first green laser scarecrow. Green laser light can reach out as far as 600,’ yet in sunlight, it is invisible to humans.

here can sometimes be a tendency to think of farming, with its ancient roots and traditions, as archaic, filled with horse-drawn plows and milking cows by hand. While there are certainly those who still use these older methods, today’s modern farms are filled with incredible agricultural technology. Some of the latest innovations are so advanced they seem like the stuff of fiction, yet they are available right in our metaphorical backyards. Automated Dairy Installations & Faromatics – Robotics, A.I. and Big Data Robotic Herd Monitoring: The smaXtec TruRumi™ is an example of bolus technology for dairy cows. This incredibly advanced piece of technology operates a little bit like an internal “Fitbit” inside each cow. The internal device sits inside each cow’s stomach (or reticulum) where it remains without being digested or passed. There, it constantly monitors a cow’s body temperature, activity levels, and rumination, an important factor in milk production and quality. This system, using its own cloud, sends data 24/7, allowing dairy farmers to detect concerns affecting an individual cow or group of cows. Thanks to its own A.I., the system also presents recommended actions, sends calving alerts, and can even recommend optimal feeding for each cow based on pH value measurement. Automated, Data Reporting Milking System: The DeLaval VMS V300 is one of the most sophisticated robotic milking systems on the market. DeLaval, with its local branches, is proud to offer its VMS V300 with its advanced control and monitoring capabilities. The system is fully remote and provides visual reports, analysis, and individual cow status, activity, location, performance statistics and data. Not only does this robotic system provide quicker and better attachment rates as well as better, faster, and smother milking performance, but it also cleans each teat, automatically separates pre-milk, and self-cleans after each milking. Says DeLaval, “The key technology that makes this possible is InSight. What you see is the smoothest, fastest, and most accurate arm that we’ve ever created. Driving this performance is the interplay of our most sophisticated camera, hardware and software ever seen in a milking environment.” Other examples of cutting-edge livestock farming technology include automated cleaning systems, Armenta’s non-antibiotic treatment using acoustic pulse technology (APT), and automated feeder systems.

Ken Elliot of Elliot Farm in Lakeville, Massachusetts put these new green laser scarecrows to the test. Elliot created nine of his own green laser scarecrow prototypes and put them to work. The results were astonishing. Using these scarecrows in conjunction with bird distress calls, Elliot was able to reduce his crop loss due to bird damage from 80% down to 8%. Typically, farmers can expect properly utilized green laser technology to reduce crop damage due to birds by as much as 70-90%. Autonomous Equipment Precision Farming Technology: Self-navigating Tractors, unlike self-driving cars which have yet to become safe and feasible, are a reality. Available locally through businesses like Monroe Tractor, precision farming services offer several benefits. With features such as GPS mapping and guidance, precision farming reduces labor, increases the precision of such automated equipment as tractors, harvesters, seeding and weeding devices, and more. These time saving devices allow farm families to improve their productivity with increased time to spend on other tasks. The field of agriculture is by no means static. As global populations grow and the demand for food increases, technological innovations in agriculture also continue to develop at an astounding rate. Our local farm families are on the forefront of these advancements, continuing to embrace new technologies as they strive for peak efficiency and production.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals. HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down. HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

For All Your Tree Care Needs

(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road.

24 Years Experience

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. “EQUAL OPPORTUNITY PROVIDER & EMPLOYER”

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

They stuffed over 2,400 envelopes for us, allowing us to continue providing emergency service to the Village of Bloomfield and The Town of East Bloomfield. Again, thank you! Thank you, Ladies! A HUGE thank you to Adrianne and Karen at UR Medicine in Geneseo (former Noyes facility) for your excellent customer service. Words cannot describe how much I appreciate you. - CBS Bloomfield Memorial Day Donations Thank you to all who donated to the Bloomfield Memorial Day Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). Through your generosity, $130 was raised and donated to WWP. We look forward to raising even more money next year for this worthy cause. Barb Thorpe

What is Wrong The United States should stop sending all these billions of dollars to other countries to help their war efforts. Next, it will be troops. We have too many places that need that money here for food, health care, jobs...I could go on and on. The idea is we need our tax dollars here. The government can’t take care of the Veterans we have now. (I know because I am a disabled Veteran.) I see all the time how we are taken care of. We should get rid of all the rich politicians and put middle class Americans in their jobs! Also, I just heard that the shooter from the Buffalo shooting pled not guilty. Come on! Let’s get real and call a murderer a murderer, and stop all the nonsense!

Some Things Never Change Some people forget the past. Those who believe that disarming a society makes everyone safer, I believe, are those people. When this country was founded, guns were used against the government at the time, which had become too powerful, and was trampling on the rights of its subjects. The founding of our country was, in part, because the right of the citizens to keep their government in check, was of utmost importance. Through the centuries, history has shown us that when a society is disarmed, they become subjects of the ruling class. The most recent example has been China, where they have subjected the population to the heavy fist of control. Even though our government has more powerful weapons than its citizens, we’ve also seen how a determined population can defend and beat back mighty military forces, as has happened in Afghanistan. I have never had any one of my firearms injure anyone on its own. If inanimate objects are the problem, best to get rid of cars and booze.

MOBILE PET GROOMING SERVICE One-on-one personal attention. Let us pamper your pet in our mobile unit!!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Look Into Crowdfunding to Rehome Inherited Pets

Penny Saver

Mr. Magoo

Hi, I am . I am a rescue from Mr. Gray’s Strays. I am very happy in my “furever” home.

PUPPY PALACE Full Grooming Services

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the person who “inherited” her relative’s pets but is unable to keep them. While directly posting the pets for adoption on social media may not be a good option for all of the reasons you previously listed, I do think there’s an opportunity for Sherrie to harness the reach of those platforms to raise the money she needs to get them rehomed properly and to cover their medical care. I’m continually amazed (and encouraged) by the kindness of strangers on GoFundMe pages for pets. -- Lauren P. DEAR LAUREN: That’s certainly an option to cover the cost of their care. Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular way to quickly raise cash to cover pets’ medical needs and care needs. GoFundMe has dedicated a page with several ideas for pet funding: https://www.gofundme.com/c/fundraising-ideas/ pets, and there is even a pet-specific crowdfunding organization, Waggle: https://www.waggle.org, which helps owners raise money for pets’ medical procedures. To crowdfund a pet’s care and treatment, do plenty of research first. Look at active fundraisers to see what messages are effective and double-check the rules about pet fundraising at each crowdfunding site. To rehome a pet, there is at least one online resource that may be helpful. Adopt-A-Pet and Petco’s rehome service (https://rehome. adoptapet.com/) is a go-between service that helps owners connect with people who are looking to adopt. I still recommend that Sherrie contacts the local shelter to get information about rehoming or, if all else fails, surrendering the pets safely to the shelter. But the above options may be a great help as she hunts for new owners for her relative’s pets. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles How to Defend Against the Newest Scams They’re getting better at what they do, more sophisticated and slick ... scammers, that is. They’ve had lots of practice, and many are truly skilled, but what they all have in common is that they want your money and your information. Scams against seniors get worse by the year, and the pandemic hasn’t helped. Many of the current scams are COVID-related: A scammer will offer to send you a box of at-home test kits -- for a fee. A fake contact tracer will call and claim to need to know your Social Security number for identity purposes. Some will say that your latest doctor bill won’t be paid unless you give them your Medicare number. Others will claim to need your banking information so they can do a direct deposit of the stimulus money the government is sending you. Some are new for this year: Supposed Amazon employees will call or send email to warn you about a large purchase. Fake rental-assistance payment scammers will try to get your personal information. Far too many seniors are scammed each and every day. In 2020, seniors lost over $1 billion to fraud, with an average loss of over $9,000. But you can stop it for yourself and not be a victim. Feel free to be rude. Hang up on people who are likely scammers. Don’t even bother saying goodbye. Just slam the phone down. Delete emails that have any links without clicking on them. Don’t bother opening the door to people you don’t know. Use a black marker to cover the information on old pill bottles. Bonus Tip: Invest in a shredder. Look for one that does confetti cuts (small pieces instead of strips). Shred everything that has your name, address and account or credit card numbers. Even envelopes with your name and address can give clues to scammers. Shred them.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

We Care About

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Your Smiles

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can She Donate Plasma Despite Gene Mutation?

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

TEETH WHITENING OPTIONS Most teeth whitening techniques use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to lighten teeth. While there are several at-home, over-the-counter teeth whitening options, these generally contain a lower percentage of peroxide, can take significantly longer than clinical treatments, and don’t produce as effective or long-lasting results as a professional treatment. Treatments supervised by a dental professional offer at-home options as well, in addition to in-clinic treatments. Custom-made whitening trays are fitted to your teeth, filled with peroxide-based gel, and can be applied at the clinic or in the comfort of your home. Other in-office options include peroxide gel application and power bleaching with a peroxide solution, both of which can be enhanced with LED light application.

Teeth not looking their whitest? Smile not shining its brightest? Take care of your problem with a visit to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. State-of-the-art dentistry and a dedicated professional dental team make 6 Batavia City Centre the ideal place to achieve optimum oral health. Let us be your gateway to a smile you will be glad to show. Comprehensive family dental care is available at our office, and a healthy, beautiful smile starts with a call to 585.343.4246.

DEAR DR. ROACH: When my mother

P.S. Over-the-counter teeth whitening products are usually applied for two to six hours daily for several days or weeks. Clinical treatments may require more than one office visit but take only 30 to 60 minutes each.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. discovered she has a factor V mutation, everyone in the family decided to be tested as a precaution. This is a hereditary item, which I am sure you know. It was determined that I carry the gene. I am 65. I have had no issues, and it probably never would have been discovered if we did not go looking for it. This was discovered over 10 years ago and is listed on all my charts. I would like to donate plasma for extra money. I am not on any type of blood thinners except for a baby aspirin every morning. I take a statin for cholesterol control. Can I donate my plasma? -- S.S. ANSWER: Factor V is a blood clotting factor made in the liver. A common mutation in the gene, called factor V Leiden, confers a small increased risk to developing blood clots. People with factor V Leiden and who have never had a blood clot are generally not started on medication to prevent one; however, they may need more aggressive prophylactic treatment to prevent clot at a time of surgery, for example. Although some experts use aspirin in this situation, there is not good evidence to support it. People with factor V Leiden may donate blood, platelets or plasma safely, as long as they are not on an anticoagulant such as warfarin. Only a very few medicines prevent people from donating blood. In addition to anticoagulants, these include medicines that can cause serious birth defects (such as Accutane, used for acne; finasteride and dutasteride, used for prostate enlargement and baldness; and Aubagio, a treatment for multiple sclerosis) and those which might cause infection risk (human-derived growth hormone). ***

Gardeners Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. Thanks. I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out. But common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground, and is difficult to remove. I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time. Common field milkweed, Asclepius syriaca, serves as both a preferred host plant (where these butterflies lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars feed) and a nectar source for adults. That’s why people encourage planting this specific plant.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County But Monarchs can use other types of milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens. They are more attractive and will not spread invasively like common milkweed. The article from the University of Vermont at the following link offers many details about monarchs and milkweed. https://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/articles/ monarch.html Our one-acre lawn is overrun with Creeping Charlie, and it is spreading daily. Is there a way to combat it without killing off the grass we’d like to save? Glechoma hederacea, better known as Creeping Charlie and ground ivy, is one of the most common and unfortunately hard to control lawn and garden weeds. A healthy lawn will help prevent creeping Charlie from getting established. Over-seeding bare spots in a lawn with an appropriate grass seed

will help crowd out the weed. Another strategy is to mow at a height of 3 inches. This allows grass to have healthier roots and blades as well as shade out weed seedlings. Hand weeding can be difficult and frustrating due to the fact that there are roots at many of the leaf nodes. If the soil is moist and you are careful to dig the roots, you will be more successful. Weeding them from garden beds is a lot easier. Removing them as soon as they show up is the key to success. A hoe, rake or dethatching tool can be helpful. If a herbicide is required, studies have shown that spring and fall are the best times to apply. More than a single season application may be needed. During the heat of the summer, plants are not growing as fast and not as susceptible to the effect of herbicides. These herbicides are directed at broadleaf plants, not grass, so are not likely useful in gardens or harmful to the grass. Lawn herbicides with multiple active ingredients are most effective against difficult to control weeds. Products that con-

tain triclopyr, such as Ortho Weed-B-Gon Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer have proven effective. So has Ortho Weed-B-Gon Max plus Crabgrass Control with quinclorac. Other brand products are available. Read the label for listed controls and application directions. Some information from http://erie.cce.cornell.edu/ resources/article-42-creeping-charlie-may-2017

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable. BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working. EMPLOYMENT

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Having a yard sale? Here’s a great way to put out extra signs when you don’t have a way to stake them into the ground: “Write your sign advertising your yard sale on the sides of a big box. Place it where you want it, and add a large rock to the inside, then tape shut. We did this when we had no poles to tape signs to or any other way to get them to stand up. It worked really well!” -- D.R. in Georgia * Avoid calling the pediatrician’s office on Monday mornings for routine business. Wait until the afternoon. All the parents with mildly sick children over the weekend will be calling to consult with the doctor and nurses first thing when the office opens. * If you drop an egg, sprinkle with salt before you attempt to clean it up. The salt binds the whites, which will not spread, making pickup easier! * “My kids had kind of an obsession with colorful Duck tape in the past year, and we made some “beach bags” to keep our electronics safe at the pool, lake and beach. We carefully covered a variety of sizes of zipper-top self-sealing bags with the tape, creating tough, colorful pouches in which we can store cellphones, etc., to keep them safe from water damage.” -- W.L. in North Carolina * You can sharpen scissors by cutting folded aluminum foil into small strips. * The best time of day to water your lawn is the evening. The cooler temperatures allow the water to sink into the soil instead of evaporating with the heat of the day. Always follow your city or county guidelines on watering times for your area. DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
