Hi! My name is , (or Pooder or Love Muppet, that’s ok, I answer to all of them!) I had nowhere to live and then was shipped to my hooman from Arizona and I got here on Sbowl Sunday during a blizzard! What’s this word you say snow? I’m a Komondor and if I weren’t hanging around my moms on the couch I would be protecting a herd of sheep in Hungary where they think I’m a national treasure! In 6 years I’ll have loooong dreadlocks and look like a mop! Hooray!

Puzzle Answers This Week
DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS GIVE OR TAKE
(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. There, budding drivers can also learn how to pass the written test the first time.

Let us give you that spring fresh home! Professional Area Rug Cleaning & Hard Surface Cleaning
LEAVE SPRING CLEANING TO THE PROS!
S E V RA Thank you! We want to give a huge Thank You to the gentleman who paid for our meals at Jo Andy’s on May 25th. We sincerely appreciate your kindness and will do likewise in the near future. May God bless you for your generosity! What a trip! Last Wednesday evening, I was taking my dog for a walk near my home in Corfu. My dog suddenly pulled me, and I tripped over him to avoid stepping on him. I fell off the curb and into the street, severely breaking both my wrist and elbow. A very kind neighbor, who happened to be a nurse, was driving and saw me fall. She stopped, and after assessing the situation, called 911. Before I knew what was happening, more neighbors were there to help as well as the police and ambulance. Someone even took my dog home for me! It’s all pretty much a blur to me, but thank you so very much to all who came to my rescue!
Save Time & Money – Call Burris Cleaning! 585-589-1754 • www.burriscleaning.com
Not a single thank you In response to a recent person looking for incontinence underwear: I did the best I could with what I no longer needed, and I dropped off perhaps a dozen packages to the site specified by the requester in phone calls, after driving dozens of miles in each direction. Later I called the intermediary who had actually posted the request to confirm that the person in need had received the items. Several calls and emails went out without a word in reply. I particularly urged several times that the ultimate recipient make sure they looked through all the open packages. Why? Because in one of the open packages I left an envelope inside with a $100 bill in it so the ultimate recipient could purchase more underwear. No answers at all. Not a single thank you. What to do? I live in a seniors apartment complex. We have a nosy, busybody who, if she hears something good or bad (but mostly the bad) can’t wait to spread it all over. That wouldn’t be so bad, but most of the time, what she is spreading is not true. She is just a mean and disgusting old biddy. What can be done with someone like this? Debt If you include the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security, our national debt is over $100 trillion. How bad does it have to get before you agree social security, medicare, and medicaid (the biggest debt drivers) need to go away? Not cut, completely go away. Stop calling it “my social security.” It was never yours to begin with. Your grandparents survived just fine before Medicare/Medicaid. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution does it guarantee any standard of living or any length of life. Raising prices! I understand that prices are going up at pretty much every restaurant you go to due to the economy, but can these restaurants please update their websites and let people know about the increase! I ordered a pizza special from a local place. It said one price online, but when I picked it up it was actually $10 more! I’m all about helping out our local businesses, but I wasn’t happy about paying so much more than I thought. I probably would have gone somewhere else had I known.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Want bananas to last a little longer? Do not separate your bunch, and wrap the tip in foil. * “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” -- M.L. in Virginia
Byron-Bergen Future Farmers of America (FFA) students!
T
he New York State FFA (Future Farmers of America) convention was virtual this year, but that didnít stop Byron-Bergen FFA members from garnering honors and awards. Rachel Best and Madelynn Pimm both earned Empire Degrees, the first Byron-Bergen FFA members to do so since its inception in 2017. Justin Deleo, Gary Donofrio, Carter Kuipers, and Brendan Pimm also competed in the Junior Tool Identification competition. The Empire Degree is the highest honor students can receive at the State level. To receive this honor, FFA participants must meet several requirements including longevity within the organization, 360 hours of agricultural education above the 9th grade level, 25 hours of community service, serving as an FFA officer, delivering a speech on an agricultural topic, and be in excellent academic standing. Additionally, Best has served as the FFA District 9 President for this year, and Pimm received a Silver Proficiency Award in Sheep Production.
* To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. It can then be left on the counter for several days to ripen. * “After a hard day’s work in the garden, I soak in a rosemary bath. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory, and it smells wonderful. I just add a few sprigs from my plant out back to very hot water, and then let the water sit for a while until it’s just warm. Then I get in. Heaven!” -- U.A. in Ohio
“Receiving an Empire Degree is a very big deal,” said Byron-Bergen FFA Advisor Jeffrey Parnapy. “These two students are dedicated to the field of agriculture and worked very hard to earn this prestigious title.” In the Junior Tool Identification competition, the team of Deleo and Kuipers scored high and placed third in the state. Deleo also ranked fourth individually. “I really can’t say enough about the enthusiasm and dedication of our FFA members,” said Parnapy. “Placing third and fourth in state-wide competitions is amazing and I’m excited to see what the future brings for our FFA chapter.”
* Keep laundry baskets in your automobile’s trunk for easier organization. You could even add a small cooler to hold cold items if you need to make a stop somewhere on the way home from the grocery store. * “Here’s my tip: Use a muffin pan to make big ice cubes for drinks.” -- A.L. in Missouri GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

MAKE LIGHTS SPARKLE If you cannot remove a fixture for cleaning, use a sturdy stool, a spray bottle with your cleaning mixture and a soft cloth to wipe away the dirt. Remember to place something absorbent beneath the light to catch any drips. Do not spray liquids directly onto light bulbs; otherwise, you can damage the bulb and the electrical components.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Call “The Tree Service”
Fight Dander Allergies on Multiple Fronts
HOME SERVICES
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? -Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri DEAR JEMMA: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control -- so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny -- 75 microns or smaller, which isn’t visible to the naked eye -- it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter -- one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktop-sized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. If these activities trigger allergies, consider wearing a filter mask and goggles to hopefully reduce the reaction. Send your comments, tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Fighting Back Against Rising Food Prices This week I scored a grocery discount of $5.21, plus over $6 in free groceries by using the store coupons. Added to that was $12 in free items I took to the local food bank. All of this is because I signed up for another grocery store’s customer loyalty card. It took a few weeks, but eventually the store’s computer figured out my favorite brands and items I routinely purchased, and turned those into discount coupons. It included free items to get me to sample different brands. And then there’s the food bank donation. It feels good, when you’re only a short step from needing that service yourself, to be able to give to those who have even less. The free items offered by the grocery store coupons can help beef up the supplies they have at the food bank, and in some cases might even be treats for those who can’t afford them. I thought about that when I grabbed the mega oversize candy bar offered with a free coupon: Somebody’s kids might not have had sweets in a very long time. And then there are our own pantries. For so long stores couldn’t get certain items. Once those were in stock again, some of us grabbed several extra, just in case. Now some of those items are once again not in stock, but for the most part they are. And now we have extra in our kitchen cabinets. It’s time to look at expiration dates and consider the reality: Will we really use up four boxes of pasta in the next month before they expire? If not, perhaps they could be donated to the food bank. If grocery prices are going to keep rising and rising, this is one way to fight back. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

IS THE AIR AFFECTING YOUR MOUTH? We can do a lot to maintain healthy, strong teeth and gums, such as keeping them clean by brushing and flossing twice a day and keeping our dental check-up appointments every six months. Once we step out of the house, however, we are vulnerable to the effects of our environment, and so are our mouths. A recent study has shown that people who are exposed to poor air quality are more likely to develop mouth cancer in spite of good dental hygiene. This is because higher levels of particulate matter are breathed in through the mouth. Particulate matter can contain heavy metals (especially in areas with petrochemical plants), which are known to cause cancer.
Our many years of experience have taught us that prevention is a key factor in maintaining good oral health as well as overall health. If you are new to the Batavia area and are looking for a family dentist, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL would like to extend a welcome and an invitation to visit our office. We know how difficult it can be to find qualified professionals without reliable references. However, we feel that with our approach and our commitment to excellence, we have something unique to offer at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment.
P.S. Oral cancer is one of the few known cancers whose numbers continue to rise, growing by more than a third in the last decade.

31 years) who is concerned about Charcot-MarieTooth syndrome. Her maternal grandmother has been diagnosed with that condition. She is interested in seeking out a genetic test for the condition to learn if she is susceptible. She was referred to a commercial, direct-to-consumer laboratory for the test. How likely is it that a lab test for this specific condition would be accurate? Should she be doing all of this through either a particular type of genetics counselor or her private physician (internist) rather than an independent effort? -- R.C. ANSWER: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the eponym given to a family of hereditary motor sensory neuropathies: diseases that affect the nerves that carry the impulses necessary for movement and sensation. The initial symptoms are most commonly weakness and atrophy in the feet, followed by similar problems in the hands and sensory changes. The diagnosis may be made by EMG testing (electromyography, a needle study of the electrical activity of the muscles), but genetic testing is another way of making the diagnosis. If her grandmother has a known mutation, then genetic testing is likely to give her confirmation of her own status. Commercial genetic testing is certainly available, and probably accurate. However, I would still recommend a visit to a genetic counselor. This may require a referral from her primary-care doctor. The correct test to order, and its interpretation, depends on the exact diagnosis of her grandmother’s condition, since there are many genetic variations of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. It is likely that your daughter will have questions after the test results, and the benefit of having an experienced clinician there to answer them would be invaluable. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 32

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective.
