PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Pet Place _____________________2

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

BESTCENTER BUSINESS EMPLOYEE SKILLS TRAINING

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

‘Hip Hold’ Is No Way to Stretch Your Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My wife likes to pick up our dog’s hind legs to help him stretch; that is, she holds Cheerio by the hips so his hind legs are up off the ground while he stands on his front legs. I thought I read once that this is not good and strains the dog’s joints or back or something. Your advice would be appreciated. -- Zina J. DEAR ZINA: The “hip hold” is a safety grip to pull your dog away from a fight with another dog. It’s not a hold that should be forced or held for long periods. Stretching should be performed by owners when the dog’s joints are not weighted -- meaning the dog should not be standing or leaning on the leg being stretched. Holding Cheerio up by his hindquarters and forcing him to brace on his front legs puts him at greater risk for injury. It can cause great pain in older dogs with arthritis. If your wife would truly like to keep Cheerio’s joints healthy and improve his overall circulation and well-being, there are some great safe stretching methods, and safe massage techniques as well. Here’s a YouTube video of safe dog stretching exercises by a veterinary therapist: tinyurl.com/4ay7sfjc. Notice that at no point does the therapist stretch a joint that the dog is standing on -- they are all unweighted stretches. Dogs also stretch themselves frequently, especially when getting up after a long nap. Don’t try to assist their natural stretching -- dogs stretch in a way that’s comfortable for them. Therapeutic stretching and massage are designed to help facilitate a dog’s natural movement without placing stress on the joints. If you have more questions about your dog’s mobility, talk with the vet at his next checkup. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Keep cargo off the roof. Rooftop cargo boxes can be convenient when traveling on vacations. However, researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory report that such boxes can reduce fuel economy by a significant percentage depending on where drivers are driving. City drivers with rooftop cargo boxes may experience a 2 to 8 percent decline in fuel economy, while vacationers traveling at interstate speeds may notice a decline as high as 25 percent. Cargo boxes are convenient, but they’re not very aerodynamic, so it’s best to remove them after returning home from vacation.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

Holley’s Geometry in Construction Class Installs Classroom Barn at Homesteads for Hope BY B E T H N A S H

A

few weeks ago, the Holley Middle School/High School Geometry in Construction class installed the classroom barn they built for Homesteads for Hope (H4H). They transported their “work in progress” to H4H located at 2185 Manitou Road in Rochester and completed the installation of the barn to be used as a Social Garden Classroom. Holley math teacher Russ Albright and technology teacher Dylan Sharpe co-teach Geometry in Construction, with students rotating between math days and building days each week. There are 19 students in this year’s class, with the majority in 10th grade. The class helps students learn how math concepts can be applied to real-world problems to create solutions. Students combined their math and construction skills to build a 16’ x 32’ classroom barn for H4H this year.

Holley students are still working to complete the 2022 Geometry in Construction barn on site.

In the fall, students went on a field trip to the H4H farm so they could better understand how this organization operates and where the barn would be placed on the property. Building this additional classroom space enables H4H to expand their Social Garden Program, summer camps, and field trips. H4H is a non-profit community farm that is all-inclusive and provides a place where young adults of all abilities can learn, work, live, and grow. Students planned for the project by working on a scale model of the barn. The barn was staged on a specially built platform at school before it was dismantled and transported to H4H to be installed permanently. This is the third barn that Holley students have built on the H4H property in the last few years. Students will carry the skills learned in this class with them beyond high school to be used in future jobs or to make home repairs. “Students enjoy this class because they can see the realworld application of math,” said Albright. “Many students who don’t traditionally perform well in math class are performing much better in this class.” The scores from previous year’s Regents Exams continue to show that Geometry in Construction students score better than traditional Geometry class students. Regardless of how students perform on any Geometry test, they leave class feeling proud of completing a community service project that helps others.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

HOW TO PREP YOUR YARD FOR SUMMER PARTIES Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * “Brave New World” author Aldous Huxley became almost completely blind as a teenager. He regained much of his sight later in life, crediting an unorthodox treatment known as “The Bates Method,” which recommends never using eyeglasses and exposing one’s eyes regularly to sunlight.

THE IMPACT

By Fifi Rodriguez 1. HISTORY: In what year did the Boston Tea Party take place?

REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES.

2. MOVIES: Which 1990s animated movie has a character named Lumiere?

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback.

5. TELEVISION: Which TV sitcom was set at Greendale Community College?

Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services.

7. GEOGRAPHY: Bantry Bay is an inlet in which European country?

4. LANGUAGE: What is a zoonotic disease?

Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

6. ANATOMY: What blood type does a universal donor have?

8. FOOD & DRINK: What are sweetbreads? 9. LITERATURE: What kind of bird is titled in a John Keats’ poem? 10. SCIENCE: What does an auxanometer measure?

Answers 1. 1773, when colonists dumped a shipment of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest taxes. 2. “Beauty and the Beast” 3. Bob Dylan 4. A disease that can pass from one species to another, especially animals to humans. 5. “Community” 6. O negative 7. Ireland 8. Organ meat from the pancreas and thymus gland 9. “Ode to a Nightingale” 10. Plants’ rate of growth

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. 4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE

We Care About

In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year.

Your Smiles

Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

COCONUT OIL FOR DENTAL HEALTH Many people are aware of the benefits of coconut oil when it comes to healthy hair and skin and controlling body weight and cholesterol. Coconut oil can also improve dental health. Coconut oil has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for nearly 4,000 years for its power as a natural antibiotic with immune-boosting capabilities. The fatty acids in coconut oil give it antibacterial properties that can clean and whiten teeth, protect gums, reduce bad breath, and improve overall oral health. The process of “oil pulling”—swishing coconut oil around inside the mouth—is reported to remove bacteria that causes tooth decay and bad breath. Oil pulling produces a cleansing effect, reducing adhesion of plaque and bacteria to teeth.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.

We have lots of good ideas on how to help keep your mouth a healthy one. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL we strongly believe that one of the most important services we render our patients is a plan for preventive care. Along with daily brushing and flossing, one crucial tool to your good dental health is regular professional care. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we have office hours by appointment. Please call us at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. Coconut oil metabolites (substances necessary for metabolism) have been shown to prevent resistance organisms from forming in the mouth and other parts of the body.

www.bataviafamilydental.com

3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

What Is the Optimal Blood Pressure? ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that high blood pressure is 140/90, but I thought 120/70 was optimal. Has the standard number increased? – D.M.I. ANSWER: The “pressure” in “blood pressure” is given in millimeters of mercury. It is a measurement of the pressure inside large blood vessels, first at its peak during the left ventricle squeezing (the systolic, or top number) and then at its lowest, right before the ventricle starts squeezing again (diastolic, or bottom number). Both of these numbers are important, and they provide important information about the physiology of the heart and blood vessels, as well as provide prognostic information about the risk of heart attack and stroke. In general, for healthy people, the higher the numbers, the greater the risk. The optimum blood pressure for health is about 110/70, but there are some people with lower values who are also very healthy and who have very low risk for vascular disease. Risk for heart disease starts to go up more significantly at about 140/90, but above a systolic number of 160, the risk goes up even more dramatically. The trend in blood pressure control over recent years has been toward making the blood pressure closer to the optimum, as long as treatment is well-tolerated. Having a slightly lower risk of heart attack may not be worth it to a person who has significant symptoms from blood pressure medicines. Fortunately, blood pressure is much easier to control than it used to be with better medications and with non-drug treatments, such as stress reduction, healthy diet, regular moderate exercise and, for some people, salt restriction. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 30

Pet in Car

S E V RA

To the couple in a [local town] convenience store who were concerned that a dog was left alone inside a car: you looked as you walked by, but with shaded windows you couldn’t see inside. You even went into the store, and an employee asked around about who owns the car. My wife told her I was inside. I was sitting in the back seat with our pet. THANK YOU, to the couple and the store employee, for taking the initiative.

Stupid Idea On this morning’s news was the report of another mass shooting in a school in Texas. It was suggested by someone, who I believe must have stock in one of the gun-producing companies, that teachers carry guns. Great. That means that there would be more guns that can fall into the hands of someone who should never have access to a gun, such as the young man who killed all those children and teachers in Texas. I wish that there would never be another incident like what was on the news, but if it should happen again, it might prove to be best if all the victims were family members of those who are against gun control. Maybe that would change their thinking on the need for even greater gun control measures than have ever yet been presented to Congress. Public Obscenity The 1st Amendment states that obscenity is not protected under the rights to free speech. No one has a right to tell everyone in society, regardless of age, to f*** off! Little children are being forced to believe this is acceptable? Come on, folks. Speak up! Call your town’s supervisor and demand action. It is a community that sets the standard according to the federal obscenity laws, so let’s unite and set a better standard for our community. Our town has an ordinance against marijuana sales. We can do the same thing for vulgar, profane displays in yards. Remember the frog in the frying pan? We are not so desensitized that we accept being told [this] every time we drive down our main road, are we? The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, but you can do something. Please speak up!

Change it back! “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” That is the Second Amendment in our Constitution. It exists not because of hunting, or defending against foreign attack. The founders feared a standing army would present a clear and present danger to individual liberty: in other words, government tyranny. Guns are a necessary fabric to the security of a free state. Stereotyping I was taught stereotyping is morally and ethically wrong. I still believe that. Why is stereotyping in the media acceptable, and nobody seems to speak out? With a population of 300 million plus, Police Officers nationwide are “walking on eggshells” because of a few bad cops. Now, because one individual carrying out a horrific hate crime, [many] across our country are being stereotyped as racist and supremacist. In both examples, these crimes have been horrific and carried out by bad individuals. We need to stop the stereotyping all around. Stereotyping makes relations worse.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles The Local Food Bank Needs Your Help If you’re on the other side of the fence -- able to donate to the food bank rather than visiting to use its services -- your local pantry can surely use your help. Running them is more complicated and expensive than it might seem! The food bank in my town gets most of its food from the main supplier in the state, which gets its support from philanthropists, business partners, manufacturers, producers, farmers and donors of both food and money. It then distributes food and supplies to the local food banks. The local food bank has to pay for what it receives, of course, with its own supply of cash donors and town support. In addition, there are local businesses that donate leftover breads and bakery items, farmers that bring in fresh produce and frozen meat, and folks in town who donate both cash and food. What food banks typically need: canned vegetables, fruit, soup, stews and beans; pasta, peanut butter and jelly; tuna, cereals and personal-care items like toothpaste and soap. But there are specialty items they need as well, things that are hard for the food banks to get: pet food and lactose-free milk, for example, that are very important to those who need them. (I’ve made it my goal to try to provide some of these items to the food bank each month.) If you’re in a position to help, search online for your local food bank to see what it currently needs, or make a phone call. Ask if it posts on a website or Facebook page. Your best bet, however, might be to donate money. Most food banks have more purchasing power at the store than we do; their dollar goes much further because they don’t pay retail. And they can use those dollars to target the specific needs of their clientele. Ask! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES Participate in LGBTQ+ events. Public participation in events like Spirit Day, which is a day to support LGBTQ+ youth in their fight against bullying, is a great way for business owners to declare their support and respect for the local LGBTQ+ community. Pitch in with donations generated through sales or additional fundraising efforts and promote events via social media. Events such as Spirit Day are great ways to raise awareness and promote understanding, and they also provide ideal opportunities for business owners and their staffs to publicly express their support for the local LGBTQ+ community.

GIBRALTAR

YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP SAVE A CHILD’S LIFE (NAPSI)—Seven-year-old Julián Morales seems like any other young boy—he loves playing video games, watching baseball, spending time with his little sister and eating chocolate ice cream—but there’s a big difference. The Problem Unlike most children, Julián suffers from a rare, life-threatening blood disorder. His only hope for a cure is an unrelated blood stem cell donor. “It’s very difficult because Julián can’t do everything like other children his age,” said Mayra Garcia, Julián’s mother. “We want to see our son healed. But that may not happen if we cannot find a blood stem cell match.” Julián’s search for his perfect donor is more difficult because of his Hispanic ethnicity, which is a blend of Mexican and Nicaraguan. Even at the largest and most diverse blood stem cell registry in the world, only 7 percent of the more than 19 million registry members are Hispanic. As a result, Hispanic patients fighting blood cancer such as leukemia or blood disorders have only a 46 percent chance of finding a fully matched blood stem cell donor compared to a 77 percent chance for those who are white. Because people are more likely to match someone of their same ethnic background, Julián’s family is hoping more Hispanics will join the national Be The Match Registry. People from diverse backgrounds, particularly Hispanic or mixed ethnicities, can register to become a potential donor and help save a life. Those between the ages of 18 and 44 are most urgently needed since they’re requested by transplant doctors more than 85 percent of the time and research shows that these donors provide the greatest chance for transplant success. What You Can Do To be a part of the solution, visit https://join.bethematch.org/saveJulian and complete the online registration form. You’ll get a swab kit with easyto-follow instructions on how to complete the registration process at home and return the swab samples in the mail. Becoming a donor is safe, free and confidential. How It Works About one in every 430 U.S. Be The Match Registry members go on to donate to a patient. If someone is identified as a genetic match for a searching patient, he or she will be asked to donate blood stem cells. Most often, blood stem cell donation is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure similar to donating platelets or plasma. Learn More: For further facts about blood stem cell transplants, how they can cure blood cancers and how you can help others, go to www.BeTheMatch.org.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Don’t choose a career based on salary alone. Monster.com says that being financially strategic when choosing a new career is important, but shouldn’t be the only factor. Your personal values, experience and other factors such as family should weigh heavily into your decision as well.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a small bit of boiling water to a glass of iced tea to clear it up if it is cloudy. You can do this to a pitcher just before serving. * If you’re traveling with pets, you know you’ll need to bring something for them to drink out of. If you have ice in a container, they can lick the ice to stay hydrated, but it doesn’t slosh around or spill easily. * “Cutting corn off the cob can be tricky business, but you only need to recruit the right equipment. The next time you’re making corn for dinner, grab a Bundt pan. The corn cob gets set upright in the center, and when you cut down, the kernels fall right into the pan on all sides.” -- A.S. in Texas * “If you have trouble holding your cat still to clip its claws, sneak up while it’s asleep. You might get only a couple done before your cat catches on and wriggles away, but you’ll get there.” -- P.L. in Oklahoma (Slow and steady wins the race, P.L. Your tip works great for babies, too! -- JoAnn) * Skunk run-in? Try this mix before you buy pricey de-stink shampoos at the pet store. Mix a quart of 3% peroxide, a teaspoon or two of dish soap, 1/4 cup of baking soda and quart of room-temperature water. Apply to pet, and work deeply into the fur. Massage in for five minutes, and rinse thoroughly. * Boiling potatoes? Plants love starch. Let your cooking water cool, then use it to water the plants in your garden. EMPLOYMENT

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.
