CELEBRATE ENERGY STAR DAY - EVERY DAY (NAPSI)—Every Fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) celebrates ENERGY STAR Day to raise awareness about the benefits of saving energy today, tomorrow, and for good. The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. American consumers interested in saving money on their utility bills can look for the blue ENERGY STAR label to identify products—in categories such as electronics, appliances, smart thermostats, and lighting-that have been independently certified to use less energy. According to the EPA, outfitting your home with these products could save you 30 percent—or about $575—on your household energy bills, while avoiding more than 5,500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Utilities, product manufacturers, and retailers around the country join the celebration and offer special deals that help make energy efficiency accessible and affordable for everyone. In some communities, manufacturers of ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs work with electric utilities to provide low-cost LED bulbs at major discount and DIY retailers. 585-345-0915 Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced.

Yard salers beware! So much work goes into setting up a yard/garage sale. Ours was last Friday & Saturday in [local town]. Sales were very slow, and on Saturday, we had a thief visit us. When picking up, we noticed a $10 item was missing. Someone was low enough to steal it. It must have been someone without a conscience. Thanks a lot! So everybody, watch all the people you let into your sale. Like I said, sales were very slow, and it takes so much work to put things out and pack things up afterwards only to have someone do this, too.
S E V RA St. Martin's Sale Thank you to everyone who supported the St. Martin Lutheran Annual Garage Sale, either through your donations or purchases. Proceeds go to support underprivileged children in our area. Unexpected generosity This past week, I ran into Penfield Wegmans to pick up a few things we needed for Dad's Day brunch. When I went to check out, I couldn’t find my wallet. I carry a huge purse which makes finding things a challenge. While I was still searching, a woman came up out of the blue and offered to pay for my groceries. I thanked her for her generosity. I am a firm believer in paying it forward which I will do in some fashion! Clean up thanks! To all those - Village Crew, Law Enforcement, Fire Department, Utility Crews & more - who helped clean up the village and restore power to Avon after the storm on Monday: thank you! Your hard work is very much appreciated! Play ball! It was great to have Avon Little League back this year! Thank you to all of the parents who made it possible, taking care of everything from organizing to coaching!
True Colors Flying the American Flag means freedom for all Americans. Freedom means freedom of choice, freedom to live your life as the best you can, freedom to let other people live their lives regardless of color. Too many times lately, people are only looking at the color of someone’s skin but not what is in their heart. The color of a person’s skin does not define the kind of person they are. To those who only look at skin color: shame on you! Social Security Theft From every paycheck since I was 15, the state of NY has taken out taxes and social security. For 40 years, I have been paying Social Security and have been receiving an annual letter detailing what my Social Security benefit will be based on what I earned and paid into it. I could not opt out of it and use that money for the here and now. So, it is my Social Security. It was established by FDR in 1935 to give the working class some financial security as they reached retirement age. It’s not for the politicians to spend or for the offended-by-everything generation to spend. It’s mine. It’s your parents’ and your grandparents’, not yours to denounce as not our right to recieve. If you want it abolished, go ahead and lobby for its end, but don’t you dare tell us 50+ individuals that we are causing the deficit. We paid into it and deserve what we were told was coming to us. What you are suggesting is the equivalent of stealing, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Thank you, neighbors! Thank you to all our neighbors for helping us pick up our fallen tree limbs and to the people who stopped to see if we were okay! We live in such a great community!

DEAR DR. ROACH: In December, I developed an abscess
www.salmonorthodontics.com
Having wisdom teeth removed almost seems to be a rite of passage, but it is not always necessary. For some people, this third set of molars arrives in the back of the mouth healthy and with plenty of space to grow. However, wisdom teeth sometimes do not have enough room to grow properly, which can cause crowding, pushing the other teeth out of place. For some patients, the third molars grow in crooked, which can lead to cysts, tumors, and gum disease. In most cases, a dental visit will expose any potential problems with the development of wisdom teeth and they can be removed before they cause any issues or symptoms.
C. Diff Tricky to Treat, But Rarely Terminal in my jaw from food getting caught in my tooth. I went to see a local dentist who prescribed clindamycin and metronidazole. I came down with a case of C. difficile. I have since found evidence that multiple antibiotics and clindamycin are causes of C. diff. I am getting mixed messages about my prognosis. Some medical people are telling me it’s not a big deal and to just wash my hands a lot. My primary physician, however, gave me the impression that this is basically a terminal diagnosis. She told me how sorry she was and that I had been a very healthy person but am not any longer. She told me that it will most likely recur, and every time it does it will be more difficult to treat until I become antibiotic resistant, and that people die from it. She also told me that she would set me up for the standard yearly appointment, but that I should come see her whenever I need to. I am paranoid about what my future holds and what, if anything, I can do. I would like your opinion of this situation. Any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Clostridium difficile (“C. diff”) infections are common but can be serious. As you correctly note, many antibiotics are associated with the acquisition of symptomatic C. diff infections, and although clindamycin is the best known, other antibiotics (quinolones, amoxicillin and related penicillins) are actually more common. The antibiotics kill off large numbers of healthy bacteria, allowing the unhealthy C. diff to take over. The cardinal symptom of C. diff is watery diarrhea, at least three loose stools in 24 hours. Abdominal pain and cramping, nausea and poor appetite are common. Fever is less common. Symptoms can start during antibiotic treatment or up to a month after completing antibiotics. Treatment is stopping the antibiotic if possible and if still being given. Antibiotic treatment against C. diff is with the newer drug fidaxomicin or with oral vancomycin; unfortunately, fidaxomicin is ridiculously expensive -- a course of fidaxomicin is $3,000 via goodrx.com in the U.S. at the time of writing. A course of oral vancomycin costs much less, often less than $200 through the same website. If neither of these is available, metronidazole is a less-expensive alternative. Fidaxomicin has the lowest risk of recurrence of the infection, and many experts will reserve it for a person who has recurred after oral vancomycin. For the unusual person who continues to recur after antibiotic treatment, fecal microbiota transplants (processed from stool of healthy donors) have been safe and effective. I am disturbed that you got the impression that C. diff is a terminal diagnosis. Although in rare cases, hospitalized patients can get so sick that they can die from C. diff, this would be very unusual in less severe disease, as in someone who is able to go home from the hospital. Handwashing is necessary to reduce infection to others. Avoiding drugs like Prilosec that suppress acid can help prevent recurrences. Finally, probiotics (live healthy bacteria) may be of use in reducing infection and recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Staying Hydrated in Summer Heat If there is any mantra we need to repeat this summer it’s this one: drink more liquids. A university study revealed that 80% of heat-related deaths were in people over the age of 60. We need to do everything we can to avoid dehydration when the weather is hot. As we age, many of us don’t have the same body temperature regulation. Poor circulation and lack of thirst can make us vulnerable to the effects of heat. Of those, lack of thirst is the easiest to address, and drinking more water doesn’t need to be a chore. Find out from your doctor just how many ounces you need to drink in a day. Some medications, such as diuretics, might change how your body reacts to heat and dehydration. Ask whether you need an electrolyte-replacement drink for added potassium and sodium. By the numbers: Buy several smaller water bottles and fill with water as many as you need each day to reach the required number of ounces. Keep them on the kitchen counter, where you’ll see them. Keep oranges, strawberries and watermelons handy, or make your own fruit popsicles. Keep an eye on the TV news and weather. Know what temperatures and humidity are expected during the day, especially early afternoon. If you walk for exercise, try to go in the morning. Make a few calls and find out about any cooling stations near you, or air-conditioned spaces such as a mall, if you don’t have air conditioning at home. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

News Media Professionals Honored at the Field of Thanks BY SCOTT WURTZEL
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Honoring heroes at a Field of Thanks
Pets Shell-Shocked by Nightly Fireworks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is with the constant setting off of loud fireworks almost every night for the past year? My two dogs are so stressed out that they are sleeping with me at night. -- Larry H., via email DEAR LARRY: I experienced similar nightly fireworks throughout the pandemic. There are many theories as to why fireworks were so popular, but I prefer to go with the most obvious: Some people had little else to do, and no regard for their neighbors. My pets are not too fazed by the occasional crackle of firecrackers, which still goes on here even though the pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted. But some of our neighbors had much bigger fireworks and enjoyed setting them off around midnight or later, with no warning. My pets came flying into the bedroom when these were set off. As a pet owner, it’s frustrating to see our companions suffer from someone else’s carelessness. Even worse, authorities haven’t seemed interested in enforcing noise or fireworks regulations. As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, plan ahead to make things easier for your pets. Create a safe space for your dogs to go to when fireworks go off. Some dogs absolutely need this and can’t be comforted by a hug or treats. A friend of mine created a little den in the corner of her mudroom using scrap plywood, putting bedding and old clothes inside so her giant mutt “Ollie” can hide from loud noises. Talk to your dogs’ vet as well about medication to keep them calmer through the holiday, which may help them better deal with the trauma caused by fireworks. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

H
eroes can come in many different forms. One is that of those who sacrifice and work hard for the betterment of their community. The Field of Thanks has been made to honor and memorialize those individuals.
●
The Field of Thanks took place from June 6th to June 13th, on the front lawn of St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia. The week-long event featured 70 American flags that were displayed to honor essential workers, first responders, and military veterans in the community. One of the flags displayed was bought by a patron to honor “News Media Professionals,” specifically WBTA, The Batavia Daily News, The Batavia, and your Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Dawn Mark is one of the coordinators of the event, and she shares an in-depth look on the event and why “News Media Professionals” were included. “This is the first time we have hosted a Field of Thanks, so these are all new heroes,” explains Mark, not that Phyllis Draycott conceived the project with the desire to bring the community together after a difficult 15 months. “There are 74 community members from all walks of life who were chosen by their neighbors for reasons ranging from appreciation for the simple, poignant love of a mother to heralding the bravery of one of the most dangerous of Army positions: the cavalry scout. Plaques reflect the grieving for creative lives cut short by COVID and by contrast, feelings of joy and victory felt by COVID survivors. The first responders and medical staff who are being honored worked many extra shifts to save lives and to keep our community safe and ticking along as normally as possible. Half of the plaques are military, ranging from WWI through those in active service. More than on Memorial Day or on Veterans Day, these plaques tell a bit more about the men and women behind the tribute. The pictures look like something out of a Hollywood movie. The bottom line is that there is a whole lot of love and pride reflected on this lawn, and that is the great unifier everyone involved has in common.” Mark also goes on to explain the circumstances leading to a patron purchasing a flag for multiple media outlets. “Each branch of the community media has its niche, and they are all vital,” she said. “The newspaper puts it in black and white in something you can tangibly hold, especially if you don’t have a computer and something as seemingly insignificant as the comics and puzzle section became something positive to look forward to every day.” Mark also praises online media for being a fast and accurate source of what is happening in “the now,” as well as the stability and comfort of voice that characterizes the daily routine of radio. “The Genesee Valley Penny Saver continued to provide the community a voice during the Pandemic. Each edition portrayed the struggle of businesses to survive, a hope of jobs to be filled, and a Hometown Happenings section that assured everyone of the resilience of the community to find creative ways to proceed with life in spite of restriction,” Mark noted. “Each media team was working together for the good of the community.” Discussing why she believes having a flag for the local media to be important, Mark explains, “The patron who recognized the News media appreciates the exhaustive efforts of anyone in the journalistic profession to obtain truthful and current information during this Pandemic in spite of all the political rhetoric. The ‘News’ was often a person’s only contact to the outside world, the only company for people locked in their homes. People glued themselves to these reports in hope that their county was faring better than the week before, that another local business didn’t close, that they didn’t see their best friend in the obituaries. The news became an obsession, and it was the media’s responsibility to ‘deliver,’ often at considerable risk to themselves.” The Field of Thanks was successful in the community, with many people coming to attend the closing ceremony at which every hero was recognized and given their flag and plaque. It was a refreshing site to see considering what the community had been through over the past year. Before, people could not gather and spend time with one another; now they were able come together and honor the heroes among them. Mark concluded by saying, “The Field of Thanks is giving everyone the opportunity to voice their many interesting reasons for their own definition of thankfulness. It is community thanking community.”

If something is not right with the meal, mention it early so it can be remedied. Do not eat an entire meal before filing a complaint with the server.
DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

PREVENT CO POISONING (NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions: What To Do • Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect.
A Celebration of Life for Bob Knipe, who passed to more life on Feb. 20, 2021, will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St., Batavia at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26.
• Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep. • Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home. • Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly. • Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comes from ADT—keeping your family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. As you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. * There’s been a lot of talk at my house about kitchen gadgets that do double duty, especially since I have made whipped cream for the first time -- in my coffeemaker! I have a French press that I rarely use, until now. Add heavy whipping cream and a bit of sugar to the pot, and use the screen to whip the cream by rapidly pumping it up and down. Magic! -- JoAnn * “To save money on electricity costs, hang jeans and other heavy clothing to dry first. White or light towels and garments especially love the sun. When they’re mostly dry, pop in the dryer to fluff. * “I love to eat pancakes, but I don’t have time to make them every morning. I make a very large batch on Sundays and reheat them through the week. In order to recreate that fresh-from-the-pan crisp (which you don’t get if you microwave them), I put them in my toaster.” -- P.E. in Ohio * “I use an extra coffeepot to brew a pot of hot water. I use the water for both tea and instant oatmeal packets in the morning.” -- M.S. in Nevada * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” -- K.H. in South Carolina

Rochester’s Finest Class of 2021 Announced The WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announces the CFF Rochester’s Finest Class of 2021. This year’s honorees (with place of residence and employer) are: Laurie Abbott (Silver Springs, NY); Genesee Valley Publications Benjamin Albert (Rochester, NY); Balbert Marketing LLC Emily Bennett (Penfield, NY); Paws and Claws Pet Care, Inc. Loren Blankfield (Rochester, NY); Stellar Kitchen & Bath Jack Camp (Rochester, NY); KeyBank Madison Como (Canandaigua, NY); Dixon Schwabl Kelly DeGroff (Fairport, NY); Keller Williams Realty Christy Fessler (Rochester, NY); Nazareth College Josh Frizzell (Henrietta, NY); Livingston Associates, Inc. Jen Gibson (Rochester, NY); Gallo & Iacovangelo, LLP Mayank Kakkar (Rochester, NY); Eastman Dental Allison Knauf (Brighton, NY); Monroe, Inc Reece Kreilick (Rochester, NY); Northwestern Mutual Nick Mancuso (Rochester, NY); Elevate Teresita Muniz (Pittsford, NY); CVS Pharmacy Matt Newcomb (Webster, NY); Passero Associates Kyle Palmer (Rochester, NY); Independent Financial Representative Rachel Pawlak (Rochester, NY); Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP Kevyn Rustici (Rochester, NY); ADP, Inc. Alexandra Bennett Schmidt (Hilton, NY); Constellation Brands Inc. Ryan Shekell (Honeoye Falls, NY); Arthrex Tyler White (Rochester, NY); Brite James Zobel (Rochester, NY); Doughboyzroc The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. The program runs for 16 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on October 14, 2021. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Patty Schwarzweller, AED of the WNY Chapter. When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make “CF” stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for “Cure Found”.
About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported nonprofit organization. For more information, please go to www.CFF.org. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Choose a later start time. A late-afternoon wedding may be the way to go in the summertime. The temperature usually drops a bit in the early evening, even though the sun won’t set for a couple of hours. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
