is Cat Clings too Much

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-year-old cat Ella has gotten very clingy lately. She was always fairly independent and preferred to lounge atop the sofa and watch the world outside the window. Now she refuses to do that. She runs to greet me at the door, meows nonstop until I feed her and then wants to climb into my lap the instant I sit down. She also begs to come into the bedroom and curl up at the end of the bed next to my feet. I know this sounds just darling, but it’s unusual behavior from her. What’s your advice? -- Susan W., Burlington, Vermont

DEAR SUSAN: It’s interesting that Ella’s behavior has changed so noticeably, so fast. Has anything changed in the home environment, like you have a new work schedule, or moved furniture around, or added (or lost) a human family member?

Also, has anything about Ella’s health changed? Does she have any underlying condition that might be getting worse? Check with the vet to be sure.

If neither environment nor health are the problem, you can try to enforce some rules to alter Ella’s behavior.

-- Boredom: Make sure you play with Ella more o en each day. e clingy behavior may be a request for additional attention.

-- Boundaries: Don’t change feeding times just because Ella demands it. And don’t let her into the bedroom if you don’t want her there. Keep the door shut.

-- Bribery: Well, not really bribes, but positive reinforcement. When Ella goes to her old lounging spot, reward her with praise or a treat. Don’t give her treats when she’s in your lap; instead, lead her away and give a treat to her elsewhere.

GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES

(NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up theoutdoorgrill(orindoorgrillpan, for that matter),throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a hugewowfactor, grilledsweetpotatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill.

Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example.Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Serves 3 or 4

1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges

1 ½Tbsp olive oil

1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling

Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve.

We raise Dairy Replacement Heifers, prime and choice beef steers and registered American Quarter Horses. In addition to raising livestock, we operate two feed mills. Growing Up on a Farm is Awesome as Long as Safety is a Priority

Growing up on a farm can be a great experience for children. ey grow up watching and working with their rst teachers – their parents –doing amazing things like turning miles of dirt into lush green elds of valuable crops and assisting farm animals as they give birth to another generation of genetically healthy o spring.

Farm kids aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty, and they know how to get things done. Modern agriculture involves a great deal of science and the use of technology, and today’s farm youth learns much more than most people realize. ey also learn so many critically important life skills such as cooperation, responsibility, persistence, accountability, attention to detail, patience, and the value of hard work, just to name a few.

As a parent educator, I applaud farm parents because they do one of the most important jobs every parent needs to do: they spend a lot of time with their children, teaching and mentoring them, and giving them opportunities to learn those life skills through concrete experiences. As they say, how does a child spell love? T-I-M-E.

On the ip side, not all time spent with your children is of equal value, and in some situations, there may be safety concerns that outweigh the bene ts of that time spent together. According to the 2022 US Childhood Agricultural Injuries Factsheet published by the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety, each day about 33 children are injured in agricultural related accidents and every three days a child dies from an agricultural related incident. e largest percentage of youth deaths involved driving/riding on tractors and all-terrain vehicles (47%), followed by contact with agricultural machinery (20%), and violent contact with animals or other humans (13%). Further, it is estimated that as much as 88% of agriculture related injuries and illnesses are not captured in this data because there is no centralized reporting or data collection of agricultural related injuries and fatalities.

Another NYS study focused on the age of youth that were involved in agricultural related accidents. is study revealed that 35% of the youth who were injured or died were considered too young, according to the Agricultural Youth Work Guidelines, to be engaged in the agricultural

related tasks that led to the accidents. In this study, the leading cause of injuries/death was tractor run-overs and tractor overturns, again highlighting the danger posed by tractors. Other injuries were related to loading haybales, eld work with towed implements, and feeding calves.

With these statistics in mind, farmer parents and grandparents must ask themselves if it is worth the risk to allow younger children to ride along on that tractor. How old should a child be before they are allowed to operate a tractor, gator, skid steer, or ATV alone? What other agricultural related activities may pose a risk to teens and younger children? We know that children and youths are curious, smart, and can be great helpers around the farm. But we also know that those same kids lack experience, and they can be at times inattentive and easily distracted, they like to show-o , and they believe they are invincible – these are all characteristics of youth that make them more likely to make the mistakes that result in injuries and death. Let’s make protecting our children and youths on farms this year a priority.

We still have some vegetable plants le !

We still have plenty of vegetable plants for everyone!!

We have plenty to choose from - come see us today!

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

TREE SERVICES Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features)

Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

As the temperature rises during summer, it’s crucial for seniors to stay cool and hydrated. Wear light, breathable clothing and stay in well-ventilated areas. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Opt for hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours. If you need to go outside, wear a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen. Consider using a fan or air conditioning to keep your living space cool. By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the summer months comfortably and safely.

Magic Maze BOBBY –

Did You Know? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those who have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging.

Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception.

After moving, getting acclimated to a new neighborhood and making new friends is one way to feel at home.

REAL ESTATE ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111 Page21 BATAVIA EDITION ● FRIDAY,JUNE 9,2023 R EAL E STATE S ECTION

I’ve been hearing more and more about rain gardens. What key details should I consider when installing one?

A rain garden looks like a perennial garden but has a shallow depression to collectandfilterstormwaterthatrunsoff nearby hard surfaces (roofs, driveways, walkways). Most rain gardens are a few inches deep and hold water for a day or so. Water leaving the garden may enter a storm drain system or seep into the ground where it can help renew groundwater. Plants in the rain garden slowstormwaterrunoff andhelpreduce flooding and erosion. Vegetation may remove pollutants entering waterways. A properly constructed rain garden

will hold and filter approximately 30 percent more rainfall than the same area covered by a lawn. It’s a winwin. They do take careful planning and installation to be most effective, but if you have questions or run into problems, the CCE is happy to help.

Considerations when installing a rain garden:

1. Plants in a rain garden must withstand alternating periods of wet and dry soil as well as occasional flooding. Also consider deer-resistant plants if populations are high in your area.

2.Varyplantforms,heights,andbloom

times to add diversity and interest to your rain garden.

3. Water your newly planted garden regularly for the first season or until the plants are established.

4. Keep weeds to a minimum, especially during establishment. A mulch layer will naturally suppress many weeds. Renew mulch at least once a year or as it decomposes. Composted mulch supplies nutrients

for native plants in your garden so there’s no need to add fertilizer.

5. Check water inflow and overflow areas occasionally and clear debris as necessary.

6. Over time, you may need to remove layers of silt or sediment that accumulate in the depression. At that point, you may want to divide plants that are crowded or fill gaps left by plants that failed to thrive.

DAY TRIPS SENIORS CAN ENJOY

Seaside towns: Visits to the coast make for memorable, scenic excursions. Many boast quaint shops to purchase coastal trinkets or decor. Seaside spots also may boast their share of fishing charters or sightseeing cruises, and seafood fans will appreciate what these regions have to offer in the way of dining.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the rst few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the brous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also o er surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in calories, but healthy oils can still be used without sacrificing flavor. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.

KNOCKED OUT

A knocked out tooth is considered a dentalemergency. If youhaveknocked out an adult tooth, try to put the tooth back in place and get to your dentist immediately. You can bite down on a handkerchief to keep the tooth in place. If you cannot replace the tooth, put it in a container of milk to preserve it. Time is of the essence: a tooth is more likely to reimplant in the gums the sooner it is attended to. A dentist can splint the tooth on both sides to keep it in place for two weeks while it reimplants. If you no longer have the tooth, a dentist can fill the gap with a denture, bridge,or implant.

If one or more of your teeth have been lost to damage or decay, prompt attention with various forms of dentures, implants, crowns and

bridges, or other methods of repair will prevent additional, perhaps bigger and more painful problems lateron.Visityourdentistonaregular basis, and practice good home oral hygiene. It will pay off in the long run. If you don’t have a family dentist at this time, we invite you to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre. We have convenient office hours by appointment. Call 585.343.4246.

P.S.A knocked out baby tooth should not be replaced because it can damage the adult tooth coming in behindit.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Do Companies Advertise Ineffective Supplements?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I see supplements advertised on television that are supposed to clear “brain fog” and do many other beneficial things. Are these any good, and can they actually do the things that they claim? If they are effective, why aren’t they sold at drugstores? If not, how is it that companies are allowed to make these false claims and advertise these supplements on television? -- J.L.P.

ANSWER: I believe that there are over-the-counter supplements that are effective for treating some medical conditions, and there are a few instances in which there is strong evidence of benefit, such as a vitamin and mineral formula to slow progression of macular degeneration. Very often, there isn’t enough data to be sure a supplement is either effective or ineffective.

It is certainly true that supplement companies sometimes make claims that they cannot support. By law, supplement advertising can claim to support a body part or function (which is why you see claims like “supports heart health”), but these claims must be followed by: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”

Often, the advertising for a supplement is at odds with that statement, and there are many instances of supplement manufacturers having to pay fines or change their advertising. A supplement that is found to be unsafe can be removed from the market by the FDA. In addition, any substance can be toxic if taken at a high enough dose. Vitamin A supplements are a good example.

The U.S. FDA does not regulate supplements the way they do prescription drugs, and supplement manufacturers do not need to prove that their products are effective. Further, there is strong evidence that some supplements sold in the U.S. do not contain as much (or any!) of the supplement they claim to provide. I always recommend getting a supplement that is verified by a third party, such as the U.S. Pharmacopeia or the National Science Foundation, if possible.

There are very few supplements proven to prevent problems, so I generally recommend against supplements in people who are healthy and have no symptoms. This definitely includes vitamin supplements. Supplements may have benefit in relieving symptoms for some less-serious medical conditions, and physicians should be (or get) familiar with more common supplements, their potential benefits and their toxicities.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Look for EV-friendly lodging. Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

Irresponsible Dog Owner

Dear Neighbor, You recently got a German Shepard that lives outside on a chain (I’ve got my own opinions on that but not right now.) How can you listen to your dog barking all the time at all hours of the day? Your neighbors don’t want to listen to it. On top of the barking, your dogs are frequently getting loose. They are coming onto neighboring properties and they are aggressive. When the one is chained up, it is barking and harassing us while we try to enjoy our own yard. The Chocolate Lab you keep off-leash is trying to get through and around the bad wire fence to come harass us. If you aren’t going to be good dog owners, get rid of them. Our peace and safety shouldn’t be diminished because you’re selfish, neglectful and irresponsible.

Volunteer at our food pantry

I am getting so disgusted. Myself and a couple other volunteers at our food pantry have to watch another volunteer fill his trunk week after week and bring things to his family and friends. The worst part of the whole thing is they don’t even need it. There are so many people who really need the food who come in each week and really appreciate the food we give them. These people really need the food. It is very difficult to sit here every week watching him fill his trunk. Doesn’t he have any shame?

UGH

The nice weather is finally here. We are able to open windows to let the fresh air in the house. BUT, people have to burn trash. Only way to keep the stink out is to close them back up. Can’t they smell it?

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ

Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements.

Ratherthanstatethatyouwereresponsibleforprovidingcustomerservice, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence.

If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ

Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB

Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

Think about what you can offer to prospective employers. Narrow down your specific skills and customize your résumés or cover letters to the specific talents you can offer each potential employer. Use examples that illustrate these skills from past school courses, volunteerism or part-time jobs. Your “quirks,” like being the most punctual person in your group of friends, may turn out to be the skill an employer admires the most. Consider developing a career portfolio that highlights your past achievements.
