ECOTOURISM ON THE RISE According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of local people and involves interpretation and education. Ecotourism aims to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for nature, local societies and their cultures. In a 2015 study of the travel industry by the consulting firm Deloitte, travelers expressed a heightened interest in spending on eco-friendly travel. The study also found that an overwhelming majority of business travelers (95 percent) felt that sustainability will become a defining issue for the hospitality industry in years to come. In fact, in a 2015 report titled “Travel & Tourism 2015: Connecting Global Climate Action,” the World Travel & Tourism Council reported that travelers are increasingly expecting tourism businesses to become sustainable in the same way they expect complementary Wi-Fi connectivity in hotels and online check-ins for air travel. Such information should be encouraging for environmentalists and travelers alike, as data indicates efforts to promote eco-friendly travel are proving effective and increasingly driving travelers to demand that tourism-based businesses meet their demands for travel that’s both rewarding and beneficial to the planet.

Anyone with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease, though some groups are more affected than others. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Hispanics/Latinos, Pacific Islanders, and older adults are at an elevated risk of diabetes-related vision loss or blindness. It’s also important that pregnant women with diabetes recognize the risk of eye problems. The NIDDK reports that women with diabetes can develop eye problems very quickly during pregnancy. Women who have already been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, the most commonly diagnosed diabetic eye disease, may have their condition worsen during pregnancy. The link between diabetic eye disease and pregnancy has to do with the changes a woman’s body undergoes when she is with child. The NIDDK notes that changes the body undergoes to support a growing baby can put stress on the blood vessels in the eyes. Damaged blood vessels can harm the retina, thereby increasing a woman’s risk for diabetic retinopathy. Individuals with diabetes who are at a heightened risk for diabetic eye disease, including pregnant women, can speak to their physicians about what they can do to protect their vision in the short- and long-term.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride
Attention: Ford/Lincoln/ Mercury Owners In the absence of a local Ford dealer
Dan’s Tire & Auto Service Center
Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

Protecting Honeybees Think about becoming a beekeeper yourself. There are many different resources available to help you get started.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To halve a lot of cherry tomatoes, try sandwiching them between two plastic lids. Press down lightly and slice through the opening to make short work of them. * “To remove paint or stain from hands (even oil-based), use an old dry washcloth with liquid hand soap -- no water. After the paint is loose, rinse with warm water.” -- H.P. in Washington * Quinoa is becoming really popular as a grain alternative. It’s very small and requires rinsing before cooking to remove potentially bitter residue. Here’s a great trick to rinse your quinoa without losing half of it to the holes in your colander: Use a French press coffeemaker. The fine mesh and pouring spout make rinsing a breeze. -- JoAnn * “Candle nubs, that little bit left when the candle has burned down all the way, can be removed from a candleholder by setting the whole thing in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. The wax surface hardens and shrinks, making it easier to chip out. The same goes for linens that have wax drips: freeze and chip away, then use a degreasing spot cleaner.” -- Y.G. in Arkansas

* Fun get-together project for kids: Have everyone doodle on a large posterboard. At the end of the night, trace a puzzle pattern and cut it up, making a large floor puzzle. You can bring it out at the next play date. The smaller the children, the larger the pieces! -- A.L. in Florida

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Many homeowners love wood fencing because of its versatility with regard to design and color. The options are endless when it comes to crafting wood fencing, which also can be stained in any color homeowners prefer. Wood fencing can be designed not only for homeowners who prioritize privacy, but it also can be crafted for homeowners for whom privacy is not a significant concern. Wood is a relatively inexpensive fencing material, but the maintenance required to keep wood fencing looking great can sometimes be costly and time-consuming.

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

Your fungal toenails
THE DENTAL SEAL OF APPROVAL AND ACCEPTANCE
• Are you embarrassed to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? • Now is the time to get treatment. If left untreated, fungal toenails can: affect your immune system, cause recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance! • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation and numbness to their feet can develop more serious problems. • There are also safer new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one-a-day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2023. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has been approving dental products since 1931. The ADA’s Council on Scientific Affairs awards the seal and uses a team of over 750 scientists to validate the approval. In Canada, the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) performs a similar function, with a seal of approval awarded to products through independent reviews supported by scientific evidence. This allows both organizations to validate claims of product effectiveness and benefits made by manufacturers, so consumers know they are making a purchase that will benefit their dental health. Within both the ADA and CDA, products are evaluated based on their safety, effectiveness, ingredients, labeling, package inserts, and advertising. Look for these seals on all dental-related products purchased over-the-counter.

False Positives Plague Lung Cancer Screening
309 Ellicott St., Batavia
343-0754
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small; 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans and sometimes an invasive procedure to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means your risk that this nodule is cancer is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancer is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You should also have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is current smokers who consider screening. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

Did Hiccups Lead to Guinea Pig’s Death?
PUPPY PALACE Servicing the City of Batavia
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our beloved guinea pig died suddenly this morning. I’m not sure what happened, and because there is no veterinarian near us who can treat guinea pigs, I’m searching for an answer. He developed an ear problem recently that was causing him to tilt his head, and to treat this, we were giving him Nurokind and 5 ml of water through a syringe. This morning, he started to hiccup, and an hour later he passed away. Is there any clue that you can provide as to why? -- N. Dwarakanath DEAR N.: My sincere condolences on the loss of your guinea pig. They’re such wonderful pets. When guinea pigs get sick, it can be difficult to figure out the exact treatment. Head tilt is one of those illnesses that could be an ear infection but could also be something more serious like pneumonia or another infection. I’m a little curious about using Nurokind (Mecobalamin) to treat the illness, as it is a treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency in humans. Perhaps a guinea pig owner out there can respond with the answer. Keeping your guinea pig hydrated was good, as this helps them when they’re stressed out or sick. When an illness is prolonged in guinea pigs, the stress and pain make them weaker, and they begin to experience other problems. The hiccupping is usually a sign of indigestion in healthy guinea pigs, but even for them, it’s very uncomfortable and stressful. That may have been the last straw for his system. I wish I could give you a definitive answer. Because there is no qualified vet near you, I encourage you to search online for guinea pig owner forums, as they are a very supportive and informative community.

585-548-7329 How to protect your pets from extreme heat Let dogs inside. Doghouses might not be as prevalent as they once were, but many owners still keep doghouses in their backyards so their four-legged friends have a place to relax outdoors on lazy afternoons. But doghouses can be similar to parked cars on especially hot days, making rising temperatures feel even hotter. Let dogs hang out inside in an air conditioned room on hot days to reduce their risk of heatstroke.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

REAL ESTATE SECTION ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER Change suppliers. Many partnership opportunities can be effective even if they’re less public in nature. Global supply chains were in flux during the pandemic and have yet to return to normal. That makes now a great time for local businesses to reconsider their suppliers. When doing so, look into local suppliers and let it be known that your products are locally sourced. For example, local restaurant owners can highlight the fact that their foods are sourced from local farms and manufacturers. That may impress foodies with a fondness for freshness, and also should reassure customers who want to keep as many of their dollars in the local community as possible.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

Independence Day Reflections BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many—including me! And there are few better places to celebrate July 4th than in the Finger Lakes. Fireworks, rings of fire (wherever there’s a lake!), carnivals, field days, and similar celebrations abound. Perhaps most importantly, families gather together to eat and enjoy each other’s company. This is perhaps the first truly post-pandemic year families will join together for Independence Day. As families gather, sadly, several faces may be missing. Yet, their memories will always be cherished and honored. The pleasure of once again gathering together will no longer be taken for granted as we take this opportunity to hold our loved ones close. This is also the first year several events have returned after the pandemic heights of 2020. The Covid pandemic generated more conversation around the concept—and the practical application—of freedom than there has been in some time. The tension surrounding questions of freedom made for many disagreements; resolutions for many of these questions have yet to be reached. While these decisions continue to develop, it may be a good time to reflect on what we do NOT have, rather than disagreements over what we do have. We do not, for example, have a fear of becoming civilian casualties of a war raging on American soil. The tragic conflict in Ukraine has given sharp contrast to the relative peace and security enjoyed in the United States. Surely, the value of freedom from such local devastation cannot be overstated. We also do not have restrictions on what we can learn and believe. In the United States, it is not illegal to peacefully hold and declare one’s own political, religious, moral, and
otherwise ideological persuasions. Peacefully, we are able to educate ourselves and our children as we see fit, worship if and how we see fit, and pursue any career we choose. Whether rented or owned, we, as United States citizens, do not have the fear of legally being driven out of our own homes, having our property confiscated, or having our family members harmed or stolen away. While conversations continue regarding potential changes to existing immigration legislation, it is important to recognize the guarantees of relative safety which make United States citizenship so desirable. Finally and crucially, we are free from the fear of having our families forced apart. Even the briefest glance through history, and into some countries around the world today, shows that this has not always been—and is not always—the case. Families have been divided by slavery, war, forced labor, conscription, genocide, and more. The United States hasn’t always been free of these things, but today, legally as United States citizens, we have a reasonable expectation that our families will remain together as long as we wish. For these reasons and so many more, the United States of America—with all her faults—is still something to celebrate. Our country may not be perfect, but we the people continue to have the power and freedom to improve it. That’s something to be grateful for this 4th of July—and to remember every time we have the opportunity to vote—both locally and nationally. So, happy 246th birthday, United States of America, and thank you.

DID YOU KNOW? A study from the Gap Year Association found that 77 percent of students who take a gap year do so between high school and college. Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college.
HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Revisiting Seniors-Only Grocery Shopping If you’ve been depending on grocery delivery or curbside pickup for the past two years, you might not know this: Many stores are continuing to have seniors-only hours. I’d tried going to seniors-only hours once two years ago ... but only once. The whole virus/pandemic was so new to us that we assumed that we must shop and stock up for all eventualities, leading to widespread shortages. The crowds that day were so massive that the line went across the front of the store, down the side and to the back. Store personnel were stationed at the door with counters in their hands, only allowing in a set number of shoppers. When I saw a friend coming out, I asked: “What’s it like in there?” The answer: “It’s a nightmare. People are grabbing 10 of everything. Do not go in.” And I didn’t. Recent queries among friends who use seniors-only hours indicate that things are much, much better now in terms of crowds. We know that many items are chronically out of stock. We acknowledge that COVID is still around, and we wear masks. We don’t expect much in the way of variety in our diets unless we luck onto a full shelf of food. Many of us, however, haven’t been to a seniors-only hour for a very long time, if ever. We depend on delivery and curbside pickup. If you’re ready to try seniors-only shopping, call your local grocery and retail stores. While fewer stores are now offering it, some still do. It might be every day before the regular opening, or it might be one or two very early days per week. Take your hand sanitizer and wipe down the cart handles. Wear a mask. The bonus, I’m told, is that’s when fresh vegetables and fruit are put out, and the overnight stock clerks have loaded the shelves. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. S E V RA Heroic Storm Cleanup Efforts Many thanks to the Geneseo Department of Public Works for their great work after the June 16th microburst. The storm hit at the end of the workday. Nevertheless, they stayed on the job until 1 a.m. Friday and were back at work at 6 a.m. We appreciate the hard work they do throughout the year, and they are doing a terrific job clearing up this devastation. Thanks also to the other villages’ crews who are helping.
Thank you, Matt at Strong ER Being stuck in a waiting room for hours is no fun for anyone. But then I watched waiting room ambassador Matt. He loves his job, and it shows. It’s refreshing and reassuring. He made my otherwise boring, horrible experience into a glimmer of hope. Thank you, Matt. I appreciate you, and I pray your employer recognizes the gem you truly are.
Gypsy Moth Control I’d like to address the property owners who have been having their forested areas sprayed (presumably for gypsy moths). Please be aware that, while the gypsy moth is an introduced and invasive species, this spray does not discriminate when it comes to killing all types of caterpillar larvae, including those of native butterflies and moths. These caterpillars are a vital food source to migrating as well as breeding populations of birds. Adult birds feed heavily on all types of caterpillars, and they are an important food source for nestlings as well. Although the gypsy moth larvae do defoliate trees, most deciduous trees can withstand several defoliations and still recover, as evidenced by the lush foliage this spring after defoliations last year. Gypsy moth populations go in cycles, and we are on the downward trend of this latest outbreak. So please think twice before treating your property and negatively impacting our native birds, butterflies and moths. Reviews Is this the new trend? More and more reviews are requested after purchases, quality, services, etc. When you give an honest review, you get contacted back with a not-sofriendly response: “You’re wrong, that didn’t happen, you expect too much,” etc. To practically demand all reviews be 5 star with no criticism, even though it could be good criticism, only makes their integrity worse! To deny or discourage critiques is nothing short of a disservice to your customers. Backing Out I hear you when you say you were backing out of a space at a grocery store and people just continue to walk right behind you without even looking side to side. It happens to me all the time. I question people about that and ask them why they do that and they say, “Well, I have the right away.” But why don’t they look? And as far as it being your fault, it probably will be because you’re backing out and because people have the right of way. They know this. Again, I have been in motion, and people walk quickly right behind me without looking or stopping.

Q &A with the

Master
Gardeners How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting. Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). Food reserves in the roots reach a minimum in June and then increase as food flows from the shoots to the storage roots. Consequently, shoots should be removed for the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots be-
fore they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants
are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Tweak job titles Mimic phrasing from the job listing to beat the bots and get résumés flagged for review. Slightly change job position titles so they mirror the wording used. For example, if a recruiter is looking for a “financial account manager,” and you have the experience, list your title as something like “Senior manager of new financial accounts.”

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
