CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

DID YOU KNOW?
Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

New sidewalks were poured around the caboose by Dilchers Excavating and Contracting to enhance the curb appeal. Village laborers did the grading and seeding, making it an attractive area. The Heritage Tree Program, along with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, planted trees and daffodil bulbs along the trail to create an eye-pleasing atmosphere. Jim Ehrmantraut, President of the Churchville Lions Club, donated the picnic tables that are now sitting by the caboose and at the pavilion in the village. What a great place to sit under the trees next to the caboose and have some lunch and relax! There are plenty of places to grab a bite locally to bring a picnic lunch. It’s also a great spot to enjoy the fireworks in August. Chessie Caboose certainly adds character to the village. Residents and visitors are welcome to enjoy this added piece of history in Churchville, New York, where it feels like home. Enjoy this article? DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Thanks, Livonia! A HUGE shoutout and thank you to PJ Livonia Highway Superintendent for a great cleanup job from the residents of Tuxedo Park...very much appreciated by all!
Walkers on State Routes Why you would expect people traveling at 55 mph on a busy State Route to move into the other lane so that you could walk two abreast in the road is beyond me. And to make absolutely no effort to move onto the shoulder single file in the face of oncoming traffic is unbelievable! Wake up and smell the roses before they become part of your funeral arrangement!
Medical Last week, I got very sick and called an ambulance in order to be taken a hospital. When medical people arrived and tests were done, I was informed that an ambulance would not transport me to a VA hospital as it is not considered a full working hospital. I had to have my wife run me to VA hospital...very painful. After lots of testing, I was told I had a deep vein thrombosis in my groin at the top of right leg. I would think if a person were in that much trouble, you should be rushed. My legs were three times the size of normal.
Thoughtless People Someone was cruel and thoughtless enough to steal 4 decorative rocks off a grave in [local town]. They were obviously not just rocks; they were part of the “landscaping” of the grave. They had been there for 23 years! I can’t understand how someone can be so heartless and uncaring! If you have any conscience at all, please return them! Karma!
Where did respect go? When mowing the grass, if you have neighbors and want to be respectful, the right thing to do is now three passes, blowing grass away from the neighbor's property. Come on! Please use common sense.

festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.
With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to come together even through the screen. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.

Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!
Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the game together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. WHAT HELPS FLUORIDE CLEAN TEETH? Each toothpaste ingredient serves a different purpose. Abrasives help remove food, bacteria, and stains from teeth. Humectants are used to keep toothpaste from drying out. Thickeners give toothpaste the right consistency. Even detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate are used to create foam when brushing occurs. However, the most important ingredient in toothpaste and other oral hygiene products like mouthwash is fluoride. The bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars and starches that accumulate on teeth when we eat, releasing acids that damage tooth enamel and cause a range of oral hygiene issues. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, which helps fight acid damage. It can even reverse the early stages of acid damage by remineralizing decaying teeth.
approach to addressing our patients’ dental needs includes educating them on effectively avoiding future problems, thus promoting optimal oral hygiene. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of personalized care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We have office hours by appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. Even if you drink fluoridated water, it is still necessary to use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste increases concentrations of fluoride in teeth, even in areas with a high level of fluoride in the drinking water.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Osteoporosis Treatment Could Put Jaw at Risk health except for a diagnosis of osteopenia. My primary care doctor has prescribed medication for my osteopenia. I have periodontal disease and have been advised by my periodontal specialist not to take medication for osteopenia due to deterioration of the jawbone. I think I am in a loselose situation. I spoke to my internal medicine doctor, and he said he was concerned about a hip fracture if I don’t take the osteopenia medication. I don’t want to take a chance on the jaw deteriorating. Please give me your opinion on the best course of action. -- G.M. ANSWER: Osteopenia, also called low bone density, is a risk factor for osteoporosis. The risk of developing a fracture depends on a person’s age and sex, height and weight, results of their bone density test and presence of certain other medical risk factors, including previous fracture, use of glucocorticoid drugs like prednisone, smoking and rheumatoid arthritis. Fracture risk is commonly estimated by the FRAX tool (www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX/). If the estimated hip fracture risk is 3%, or the combined risk of any fracture is 20%, then medication treatment is usually recommended. Getting your FRAX result is a critical number to have to help make an informed decision. You will need the exact results of your bone density. If your risk is not so high that medication is recommended, there are many things you can do to help your bone density. These include adequate dietary calcium, supplemental vitamin D, regular exercise -- especially weight-bearing and strengthening exercises -- and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol. A home evaluation to reduce fall risk may be of benefit. If your fracture risk is already higher than the above threshold, medication would normally be prescribed in addition to lifestyle treatments. Antiresorptive treatments, such as alendronate (Fosamax) or other bisphosphonate drugs, do increase the risk for jawbone damage, and given what your periodontist has recommended, I would avoid not only these drugs but also denosumab (Prolia), which works similarly by decreasing bone resorption. Although I am not an expert, I would consider treatment with a medicine like teriparatide, which has been used as a treatment for people with jaw osteonecrosis. This medicine works by stimulating bone growth and has a good safety record. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

585-335-7902 Honeybees flitting from flower to flower is one of the first signs that warm weather has arrived. Honeybees are a welcome presence in the garden, pollenating plants and contributing to local honey supplies. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, honeybees are in grave danger. In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama created a task force comprised of various agencies to address the growing issue of rapidly diminishing honeybees and other pollinating insects. This initiative was a response to reports from American beekeepers indicating hive deaths have been on the rise, gravely affecting the honeybee population. Honeybees pollinate many fruit trees, nut plants and vegetables, playing a crucial role for many nations’ food industries. In addition to government involvement and honeybee conservation methods designed by environmental agencies, there are many things that regular citizens and homeowners can do to protect honeybees this summer.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the 1880s, businessman LaMarcus Thompson was so upset over the temptations presented by saloons and brothels that he decided to clean up what he viewed as one of America’s most immoral places—New York’s Coney Island. To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Choose the right date and time Plan when to hold the sale by looking at the calendar and choosing an open weekend. Many people host their yard sales on Friday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, theorizing that this is when the most people will be free to browse their wares. Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Don’t Disregard AARP
Starting when we reach age 50, our mailbox becomes flooded with frequent invitations to join AARP. At that age, we don’t want to hear about anything for seniors because, in our eyes, we aren’t seniors yet. We don’t even qualify for a senior discount at local stores. So maybe we don’t even look at the piles of literature and ads AARP sends. But maybe we should. There’s more to AARP than meets the eye. For a mere $16 per year, we get a whole list of benefits and information. The discounts themselves are impressive, in over a dozen categories. Want to send flowers or a gourmet fruit basket? Get a 20% discount. Traveling and need a rental car? Get a 30% discount. Save on RV insurance, prescriptions at Walmart, restaurants, hearing aids (20%), Ancestry.com (30%), Norton computer security (25%) and much more. There is a jobs board (315 jobs in my ZIP code alone), an auto-buying program to help with dealer pricing, online games, local chapters and podcasts, a government watch ... everything designed to help seniors. And then there is the AARP Bulletin monthly magazine that is sent by mail to members. If there’s one thing you don’t want to leave lying around unread, it’s this. I just picked up a recent copy and discovered three must-read articles: Identifying phone scams when you get a call, cutting the cost of online groceries and, most important of all, an article on drug interactions. Imagine my surprise to see two of my drugs listed with information about contraindications no one ever told me about. And what do they do with our membership fees? They advocate for us all over the country, especially with Social Security and Medicare. If you’re not signed up for AARP, it’s something you should consider. If in doubt, go to www.aarp.org and scroll down the page to see what’s new. If you have questions, call AARP at 888-687-2277 (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST) (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

SUMMER FUN FOR ACTIVE SENIORS
Washington Towers
Visit a fair or farmer’s market. The warm weather months are a peak time for outdoor activities, including various community fairs and farmer’s markets. Chances are you can find a farmer’s market nearby most days of the week, but especially on the weekend. A town market or state fair is a great way to get out and walk, play games of chance or enjoy some live entertainment. Check your community calendar for local events.

Once we have the right plant in the right place planting begins with digging a hole twice as large as the root ball of the plant and to a depth that will be just deep enough to allow the current soil level in the pot or if it is bare root to the level of the root flare or collar. Therefore I suggested leaving the soil slightly below the root flare when backfilling. How do you tell when a lilac bush is dead? When there are no visible green or healthy buds, when the branches break rather than flexing when bent, and when no leaves begin to grow. These are all indications the plant likely is dead.

EXPLAINING PRECISION AGRICULTURE What are some examples of PA technology? Sensors are a prime example of PA technology that helps make farms more efficient and productive. Sensors serve various functions by helping farmers gather data on the availability of water in soil, the level of compaction in soil, leaf temperature, insect and disease infestation, and other areas. Weather modeling is another component of PA that can help farms be more costeffective and efficient. Whereas in years past many farms would need to manually assess certain variables to determine when to harvest, weather modeling technology has enabled some farmers to generate remote readings, saving time and money.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY
Stay Cool with Cook! FREE Ten Year Warranty on parts AND LABOR!
(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years.
We offer FINANCING 12 months SAC for qualified customers
“Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.
LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER (NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course. As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day. Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association: • Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t. • 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf.
Seasoned Firewood For Sale
• Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers. • Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.)

It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice:
With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time! ●

DID YOU KNOW? Dogs are wildly popular pets. The American Pet Products Association says there are 63.4 million households in the United States that have a dog, and with the exception of 2002 and 2015, that number has steadily risen since 2000. Certain breeds remain especially popular among dog owners. In August 2021, the pet insurance provider Trupanion released the most popular dog breeds of 2020, and the top five breeds were: 1. Labrador retriever 2. Golden retriever 3. Goldendoodle 4. German shepherd 5. Labradoodle
THE IMPACT
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Got lots of fresh herbs from your summer garden? Hang bunches upside down in a cool place for a week or so. Crumble the leaves into small jars. You’ve made your own dried herbs. * “Want super-crunchy fries at home? Soak potato pieces in very cold water for an hour (fridge is best, or add ice often); dry and fry. Drain fries well, dust LIGHTLY with flour and quickfry one more time for only a minute or so.” -- T.C. in Idaho * If you want to cool your canned drinks quickly, add water to the cooler with a lot of ice, submerge all drinks under the ice line, and wait about 20 minutes. Without the water, it takes much longer. The water extends the surface contact of the ice. * To keep your ladder from sinking into soft sand or dirt, put each leg into a can or bucket. It creates a much larger surface area, thereby stabilizing the legs. * If you run out of bleach, add 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to a small load of white laundry. * Be certain to use only distilled water in your iron. The water from the tap can leave mineral stains on clothing, and will kill your iron if you do it all the time. -- R.E. in Louisiana GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES. Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review. Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Page 30
Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

Extreme heat can be dangerous to pets, who often suffer in silence when dealing with the consequences of extreme heat. Pet owners who take certain precautions and learn to recognize signs of a pet struggling with heat can better protect their animals from succumbing to rising temperatures.

FOUND! Pristine and Stunning! PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a new neighbor with a big dog moved into one of the apartments next door. Since then, every morning there’s a fresh deposit of dog poo on my front lawn. And not on the edge -- right in the middle of the lawn. Because it happens before sunrise each day, I suspect the new neighbor is letting their dog out, unleashed and unsupervised, to do its business wherever it pleases. How should I deal with this problem? I don’t have clear proof that it’s the new neighbor, but it sure smells like it. -- Disgusted in Dallas
14 Wilson Street, LeRoy 1,600 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, 2 bath Ranch. Custom-built and designed in 2000 by Whitney East. Open floor plan–spacious throughout, super functional kitchen. Living room and dining room have cathedral ceilings. Primary bedroom with its own bathroom, incredible walk-in closets, 1st floor laundry, abundance of high end features. Large basement offers countless opportunities. Extra large 2 car garage. Private yard. Meticulously cared for home in a much sought after location. Completely handicap accessible. Nothing for you to do but move in!
Dear Disgusted: I’m with you. Owners need to be responsible for their pets, and they need to be good neighbors by keeping their dogs on a leash and picking up after them.

cell: 585-314-7982 crocker@rochester.rr.com 7133 W. Main Rd., LeRoy, NY 14482 • 585-502-5250 MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 16, 1863, the draft riots enter their fourth day in New York City in response to the Enrollment Act. Although avoiding military service became much more difficult, wealthier citizens could still pay a $300 fee to stay home.
There are a couple of ways to discover the culprit. The low-cost way is to wake up well before dawn and watch your front lawn. Snap a photo of the dog when it comes onto your property, but don’t try to shoo it away -- you’re gathering evidence. The high-cost way is to install a security camera with a motion sensor. Aim it so that it has a good view of your property but not other yards (it’s a privacy issue). Set it to record when the motion sensor is triggered. With or without proof, contact the property manager of the apartment building. Calmly explain the situation and your suspicions, and ask them to remind residents in writing about leash laws. Most property managers have a vested interest in keeping the neighbors happy and will cooperate to solve the problem. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. Snooping Out a Mystery Pooper
HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
REAL ESTATE SECTION
Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

or RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
LPN Nurses Needed for Home Care
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.
