I always have great rhubarb. I take good care of it. This year it won’t fill out. It’s mostly tall & spindly. Could it be this bad spring? -Ed S. The most likely reason why your rhubarb is tall and spindly is that it is overcrowded and needs to be divided. It should be divided after about 5 years of growth. The best time to divide is in the early spring, but it can be done in the fall. Dig around the root clump and lift the entire plant. Cut down through the crown between buds, with each division having at least one bud and prefer-

Plant at same depth as the original plant was growing. Another possibility is that due to the very wet spring, if your drainage is poor, your rhubarb may be experiencing crown rot. It damages terminal buds and results in spindly, weak stems. The plant will eventually collapse.
Can peonies be divided, or should they be moved as a whole plant? – Donna Y.
Palmiter’s Garden Nursery in Avon specializes in peonies and can provide information and advice about these beautiful plants.
Peonies really do not like to have their roots disturbed, but if you must move of divide them, the best time to do so is in the fall – September or October. Once divided or moved, they may take two or three years to settle in before they bloom again.

Grilling season has arrived, and amateur grillmasters everywhere are gearing up for another summer of backyard barbecues and family dinners outside under the summer sun. But once you fire up that grill and cook your first hot dog of the season, your work is not quite done. Cleaning the grill after you have eaten makes it easier to prolong the life of your grill and ensure the foods you eat are safe to consume.

WE STAND. WE DON’T KNEEL.
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away.
OAKFIELD Oakfield Summer Lunch Program: Oakfield Alabama CSD will sponsor a Summer Meals Program for all children 3 to 18 years of age. It will be held at Elroy D. Parkins Town Park from July 8th through August 9th, 2019. Located at 3319 Drake St. Rd., Oakfield. Meals will be served from 11:45 am to 12:20 pm, Monday through Friday. Please register with the Town Park. http:// oahornets.org.
4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3
STAFFORD The Le Roy Stafford Senior Citizens meet on the third Wednesday of the month March through December. We meet in the Knights of Columbus hall on West Main St. in Le Roy, behind Save-A-Lot. Bring a generous dish to pass, per person, or pay $4.00 for a lovely varietal meal. Please bring your own place setting and preferred beverage. Coffee, tea, dessert and condiments are provided. Dinner is served promptly at 6:00pm. A program immediately follows dinner. The program for the July 17th dinner will be Art of Mandy. If you have any questions, please contact Rosemary Miller @ 506-5233 or Sharon Frost @ 768-6846. The Le Roy Stafford Senior Citizens have a trip planned for July 23, 2019. The round trip ticket to Watkins Glen includes motor coach transportation, a Luncheon Cruise on Seneca Lake with entertainment by “Love That Country Music.” The final stop is for a visit to the wonderful Sauder’s Market in Seneca Falls. The per person cost is $80.00. Make your reservations as soon as possible by contacting Rosemary Miller at 506-5233. Payment is due by July the 9th. Join us for a day of fun and entertainment.
• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov.

(NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.

Myth #4: You have to book far in advance. There is no set time frame for booking a rental home before your trip. While booking further in advance can give you a greater selection to choose from, there are often great last-minute deals in many popular vacation destinations for those who can’t plan as far ahead.

Myth #2: I need to have a large group. Vacation rental homes come in all shapes and sizes, from studio units and condos in resort-style communities to larger, private homes with four or more bedrooms. Solo travelers, couples and families alike can enjoy rental homes for the convenience and can find the rightsized home for their needs. Myth #3: I have to stay for at least a week. Many vacation rental homes offer flexibility when it comes to length of stay. Travelers can often find rentals for weekend stays, especially during off-peak travel periods.
Where is your will? Robert Friedman
(NAPSI)—Vacation rental homes are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, 89 percent of travelers who have never rented a vacation home before would consider it, according to a recent study. However, popular misconceptions prevent some people from doing so. Here are a few facts that can help. Myth #1: More space = a higher price tag. Many travelers assume vacation rentals are more expensive than traditional lodging. Think again: When you break down the price per night and per room compared to traditional accommodations, vacation rentals typically offer better value—plus, you get added living areas. Rental homes can also prove more cost effective when you average in all the convenient amenities, such as kitchens to save money on meals, or washers and dryers to cut down on baggage fees because you can pack less.
Maximum income for eligibility: 1 person $38,100 • 2 people $43,550 Come visit, tour and see for yourself
Setting The Record Straight: Common Myths About Vacation Rentals
Myth #5: If I need help, I’m on my own. This one depends on how you book your rental home. If you book directly with a homeowner through a listing site, you will have to work out any issues directly with the owner. However, if you book through a professional manager, such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals, there is someone available 24/7 to assist you and to serve as a liaison between you and the property owner. Wyndham even offers a “Vacation Rental Bill of Rights” that assures travelers that their expectations will be met. Learn more about vacation rentals at www.VacationDifferently. com. The travel resource offers great tips on family travel, ideas for vacation rental accommodations, and inspiration on a different way to travel.

CROSSWORD
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 8, 1951, Paris, the capital city of France, celebrates turning 2,000 years old. However, the City of Lights was most likely founded around 250 B.C., when a Gallic tribe known as the Parisii settled an island (Ile de la Cite) in the Seine River, which runs through present-day Paris. * On July 9, 1962, Bob Dylan records "Blowin' in the Wind," although it wouldn't be released for another year. The most well-known version was done by Peter, Paul and Mary, which became a hit. * On July 10, 1985, in Auckland harbor in New Zealand, Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior sinks after French agents in diving gear plant a bomb on the ship's hull. Although French authorities denied responsibility, a British newspaper later uncovered evidence of French President Francois Mitterrand's authorization of the bombing plan.

Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

deodorant and change my shirts daily. I use mostly cotton shirts and undershirts. I launder my shirts with soap mixed with bicarbonate sodium (baking soda) to eliminate odor. In spite of all this, deodorants seem to work for few hours and then fade away. What other solutions do you have for this problem, whether it’s what to use for the underarm or what to wash the clothes with? Thanks. -- N.I. ANSWER: Body odor comes mainly from bacteria that grow in the moist areas, like axillae (armpits). Keeping them dry and minimizing bacteria are then the ways to minimize body odor. Antiperspirant, rather than deodorant, is effective at keeping the axillae dryer. Applying at nighttime after shower or bath may be more effective. Occasional use of a topical antibiotic to the axillae can keep bacteria growth down as well. Diet can have a role, too. Sulfur-containing foods like garlic, along with onions and many curries, can cause a strong odor. As far as washing clothes, most detergents do a very good job of removing the odor-causing bacteria. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she took my blood tests in the laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt on a daily basis? I was eating a whole avocado in the a.m. for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please describe potassium and its job, and advise what I should do. -A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. However, most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Does sunlight make chickenpox blisters appear more quickly? -- S.V.A.
ANSWER: I have heard that, too, but can’t find any evidence that it’s true. The rash of chickenpox certainly will come, even in darkness. Sunlight can worsen scarring from chickenpox, and the affected skin is more susceptible to burning, so those with chickenpox rash should be kept out of the sun. Chickenpox is also very contagious; restrict contact with anyone who hasn’t had it or the vaccine. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ZERO IN ON XEROSTOMIA The condition called “dry mouth” is a symptom that occurs when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to prevent the mouth from drying out. Also known as “xerostomia,” dry mouth is no small matter since saliva not only limits the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, but also bathes the teeth in minerals that can help early-stage cavities to “remineralize” (or heal). Xerostomia can also promote halitosis, cracking of the lips, increased plaque accumulation, tongue ulcers, and other complications. Drinking plenty of water can help keep the oral environment moist during limited use of mouth-drying medication. Long-term use of medications such as anti-depressants and those for high blood pressure is likely to require medication to increase saliva production.
No matter what your oral concerns may be, we want you to be comfortable coming to our office. We try to make all our patients’ visits as relaxing as possible. If you are hesitant about visiting the dentist, for dry mouth, cosmetic matters, or other oral issues, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, where You Will Have A Positive Experience! For full-service, patientfriendly dental care in a comfortable atmosphere, make an appointment today at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. The dentist may prescribe pilocarpine (Salagen) or cevimeline (Evoxac) to stimulate the production of saliva when treating dry mouth.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Thank you to the good Samaritan who left a note on our SUV on 6/5 in Wegmans parking lot about the nail in our tire. We do not know who you are, so we cannot thank you personally, but it was very much appreciated. We were able to get it fixed that day and not get a surprise later. So again, thank you! A particular weed and grass killer contains [a chemical] which is said to be carcinogenic to humans. Why is there not a ban on spraying it? After six years of exposure to this chemical, there could be significant factors affecting one’s health. So, why does the landlord keep spraying this chemical around the well? This well is used by the renters daily for everyday needs. What about liability?
My two daughters were outside with their pet rabbit. They were walking outside near the deck when a dog started barking, and a few minutes later, another woman came over to the woman with the dog and asked her if everything was okay. She said everything GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Teresa House staff and Board of Directors would like to send a note of special thanks to all our wonderful volunteers. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with us! Whether you help with caregiving, cleaning, fundraising, organizing, Wish List shopping, special projects around the House or multiple things all at once - we want you to know that we couldn’t do it without your help. We rely on our volunteers every day and we want you ALL to know how very much you are appreciated. You are all angels in our eyes. Thank you for being a gift to our community each and every day!
When I realized my low tire pressure warning light was on, I drove over to Chip’s on Lake Rd. Chip and Jason pulled a roofing nail out of my tire, put a plug in and wouldn’t accept any payment. Thank you for your fantastic hometown service! I really appreciate it!! Your shop has all my business!
was fine, but the other women asked her why the dog was barking, and she said it was because the dog was nervous because of the two girls standing there. My daughters were not yelling or talking loudly or running around, they were just calmly walking around with the rabbit. The woman had no right to yell at them, telling them to leave. They were not disturbing anyone. If you want the dog to be quiet then take him away from the window so he doesn’t get “nervous” at two girls walking around.

Last Friday, I was at Walmart to purchase a heating pad and was getting into the car while my son returned the wheelchair. Things went bad at that time, and I landed on the ground on my back. A friendly family heard me yelling for help and came to my rescue. A huge thank you to this family who helped me, and God Bless you! ~ Aletha
Thank you, Christine and Lisa, for the flowers at the Lima Town Hall and at the 4-corners. They are beautiful!
So-called climate change sounds like some quasiscience in order to drum up more money. Seasonal change is really what it is. It happens all the time, and the Earth will survive. It has for millions of years, anyway. What is making more negative ‘climate change’ are the oodles of wind and solar farms. Nature has survived for eons without solar farms and wind farms, which do not help the problem at all and make it worse. A moratorium should be put in place to stop them from being built.

On Friday, June 14th in the Batavia Kmart parking lot a good Samaritan found an envelope/utility bill payment I had dropped on the ground getting out of my car. They took time out of their day to bring it back to my home. Thank you so much. I appreciate your kindness.
If you love nature, let nature shine; don’t ruin it with ugly structures. I was surprised to see that vitriolic rant entitled, “Be a Mother,” about the widow of two years. Whoever wrote that is so judgmental and lacking in compassion. I’m sure they think of themselves as a caring Christian. Haven’t they heard “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone?” It has to be tough enough to be a young widow without some nosy neighbor second guessing every parenting decision you make. Shame on whoever wrote that.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Keep a well-manicured lawn. Well-manicured lawns are less likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Because water plays such a crucial role in the mosquito breeding process, it’s necessary that all potential water sources in a yard be removed. Fallen leaves that are not removed and pockets of soil beneath trees and plants can collect rain water or water from lawn sprinklers, which can be just enough for mosquitoes to breed.

THE BIBLE SAYS “Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” ( Jonah 1:17) “When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.” ( Jonah 2:7,10) “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40) “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (I Corinthians 15:3,4)

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MOBILE PET GROOMING SERVICE
SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know -- or even just met -- feel important and welcome in your life. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS Makes 10 to 12 skewers Basting Sauce (optional) 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup mirin 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces 1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil Salt (optional) Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill. Serve the skewers piping hot. EMPLOYMENT

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

CLASS B DELIVERY DRIVER IVER
TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.
For a busy building supply company. Reasonably clean license CDL-B. Benefits included. Apply at Armor Building Supply 653 Ellicott Street Batavia, NY 14020 OR submit resume online @ applyforjobsnow@hotmail.com
For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.
CNAs & LPNs FT & PT CNAs, 3-11 & 11-7; up to $2,000 sign-on bonus and new start rate. Per Diem CNAs, all shifts, with new per diem rate of $14/hr. FT & PT LPNs, 3-11 & 11-7; up to $5,000 sign-on bonus. Apply: Premier Genesee Center 278 Bank St., Batavia, 14020 or email: kferrando@premiergenesee.com
“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before.
