DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
* If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bathmat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support, and your hands will not slide. *Before frosting a cake, brush both layers with apricot nectar. This will secure any crumbs and provide a smooth surface. -- L.H. in Illinois * For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. * If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. * For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in oven for a sturdier skin. Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven. Baking time can be cut in half! -- J.L. in Florida * Remove that musty smell from stored clothes by adding either vinegar or ammonia to the wash water. Be sure to check for smell removal BEFORE drying, as the dryer can bake the smell into clothes, making it more difficult to remove. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

2ND ANNUAL SUMMER BASH
at Farmer’s Creekside a Huge Success! BY AMANDA DUDEK As rays from the descending sun danced on the nearby banks of the Oatka, the 2nd annual Summer Bash was just getting into full swing. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn in LeRoy once again hosted this funfilled celebration to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY (CFF). Genesee Valley Publications staff were joined by several friends, family members, and advertising partners to help make this event even bigger than it was last year.
The Summer Bash was indeed a terrific success. Not only did this stunning local eatery provide the perfect atmosphere for celebration, but they also went above and beyond in their generosity. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn donated three huge gift baskets to our silent auction which garnered over $600 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY. On behalf of GVP and CFF, we would like to thank Creekside for donating so much in support of such a worthy cause!
The Summer Bash was open to the public, and guests gathered along the tavern’s creek level patio, enjoying the outdoor bar and moving to the live music—thanks to Encore Events—flowing from the outdoor stage. On this patio as well as on one of its deck areas, guests strolled between vendors for select wine, brews, and spirits tastings.
Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. CFF funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices.
Sarah Christ and Kara Ivison of Home magazine produced by Genesee Valley Publications (GVP), joined Sarah Farmer and Maria Valencia of Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn to make this possible. These vendors brought some of their finest and most popular selections. All were enthusiastic and gracious as they shared their specialties. Among these were such vendors as Thin Man Brewery, Opici Wine & Spirits, Ziobaffa Wine, Blue Nectar, Lockhouse Distillery, Ravines Wine Cellars, Rohrbach Brewing Co., Hercules Mulligan, Black Button Distilling, Genesee Brewery, BeerPass, Deep Eddy Vodka, Monsieur Touton, Norwhey Nordic Seltzers, and Iron Smoke Distillery.
Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond! For more information about CFF and to purchase tickets for its end-of-the-year fundraising celebration at La Luna High Falls, visit https://finest.cff.org/Rochester.
Creekside itself offered a specially curated menu for the celebration, including select wines and brews, specialty cocktails, and delectable dishes such as its watermelon salad and its chicken French dip sandwich, not to mention mouthwatering hand-cut fries. As always, every possible item was made from scratch, right down to some of the simple syrups in the cocktails. Guests could simply could not get enough! “The Summer Bash at Creekside was awesome!” said guest and LeRoy resident Chuck Flynn. “The food, friends, food, music, & drink were superb! If you missed it, put it on your calendar next year, like, right now.” The Summer Bash was also part of GVP’s MacKenzie McGrain’s efforts as one of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Rochester’s Finest. “I would like to thank everyone who participated in the silent auction to help raise over $2,000 in funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” said McGrain. “I am so grateful to my mentor, Christine White, for nominating me as one of Rochester’s Finest honorees this year, as well as to Patty Schwarzweller the director of CFF of Western New York. I would like to also thank Laurie Abbott, Sarah Christ, and Kara Ivison for guiding me to success before, during, and after the event. I am honored to be a part of such an amazing foundation.” Thank you to Carla Coots from Insight Photo for capturing our event!

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn. Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE Economics: The effects of climate change on crops and livestock may force farmers to change the nature of their farms. The UCS notes that farmers may be forced to choose crop varieties and animal breeds that are suited to the new conditions sparked by climate change. Going in a new direction could force farmers to make potentially costly investments in machinery and other changes as they make the transition.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Seriously? There is a noise ordinance in town. Next time you feel the need to rev up late at night, the Sheriff will be called.

What is wrong with people? I help a neighbor who runs a consignment shop outside of [local town]. It has clothing bins for donations of clothing and shoes outside in her parking lot. People keep leaving items like glassware, children’s toys, old furniture, etc. The truck only picks up the clothing donations in the bins. The store owner must then pay to dispose of all the stuff people leave there. We even left a note out there asking people to please donate [those items] elsewhere or to put it at the end of their own driveway with a “free” sign. If it’s junk, please dispose of it yourself. It has been costly for the shop owner, who runs a small business, and hurtful (to say the least) to find a new pile of stuff there every week!
Great Job! Great job to the crews, RG&E, Frontier, Spectrum and the multiple tree service companies and anyone else for cleaning up the mess after the big storm. They worked nonstop, and I appreciate it. Thanks! The Gnomes did it! We have a back shade garden in our yard. There are gnome houses, and gnomes running rampant through the garden. Someone added to our Gnome Village. Thank you to whoever installed the three little gnomes to Summers Street. They are a great addition! Very thoughtful of you!
Time to End This is a touchy subject, but I’ll say it anyways. When will we start considering impeachment of all our leaders in Washington? I’m not taking sides in politics, but at what point do we all realize what’s happening across America? If I don’t do my job at work, I get fired. I see no difference here.
Thank you, Minnehan's Restaurant! A huge "thank you" to Tim Minnehan and Minnehan's Restaurant for providing every camp participant in the Livingston County Baseball/Softball Camp with free ice cream and Mini Golf! Thanks, James! I visited the Burger King in Geneseo the other day and had the pleasure of being served by James. He was very patient with me while I made my decision. His friendliness and excellent customer service towards me and the other customers in the restaurant was refreshing. James, you are a gem!

Cuff Location Matters for BP Reading ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always read that when you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right that the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous).

AVOIDING AN ABSCESSED TOOTH A tooth abscess is a swollen pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection in the tooth’s root. An abscess can occur at the bottom of the root or in the gums to the side of the root. Bacteria enters the root through an untreated cavity, chip, or crack in the tooth, causing swelling and inflammation. An abscess requires treatment and won’t resolve on its own. A dentist will drain the abscess and treat the infection. A root canal or tooth extraction may also be required. The best way to avoid a tooth abscess is to prevent tooth decay through daily brushing and flossing, healthy eating habits that limit sugar and snacks, and regular cleanings by a dental professional.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK Be cautious of hepatitis C: Individuals should avoid behaviors that put them at risk of contracting hepatitis C, which causes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis C can be contracted by receiving a piercing or tattoo in an unsanitary environment, through injecting or inhaling illicit drugs, through unsafe sex, or if you are a healthcare worker exposed to infected blood through an accidental needle prick.

www.cedarstreetonline.com
Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
High temperatures and kittens don’t mix DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I live in hot, humid Florida and have the opportunity to adopt two kittens. My home has no air conditioning -- only ceiling and floor fans. When I return home during the summer, the indoor temperature can reach 95 degrees with high humidity. Can a kitten handle such high indoor temperatures and high humidity for nine hours a day? If there is any possibility of harm, I will not obtain the kittens. -- Ann T., via email DEAR ANN: If there’s doubt in your mind, you already know the answer. I commend you for thinking of the welfare of the kittens first. Now, I’ll tell you a similar story. During my first years out of college, I rented a small apartment in sunny, humid Orlando that had no air conditioning either. However, the first thing I purchased was a window unit air conditioner. Not for me, but for my cat. It was a significant expense, and it boosted my electric bill dramatically, but I didn’t think twice about it. Pets rely on us to keep them safe, fed and comfortable. An indoor cat doesn’t have control over the temperature and humidity in the home. As the temperature rises, they have few options to cool off -- no breezy, shady spots to lounge in, not much fresh air. At 95 degrees, even with a full bowl of water nearby, pets can suffer a heat injury. Kittens are even more vulnerable. If you’d like to adopt the kittens, first work out a way to keep your home’s temperature below 80 degrees. Pets are an investment in happiness. Their comfort and safety are part of that investment. Thank you again for thinking of the kittens’ safety. Send your questions to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

COMMON TERMS FOUND ON FOOD LABELS Sodium: Otherwise known as salt, sodium is necessary to maintain nerve and muscle health. However, many people consume too much sodium, oftentimes because of processed foods. WebMD notes that sodium intake should be limited to 2,300 milligrams or less per day. Certain people, such as those over the age of 51, African Americans or those with certain conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Study: the Second Half of Our Lives Sometimes the results of research and studies are suspect if we don’t trust the sources, but AARP and National Geographic recently published a joint study on the realities of the second half of life, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Their study covered the big topics as we age: health, relationships, financial security, housing, independent living, end of life, retirement and more. Here are some highlights: • We care most about our brain health, our independence and our relationships, in that order, as we move into our 70s. By the time we reach our 80s, it’s relationships that spike to the top of our list of concerns. • Guess what plunges by the time we reach our 70s? Work, and it’s no surprise. We’ve been there and done that, and the idea of climbing the ladder of success at work no longer appeals to us. • Health is a curious category, but it makes sense once you think about it. It seems that those who are the healthiest are the ones who are most concerned about their health, likely because they’d like to stay that way and remain active. They’re into walking and exercising and taking flu shots, whereas the ones who have a serious medical condition are less concerned, perhaps having accepted the reality of less-than-stellar health. But age plays a part in that: We’re most concerned about health in our 60s, much less concerned in our 70s, and very concerned again in our 80s, mostly about stamina, strength and flexibility. There’s something to be said for picking a form of exercise and sticking with it, especially if it helps with those three concerns. At the end of the day, the older we get, the more we care about meaningful relationships. As AARP noted, “Friends, family and community are the hallmarks of finding happiness. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 12, 1979, disco music died at Chicago’s Comiskey Park when a “Disco Demolition” night is held. Organizers grossly underestimated the number of fans who would want to blow up their disco records: a sellout crowd inside the stadium and 40,000 outside who stormed the field and lit bonfires on the diamond.

Gardeners Decades ago, a family member told us to plant English Ivy in the beds next to our fence in the back yard. Thirty years later it’s now taking over. What method do you recommend to stop it? Cutting it and pulling it out isn’t feasible. Thank you! It can be challenging, some might ask what harm it is in taking over as doesn’t require a mower. But, if you want to remove any unwanted plants the best way that I have found is using Lasagna Mulching. Lasagna gardening, also known as sheet mulching is a no-till no-dig gardening method that turns materials like kitchen waste, straw, and newspapers into rich, healthy compost. Everything you
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County use is pretty much the same things you would use to compost. Now you are just adding them directly to form an organic garden bed, and you don’t have to move compost. It’s already there! You can start making your lasagna garden any time of the year, but you can layer it up in the fall as you are putting your beds to bed, cover it up with plastic, and when it comes time to take off the plastic, you have great new compost and plant on that! To get started, cardboard or newspaper make an excellent bottom layer because they will smother grass and weeds. Water this bottom layer to hold it in place and
encourage decomposition. Then add a 2-inch layer of a carbon-rich “brown” material on top of the cardboard or newspaper layer, such as leaves, straw, black and white newspaper, sawdust, tea bags, or wood ash. Then add a 2-inch layer of nitrogen-rich” green” material such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps from fruits and vegetables, well-rotted horse or cow manure, coffee grounds, or plant cuttings without seeds. Garden
debris that contains weed seeds or diseased materials should not be used. Alternate layers of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich material until the mulch reaches approximately 3 feet. You don’t need to turn the pile. - Sandy Vanno Master Gardener Warren County CC

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
