Gardeners I discovered some strange fungi under a tree in my yard. It has small tan mounds that erupt into long narrow red spearlike structures. Can you tell me anything about it? - Jane The fungus you encountered might be a stinkhorn, as described in this article: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/wakullaco/2019/01/08/the-elegant-stinkhorn-mutinus-elegans/ Without a photo, a definite ID isn’t possible. These fungal structures do not damage plants. Rather, they grow on decaying plant matter. Web search “Stinkhorn” for variations.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time.

Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. - Joanne Joanne, I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out, but common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground and is difficult to remove.

milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens: Common field milkweed (Asclepius they are more attractive and will not Syriaca), serves as both a preferred spread invasively like common milkhost plant (where these butterflies weed. lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars The article from the University of feed) and a nectar source for adults. Vermont at the following link offers That’s why people encourage grow- many details about monarchs and ing this specific plant. THE BIBLE SAYS “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;” (II Thessalonians 1:8,9) “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.” (I Thessalonians 5:5) “So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” (I Thessa-lonians 1:7, 10) “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” (Philippiians 3:5,9)

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Dealing with a difficult person can be the kind of challenge you Aries Lambs love. Or it could be an energy-draining exercise in futility. Be certain your goals are worth your efforts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Divine Bovine might be seeing red at having your crisis-resolution efforts overlooked. But others know the truth, and they can be expected to step forward when the time comes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be well on your way to finally making that important decision. Having the support of loved ones will help when crunch time comes. Keep a positive attitude. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling uneasy about a move might not mean you’re having a case of Cancerian wavering. It could be your inner sense is warning you to reassess your situation before taking action. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your pride could get in the way of admitting you might have erred. Best to ‘fess up now before a small mistake turns into a big misunderstanding. Make the weekend a special family time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to please someone with a less-than-glowing opinion of something you value could be a waste of time. If you like it, stay with it. The week’s end brings an answer to an old mystery. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There might be time to make a change. But be honest with yourself: Is it what you really want, or one you feel pressured into making? Your answer should determine your next move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Change is dominant, but so is caution: Proceed carefully, checking each step along the way to avoid encountering any unwelcome surprises that might be lurking along your path. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It could be a mistake to rely on someone to keep his or her promise without checking out previous performances. What you learn now could save you from a painful lesson later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking a strong stand on an issue you feel is too important to ignore could inspire others to follow suit. The weekend is a good time to socialize with old friends and make new ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive nature gives you an insight into the problems of someone close to you. Your offer of support could be just what this person needs to start turning his or her life around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters continue to need even more careful analysis than usual. Use caution with investment possibilities. A personal relationship might take an unexpected turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You appreciate the wonders of the world and enjoy sharing your delight with others. On Tuesday, July 16th, 2019, Marjorie A. Martin and other members of the Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post & American Auxiliary Unit #294 honored WWII Veteran Mrs. Euphemia “Faye” Blye, an Avon resident for over 20 years. The Legion members visited Faye Blye, recently of Harpers Park, to present her with an award recognizing her service. From 19441946, the now nearly 96-year-old Blye served in the Airforce as a PFC E-3 and was a part of the Women’s Army Corp, dissolved in 1976.

The man, young Sergeant Kenneth “Ken” O. Blye, asked her to the movies, and she agreed. During the movie, however, she suddenly felt Ken Blye’s head fall to her shoulder. He was asleep and snoring so loudly people were staring. Spirited Faye pushed him away and moved, but the date wasn’t over yet. As Ken Blye took her home, it started to rain. “He gave her a poncho to hold over her head because the roof leaked!” Faye Blye’s youngest son, Bill Blye, said. After that, the two were inseparable.

“They were so cute- all of them,” Faye Blye recalled. “They were the nicest kids you’d ever want to meet. I loved them all, every one of them. They are all gone now.” Some of Blye’s loved ones have passed away-her husband Ken over 31 years ago and her oldest son Ken “Kip” Blye in a tragic car accident 11 years ago, but her family remains very close. Bill and Pam Blye live only minutes away, and her middle son Jim Blye and his wife Mary visit frequently. She also has several grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Bill and Pam Blye’s oldest son, Billy, is uniquely close to his grandmother. “Billy joined the Marines right out of high school,” said Bill Blye. “My mom gave him his grandfather’s dog tags for good luck, and he cherishes them to this day.” Recent years have held honors for Blye. Robert, the son of the French farmer who rescued Ken Blye, wrote a book about the experience. Nearly seven years ago, he invited Blye to visit his hometown. Accompanied by Jim and Mary Blye, she boarded a plane for the first time and flew to France. “They had big celebrations and gave her a key to the city,” shared Bill Blye. “She was in two newspapers. To them, my father was a hero because he came to liberate them.” “He was a hero,” affirmed Faye Blye. Last year, Blye participated in an Honor Flight accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mary Blye. “That was wonderful,” she recalled. When asked how she felt when the Avon American Legion told her they would like to give her an award, Faye Blye replied with characteristic humility. “I thought, What for?,” she said. “But I appreciated it.” “We want her to know she is not forgotten,” said Marjorie A. Martin, adding that anyone wishing to send Faye Blye cards or letters may send them care of the Avon American Legion.

“My father was a radio gunner and was over France when the tail was shot off his B-17 Bomber,” said Bill Blye. “When he jumped out, the door slammed shut on his chute. He said, ‘Oh God, help me!’ and the door flew open. He was the last one out alive.” Fortunately, a French farmer retrieved Ken Blye and concealed him in a small room for about three weeks. Finally, he was smuggled out to the English by the French Underground. Stateside, Faye Blye’s duties included checking men out to, and in from, service overseas. “It was hard,” she confided. “The people who came back were in such different condition. You felt so sorry for them all the time. We would go and stay with them for a couple of hours, you know? They were just so happy to have people around them.” Then, Faye and Ken Blye left the service, married and moved to Massachusetts where Ken Blye had grown up, the third of fifteen children. “When they went to his house, lots of kids were playing outside,” said Bill Blye’s wife Pam. “She said, ‘Which of these are your brothers and sisters?’ He said, ‘All of them.’ The living room was filled with children. She said, ‘Which

Faye Blye’s story of the first time she met her husband highlights her tough, feisty nature. “I was at a USO on base,” she began. “I went to play a song from the jukebox, and this man said, ‘Play number 5.” Her eyes twinkle as she continues. “I said, “Play it yourself! You have all those stripes; you make more money than me!’”

Hi! My name is Duncan.

Adopting a Shelter Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.

I’m a soft coated Wheaten Terrier, and a rescue dog who loved to ride with my daddy. Daddy died and I now ride in the Gator with my mommy. We both miss Daddy! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

The people who do mow at night work for a living, and they don’t mow every night. Be respectful neighbor. Think about it! I very often bring items to the [local] store in [local town], as many people do. Everything sold there is donated, so I can’t get over how most things are marked. Most everything is marked high. HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

REVERSING TOOTH DECAY One of the many reasons to have your teeth checked regularly for signs of tooth decay is that, when detected early, the tooth decay process can be reversed. Teeth “demineralize” as a result of bacteria in the sticky film that coats teeth (plaque) using sugars found in food and drinks to create acids that eat away at enamel. Conversely, there are minerals in saliva (such as calcium and phosphate) plus fluoride from toothpaste, water, and other sources that help enamel ìremineralize” (repair itself by replacing minerals lost during an ìacid attack”). As this battle between demineralization and remineralization constantly rages, it is important to give remineralization the upper hand by brushing and flossing regularly and getting needed fluoride and minerals.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. -- S.T.M. ANSWER: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, Johns Hopkins produced an article stating that possibly being hard of hearing and doing nothing about it could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Is that study still valid? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s been almost 30 years since a link between hearing loss and dementia was first published, and recent research has confirmed this link. It now seems clear that hearing loss increases the rate of decline in brain function by 30% to 40%, independent of other risk factors. Put another way, people with mild hearing loss had double the risk of dementia in 10 years; those with moderate hearing loss, triple the risk; those with severe hearing loss had five times the risk of dementia compared with people of normal hearing and the same age. The brains of people with hearing loss are more likely to atrophy as well. Of course, not everybody with hearing loss develops dementia, and people with normal hearing can. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that hearing aids protect the brain from dementia in people with hearing loss. However, it is clear that hearing aids can improve social functioning, well-being and some measures of memory. Despite this evidence, many older people with hearing loss do not get it treated. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Assisted Living (Enriched Care) vs. Nursing Home – Which is it for my loved one? When looking for senior living options, Nursing Home and Assisted Living (or Enriched Care) terms are commonly misunderstood and are used as “catch all” phrases for ‘senior care’ living styles. Senior living ranges from Independent Living to Assisted Living or Enriched Care, to the highest level of care, Nursing Home (or Skilled Nursing). To better understand a basic breakdown is offered as follows: Independent Living is a community of active adults. Supportive services typically include some or all meals, transportation, activities, some on-site staffing, utilities, but no personal care. Residents are considered “Independent,” meaning they can manage on their own to take medications, manage dressing and grooming as well as bathing, and can get themselves from place to place with no or minimal supportive intervention with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

HEARTY AND HEALTHY CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATO CHILI (NAPSI)—Here’s a new take on an old favorite. Loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals, it’s easy to make. Serve with an array of garnishes, allowing diners to customize their bowls. Nursing Home or Skilled Nursing provides 24-hour medical based care on a short or long-term basis. In Nursing Home facilities, aides and nurses can push residents in wheelchairs or physically help as residents walk, lift residents when unable to stand on their own, treat open wounds and provide specialized medication administration. They often provide intensive in-house physical and occupational therapy, can manage all personal care and hygiene thus providing a high level of hands-on care required to maintain a safe and healthy living environment. Nursing Homes are also licensed by their state and are the highest level of regulation due to the medical nature of care received. Requiring assistance with daily living activities does not necessarily mean Nursing Home level of care. Nursing Homes require a specific evaluation (called a PRI). One must meet the need of higher care to qualify for Nursing Home. Those who do not meet that higher care level are referred to Assisted Living or Enriched Care instead. Because Assisted Living or Enriched Care, and Nursing Homes, are separate levels of licensure, Assisted Living and Enriched Care cannot offer Nursing Home services. They are two very separate levels of care. As we have outlined, you do have to qualify to be appropriate for each one, per their specific NYS Department of Health license and regulations.

Assisted Living or Enriched Care provides meals, transportation, activities, laundry service, utilities and emergency call systems plus oversight of medical care, assistance with personal care, cueing and reminders, and is licensed by the state, but on-site medical care (ie: wound care) or hands-on physical care (ie: lifting) is not allowed by state regulation. Assisted Living or Enriched Care facilities are considered a wellness environment promoting independence within the safe confines In order to compare apples-to-apples and find of a resident’s own ability. Staff and aides assist in the right senior care solution, it’s important to call on Activities of Daily Living or during times of emergency senior living communities and ask questions, as well situations. An assessment or evaluation is required to as allow them to ask YOU questions. Senior living ensure proper placement and to create a personalized communities themselves can vary widely in what care plan for each incoming resident. This determines they have to offer. Be sure to ask questions about the what care is needed and how care will be managed by different products and services provided on-site and the managing nurse and scheduled aides. how they apply to changing needs for their residents. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Health Services And Screenings Every Woman Should Know About (NAPSI)-Eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting a regular Pap smear and mammogram-these are just a few of the many steps women can take to help ensure they live longer, healthier lives. However, it can be tough to figure out what to do, given the mountains of information that are available. So, how can women determine which services and screenings are right for them-and when? You can start by being aware of what the science says about preventing certain health conditions and by having an open and honest conversation with your doctor about your values and preferences. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for women. Fortunately, you can help prevent CVD by addressing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Talk to your doctor about your CVD risk and whether a low- or moderate-dose statin may be right for you. Statins are medications that lower your cholesterol, prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats in your arteries, and reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Depending on your age and risk factors, taking a low-dose aspirin daily can also potentially help prevent CVD. Aspirin can help keep blood clots from happening, lowering your risk. You can reduce your risk of CVD by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and becoming more physically active. Cervical Cancer - Screening for cervical cancer finds the disease when it is most treatable. Unfortunately, 12,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most cases of cervical cancer happen in women who have not been regularly screened or appropriately treated. That is why it is critical for women to get screened regularly starting at age 21. There are several effective options for screening, depending on your age and preferences. The Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and are done during a visit to your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you and how often you should be tested. Breast Cancer - Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women; roughly 237,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. Breast cancer screening aims to find the disease early, when it is easier to treat. Mammograms, which are X-ray pictures of the breasts used by doctors to look for early signs of the disease, are the most effective method of screening for breast cancer. Evidence shows that the benefits of mammograms increase with age, with women aged 60 to 69 most likely to benefit from screening. Still, about one in three women who should get a mammogram regularly do not. If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram regularly. Screening for Osteoporosis - As people age, their bones begin to thin. For some people, their bones become very weak and can break or fracture more easily, a condition known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects one in every four women age 65 or older in the United States. Bone measurement tests can be used to screen for osteoporosis and identify the likelihood of future fractures. For people who have osteoporosis, treatments are available to reduce the risk of a fracture. If you are a woman age 65 or older ask your doctor about being screened for osteoporosis and other ways to improve bone health. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOME SERVICES

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office. GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.
