PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Dog is freeking out over face masks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time I put on a medical face mask, my dog “Artie” starts barking like mad. When I speak to him, he will stop barking, but he looks restless and whines. He doesn’t bark at strangers that we pass on our walks -- just me and my husband. What is going on? -Sarah S., Burlington, Vermont DEAR SARAH: Artie is freaking out because he is familiar with you and your husband’s faces, and suddenly, without warning, those faces are gone! He may rely on your faces for visual cues, like a smile or frown. The sudden change is unnerving him. Taking off the mask isn’t an option right now, especially in areas that mandate face mask use whenever you’re outside due to the pandemic. Instead, the American Kennel Club recommends both desensitizing dogs to the face mask and helping them associate positive things with it. Before putting on the mask, show it to Artie and let him sniff it. Carry a mask around the house, but don’t wear it; let it hang off of one ear, or wear it under your chin, so that Artie sees you with it regularly. The AKC even suggests taping a mask on the wall next to Artie’s food bowl, although if he shows signs of stress having it there, take it down and try something else. Try using hand signals that correspond to the command or praise you want to give. This can help redirect his attention from your face and help him make the connection that you are still there and providing guidance. Make sure that Artie is in a comfortable state before training sessions. Ease off if he begins to act concerned or stressed. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs. TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Learn More: For further facts and to see a menu and a map of the nearest location, go to www.churchs.com.

WE ARE OPEN! Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

five or six times at night to urinate. The urgent care doctor said he doesn’t have an infection but doesn’t know what’s going on. He is taking Flomax, but that doesn’t seem to be helping. Who should he see? -- E.L.O. ANSWER: Urinating at nighttime (“nocturia”) is a common problem for men, but if this is a new or suddenly worsened problem, it requires evaluation. The first question is whether he is urinating a lot or a little. A male bladder typically holds about 500 cc (almost a quart), so if his bladder were full every time, he might be making as much as 2.5 liters a night. Nighttime urination is considered high-volume when it constitutes a third or more of total urine output for 24 hours. High-volume nocturia can happen when there is too much of something to get rid of: sugar, in people with mellitus (“sugar diabetes”); salt, in people who eat too much salt at dinner; water, in people who drink a whole lot of water, especially at night; and occasionally in people with congestive heart failure. In heart failure, there is not enough blood flow to the kidneys during the day, so when the person is at rest, the kidneys have enough blood flow to get rid of the fluid that has accumulated during the day (often in the legs and feet). Another cause of high-volume nocturia is diabetes insipidus, a problem with either the kidney or the control center in the brain, causing the kidney to excrete too much water. That control center uses a hormone called anti-diuretic hormone to regulate water excretion. Normally, it is high at night, so there is less urine output at night. Sometimes this normal variation is reversed, leading to excess urine output at night, even without diabetes insipidus. High-volume nocturia is most commonly evaluated by doctors in internal medicine, including kidney and heart specialists. Low-volume nocturia is caused by a problem with the bladder or, in men, the prostate. Urologists are the experts in figuring out where the problem is and the best course of treatment. Many men get treated for prostate problems when the real issue is an overactive bladder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My blood pressure drug, losartan, was recalled because of contamination issues with NDEA and NDMA; one is used to make liquid rocket fuel and the other is a byproduct in the manufacture of pesticides. How does this happen? Does the drug company share manufacturing facilities with companies that make these other products? -- EG ANSWER: I read some speculation by chemists on how the contamination could have happened, and it seems to me that one company made a new process for making losartan (and the related drugs irbesartan and valsartan) that, although cheaper and more efficient, allowed contaminants to form unrecognized. Although not recognized until 2018, it could have been happening since 2012. Other companies changed their manufacturing as well, unaware of these toxic impurities. This is a real problem, not so much because of this current recall (where the contamination levels are very low), but because it shows the industry lacks enough oversight to quickly identify contamination in generic pharmaceuticals coming from multiple countries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Vary the prices of items on the list. In addition to including more expensive items on the registry, make sure to include moderately priced and inexpensive items. This gives guests more options and ensures guests who might be spending a lot to travel to and from the wedding can still purchase gifts without digging too much deeper into their pockets.

Our names are Jack and Jill. We are a pair of peach faced lovebirds who love to play with our toys, tear them apart, and lift up the doors of our home. When we make sounds, mom says we sound like we need an oil can, but that it’s ok, our dad is a mechanic by trade. We are loved and well taken care of.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area.

“One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Take a good look at Disney princesses and you’ll notice that they’re all essentially attired in typical princess garb of gown, tiara, etc. But here’s a small difference you might not have picked up on -- some wear gloves, and some don’t. What’s up with that? The ladies without gloves are commoners who married into royalty.

Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day THANK YOU, AMAN ROOFING! When I phoned to ask for an estimate to fix the soffit at my dad’s house, James was prompt in getting there and very courteous. After looking at the soffit, James noticed my dad’s VFW hat, and since my dad is a war veteran, James called me to tell me that they give discounts to veterans. Since the fix was small, he indicated they BRIGHT LIGHTS! Our neighbors on (local) lake across from (local homes) have been shinning huge bright lights across the lake. They started with one and are now up to three. These lights are so bright that it takes the joy out of sitting on our balconies in the evening, even in our living rooms. Very annoying! There doesn’t seem to be any reason for shinning them. Please be courteous and turn them off. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Every single morning, as the sun is coming up, lasting a few hours, your dog barks nonstop. If your decision is to keep your dog in a chicken coop 24/7, 365 days a year, in a village neighborhood, maybe you should think about moving to the country. PLEASE BE POLITE I work in retail at a local grocery store. Ever since this GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

diamond that broke off my necklace. It was a gift from my late husband and means the world to me. We totally blocked the entrance to the store while everyone looked for it, but no one complained. Thank you so much!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! THANK YOU FOR I want to thank the staff BEING KIND and customers at Mahan’s Thank you so much to all Liquor Store in Brockport of those who are sharing for helping me find my little love, support, and tolerance all started, I’ve noticed an uptick in customers being rude, unfriendly, or downright hostile toward us. Please understand that we’re working longer, more hectic hours, and all for around minimum wage since this whole pandemic started. If your cashier is slow, they’re probably exhausted. If we don’t have anything in stock, it’s not the stockers’ fault. If corporate raised prices, there’s nothing those of us working in the store can do. It costs nothing to be polite and not kick up a fuss. I’m sad that I have to feel anxious about going to work because I fully expect someone to insult or harass me over things beyond my control. If your shopping experience is bad, think of what working here must be like.

and realize that the people who do these are using their time, talent, and money to try and brighten someone’s day. Instead, you find reason to complain. They are creating random gifts, not trash. If you don’t like them, then simply look away. It’s not like it is a huge eyesore blocking your whole path. Try to find some beauty and happiness in this walk we call life instead of complaining and nitpicking at every single little item. You will find much more comfort. It takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown. Try it!

INCONSIDERATE ATVS I would like to thank all the inconsiderate people who buy 4-wheel vehicles and speed up and down our roads illegally at all hours of the day & night. during these difficult times. It is so beautiful to see people encouraging each other to be mindful of what another person may be going through. Thank you to the many, many people who care more about the well-being of their neighbors than about fighting to establish a point-of-view. Thank you to those who remind us all to be kind, always.

these vehicles, and unless you have a street posted that allows ATV’s to travel on them, you are not legal! You also need to be licensed to travel these roads with license plates. We value our rural life and have free range animals, horseback riders, bicycle riders that are near or use our roads, and unlicensed, uninsured ATV’s pose problems. These vehicles also travel in fields without our permission. What happens if there are accidents, no one is liable? Use some common sense and obey the law! LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

10. MUSIC: What was the original name of the pop rock group Maroon 5?

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Answers 1. Crookshanks 2. A ferrule 3. A tower 4. Michigan 5. Central Perk 6. Eight 7. Flow of tears 8. A washcloth 9. Nicholas II 10. Kara’s Flowers

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN

Indoor Dining and Outdoor Patio Open!

Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better.

Full menu available on our Facebook page

Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

Sherry Sabo Shares Advice for Schooling at Home BY AMANDA DUDEK

Teaching children at home has been a valid educational option for many years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many parents to seriously consider homeschooling their children for the first time. A number of families are in districts which will hold virtual classes this fall, while others are looking to lead their children’s education themselves. Sherry and Lou Sabo of North Winton Village have led one of New York’s 17 LEAH (Loving Education At Home) chapters for 17 of the 18 years they homeschooled. Today, they continue to volunteer as Rochester-Finger Lakes Regional Representatives for Homeschool New York/ LEAH. The Sabos understand the challenge of balancing work and family. They are local businesses owners, have successfully raised and homeschooled their three children, now ages 26, 28 & 29, and are expecting their first grandchild. A leader for LEAH, a faith-based homeschooling organization which has supported area homeschoolers for more than 35 years, Sherry Sabo shares advice, encouragement and practical tips both for those homeschooling their children and for those whose children will attend virtual classes at home.

“We have been talking with a lot of people who are considering homeschooling this fall,” says Sherry Sabo. She explains that while some families were already planning on homeschooling, others are feeling forced into it by the COVID-19 pandemic. She encourages these families to think of teaching their children at home as a positive opportunity. “The one-on-one tutorial method of education is a most effective method of learning,” explains Sabo. “That is why we sometimes hire tutors. Individual instruction is a real positive compared to many children getting a small slice of the teacher’s time when possible.” Sabo adds that parents are more able to tailor their curriculum to each child and his or her interests. Curriculum can be developed around those interests while taking into account learning needs and adaptations, special needs, and accelerated learning. “It is wonderful to be able to fine tune their schoolwork to support their interests and needs,” she continues. “You can help them find their passion and supplement their learning to help them follow their dreams, beyond the standard curriculum. She adds that including her family’s faith and values into the learning process was very important to them, as well. Regardless of the materials, each curriculum must meet subject requirements listed in the New York SED homeschool regulations. “It’s important to understand the Homeschool regulations in New York State,” Sabo said. “They are the plumb line for your relationship with the school. They also keep you from trying to do too much, creating anxiety and stress, or from not doing enough.”

FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2020

Parents whose children are attending their school’s virtual classes at home may not have to choose their curriculum, but there are plenty of other challenges. “Many parents shared their experience of extreme frustration attempting online classes while juggling one or two devices between their children. It was very frustrating because they felt they couldn’t keep up,” explains Sabo. “They were accountable to several teachers, yet each has a different style and amount of work they expect.” While there will doubtlessly be differences from teacher to teacher, the fall should see some of the other bumps smoothed out. Sabo suggests parents of virtual schoolers and homeschoolers alike limit screen time as much as possible. “Supplement the content with books you read with your children,” suggests Sabo. “Over and over again, reading together has been proven both beneficial and effective, opening up new worlds of imagination and improving the vocabulary.” Several students also struggle with focus, particularly when their environment has changed. While Sabo again highlights the importance of limiting screen time, she also encourages parents to be creative with their setup. She suggests not trying to create a child’s classroom at home. “Don’t try to bring the public-school classroom set up into your home,” she advises. “Let them get used to you being their teacher. Minimize seat time and give them frequent breaks. For example, children in grades K-3 shouldn’t spend more than an hour of seat time total and not all at once, but rather using nonsequential, 15-minute lessons. Meet the requirements;

"If

then let them venture on their own. Let them self-direct their learning and explore their own interests, fostering and protecting their love of learning. This helps create lifelong learners.” Sabo suggests setting a timer for each lesson and making sure breaks include running and other movement-based play. She also recommends allowing each child to spend time doing something that is fun for them at the end of each school day. “It doesn’t have to be a reward every time,” she notes. “But it is fun to throw that in.” The changes and challenges parents are facing this fall can be daunting, but Sabo insists parents can do this. “Do not be afraid,” she exclaims. “You have already taught your child so many other things. Don’t be afraid of some of your weaker areas. If your child is taking classes virtually with their school, the school can offer extra resources and support. If you have decided to homeschool, most curriculums provide excellent teacher guides for each course. If you are nervous about a particular topic, practice the lesson a few times until you feel more confident.” “Enlist the help of others such as grandparents,” continues Sabo. “Share some teaching with a homeschooling neighbor. Join a homeschool co-op to attend one day a week for classes like art, gym, science, and other topics. If there is an outstanding need, there will always be a resource. Seek out friends who are strong in areas with which your child needs help and in which you also struggle. Consider hiring a tutor for concepts which remain challenging."

you are determined, there will always be

creative ways to make it work!" DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.

Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

Turning 65 was easy…

Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

Understanding Medicare isn’t!

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Coronavirus Scammers Scammers have come up with even more ways to defraud us, this time using the coronavirus. Contact tracers are people who make calls when someone you know has tested positive for the coronavirus. Their job is to trace the possible path the virus has taken from person to person. They only need health information and the places you’ve been, not financial or personal information. If someone calls you who insists on knowing additional information as part of the contact tracing, hang up. If you get emails or calls from someone saying they have a cure for the virus, or a sure-fire method of being certain you don’t get it, hang up. Their next questions will likely be to ask for your personal or financial information, or a credit card number so you can pay for shipping. Don’t fall for it. There are no approved test kits or cures that can be handed out to the general public. If you get email that’s supposedly from the government asking about where to send your stimulus relief check, ignore it. The government is not going to contact you about that. They’ll send your check (if you’re eligible for one) in the mail or they’ll deposit it directly into your account, the same one where they deposit your Social Security benefit. Scammers also will pretend to be people from your bank. If you get suspicious email that looks like it might be from the government with information about coronavirus, don’t open it, and especially don’t click on any links. Those can put a virus or tracer on your computer. To stay up on the news about the virus, use a legitimate source: www.ftc.gov/coronavirus. On that site you’ll find more information about avoiding coronavirus scams. Beware ... and stay safe.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

Certified Teaching Assistant (10-month position) Interviews upon receipt of application Application available at www.yorkcsd.org Send cover letter, resume and application to: York Central School Attn: Heidi Newcomb, District Office P.O. Box 102 2578 Genesee Street, Retsof, NY 14539 THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

Immediate Openings 8-hour / 12-hour shifts available Apply today and reach your goals with Perry’s!

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
