HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.
I was dumped at the vets where my Mom used to work. I was tiny but thought I was bigger since I hissed at everyone. That’s why she named me Sassy but I’m really a love bug. Mom and I have been through a lot together. Lost Dad a few years ago but I was always there when Mom cried. I moved back to NY with her too. Not crazy about the cold but I sleep with Mom every night. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Save Energy And Money (NAPS)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energyefficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580, based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally sound single- or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Learn More For further facts and stats about saving money and energy, go to www.iwfa.com.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. In 1962, Epstein was hired in a deal that gave him 25 percent of the band’s gross earnings for five years. On Aug. 28, 1917, 10 women suffragists are arrestedas they picket the White House to demand that President Woodrow Wilson support a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. After the jailed women went on a hunger strike and had to be force fed for months, Wilson finally agreed to a suffrage amendment. On Aug. 26, 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York. The video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles.
To save money and energy, have window film installed instead of replacement windows. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chestclutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HAIRY SITUATION It can be somewhat alarming to find “hair” growing on your tongue. “Hairy tongue,” the term used to describe the growth of small, dark projections (filiform papillae) that give the tongue a furry appearance, develops due to defective shedding of the tongue’s covering tissue. Fortunately, this condition, which occurs in as much as 13 percent of the population, is temporary and harmless. The tongue is normally covered with conically shaped filiform papillae that are approximately one millimeter long. Due to lack of stimulation or abrasion to the top of the tongue, a buildup of keratin (protein), bacteria, yeast, and other debris can create a hair-like mesh. Good oral hygiene, including the use of a tongue scraper, helps resolve the issue. Experiencing some unusual oral symptoms you’ve never had before or
even heard of before? We recommend a professional assessment of your situation to ease your mind and correct your condition. Call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246 so we can send you on your way to a healthier mouth. Office hours are by appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. Patients with hairy tongue may complain of a gagging or tickling sensation in the soft palate (roof) of the mouth during swallowing. Bad breath or abnormal taste may also result.

Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

I have to give a shout out and many thanks to Jackie Whiting and staff for an amazing summer recreation program! Not only are the costs for each program affordable, but the staff is always so friendly and helpful during their camps! They are great role models for our kids as well! Very proud to live in such a great community that provides awesome activities for the kids in the summer with a very friendly and hands-on staff! Keep up the great work! See you next summer!
with our society, and we shouldn’t waste our time over something that brings the community together. Worst Fast Food Ever! I occasionally go to a fast food restaurant in [local town]. I always go through the drive thru. I would like to point out how consistent they are with their orders...consistently wrong. I have yet to receive a complete correct order. I ordered six items and paid for six items. There were exactly four. My boyfriend ordered a hamburger, and when he got it home it had no meat on it. My coffee was served cold. We’ve ordered and emphasized repeatedly, “no cheese,” only to have said item dripping in cheese. It is so hard to comprehend. Things never used to be this bad. [local county]. When you go into a place of business, you would think that you would be well taken care of. Not there! Three employees ignored my family as we stood there, waiting several minutes to be served. They were standing around off to the side of the cash register, not acknowledging our existence. Then, one employee looked right at us and turned back to the others without saying anything. That same employee had an extra large drink right in front of the register in full view of the customers. The worst part is this is the third time that we have had an awful experience at this place. It has the most unprofessional employees that I have seen in a long time.

Dansville’s First Pediatrician, Dr. Joan Flender: Up Close and Personal By Amanda Dudek
P
erched on the edge of her seat, Dr. Joan Flender answers questions with poise, honesty and passion. Her gaze steady, she has a reputation for making others feel heard, valued. In 1981, Dr. Flender, moved to Dansville, becoming, quite intentionally, its first ever pediatrician. “My husband worked in Rochester,” said Dr. Flender. “We drew an hour circle around Rochester and looked for anywhere there was a hospital.” Both Brockport and Canandaigua had pediatricians at the time, but Dansville did not. Dr. Flender decided she would be the first. “Plus, it’s gorgeous here,” she quipped. Raised in New York City and Long Island, Dr. Flender always enjoyed science and working with people. “I was a psychology major,” explained Dr. Flender. “I took the MCATS because all of my friends were taking them.” Dr. Flender went on to Cornell Medical College then U of R for her residency. It was there she felt drawn to pediatrics and child development. “I loved seeing a child at six months, then again at six years, watching the child grow,” she said. “My goal in life was to make a difference,” explained Dr. Flender. “I realized the best way to do that would be to move to a small town where they had never had a pediatrician and to try to improve health care for kids.” “I joined Tricounty Family Medicine,” Dr. Flender recalled. “It was wonderful.” Her first patients were referrals from the school. “The first few children we saw were quite sick,” said Dr. Flender. “Perhaps because they were not seen regularly or because they hadn’t had a pediatrician here before.” Pediatricians spend three years focusing solely on children and teens. “We got the checkups going,” said Dr. Flender. “We established connections with the school, daycare... anything that has to do with kids.” In 1988, Dr. Flender started Stony Brook Pediatrics and was joined by Dr. Diane Rapp and Dr. Susan Slowinski. There are now 6 providers at offices in both Dansville and Geneseo. “I love what I do,” Dr. Flender reflected. “Would I do it again? Yes. I love the cross generational interaction here. In the city, people hang out with others their age. Here, it is more family-oriented and multigenerational.” Dr. Flender enjoys this within her own family. Married almost forty years, she raised her three sons in Dansville, and one of them, along with his wife, is currently raising his own family in the very home in which he was raised. Dr. Flender also takes a more personal approach to health care. “I will still do house visits,” she said. “Also, if I have bad news, I am not going to give that to you over the phone. I am going to come to your home. Sadly, we have had patients pass away, and some of those experiences have bonded me with families the most because we do it together if need be.” Little wonder Dr. Flender is beloved by many Dansville families. “My mother and I believe in ‘Be nice,’” she explained. “In my practice, we try to be helpful, pleasant and not get in people’s way when they are raising their kids.” “We have expanded hours and leave our phones on. When can working people make a phone call?” she asked. “On their lunch break! We accommodate them. We don’t let those things that bother us happen to our patients.” Dr. Flender also takes an active role in the community, serving on the Board of Health and on the board at Noyes. “I’ll go to school

meetings or observe a kid in school, and we don’t charge for that,” she said. “It’s just part of what we do. We are involved with the school and have been the physicians, free-of-charge, for Rotary Camp since 1981.” “We have our own foundation, as well,” added Dr. Flender. “Some people know about it and contribute to it. When a child becomes very ill, sometimes, a parent has to stay home to care for that child for several weeks or months. We quietly pay a couple of months of their mortgage, help out with gas money or other needs. We just tell them to pay it forward.” “It is a career for me, not just a 9-5,” said Dr. Flender. “I didn’t want to have a strict divide between work and home. I wanted it to merge. I managed to make that work, and I am very happy.” Dr. Flender reads two science magazines and several medical journals every week, too. “It is a passion of mine, and I love it,” she said. “One of my great fears is not knowing everything!” Although Dr. Flender now heads south each winter, she does not yet see retirement on her horizon. “Medicine and science excite me,” she said. “There have been amazing changes. In 1981, it was basically an infectious disease practice. We were seeing all sorts of things that now, with vaccines, we don’t see anymore.” “Over time, we have become more focused on behavioral concerns,” she said. “We now have the luxury to focus on that - Dr. Joan Flender because we are not worried about children dying all the time, which is truly lovely. Kids live longer and healthier than they ever have.” When asked what she would say to young people interested in entering the medical field, Dr. Flender didn’t hesitate. “Do it,” she answered. “It is such a privilege to take care of patients and for families to let you participate in their lives. It is just a lovely thing to do to help people feel better and be with them through both good and difficult times.”
My goal in life was to be able to make a difference in the world, and in the medical field, I can make that difference.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2019
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful not to allow the backers of a new financial “deal” to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes. It could hold fewer plusses and more negatives than you were first led to believe. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good idea to finish all incomplete tasks so that you can devote your attention to next week’s projects. The weekend could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas and Ferdinands. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A workplace suggestion you made a while ago that you might have forgotten could come back with a request to turn it from idea to reality. Your social life picks up considerably this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Someone from the past could return with an intriguing opportunity for a future project. Check into it, by all means. But don’t neglect your current responsibilities in the meantime. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keeping your claws sheathed and using good humor instead to counter someone who’s badmouthing the Big Cat isn’t easy. But it’s the best way to avoid more problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace situation could improve if you’re less critical and more supportive of those who are, after all, trying to do their best. Let them know you’re there to help when necessary. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new job offer might not carry all the benefits you’re seeking. Make sure you know what you’re entitled to, what is off the table and what is negotiable before you make a decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A social obligation you would rather get out of could hold some surprisingly positive aspects. Why not go and see for yourself? A family member makes a curious request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before tackling that new project awaiting you at home or on the job, take time out for some much-deserved pampering to help lift your spirits and restore your energy levels. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your social calendar begins to fill up more quickly than you expected. And that’s great. You deserve to enjoy some good fun after so much time spent on serious matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A domestic situation continues to improve, thanks to all the tender, loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague makes a questionable move that you might want to check out sooner rather than later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden turn in a romantic relationship calls for both a rational and passionate response. Keep the love level high, but also find out why the problem arose in the first place. BORN THIS WEEK: You often set high standards for others. But to your credit, you set the same expectations for yourself.

Kick off home improvement season with easy maintenance projects Top up your attic insulation. Many older homes have inadequate levels of insulation in the attic that wouldn’t meet today’s building code. Topping it up will help reduce energy consumption and keep your house cooler in the summer months. Aim for a depth of 16 inches or an R-value of 50. Insulating properly could also provide added benefits, such as improving the longevity of your air conditioner by reducing stress on the unit as temperatures rise.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.
In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic. Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender. To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook. Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired. STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Too much direct heat: Food should not char on the outside before the inside has a chance to cook. A two-zone fire, according to food experts at Serious Eats, enables grillmasters to cook over high heat to sear and then move the food to a lower temperature to continue to cook evenly.
