COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Pet Place _____________________2

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

This usually calms her while she is waiting. The doctor even has used the outline to talk about her body to her.” -- E.S. in Georgia

* “In older houses, you might have a problem with cracking drywall when trying to hang pictures. You can solve this by placing a bit of clear tape over the spot where you’re going to drive a nail. It goes right in. If you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking. It does the same thing, keeping the wood from splitting.” -- P.K. in New Jersey * To prevent garbage cans from filling with water during rainstorms, drill several holes in the bottom, near the sides. This also will help bags to come out of the can easier.

Why does my maple tree have black spots on its leaves, and they are progresses. Small, black, tar-like raised dropping all over my yard? structures form on the upper surface It is called maple tree tar spot disease or within these yellow spots. The black spots Rhytismataceae. Coccomyces dentatus continue to grow in diameter and thickness is a species of fungus in the family to the point where it looks like someone Rhytismataceae. A widespread species, splashed tar on the leaves. Symptoms tend particularly in temperate areas, it colonizes to be more common on trees growing in the dead fallen leaves of vascular plants moist, sheltered locations. Impact: This and is commonly found on oaks, chestnut disease is usually a cosmetic problem and maples. Symptoms: Tar spot is one and does not affect the long-term health of the most readily visible and easiest of the tree. Heavy infections can cause maple diseases to diagnose. It’s also one premature leaf drop – a circumstance of the least damaging ailments on its that causes great consternation to host. The first tar spot symptoms usually homeowners because lawns are littered show up in early summer as small, light- and must be raked before autumn green to yellowish-green spots. The spots typically arrives. Management: Since tar enlarge and color intensifies as summer spot fungi overwinter in fallen leaves, the

most effective management technique is to rake and destroy leaves in the fall. This will reduce the number of overwintering “spots” that can infect new leaves the following spring. Neighbors should also rake and destroy infected leaves to be effective. Mulching leaves will destroy many of the spots before they mature, but the mulch pile should be covered or turned before new leaves begin to emerge in the spring. Applications of fungicides

are possible when high levels of infection become unacceptable, but control of tar spot is challenging, especially on mature maples. In addition, if others in a neighborhood setting are not managing the disease on their trees with fungicides or proper sanitation, the act of spraying may be a waste of time and money. HOMETOWN

In a typical case of Raynaud’s phenomenon, also known as Raynaud’s disease or syndrome, sufferers experience numbness and pain in their fingers, toes and other extremities. Fingers turn white, blue or red as the small blood vessels go into spasm within minutes of exposure to cold or stress, and they appear to be “dead” as blood flow is constricted. Named for the French physician Maurice Raynaud, who first recognized the condition in 1862, it causes an interruption of blood flow to the fingers, toes, nose or ears. There may be associated tingling, swelling or painful throbbing. The attacks may last from minutes to hours. In severe cases, the area may develop ulcerations and infections, which can lead to gangrene. Raynaud’s can occur as a “primary” disease—that is, with no associated disorder—or as a “secondary” condition related to other diseases, such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

President

........................... Steve Harrison Vice President

“Ninety percent of Raynaud’s sufferers don’t seek treatment and too many physicians pay short shrift to those who do,” says Lynn Wunderman, founder and chair of the Raynaud’s Association. “Treatment is important because some sufferers may have an underlying condition such as systemic scleroderma or lupus. Awareness of such a problem may allow for earlier medical intervention.” Simple blood tests can rule out the presence of antibodies associated with diseases that have Raynaud’s as a component.

What’s Being Done To help, the Raynaud’s Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit health organization, launched a new and assertive campaign,”Don’t Turn a Cold Shoulder to Painful Fingers,” to urge those with the disorder— and their doctors—not to dismiss the pain that Raynaud’s sufferers endure, or the lifestyle adjustments they make to minimize exposure to cold or stress.

Although there is no known cure as yet, treatment options such as calcium channel blocker drugs have been clinically proven to alleviate symptoms by opening up the blood vessels so blood circulates more freely.

S E V RA Lovely cemetery A big Thank You goes out to whomever lovingly cares for the Union Hill Cemetery. The monuments are trimmed around and the grounds are mowed regularly. There are no tall weeds to wade through when visiting deceased friends and family. Your efforts are very much appreciated and deserve recognition! Thanks to so many! On Sunday, August 8th, I was involved in a rollover accident on 5&20 at Bragg Street. Thanks to so many that stopped to assist: Harley rider Bill and his girlfriend; Nurse Meredith and her son; EMT Mary and others that I didn’t get their names. Your help was greatly appreciated and has renewed my faith that people are kind and good. I owe you all a beer! - Sharon K.

Updated commandment Thou shalt not steal, whilst thou hath not to giveth back. Common courtesy We’re in obvious unchartered waters these days, but for those of you who bother to apply to the many open positions and agree to an in-person interview, not show up without so much as a phone call for explanation is beyond bad manners. Please have the common courtesy and decency to at least call and say you’ve decided not to waste the would-be employer’s valuable time! A new stadium As I looked at the rendering of the new multi-billion dollar stadium, I found it hard to see any difference from the present stadium. A field, seats, luxury boxes, etc., are pretty much what we already have and have paid for. They’re even going to build the new stadium in [local town] where the team has been for years. I’m a fan, just not a fan of this new stadium when the old one is just fine.

VERNON AVE. ONLINE ONLY REAL ESTATE AUCTION WED., SEPT. 15, 2021 • BATAVIA, NY Online Bidding Starts to Close @ 6 P.M. w/ a Soft Close LOCATION: House is located at 52 Vernon Ave., Batavia, N.Y. 14020

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Do Cats, Goldfish Mix? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My daughter received a goldfish for her last birthday, and true to her word, she has kept the fish healthy and happy. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? -- Judy G., Seattle DEAR JUDY: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention -- if not actively trying to get a paw into the water. Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat. Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too -- but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds. Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do. But you also have the opportunity to guide your daughter and have her be part of the decision as to whether a kitten is a good idea at this point, or whether she should wait another year.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Doors and more: Solid wood doors make great tops for tables and kitchen islands, old-fashioned screen doors hung from the ceiling can store pots and pans, and old windows make attractive wall hangings used “as is” or with additions, such as photos.

ANY OIL CHANGE AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

DID YOU KNOW? Through the years, cars have evolved so much that certain parts once integral to their operation have now become obsolete. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future. However, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles. Ashtrays and cigarette lighters: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent. Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard. Full-sized spare tire: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules. Control knobs: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road. Bench seats: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console. No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle. Whip antenna: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way. If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete as well. AUTOMOTIVE

CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE A PART OF HOME SAFETY Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire. Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen. Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

585-345-0915 Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Irish author and politician Edmund Burke was not a skilled public speaker. In fact, his speeches at the House of Commons were so boring, many MPs left the building once he stood up. * While Jackie Robinson was laid up for two weeks in 1948 with a hamstring injury, the Dodgers secretly replaced him with Herschel Morowitz, a white man in black face. * Drinking seawater will cause rapid dehydration and, if enough is consumed, eventually death. Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice.

INNOVATIONS IN IMPLANTS Today’s restorative dentistry innovations create precise, less invasive replacements for failing or missing teeth. New designs in implants create stronger, more natural replacements without affecting surrounding teeth, improving both tooth appearance and functionality. The use of computer assisted design (CAD) in dentistry now facilitates the creation of an exact replica of the implant, eliminating much of the loss of bone during positioning. Perhaps the most remarkable advancement is the employment of computer- guided surgical maps to precisely plan out the implantation to ensure exact positioning. Additionally, the use of new, antibacterial coatings in implants provides protection from commonly ingested acids, which prolongs the life of the materials. These major advancements enhance the dental

implantation procedure and longevity of the restoration. Modern implants have been in use since the 1970s, and today these substitutes for missing natural teeth have never been more effective, comfortable, and natural-looking. However, you still need to take care of them as well as your oral hygiene with regular professional checkups and scrupulous home care. Complete dental care for all members of your family is available here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, where we utilize only the latest in dental technology for your care and comfort. Office hours are by appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call 585.343.4246. Most insurance plans accepted.

P.S. The first recorded case of a metal tooth implant dates back to 1000 BC, when an Egyptian king had a copper peg driven into his jawbone.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

Reader Seeks Alternative to Rx Antidepressant ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffer from depression. It comes and goes, but I’ve been feeling sad, worried and angry, as well as irritable, for the past four months or so. I force myself to function. My family doctor prescribed a 37.5 mg dose of Effexor once a day to start and after one week, twice a day. I looked up the side effects and what I read scared me. Instead, I’ve been taking 1,000 mg of St. John’s wort daily for almost three weeks, and I have noticed no discernible effect. I told my doctor I would take the Effexor after three weeks if the St. John’s wort hasn’t helped. Should I take his advice? Are there better alternatives? I am middle age and take zero prescription drugs. -- S.M. ANSWER: St. John’s wort, Hypericum perforatum, is a yellow flower that has been medicinally used for centuries. Initial studies suggested benefit in people with mild to moderate depression, and several substances in the flower have been shown to have pharmacologic effects on serotonin receptors, among other effects. However, other trials have shown it to be no better than placebo. It does have important drug interactions, fortunately not an issue for you (as long as you let the St. John’s wort wear off before starting Effexor), but for some people the potential interactions are dangerous. Side effects are not common, but include gastrointestinal upset, dizziness and confusion, fatigue, dry mouth and sexual side effects. It can make people more sensitive to sunlight, and may decrease fertility. The studies that did show a benefit lasted four to 12 weeks. It is possible you might not have had benefit from it yet, and waiting a little longer -- say another week -- wouldn’t be unreasonable to really give the St. John’s wort a chance. However, I seldom recommend this herb due to lack of consistent benefit in trials, the potential for drug interactions and a concern about poor regulation of supplements in terms of amount and purity of the ingredients. For people who want to avoid prescription medicine, I have often recommended S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). The evidence is better and the side effects and drug interactions fewer. Effexor may be a good choice for you. Prescription antidepressants have been shown to be better than placebo, but they certainly do not work for everybody. If Effexor isn’t a good choice, there are several others. However, I would strongly recommend you consider nonpharmacologic treatment for depression whether or not you decide to take additional medication treatment. ***

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

COME VISIT US!

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Biggest Raise in Decades for Social Security? Don’t count your money before it’s in hand, of course. But word is that the Social Security increase we see in January could be as much as 6.1%, the largest since 1983. For the average benefit recipient, currently receiving $1,543, that could amount to $94 per month. It’s a few years too late for a serious increase, but certainly better than the 1.3% bump we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. Social Security is calculated by the cost-of-living adjustment in the third quarter each year. For 2021, they calculated that a 1.3% increase should be plenty. We know that was wrong, as prices of everything had climbed. It’s all in how and what they calculate. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which measures prices on certain goods and services. But we’re not wage earners, and we don’t work in offices. We spend our money on different things. We wonder why they don’t use the index for the elderly (CPI-E), which takes into consideration the things we do buy, such as medical care, medical services, housing and health insurance. (There’s a bill in the House of Representatives -- H.R.4315 -- to do that very thing.) We spend less than the CPI-W group on transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, education and communication. The Federal Reserve Bank did a midsummer survey on what consumers are expecting for the rest of 2021. The expectation of responders is that we’ll see a 4.8% increase on top of what we’ve already seen this year. Keep an eye on the news in October, when the rate of next year’s Social Security increase is finalized. Meanwhile start planning for next year as soon as you can. Look for savings everywhere you can find them. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The George Eastman Museum receives $70,470 grant award from the National Film Preservation Foundation

T

he George Eastman Museum recently received a grant award for $70,470 from the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) to preserve three rare, endangered nitrate feature films from the museum’s collection. The 35mm prints of The Country Beyond (Irving Cummings, US 1926) and The Millionaire Vagrant (Victor Schertzinger, US 1917) are likely the only versions of the films that still exist. The single reel from The Gold Rush (Charles Chaplin, US 1925) is the only material for this legendary film that survives with original tinting. Due to nitrate decomposition in all three films, this is the last chance to save these unique prints. The Country Beyond, The Gold Rush, and The Millionaire Vagrant are all currently housed at the George Eastman Museum in optimal conditions but are nevertheless deteriorating. All of Chaplin’s major works, silent and sound, were originally released in black and white, with the exception of some early shorts (tinted in the night scenes). The Gold Rush is known for being Chaplin’s favorite film and the one for which he hoped audiences would remember him. A fourth nitrate film in the Eastman Museum collection, The Oath of the Sword (Japanese American Film Company, US 1914), will be preserved under a separate NFPF grant awarded to the Japanese American National Museum (JANM). The JANM will work in collaboration with the Eastman Museum to preserve this silent film made in the United States with an all-Japanese cast. Historians consider it the first Asian American motion picture.

The Gold Rush (Charles Chaplin, US 1925).

provide support to create a film preservation master and two access copies of each work. Films saved through the NFPF programs are used in education and seen widely through screenings, exhibits, DVDs, television broadcasts, and the Internet. A curated selection of the preserved films is available for viewing on the NFPF website, and more than 250 additional titles have been made accessible by our grant recipients. For a complete list of projects supported by the NFPF, visit the NFPF website: filmpreservation.org. About the George Eastman Museum Olive Borden in The Country Beyond

These films are fragile and (Irving Cummings, US 1926). while decomposition is present in them, they are still viable for photochemical film preservation, and ultimately, digital access. The grant funds will be used for laboratory preservation work at Cinema Arts Laboratory in Newfoundland, PA, and at Eastman Museum Film Preservation Services in Rochester, NY, including 4K digital scanning and creating a new 35mm negative, a 35mm print, and a DCP version of each film. Upon completion of the project, the films will be available in 35mm prints and digital copies for both research and public screenings through the museum. The project will be overseen by Anthony L’Abbate, preservation manager at the George Eastman Museum. About the National Film Preservation Foundation The National Film Preservation Foundation is the nonprofit organization created by the U.S. Congress to help save America’s film heritage. The NFPF is the charitable affiliate of the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress. Since its creation in 1996, the NFPF has provided preservation support to 315 institutions and saved 2,547 films through grants and collaborative projects. The grants are made possible by funds authorized through The Library of Congress Sound Recording and Film Preservation Programs Reauthorization Act of 2016, secured through the leadership of the Library of Congress, and the contributions of public-spirited donors. The NFPF preservation grants target newsreels, silent-era films, culturally important home movies, avant-garde films, and endangered independent productions that fall under the radar of commercial preservation programs. Founded in 1947, the George Eastman Museum is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the largest film archives in the United States, located on the historic Rochester estate of entrepreneur and philanthropist George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography. Its holdings comprise more than 400,000 photographs, 28,000 motion picture films and three million archival objects related to cinema, the world’s preeminent collection of photographic and cinematographic technology, one of the leading libraries of books related to photography and cinema, and extensive holdings of documents and other objects related to George Eastman. As a research and teaching institution, the Eastman Museum has an active book publishing program, and its L. DID YOU KNOW? Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
