NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS

(NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends AnimalSociety.

Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfareeverpublished.

Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats inU.S.shelters.

It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs needtobesaved.

For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs needtobesavedandfindtoolstohelp individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfareeverpublished.

Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achievetheorganization’sgoalofbringing thewholecountryno-killby2025.

“Upuntiltwoyearsago, wedidn’teven know how many shelters existed,” she said.“Howcanyoupossiblysaveallthe animals if you don’t even know how manyneedtobesaved?

“With this data in hand, our goal to save every savable pet by 2025 is finallywithinreach,”Castlesaid.

PAW’S CORNER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 10-year-old shorthaired cat Vic has always had a sensitive stomach. About once a week, he would vomit right a er eating. However, in the past couple of weeks, he has vomited every other day, at least. I feed him a canned food for senior pets along with a handful of dry kibble each day. Changing the type of food doesn’t seem to help. Is it time to call the vet? --

DEAR CAROLYN: I think your instinct is right on. A sudden change in a pet’s daily patterns o en indicates that something is going on. Contact the veterinarian, who will schedule Vic for an exam within a couple of days. ey will look for possible signs of illness or injury.

It’s possible that nothing will turn up on the exam. at’s good, because it rules out more serious issues. But the vet will have you be more observant than usual and look for additional symptoms like lethargy, insistent meowing or continued frequent vomiting. ey’ll also have you monitor his water intake to make sure he’s not getting dehydrated.

ey will also probably recommend an entirely di erent brand of wet cat food, or even a prescription food on a temporary basis. is ensures that Vic continues getting the nutrition a senior cat needs.

ink about any changes to Vic’s environment that took place recently. Did you bring a new pet into the home, or a new person? Was a room redecorated? Did you travel for a few days? Anxiety can cause noticeable changes in a pet’s behavior. Also, were any potential toxins introduced, such as a pest control treatment or a new carpet installation? Write down any possibilities.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

My name is Murphy. I have the best roommate. She brushes me three times a day, makes me catnip toys, gives me treats and lets me out into the garage (my cat cave). I love her more than tuna fish!

Thank you to two Good Samaritans

A huge thank you to two separate men who each helped an elderly gentlemen climb down from the bleachers on the two nights of the Tractor Pull at the Hemlock Fair. Each of them noticed he was having trouble and offered to help him. Special Blessings to them both.

3rd of July Fireworks

Many thanks to Dave Pietrowski and family for providing Vitale Park and the north end of the lake with an outstanding fireworks display again this 3rd of July! He contributes a portion of the donations to the Warrior Salute Program.

Kia and Hyundai Thefts

With thefts of Kias and Hyundais on the rise, what can be done to stop this? Here’s my idea; If banks can place exploding dye packets in bags of money, why can’t a similar device be placed in vehicles? Safe for the owners but explode when attempts are made to steal a vehicle. Thus the criminals can be located. Simple idea.

Only Mean People Don’t Love Dogs!

In response to the senior citizens who “really doesn’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs” to music in the park. It is because they are beloved members of the family. Just as you might bring a grandchild, others love their dogs and want to share good times with them and enrich their furry family members’ lives by including them in activities. If the presence of anyone else, human or canine, bothers you, there’s always the option of staying home. Please don’t begrudge others enjoying themselves. Live and let live… and don’t whine. Nobody likes a whiner.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Heart Attacks Occur After Treatment of Infections

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mom had a throat and palate infection that was treated in 2017, and about two weeks later, she had a heart attack. In 2023, she had pneumonia, and was briefly hospitalized and treated, but again about two weeks later, she had another heart attack. We asked her cardiologist if there is a relationship between either the infections themselves or the treatment of infections and heart attacks, but he was not aware of any. This seems too unlikely to be a coincidence. What is your experience on this? -- A.C.S.

FOODS TO AVOID FOR DENTAL HEALTH

Some foods and drinks cause more plaque buildup than others. Sugary foods cause oral bacteria to release acids that wear down tooth enamel, causing tooth decay and cavities. Some foods are worse than others. Sour candies contain extra acids and stick to your teeth longer. Saliva breaks bread down into sugars than can be just as hard on your teeth as sweet treats and may also stick to your teeth longer than other foods. Alcoholic beverages dry out your mouth, reducing the saliva that helps repair tooth enamel and prevents bacteria from sticking to your teeth. Carbonated beverages also reduce saliva and contain high levels of acid. Citrus fruits, potato chips, and dried fruitareotherfoodstoavoid.

Our basic philosophy is that you and your family deserve the highest

quality dental services available today, and we are committed to providing just that here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. From sound advice on dietary habits to allencompassing, high-tech dental care from a rigorously trained compassionate staff, you’ll know you’reintherightplacethemoment you walk through our doors at 6 Batavia City Centre. Office hours are by appointment; please call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. Whole wheat bread contains less sugar, making it better than white bread for oral health.

www.bataviafamilydental.com

ANSWER: A heart attack happens when the demand for blood from the heart is greater than the ability of the blood vessels can provide. In practice, this almost always means that there are blockages in the blood vessels. However, an increase in the workload of the heart, such as strenuous exercise or an infection (fever tends to increase heart rate, and the blood flow from the heart usually increases with serious infection), can be what leads a person to have a heart attack. It’s possible that this is what happened with your mom. The timing of two weeks after the event is longer than expected, but it’s possible. Whether from chronic infection or inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation in the blood increases the risk of heart disease in the long term, so if there is a connection, and it’s not just coincidental, that would be the most likely cause. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about the dangers of testosterone replacement in men over 70 in your column a few months ago. Could you please describe the dangers of this again?

My husband is 73 and injects testosterone every 10 days or so. He’s not feeling too well overall, but he doesn’t know why. He’s been to the cardiologist, but the studies came back fine. He says he feels nerves in his stomach and a bit of shortness of breath. He’s also tired and without much energy. -- E.D. ANSWER: There are clear dangers with excess testosterone use, especially in older men. Some men use very high doses of testosterone or other androgens for muscle building, and this can cause heart damage, blood clots and stroke. I strongly do not recommend doing this, but it is generally used illicitly. By contrast, for men in whom testosterone therapy is given appropriately, the dangers are quite small, and in most men, the benefits outweigh the risks. Men should have a clear reason to receive testosterone therapy, such as having low bone density, low libido, loss of body hair, or development of breast tissue, in addition to repeatedly low testosterone levels (including a level taken between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. when testosterone levels are highest). In these men, the goal is to stabilize the testosterone level, and the risks of the catastrophic outcomes listed above appear to be very small, or even zero. Testosterone levels should also be measured during therapy. I can’t speculate on the cause behind your husband’s symptoms. Nonspecific symptoms, such as low energy, can be caused by low testosterone, but unless there are more specific symptoms of low testosterone, I generally do not recommend testosterone replacement.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER

Volunteer with a local park service. The National Park Service offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals who are enamored with the great outdoors and are interested in protecting their local and national parks. Such opportunities can be explored by visiting www.nps.gov/ getinvolved/volunteer.htm. Parks Canada (www.pc.gc.ca) offers similar opportunities to outdoor enthusiasts.

yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

National Play Outside Day

National Play Outside Day is the rst Saturday each month. e next one is Saturday, August 5th. What is National Play Outside Day? On the rst Saturday, everybody in the nation plays outside, packing away cellphones and electronic devices. Put social media on pause and go outside and play, leaving monotony, work, and stress behind you.

Mother Nature is waiting for you and is eager to open her treasure chest of beauty, adventure, and exploration. is is the perfect opportunity to branch out to nearby trails, attractions, and recreational fun. ere is no limit to the resources near you. Get ready to stimulate your imagination!

Movingfromasedentarytoanactivelifestyleprovidesmanyhealth bene ts. As we move from the modern world of overstimulation, noise, pollution, and indoor air (which has been proven to retain a higher concentration of viruses as compared with outdoor air), our mental clarity resets and our immune function boosts tremendously. Camping in an open space, away from urban distractions, is a great way to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. And…let’s not forget about sunlight, which helps your body produce Vitamin D and positively a ects your circadian rhythm, acting as a protective agent in reducing depression symptoms. With increased outdoor exercise, fresh oxygen pumps to our brains and limbs.

To clear the brain fog, I like to check out Fairport’s Lollypop Farm Trail, a less than mile loop trail with pretty wild owers, nearby Lollypop Farm, part of the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, where they provide compassionate care for all animals. Check out their exciting programs for animal lovers of all ages, such as Pet First Aid and CPR, a very helpful lesson in providing rst aid measures to pets until you can get to the vet. Or check out the Egypt Park Playground, frequently visited by parents with young children. Down the road in Macedon you can also access the RS&E Trolley Trail for a more energetic experience. e total length is 8.8 miles. Many bird watchers and hikers love this place, and it is very popular with cross country skiers. Additional resources include Victor Hiking Trails, Inc. and Crescent Trail Hiking.

When the temperature soars, head to Durand Eastman Beach on Lake Ontario for a dip. Located on Lakeshore Boulevard, there are also picnic areas and trails. If you’re ready to be immersed in woodlands, wetlands, and stream crossings, the scenic Erie Canal Trail is a must. Whether on bike or on foot, this picturesque pathway will not disappoint! Eateries along the canal o er tasty options and a chance to unwind.

Perhapsdiscoveranew-to-youpark.OneofMonroeCountyParks’ best kept secrets, Oatka Creek park in Wheatland is touted as one of the more “strollable” in the Monroe County Park system on its beautiful 3.3 mile loop trail, perfect for observing wild owers and birds and insects that surround you. Stop in to the park for a quiet nature retreat.

Check out Brockport’s incredible Alpine Adventure Zone Natural Playground on the eastern side of Northampton Park. Or perhaps bike, walk, or run through the “Lightning Tree” aka “ e Tree of Life” at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. From the Genesee Valley Park, you can also launch a kayak to explore the Erie Canal or Genesee River. Check out the 14-acre Centennial Park in Batavia, with its weekly summer concerts and famous sledding spots in winter.

We are truly blessed with natural refuges in the Rochester area. Whatever you decide to do this Play Outside Day, make outdoor time a priority, a good habit to nurture. Some people prefer the solitude of outdoor time to re ect on life and restore balance. Others look at outdoor time as a more social experience to encourage positive interactions. Whichever your preference, experience nature at its nest. Most important is to establish healthy habits to improve the quality of life.

The higher up in altitude a person goes, the stronger the sun’s rays become. Therefore, sun exposure in the mountains can be more dangerous than exposure at sea level.

DID YOU KNOW?

Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’sstratosphereabsorbssome of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Here’s a tip

My father taught me all I know about working the grill -- even though it was his job! One tip that’s served me best is this simple beauty: Let the meat sear before you move it. Give it a chance to cook on one side well enough that it li s away from the grill. If it’s sticking, you probably need to leave it alone! Happy grilling.

“Kitchen stores sell grill brushes, but they can be expensive. I use a good-quality paintbrush from the hardware store for grilling only, and replace it a couple of times throughout grilling season. I nd it to be a better brush, and less expensive to boot!” -- B.F. in Illinois

Your grilled meats will be more moist and taste better if you let them rest for a few minutes a er you take them o the grill. It allows the meat to redistribute the natural juices. If you are worried about temperature, just cover the meat with foil.

Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

If you find a honey bee swarm on your property, contact a local beekeeper who may be able to safely collect and relocate that swarm so it will produce honey and provide the additional benefits associated with healthy bees. People can also support beekeepers’ work by purchasing local honey. Not only does it keep jobs in the area, but some research also suggests that consuming local honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. WebMD says the practice is based on immunotherapy. Local honey contains traces of local pollen that may be responsible for seasonal allergies. Repeated exposure to small doses of this pollen might help bodies develop

After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season. Insured

* Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal.

* The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

I hear garlic is easy to grow around here. Do you have any tips for success?

Those who grow ‘their own’ know that homegrown produce tastes better than those bought at supermarket. This is also true for garlic! Garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow if a few critical requirements such as good soil, sufficient moisture, and correct planting and harvesting time are met.

This year’s spring was dry and irrigating the garlic helped greatly to keep it healthy while sizing up the bulbs. The leaf mold mulch we used kept the moisture in until the rains began in June. Coming July, it’s time to harvest your garlic crop!

There are two main types of garlic:

hardneck and softneck. Hardnecks form fewer but bigger cloves located around a hard central stem. The stem develops a curling top called a scape. Softneck garlic forms a higher number of cloves, the bigger ones are on the outside and smaller ones on the inside of the bulb.

Softnecks tend to mature a week earlier than hardnecks. If you are growing Softneck Garlic, you need to look and see that at least 50% of it has fallen over and is laying on the ground. Then you know that your softneck garlic is ready to harvest.

Hardneck is usually ready in mid–July. Pull a few plants every few days and cut

a cross section of the bulb. Once you see space forming between the cloves and the central stem, your garlic is ready for harvest.

Harvest by prying up the entire plant with a garden fork or shovel. Don’t shake or bang against the ground, instead, remove the soil by rubbing it off gently with your fingers. Let the bulbs dry off thoroughly in a single layer in the sun on the ground for a couple of days. Hang

or lay them down on shelves, window screens etc. with a good air flow to dry. Clean off when fully dry 2-3 weeks after harvest. This is also time to cut the roots. Keep your garlic in a low humidity, wellventilated location with a temperature of 60 to 65*F.

CCE’s Agriculture Program offers a garlic growing class.Stay tuned for updates coming out soon at https://monroe.cce.cornell.edu/ events.

LIGH HOUSE

While lighthouse technology has evolved over time, lighthouses were once widely used to mark dangerous reefs, shorelines or harbors. Today, we imagine how a lighthouse’s beacon of light offered hope to those seeking land in the midst of stormy seas and dark nights.

Wondering how to celebrate National Lighthouse Day?

Help preserve and protect a lighthouse by making a small donation to The American Lighthouse Foundation.

Paint or color a lighthouse and give your picture to that relative who has a collection of lighthouse postcards!

What are some examples of PA technology? Sensors are a prime example of PA technology that helps make farms more efficient and productive. Sensors serve various functions by helping farmers gather data on the availability of water in soil, the level of compaction in soil, leaf temperature, insect and disease infestation, and other areas. Weather modeling is another component of PA that can help farms be more costeffective and efficient. Whereas in years past many farms would need to manually assess certain variables to determine when to harvest, weather modeling technology has enabled some farmers to generate remote readings, saving time and money.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF

Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate.

The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:

1. Video relay service (VRS)

2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS)

3. Video remote interpreting (VRI) Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission,VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

Inquireaboutrelocationassistance.TheAlliedsurveyfoundthat63percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

Refresh Your Home for Spring

Get rid of grime

A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING

THE WORKDAY

Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exerciseintheirdailyroutinesyet stillsufferfromalackofalertness intheafternoonmayneedtoalter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

EMPLOYMENT ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111 Page38 BATAVIA EDITION ● FRIDAY,AUGUST 4,2023 QUESTIONS OR RESUME TO: Human Resources Administrator 409 East State Street Albion, NY 14411 hr@caoginc.org (585)589-5605

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ

Thejobmarketcanbecompetitive, as new graduates flood the field each and every year. But graduation season is not the only time of year when the competition to find work gets heated.

The start of the new year tends to be one of the busiest times of year for new hires. According to the employment resource Simply Hired, the first Monday after New Year’s Day tends to be the busiest day for job search activity. Companies are returning to full production after the holidays, and as a result there is a flurry of new activity.Thismeansapplicantscan use the last quarter of the year to prepare for job searches they will institute once the calendar turns. Many job seekers may benefit from revamping their résumés before beginning their search. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to receive thousands of résumés for each job opening they post, and the sheer volume of applicants canmakeitdifficultforjobseekers to get their résumés seen. In such instances, job seekers must take steps to tip the odds in their favor.
